As orebodies being mined globally are of ever-decreasing grades, the focus on the concentration process has moved increasingly to the challenges faced in management of the gangue minerals. This is especially so in the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs), where head grades are typically in the region of 4–7 g/t. Hence, in PGM operations, a typical recovery of about 80 percent requires depressing about 85 percent of the gangue minerals. In a flotation cell the main control parameters are reagent type and dosage, froth depth and air addition rate. This paper reviews research projects carried out over an extended period aimed at optimizing the depression of gangue minerals: both those that are naturally floatable and those, such as chromite, that are entrained.  This has involved comparing the two major depressants used in the industry — guar and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — in the depression of the relevant gangue minerals, as well as investigating their consequent effect on the behavior of the froth phase. Because most PGM flotation plants treat the ore as if all the PGMs are associated with sulfides, copper sulfate is widely used as an activator, but this can also lead to inadvertent activation of gangue minerals. Finally, chromite levels must be kept below 3–5 percent to avoid any negative effects on smelter performance, and thus it is important to reduce chromite recovery which mainly occurs due to entrainment through, for example, froth depth control.

The thermal draught within ventilation networks of underground mines depends to a great extent on the shafts depths and degree of change of ventilating air density. When the topology and space orientation of a ventilation network are constant, the dynamics of thermal draught is determined mainly by the variations of the heat- and mass-transfer processes in the openings. This conclusion follows from the well known basic theoretical notions about the thermal draught-aerostatics and thermodynamics [1]. Quantitative evaluation about the influence of heat- and mass-transfer processes on dynamics of thermal draught could be made through: direct mine measurements, special experiments and with the aid of mathematical models. The first two methods produce sufficiently accurative results, however it is very difficult to perform such studies, particularly when these processes are evaluated within a large scope and multifactor aspects. Mathematical models of thermal draught allow to overcome easily these difficulties. The degree of accuracy of results, obtained by this method, depends to a great extent on the degree of approximation achieved by the model to the real heat- and mass-transfer processes. In this paper, with the aid of Bulgarian developed method, algorithm and computer program V WT-4 - for complex evaluation of ventilation parameters in active mine ventilation networks [2], the authors investigate some changes in the thermal draught. Flowsheet flexibility in new 750 TPH coal cleaning plant provides three unusual capabilities. Two compartment drum coarse H.M. washer can be adapted to provide two stage separation. Coarse section of plant can be operated without fine section when washing surface mined coal. Fine section can operate with flotation cells bypassed if strip coal oxidation kills the froth. Plant can be fed by belt from bulk storage, front end loader from storage piles and truck from the mines. Raw coal and each of four washed products can be fed by belts to three separate loading points on two separate railroads.

A laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of oxygen and lead nitrate on the recovery of gold by cyanidation of a free milling gold ore, which contains 0.4 % copper as chalcopyrite. Efficient gold extraction is achieved only under specific conditions. The recovery of gold was increased from less than 90% to up to 98% by addition of lead nitrate. In the pre-leaching, the kinetics of oxidation of soluble sulphides are not an accurate indication for the length of the treatment. Even though the consumption of cyanide was reduced due to the inhibition of the dissolution of chalcopyrite by increasing additions of lead nitrate, cyanide consumption had to the held above 1.85 kg/t to maintain good recovery of gold. The continued addition of lead nitrate above 300 git had no impact on the recovery of gold. It was also found that the addition of lead nitrate at the start of cyanidation gave the same performance as when added during pre-leaching. The addition of oxygen increased the recovery of gold by 1.5%. The concentration ofNaCN had to be maintained in the range of700 mg/L because of the high concentration of copper in solution. The recovery of gold dropped significantly when the average NaCN concentration fell below 640 mg/L. Application of the findings of the laboratory study at the industrial scale led to improved plant performance.

The first successful heap leach of silver ores in the State of Arizona has been under continuous operation since early 1976 at the State of Maine Mine, two miles southwest of Tombstone, Arizona. The silver produced from leaching old mine dumps at this property vas the first in the Tombstone mining district to achieve a 999+ purity. While cyanide leaching of silver and gold ores is a time-proven accepted practice, a relatively new method of treatment called "heap" leaching was employed. Heap leaching is a comparatively inexpensive fast way to recover precious metals from low grade material.

Coal cleaning with traditional magnetic separation usually yields unsatisfactory results because minerals associated with coal, such as quartz, clay, pyrite and calcite, are weak-or non-magnetic. Magnetic reagent technology is a new mineral processing technology with the capability to enhance the magnetic property of minerals selectively. This reagent can be adsorbed selectively on minerals through the control of surface chemistry and, thus, result in selective magnetic enhancement. The application of this technology on coal cleaning has been experimentally demonstrated. Good separation results can be obtained at low to medium magnetic field strength. Comparison with other processing technologies is included.

