INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. Foram estudadas as microestruturas de quatro juntas soldadas de aço inoxidável austenítico produzidas através do processo MIG/MAG com diferentes gases de proteção, dentro de um projeto que visava estudar o comportamento de juntas soldadas de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos a altas temperaturas. Utilizou-se o metal de adição 22.12.HT e diferentes gases de proteção: 100% Ar, Ar + 2% CO2, Ar +4% CO2 e Ar + 20% CO2. Para cada mistura gasosa, foi soldado um corpo de prova. Estudouse a variação das frações volumétricas de ferrita delta em função dos diferentes gases de proteção utilizados. Observou-se aumento no teor de carbono e consequente diminuição das frações volumétricas de ferrita delta nos metais depositados com gases de proteção com maiores concentrações de CO2, evidenciando-se que o carbono é um forte estabilizador da austenita nos aços inoxidáveis austeníticos.

The site is the Iron Mountain Quarry, Granite Falls, WA., an aggregate quarry with an annual production of in excess of 1,000,000 tons. The problem is to pioneer a forty acre addition of on top of Iron Mountain. The entire area had a vertical relief of fifty to one hundred feet with no level surfaces. The 1969 Lignite Symposium was held at Grand Forks, N. Dak., on May 1-2, 1969. Cosponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, the meeting was the fifth in this series. Registrants from many States and Canadian Provinces attended the meeting representing many segments of energy-oriented companies, State and Federal Government, and universities. At 2-year intervals, these symposia provide a common meeting place where recent research and developments in technology and utilization of energy resources with emphasis on solid fuels (lignite) are presented. Proceedings3 of the previous symposia including a Forum held in 1958 have been published.4

The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine was acquired by Newmont in August 2015. The high grade flotation mill project was commissioned in February 2014. The mill to date has been throughput limited due to mechanical and design issues. In order to create the most value from a throughput limited plant a campaign to provide timely ore characterization was undertaken. A diagnostic leach methodology was developed to determine gold associations by ore type. The resulting associations were then used to characterize feed blend; gold losses and optimize gold production. The diagnostic methodology is presented along with discussion on flotation implications.

McArthur River Operation is the world?s largest high grade uranium deposit and is located in Northern Saskatchewan. McArthur River came into production in December 1999 with a number of innovative technologies to allow for mining of a high grade uranium deposit in challenging geotechnical and hydrological conditions. The raisebore mining method has been supplemented by the continued development of a boxhole mining technique to allow for mining of mineralization that cannot be accessed with a drill chamber from above. An innovative freeze wall re-design ? a cathedral freeze wall, was implemented in 2009 to allow for top access of a new orebody in the unconformity area of the Athabasca Sandstone. This paper highlights some of the ongoing improvements to the mining method and the innovative risk mitigation applied to manage the extraction of this challenging orebody.

Research on the low-potential hydrophobic state of pyrite with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector, is reported to help explain and understand the fundamental aspects of the N2TEC flotation process, which was originally developed for the improved recovery of gold from refractory auriferous sulfide ores. Typically in the N2TEC process, air is replaced by nitrogen as the flotation gas, and potassium amyl xanthate is used as collector for the reactive auriferous pyrite particles. The first N2TEC flotation process was commissioned at Lone Tree in Nevada in March 1997 and has been in operation ever since. On the basis of electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements, the low-potential, low-pH hydrophobic state of pyrite has been examined as a function of flotation variables such as pH, gas-phase composition, collector concentration and pyrite potential.

All general measures of the safety record of the coal mining industry worsened appreciably in 1970. Injury experience for the year was 260 fatal and 11,552 nonfatal injuries at respective frequency rates of 1.00 and 44.40 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality total was 57 higher and the rate of occurrence was 18 percent higher than the corresponding figures of 203 fatal injuries with a frequency rate of 0.85 in 1969. The worsened fatality record in 1970 resulted primarily from a major disaster (a single accident which results in the death of five men or more) on December 30, 1970, that killed 38 men. There were no major disasters in 1969. The total of 11,552 nonfatal injuries in 1970 was the highest annual total since 1960. It was 1,635 higher and the frequency rate was 6 percent higher than the corresponding totals for 1969 of 9,917 nonfatal injuries occurring at a rate of 41.76. The injury severity rate of 8,308 days lost or charged per million man-hours was 13 percent worse than that of 7,359 in 1969. Similarly, the average severity of 183 days lost or charged per injury in 1970 was 10 days or 6 percent higher than in 1969. Aggregate worktime of 260.2 million man-hours and production of 609.8 million tons in 1970 were, respectively, 10 and 7 percent higher than in 1969. An average of 144,480 men were at work on an average of 227 active days in 6,316 mines and 544 mechanical cleaning plants during 1970.

Extensive thick lignite apparently lies within 250 feet of the land surface in Dyer, Lake, Lauderdale, Obion and Tipton counties. Information on geology, land use, soils, groundwater and instability is compiled, along with a bibliography. A test and monitoring site was investigated at Fort Pillow Prison in Lauderdale County. Analyses were made of lignite, overburden, associated water and leachate. Lignite has high BTU (about 7800) and low sulfur (1.1% avg.). A year or more of data are presented on rainfall, water levels, and chemistry of surface water, groundwater, leachate and water from test pits. Main potential environmental problems are quality of surface water, and possibly shallow groundwater. The main aquifer of the region will likely be un-affected by mining. Low transmissibility of shallow aquifers will minimize lowering water levels of wells. Soil reclamation and conservation should be readily accomplished, Dangerous earthquakes have a low probability and mines are not significantly more hazardous than steep bluffs.

