"The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mining-substances; to promote health and safety, in the mineral industries; to conserve Material resources , and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other Mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1975, to December 31, 1979. This report presents information developed during Bureau of Mines contract H0242016, "Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection Systems" from May, 1974 through June, 1975. Purpose of the metal and nonmetal health and safety project was to evaluate mine shaft fire and smoke hazard problems, and to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, reliable mine shaft fire protection system that would protect against such hazards and would be applicable to a majority of metal and nonmetal mine shafts, including raises and winzes, especially in deep mines. Program effort proceeded through five phases, culminating in the successful in-mine fire demonstration of a prototype system. In addition to this final report, a film is available which depicts components of the system and its successful shaft fire testing at an underground mine.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) A MERE record of Emmons's professional career would very inadequately represent the man. That he was eminent we know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly wholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable: Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son- of Nathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Franklin after an ancestor who was of the same family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the École Impériale des Mines at Paris, lie e Beaumont and Daubrée being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because. they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States Government. Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent no improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silver-bearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores char because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are being made primarily to provide preliminary information to the Department of Interior agencies and to others concerned with planning the proposed Federal power developments within the Missouri River Basin. This report has been designed to permit public distribution of the factual data obtained . Virtually all known metallic -mineral occurrences and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within Fergus County were investigated in 1948. The investigations cannot be considered complete , however , because some long inactive mines or prospects may have been missed . Most of the old mine and prospect openings now are caved ; many are completely inaccessible . Many of the claims located years ago have been abandoned ; others have been relocated under different names and ownerships . Because of such conditions , much of the information regarding their development and operation necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications , supplemented by information provided by owners and local residents .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the implications of in-mine ground control on the automated or remotely controlled operation of longwall mining equipment, Perhaps the greatest challenge to longwall automation researchers is the development of systems that will continuously function in the complex and unpredictable underground environment. The high degree of environmental variability, together with conditions brought about by the extraction process, makes complete automation of longwall mining a difficult task. The intellectual thought processes and split-second decision making required to avert disasters are lost when workers are removed from the face. As many mine operators can attest, minor problems, left unresolved, can eventually accumulate and lead to catastrophic consequences. The automation process will have to assess and manage various routine problems that are otherwise resolved through worker observation and experience.

The assessment of liquefaction vulnerability is crucial to understanding the potential consequences of a tailings dam failure. The “Plewes method” is a relatively well-known and simple screening method to assess liquefaction potential based on results of cone penetration testing (CPT) which may be complemented with laboratory testing. The objective of the current work is to emphasise the screening nature of the method and its uncertainties when applied in tailings deposits. Specifically, the paper highlights the difficulties in assessing the intrinsic uncertainty of the method and the additional uncertainty that results from variations of the slope of the critical state line (λ10) along the depth of the CPT sounding. The results of the method are too uncertain for detailed characterisation of tailings even when a relatively low intrinsic uncertainty is assumed. However, the method characterises weaker soils with lower uncertainty (although still too high for detailed characterisation) than stronger soils. The uncertainty of the method is negatively affected by the relatively low λ10 values that are typical of nonplastic tailings. It is suggested that the results of the method should be presented in scatter plots in which the spread of the data is consistent with the uncertainty of the method.

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its prin- cipal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctua- tions, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic informa- tion and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that produc- tion rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a discussion of the statistical approach to the design of experiments and indicates, by concrete examples, how and when statistical design is essential for obtaining meaningful data with a minimum number of experiments. Every research worker plans his work and designs his experiments in a manner which, based on his experience, seems most rational to him and which he believes will produce the information essential for resolving the problems. If the results obtained are open to multiple interpretations and are not of definitive reliability, the failure of the experiment design to produce the desired information may be due to several causes, These include faulty judgment in selecting the factors to be tested, ignoring the importance of interaction between factors, failure to adequately control test variables, and assuming that meaningful trends in the results can be identified without comparison to a predetermined experimental error. An experienced researcher probably will deduce from the nature of the data obtained that the design is faulty and may by trial and error ultimately arrive at the correct solution to the problem. Statistical methods of planning research minimize the chance of faulty experiment design, embody concrete procedures for testing the validity and reliability of the test data and for indicating mandatory changes in the design, and enable the researcher to obtain meaningful information with the least number of tests.

