"Chador-Malu iron ore is one of the most important iron mines of Iran.About 98 percent of Fe in the ore is in shape of Magnetite, Hematite, Martite, aqua oxide of Iron and the other irons are with ferrous silicates, actinolite, cholorite and ferrous dolomites. 1% of Fe has replaced in pyrite. The phosphor distribution in the ore is non-hemogenous and its average in the whole of the deposit is 94%. It is in shape of Apatite.This mine contains considerable phosphor, which makes it useless for metallurgical uses. At this mine the phosphor is reduced in the iron ore at two steps. At the first step, magnetic part of the ore is separated from the gangues and phosphors by magnetic separator. At the second step, the ore is enriched by the flotation methods. Experimental flotation methods to obtain the optimum conditions are as follows:• Effect of Starch as Hematite depressant with ATRAC as Apatite collector• Effect of Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant with ATRAC as Apatite collector• Effect of ASAM as Apatite collector with Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant• Effect of ATRAC (BEROL) as Apatite collector with Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant• Effect of ASAM & ATRAC mixture as Apatite collector with Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant• Effect of Kcarbonate as pH-modifier• Final test to Optimize pH, Collector, DepressantAt this research we have found the optimum circumstance of the flotation of Chador-Malu iron ore in order to decreasing phosphors of iron oxide and floating of Apatite to make pure Hematite.To reach the optimum conditions, some tests were done with different amounts of pH, collector and depressant. "Changes have recently been applied to the Sullivan Concentrator lead and zinc circuits to treat fine-grained ores which make-up the majority of ore reserves in the mine. Pilot plant test work conducted in 1990-91 indicated that concentrate grades would be substantially improved by reducing the particle size (P,0) of the lead from 38 to 15 µm and the zinc from 45 to 24 µm.Circuit revisions involved installation of major new equipment including: two GUO kilowatt Vertimills for regrinding, a 4 metre diameter column flotation cell and a 4 metre diameter hyperbaric pressure filter for dewatering. Duties of the existing regrind mills were reassigned.IntroductionThe Sullivan ore body is a massive sulphide deposit consisting of fine grained mixtures of sulphides, sometimes inter-banded with country rock and varying widely in their content of lead, zinc, iron and silicates. Principal economic minerals are marmatite and galena. Iron is mainly present as pyrrhotite (85%), and to a lesser extent as pyrite (15%) .The orebody has been actively mined since 1923, with 1992 ore reserves estimated at 15,800,000 tonnes with an average grade of 4. 7% lead and 7. 9% zinc. Current plans call for treatment of 1,600,000 tonnes/year, (7,000 tonnes per operating day), with flotation feed grades of 5.9% lead, 10.1% zinc, and 22.0% iron."

We document the occurrence, mineralogy and firing properties of magnesite from hydrothermal deposits in the upper Cretaceous ophiolites of Eastern Iran. These deposits occur as thin veins of nearly pure cryptocrystalline magnesite with only trace amounts of quartz, calcite, and dolomite. Ratios of CaO/SiO2 in the bulk ore are variable. The composition of dead-burned magnesite from these deposits, calcined at different temperatures and durations, is predictable from phase equilibria. Textures of the calcined magnesite were studied by SEM; results show that the principal impurites produced during calcination are forsterite, monticellite, merwinite, dicalcium and tricalcium silicates, and that these are located principally at triple junctions of the periclase crystals. The size of periclase crystals increased with temperature and duration of calcination and the amount of periclase-periclase grain contacts was reduced by increasing the concentration of impurities in the starting products. EPMA show: 1) that CaO and FeO contents in periclase increase steadily with an increase in the CaO/SiO2 ratio and the FeO content of the bulk ore, respectively, and 2) that limited solid solution exists between impurites. This study demonstrates that high quality dead-burned magnesia refractories can be produced from the Iranian magnesite with low CaO, SiO2 and FeO contents.

Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004, and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November 2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL)?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. IN previous metallographic work on titanium and its alloys, difficulty has been encountered in distinguishing spheroidal particles of titanium hydride, dispersed in a-titanium, from other phases that may be present, such as p-titanium. This problem is common in examination of commercial unalloyed titanium.' In the course of an investigation of the Ti-H phase diagram, it was noted that titanium hydride, dispersed in a matrix of a-titanium, showed strong optical anisotropy when examined under polarized light. With sensitive tint illumination, particles of the hydride, when the stage is rotated, changed from bright yellow to bright blue in color. Since P-titanium is cubic, it showed no color change on rotation, remaining dark gray or blue-gray. Although a-titanium is hexagonal, it showed only a minor color change, going from pale pinkish-blue to pale purplish-blue. These colors could be modified somewhat by adjustment of the illumination. They were observed in specimens mechanically polished, both without etching and after etching with hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid mixtures in either water or glycerine. The strong color change of the hydride seems to offer a simple method for its metallographic identification. Optical anisotropy of titanium hydride is inconsistent with its accepted face-centered-cubic structure.' Samples of iodide titanium containing 6 to 40 atomic pct deuterium were prepared for diffraction studies. After deuterating and slow cooling' the samples were held 21 % hr at 400 °C, water quenched, held 61 hr at 100°C and quenched, then held 64% hr at 255 C and quenched. Debye ex-posures with MoKa X-rays and 1.111A neutrons were made at room temperature of samples as-deuterated and after the 100" and 255°C treatments. Table I shows the lines observed, in addition to those attributable to a-titanium. These data show that the hydride phase was not cubic, but probably tetragonal. The titanium atoms appeared to form a body-centered-tetragonal lattice complex, two titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 3.12A, c = 4.18A, and c/a =1.34A. This is equivalent to a face-centered-tetragonal complex, four titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 4.42A, c = 4.18A, and c/a - 0.946A. The presence of the 2.98 and 1.81A neutron lines indicates that the true Bravais lattice is not identical with this lattice complex, but may be primitive tetragonal with dimensions some multiple of those of the complex. The relative intensities of the hydride and a-titanium X-ray lines as functions of overall composition indicated that the hydride, presumably in equilibrium with the a at 100" to 255"C, contained more than 62 atomic pct H. Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

This report summarizes the results of a nationwide investigation completed in 1964 to determine the nonferrous base metal ore reserves and potential sources of ore and to evaluate criteria for their ultimate exploitation. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines contacted mining company officials, reviewed reports and Government records, and where necessary made personal appraisals in arriving at the results. The estimates are presented by metals in ores in geographic regions and include some of the problems affecting the reserves and potential sources. The recoverable metal in the measured ore category and in the total ore reserves was estimated as follows: [ ] At the 1963 rate of domestic mine production these total reserves would be adequate to provide copper for 62 years, lead for 121 years, and zinc for 42 years. Data also are given for gold, silver, and other coproducts. Reserve estimates greatly exceed those of previous investigations; some prior estimates of copper reserves are included for comparison (table 23). Projections of requirements for base metals indicated the United States will need approximately 45 percent more copper in 1970 and 110 percent more by 1980 than was consumed in 1960; similar projections for lead indicate increases of 20 percent by 1970 and 45 percent by 1980; zinc projections are 40 percent more by 1970 and 90 percent by 1980. Much of the production of gold and silver is a coproduct of base metals recovery and the projected need for the precious metals exceeds all the United States can produce. Some problems of the industry are mentioned. A graphic evaluation of the economic availability of the reserve and potential sources is shown.

Various controlled and ambient tests were undertaken to evaluate the performance of a variety of digital heat stress monitors, psychrometers and simpler temperature/relative humidity data loggers that measure, or determine, such parameters as: dry-bulb, natural wet-bulb, psychrometric wet-bulb and globe temperatures. In this comparison, funded by the Deep Mining Research Consortium, it has been found that all the instruments can competently measure dry-bulb temperature but the accuracy of other sensors could introduce significant uncertainty. For example the quality of relative humidity sensors and failure to correct for the barometric pressure difference in deep mines, directly impacts upon the calculation of psychrometric wet-bulb. The comparison has shown that the response of dry-bulb and globe temperature sensors can vary widely under different radiant heat conditions; however this would be negligible in most mines. Of more concern is the differing performance of the natural-wet bulb sensors especially at low relative humidity and low air velocity. Furthermore, from these tests and the currently available theory it was not possible to determine if any of the natural-wet bulb instruments measured that value correctly or validate any relationship between psychrometric and natural wet-bulb temperature at low air speeds where their difference is greatest. Consequently the uninformed use of some of the commercially available environmental heat stress monitors or derivations from other instruments could provide erroneous results affecting the work load category that can be accommodated or the rest ratio regime required.