"It is advantageous to process low grade ores with large scale flotation cells. Large-scale flotation cells have been enhanced with effective volume scale-up. In this paper, the latest and largest flotation cell with effective volume of 680 m3 in China is investigated. The hydrodynamics and flotation kinetics characteristics are conducted using CFD simulation. The similar circulating flow is formed compared to the previous BGRIMM (Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy) flotation cell and it is a suitable fluid dynamics environment. It is demonstrated that the flotation cell produces good gas dispersion and solid suspension. It is indicated that kinetic eddy dissipation plays a key role on collision kernel and collision probability profile. The higher collision probability profile appears at the impeller and stator regions aiding good metallurgical performances. The properties of the large-scale flotation cell are assessed using hydrodynamic numbers. The variation of hydrodynamic numbers such as the power number Np, the Froude number Fr, the air flow number Na, etc with flotation cell volumes show similar properties to previous flotation cells proven to be good in engineering applications. This research would aid structure optimization of the 680 m3 flotation cell.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the mains method used in the mineral industry, which is used to process the most of metallic minerals. The proportion of low grade ores has increased with the minerals exploited around world. The increased capacity of concentrators demands large-scale flotation cells. Therefore, flotation equipment has seen a significant increase in size, for which large-scale flotation cells have prominent advantages in improving metallurgical performances, reducing area of plant blueprint printer, lowering the power consumption of the unit ore, decreasing labor cost and overall capital cost. Since the end of 1940’s, flotation cell sizes have continuously increased. To the end of 1990’s, flotation cells with the effective volume of 200 m3 were developed. In the last two decades, flotation cells have achieved a dramatic increase in size. In 2003, an industrial experiment on 257 m3 Smart Cell flotation cells was carried out in Minera Los-Pelambres, Chile. In 2007, the first 300 m3 Tank Cell flotation cell was designed and obtained industrial application in Macraes gold ore, New Zealand. And 320 m3 BGRIMM flotation cells are also in good operation in Toromocho Copper Mine, Peru and Wunugetushan Copper Mine, China. However, flotation cells are conventionally designed using empirically derived relations and geometric similarity. The continual scale-up of flotation cells is still a significant developing process. A 500 m3 Tank Cell was designed for the industrial experiment in Finland and a 620 m3 Tank Cell have also been completed the design. A 660 m3 Super Cell also was manufactured for the industrial experiment released in IMPC 2014. So, the flotation cells with volume exceeding 600 m3 become a pioneering research field for researchers worldwide."

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. "The Johnny Bull and Silver Knight claims were selected for exploratory diamond drilling after having been examined by the Bureau of Mines 3./The property was considered attractive for two reasons: (1) A prominent outcrop, recognized as an extension of the Tennessee vein, persisted over a distance of 2,000 feet across the claims; (2) its proximity to the known ore shoots in the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine, one of the largest zinc-load producers in Arizona.Actual drilling was started September 18 and was terminated December 8, 1943. Eight holes, aggregating 2,979.5 feet, were drilled with two machines. The authors were responsible for a series of large scale multiple chamber charge blasts conducted in the granite mountain area for making construction space on the southeast sea coast in China during 1993-1996. This paper describes the blast design and damage control of one mountain blast 320m in length and 280m in width in the vicinity of two wharfs and a dam. In order to obtain better rock fragmentation and muckpile, the explosive charge should be well-distributed in the mountain. The charge pattern, therefore, was designed with mainly 5 rows of tunnel charge in regular terrain in combination with a chamber charge in irregular topography area and the maximum burden was limited to be less than 38m. In order to protect the dam and wharfs the firing sequence was carefully arranged in 29 intervals and the distance between different charges of the same delay to the dam or wharf was taken into account as an additional delay interval based on the difference of p-wave propagating times. The maximum charge fired in an interval was also limited to less than 34t explosives through dividing the larger charge by a stemming deck.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 ~ 25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the `Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 165o cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of `orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). ?esting was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures. L’ anisotropie characterise les roches foliées (schistes, gneiss, phyllades). Dans ce travail des essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés afin de déterminer le comportement anisotropique des roches gneissiques. L’ effet de l’anisotropie a été examiné par rapport aux propriétés méchaniques (résistance, deformation) et propriétés dynamiques (vélocité ultrasonique). En outre des essais des roches ont été exécutés a des compressions latérales successivement plus grandes afin de déterminer le comportement des roches sous grands charges. Anisotropie ist eine Eigenschaft der geschieferten Gesteine (TonSchiefer, Gneis, Phyllit, Marmor). Versuche wurden durchgeführt, um anisotrope Verhalten von gneis Gesteinen zu ermitteln. Der Einfluss von Anisotropie auf mechanische (Festigkeit, Dehnung) und dynamische Eigenschaften (Wellegeschwindigkeit) wurde bestimmt. Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Mining layout See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a detailed description. Drill rig The drill rig was a combination of a Secoma P-Low LC 10long hole feed and an Axera low profile carrier. The choice of this equipment was made through consultation with Tamrock Sandvik. All relevant design perimeters of the area to be mined were taken into consideration. Production targets