Interstitial compounds of iron, cobalt, and nickel, and their binary and ternary mixtures with silver, gold, palladium, and platinum were prepared and tested as fuel cell catalysts. The first step in the preparation of the interstitial compounds consisted of preparing finely divided metals. This was done either by the Raney method or by reduction of precipitated hydroxides of the metals. The finely divided reduced metals were then treated with carbon-and/or nitrogen-containing gases to prepare their carbides, nitrides, and nitrocarbides. The materials were tested for cathodic activity towards O2 and for anodic activity towards H2, C3H8, NH3, CO, and N2H4 in acid and alkaline electrolytes at 25° to 90° C in half-cell assemblies. Samples of carbided and nitrocarbided INi-lAg-1Au were about one fifth as active as Pt-black in the reduction of O2 in 35 percent KOH solution, whereas the activities of several interstitial preparations exceeded the activity of Pt-black in the reduction of O2 in 12M KOH containing N2H4. Nitrocarbides of x-Fe2C, 3Ni-1Au, and 1Ni-3Au were effective catalysts for oxidizing N2H4 in liquid NH3 containing NH4SCN. Corrosion of the catalysts by electrolytes was severe in many cases.

WTHIN the next month all members of the Institute will be given an opportunity to vote for a new President, two Vice-Presidents, and five Directors. All of the candidates nominated by the official committee are well known to certain groups of the Institute membership but a brief record of their professional lives will be given here for the information of those that will vote. Not since 1927, when Everette DeGolyer guided the destinies of the Institute, has a member of the Petroleum Division been a candidate for President. John Meston Lovejoy has been a Director since 1930, and a Vice-President as well for the last year: In the three years 1932-4 lie was also chairman of the Admissions Committee. Dir. Lovejoy graduated from the Columbia School of Mines in 1911, just before lie was 22 years old, and began his professional career as a copper miner at Chuquicamata. Chile. Silver and gold mining later claimed his % attention, and it was not until 1914 that lie gut into the oil business, as geologist for the Standard Oil Co. of N. Y. This took hint to China and he later worked for the company in Wyoming. In 1917 lie joined the Army where lie rose to be captain of Field Artillery. Upon his return to the United States he went to work for the Amerada Petroleum Co., of which he later became vice-president and general manager, with headquarters in Tulsa. Since coining to New York he has been president of the Petroleum Bond & Share Cu.. and is currently president of the Seaboard Oil Co.

I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the last twenty years or so the chemical investigation of rocks has made great advances, and it is now generally recognized that a knowledge of the chemical composition is as essential as that of the texture or mineral composition-if not more so-for the proper classification of rocks and study of their origin and relationships. Rock-analyses have vastly increased in numbers and, what is of greater importance, in quality. New and improved methods permit of greater accuracy than was possible in the early days, and the list of chemical constituents frequently determined has risen from the seven or eight of the greater part of the nineteenth century to twenty or more. Indeed, rock-analyses with determinations of so many constituents are now commonly made by the chemists of the United States and Australia, while in Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy the rarer constituents are determined more frequently than formerly. As a consequence of this modern, accurate work, it has been discovered that some elements which were formerly supposed to be rare are of wide-spread occurrence and are often present in considerable amount. The fact is further being developed that the elements tend to show certain relations of occurrence or abundance in connection with each other. This is a fact which is applicable to the rarer elements, and which also finds a broad geological and petrological expression in the recognition of petrographic provinces. We are beginning to obtain some definite, though as yet rudimentary, knowledge of the distribution of the elements among igneous rocks. Some of the results along these lines obtained by study of the vast accumulation of analytical data now available are well known to petrologists, while others do not seem to be so gener-

I N the introductory chapter to "Man and Metals," T. A. Rickard wrote "Five hundred thousand years ago the first footfalls of man's oncoming echoed down the corridors of time." This phrase has always appealed to me, not only for its resonance but because it seems to place in some perspective man's place in the cosmos. As we go about our daily occupations and as we meet here tonight, we must agree that we have come a long way slowly at first through the ages of change but with a quickening pace that has brought to man's know-ledge and use, within the last hundred years, more ideas, more material advantages, more opportunities and more comforts than were ever imagined or dreamed of in those long corridors of time. Looking back to the dawn of his-tory, a mere five thousand years ago, there is one aspect of the birth and growth of civilization that has particular significance for the miner and the metallurgist.