Resource Technology Associates (RTA) has developed a flocculation-flotation process that increases phosphate recoveries from current operating plants. A major advantage of the process is the ability to float the phosphate from the matrix without a preliminary separation to remove the slimes. A majority of the material that is now discarded in the slime fraction will be recovered in the new process. The process can also be used to recover phosphate material from current slime ponds either as a separate feed or mixed with matrix material. Flotation tails from the process demonstrate improved dewatering characteristics then those seen from conventional float tails.

In June, 1981 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the U.S. coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent". Until recently, clean coal has had a low selling price and satisfying the purchasers' specifications required only minimum cleaning. However, it is becoming more apparent that the increases in coalfired utility power plants forced outage rates are relative to the deterioration in the quality of fired coal. Utility companies are becoming aware of the economic value of reducing the variability of ash, moisture and sulfur in steam coal purchase orders. New contracts are currently being negotiated between electric utilities and coal producers that include provisions for increased penalties if the product does not meet specifications. With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. This paper discusses the various types and applications of nuclear instrumentation currently in use in the coal preparation industry.

The production of fine particle products within the mineral processing industry is a very important market segment. Many of these products are processed in an aqueous state and must ultimately be dewatered. This entails processes which are very energy and capital intensive. The introduction of membrane based dewatering systems has offered great promise in the area of energy saving and operating costs. Unfortunately, membrane separators have not yet had the ability to handle high solids. New Logic introduces a system which can concentrate a low solids stream to a high solids sludge in a one pass, very energy efficient system.

Abundant beach and offshore resources of gold deposits are demonstrated along the coast of Alaska, and Nome is one of the richest places. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were collected and stored in geodatabase of ArcGIS. In searching for the best model for the interpretation of the Nome offshore gold placer deposit and accurate estimation of the reserve, the data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS. The gold concentration data collected from the Nome offshore deposit are of characteristics such that: (1) near lognormal distribution of data, (2) high positive skewed distribution, (3) a small number of extreme values dominating the reserve estimation, and (4) apparent anisotropy of the variogram. These characteristics make the development of an interpolation model for the gold deposit a challenging task. In this study, it is determined that five geostatistical methods provided by ArcGIS with visualization capability, i.e., Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Ordinary Kriging with lognormal transformation (OK-log), Simple Kriging (SK) and Indicator Kriging (IK) are suitable candidates for the development of an interpolation model. The five algorithms are evaluated and compared with each other in the study. Cross-validation technique is employed to examine the accuracy of the five approaches. It is determined that the OK and SK algorithms are not suitable for this dataset because of the difficulty of fitting the semivariogram model despite their lower RMSE (Root-mean-square error) and the higher RMSS (Root-mean-square Standardized). The OK-log algorithm does not provide satisfactory prediction either, because it places too much weight on the role of extreme values resulting in overestimation and extremely high RMSE. Reserve estimation of each blocks is conducted using each of the interpolation methods and compared with the reserve calculated using the conventional polygon method. The IWD and IK algorithm seem to provide estimations more agreeable with the conventional polygon method.

INTRODUCTION Solid-liquid separation is an important and many times a critical step (or steps) in a mineral or coal processing plant. Some examples of typical critical separations are as follows: 1. Operating a seven to eight stage CCD thickening circuit to re¬cover almost all of the caustic and alumina trihydrate values in an alumina plant. This must be accomplished with highly scaling slurries, starting temperatures of over 100°C and operate on a closed circuit system. 2. Making a filter step operate to produce a proper moisture for the balling step so that the pellet furnace can produce a proper product. Bentonite addition must be minimized and a good quality filtrate must be maintained to prevent abrasion of the internal parts of the filter. 3. Operating a closed water system in a coal washing plant so that reclaimed water containing less than one percent suspended solids is produced for reuse to maintain beneficiation ef¬ficiency. Refuse solids must also be thickened so that they can be effectively dewatered to meet state disposal requirements. 4. Recovering phosphoric acid values from a slurry containing gypsum and other gangue solids at an elevated temperature. This must be done while minimizing wash water and maximizing P2O5 re¬covery while simultaneously minimizing scale problems. While solid-liquid separations are important to overall performance in the processing plant flowsheet, it is also a significant factor in plant costs. Capital and operating costs for all the solid-liquid separation steps (includ¬ing water reclamation for reuse) in such plants are probably between 10 and 20%. Energy consumption can also be important in these separations. For example, in the copper concentrator, it is the third largest category in energy consumption, after comminution and flotation. Obviously, solid-liquid separation steps in a plant demand proper atten¬tion in design in order to achieve both optimum performance and cost. Simultaneously, knowledge of funda¬mentals are important to improve results in existing plants.

The Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) Project is a 1.9-mile-long metro light-rail extension project that traverses the historical core of downtown Los Angeles, California. This project aims to improve mobility throughout downtown LA with fewer transfers for riders. It is designed to connect two existing rail lines for a more seamless travel. The project consists of twin bore tunnels, three new stations, and is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The design-build contract was awarded to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC) in 2014, a joint venture of Skanska and Traylor Bros, Inc. with Hatch Mott MacDonald as the designer. One of the challenging aspects of the project was the construction of a crossover cavern in a narrow public right-of-way surrounded by historical structures. RCC used Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) to construct the crossover cavern measuring 287 ft long by 58 ft wide by 36 ft tall. The initial lining of the cavern featured a 12 in. fiber reinforced shotcrete lining. The initial lining was separated from the final lining by a hydrocarbon resistant membrane, as specified by the standard requirements of Metro. The cavern features a cast-in-place final lining with a thickness of 5 ft 9 inches in the invert and 18 inches in the crown and walls. The structure also features a nonload bearing plenum slab and interior walls for ventilation.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The globalization of mineral markets and intense competition in downstream mineral-consuming industries such as transportation, agriculture, and construction are requiring raw materials suppliers to innovate, improve quality, invest in new technology, and control costs. Mineral specifications are becoming more refined, and pressure to improve products is felt from increasing numbers of competing producers, substitute materials, customers, and regulators. As a result, engineered mineral products are becoming more like manufactured ones in terms of cost structure, differentiation, and the importance of market driven, customer specific product development. Engineered mineral products are defined as those where the costs of refining and upgrading outweigh those of conventional mining activities (blasting, crushing, classification, haulage etc.), and where close control of physical and chemical parameters is required for customers' processing and manufacturing applications. This includes industrial minerals such as calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, specialty oxides, talc, and some metal powders. It excludes most metals and bulk commodity materials such as gypsum, lime, sulfur, and soda ash. Engineered mineral products are utilized in common household goods, and are at the forefront of industrial materials engineering in plastics, ceramics, composites, glazes, coatings, and construction materials. As a group, they introduce interesting questions to the minerals firm. Advanced materials or basic? Diversify or specialize? What are the implications of advanced materials and for mineral markets, and most importantly, where can the producer look for long-term value, volume, and profits?

A new electrotelluric prospecting technique allows the mapping of ore body distribution, lithologic contacts, and voids with accurracy comparable to core drilling. Data is available almost immediately and presented in a format similar to a downhole log. This is done with a passive surface receiver that transduces electrotelluric radiation into an audible signal. Changes in the character of the audible signal lends insight into lithology, porosity, fluid type and medium. Three case histories are presented. The first delineated a paleochannel within a coal seam. The second traced old mine workings and backfill areas. The third identified a high-pressure karst void.

A description is given of the investigation conducted at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Operation in Manitoba during 1986. Gas and dust concentrations were measured in the exhaust air of the major working sections to assess the potential for recirculating exhaust air into the intake air in winter to reduce heating costs. The results indicate that there is excellent potential to significantly reduce winter heating costs by controlled recirculation of exhaust air. Gas and dust concentrations vary significantly during the working shifts but have consistent trends from shift to shift and day to day. The variations in gas concentrations have similar trends but no single gas could be reliably used to predict the variation of the other gas or the dust concentrations. Dilution and the other effects which reduce pollutant levels as the exhaust air returns to surface indicate that recirculation should take place as close to surface as possible, subject to the economic constraints of the airway construction required and the extra fan energy required for the longer recirculation path. Recommendations are made for the choice and positioning of air and dust monitoring sensors and the logic of a control system. Economic analysis of the results indicates that controlled recirculation is viable at an existing mine with a pay back period of approximately two years. Incorporation of a system into a new mine at the planning stage would significantly shorten the pay back period.

Empirical methods for describing the shape of the subsidence trough over coal mines in Europe are tested against field measurements of subsidence over longwall panels in the United States. The graphical methods developed by the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom do not correlate well with the U.S. measurements; however, the profile functions typically used on the Continent give quite acceptable fits to the data. In the case of two longwall panels mined at Old Ben No. 24 in Illinois, a trigonometric profile function appears the best choice; in the case of two longwall panels mined at York Canyon in New Mexico, an error integral function is somewhat superior. Analyses of subsidence development curves show that rate effects occur. A comparison of fitting parameters establish influence functions as an important methodology for future analysis. In conjunction with the evaluation of empirical methods, an analytic model based on material failure and bulking was developed. A key element of the model is the void-volume distribution function which establishes a mechanism for transfer of significant amounts of the mined volume to the surface. Preliminary calculations demonstrate the features of the model and illustrate close correlation to physical observations in the field. Moreover, centrifuge models simulating the subsidence process have been used successfully to demonstrate the dominant or key failure modes necessary to the analytic model. General features of the centrifuge simulations and model calculations correlate well.