On April 5, the potlines at Consolidated Aluminum Corp.'s 35,000 ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter at Lake Charles, La., were frozen when natural gas lines were accidently cut by a dredge. Full production is expected to resume in 3 to 4 months. Three primary aluminum producers announced plans to restore much of the idled capacity in the Pacific Northwest as a result of a special power allocation by the Bonneville Power Administration. Reynolds Metals Co. planned to bring a total of 40,800 tons per year of capacity back onstream at Troutdale, Oreg., and Longview, Wash. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) will restart half of a 23,500 ton-per-year potline at Vancouver, Wash. Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. planned to restart a 27,500 ton-per-year potline at Mead, Wash., and to bring an additional 10,000 to 20,000 tons per year back onstream at Mead and Tacoma, Wash.

This report describes the performance of Phase I of a project to design, analyze, and demonstrate a multilift longwall mining method applicable to mining coal seams twelve (12) feet or more in thickness. A non-simultaneous multilift operation is the most viable thick seam mining technique for introduction to the United States coal industry. In the case of the proposed site at Emery, Utah it will result in an increase in coal extraction from 30% with present methods to at least 50% and possibly more. The major technological advance involved in this project is mining a lower lift under a previously mined upper lift. To accomplish this, entries must be developed and maintained beneath the upper lift gob. This will necessitate the use of steel supports at frequent intervals throughout the lower lift' entry system. This has not been done in the U.S. to date. An economic analysis of the project indicates that, while this method will result in a higher than average cost per ton for coal mined, the coal would be competitive with current-operation in the area.

"In July 1943, the Bureau of Nines received an appropriation to investigate the beneficiation of Minnesota iron ores through the use of lignite. The broad objective was to find a way to link the large deposits of lignite in North Dakota with the low-grade iron ores of Minnesota. It was proposed that sponge iron might be made through new methods of processing, and one of the objectives was to determine the possibilities of gaseous reduction of fine ore. The problem of obtaining high-hydrogen reducing gases from lignite was assigned to the Subbituminous Coal and Lignite Section of the Bureau of Mines in August 1943.Through the advice of technical consultants and men familiar with the mineral resources of Minnesota and North Dakota, a tentative program of development was outlined. The first proposal was to study the gasification of lignite briquets in a standard water-gas machine. Previous experience with gasification of lignite indicated that the raw fuel would not be suitable for use in the conventional water-gas process on account of degradation, but gasification of lignite briquets appeared possible. Through the cooperation of the Northern State Power Co„ a series of tests was made at the company's plant in Grand Forks, N. Dak., on lignite-char briquets made by the Lehigh Briquetting Co. at Dickinson, Dak. These briquets are made by the Lurgi process, and they have been used satisfactorily as a domestic fuel. The object of the tests was to compare gasification properties of lignite-char briquets with those of gas. coke made from Kentucky coal, normally used in the Grand Forks plant. The tests revealed that the lignite-char briquets were not suitable for gasification, in the standard water-gas process because of disinte-gration and low efficiency caused by loss of fine carbon.While these investigations were underway, a joint Minnesota-North Dakota Development Commission was formed to aid in planning investigations on development of mineral resources of the two States. Some members of this commission were technical men, who with consulting engineers on the Bureau's staff made up an unofficial technical committee, and assisted in solving certain problems connected with gasification of lignite and beneficiation of iron ores. This committee has been of 'real assistance in guiding the investigation.A technical meeting was held in Minneapolis on November 10 and 11, 1943, for further discussion of objectives and certain technical problems. Results of tests on lignite briquets were presented, and several reports analyzing other methods of gasification were discussed. The Reyerson-Gernes process for the continuous gasification of lignite in an externally heated retort was considered from several angles. This process differs from others in that the natural moisture in the coal is utilized to help gasify the coal, and the volatile matter is largely decomposed. Although this process had been carried out successfully in a small steel retort, no definite design for a commercial-scale retort had .been developed. It was first proposed that the process might be carried out in a Glover-West retort. However, it was brought out that a Glover-West retort would require modification to simulate the process correctly, and that good results might not be obtained even then owing to the leakage of gas through the refractory walls and to an anticipated low rate of heat transfer at the gasification temperature suitable for lignite. Further, the probable leakage of inert furnace gas into the water-gas would be adverse to the Objective to obtain a gas that could be purified to 96 percent hydrogen."