Within the last decade, major research discoveries have been made in the submarine realm of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of arc-backarc systems in the southwestern Pacific. These include identification of numerous particulate-poor, gas-rich (CO2-CH4) hydrothermal plumes emanating from arc front volcanoes, actively forming porphyry-copper-gold style mineralisation, and new backarc spreading systems erupting alkali basalt-trachyandesite magmas. Major goals of these studies have been identification of modern analogs to ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide ore bodies, and quantification of the volatile fluxes though supra-subduction zone systems.

Apparatus providing simultaneous differential thermal analysis, thermo-gravimetry, and evolved gas analysis, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines specifically for thermal study of oil shale and other solid, natural fuels. The apparatus is described in detail, and simultaneous analyses on a single sample of an oil shale mineral, nahcolite, and a thermal analysis demonstration compound, calcium oxalate monohydrate, are presented to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities.

New Gold Inc. had commissioned Orica to assist with the design of the drawbell blasting at New Afton Underground copper/gold block cave at Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Orica have had much success in developing the single-shot drawbell method at Freeport Indonesia in 2001 in the Deep Ore Zone and they will be using it exclusively in their new Grasberg Underground Operation. RioTinto Northparkes have also used the single shot drawbell blasting in their Second Lift E26 Project and even in the E48 orebody which is a post undercut block cave, realising the safety and operational benefits of this blasting method.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

The Red Dog sediment-hosted zinc-lead deposit is located in the Brooks Range thrust belt in northwest Alaska, approximately 1000 km northwest of Anchorage. The mine constitutes the primary deposit in a 400 square kilometre district, which hosts several other mineral occurrences. All the known mineralisation is hosted by the Mississippian Ikalukrok Member, deep basinal shale of the Kuna Formation, part of a Devonian to Cretaceous sedimentary sequence. The rocks underwent intense deformation during the Brookian Orogeny in Middle Cretaceous time. Several thrust faults juxtapose the stratigraphy. The Red Dog mine is composed of four deposits which together contain 105 Mt in resources and reserves for a total resource exceeding 18 Mt of Zn metal. The mine is an open pit with 25 foot high benches. The biggest challenge is not the Arctic conditions, but metal extraction, due to the fine grained nature of the mineralisation and the variability of the ore. The mine produces Zn and Pb-Ag concentrates that are shipped to smelters around the world from the Red Dog port facilities during the short summer period. Ore mineralogy is generally simple and consists of sphalerite, pyrite, galena and marcasite. The deposits are generally overlain by decametre thick exhalative barite horizons and exhibit strong silicification, which locally obliterates the original textures. Although described as a world class Sedex-type deposit, a large portion of the mineralisation exhibits sub-surface replacement textures. Moreover, unlike most other Sedex deposits, the reconstruction of the basin is made difficult by the structural complexity of the district. To assist exploration in the district, several assumptions are made regarding the deposit settings relative to metal source, growth faults or crustal extension.

"Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) is a Canadian-based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico. In 2010, AEM produced its first gold bar in Nunavut, Canada as it started its Meadowbank operation. It is also in 2010 that AEM acquired the Meliadine property, which is located 25 Km North of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The Meliadine gold project is an advanced exploration and development project, comprising of workers camp, underground and open mines, a processing plant and all the services facilities and infrastructures required to sustain operation in a remote arctic environment.Pending formal board approval, production start-up is planned for Q3 2019 and the process flowsheet is based on an ore processing rate of 1.1 million dry tonnes per year (3,000 dry tonnes per day from underground mining) for the first three years, and 1.98 million dry tonnes per year (5,000 dry tonnes per day from both underground and open pit mining) for the remaining years at 92% process plant availability.To the end of 2015, more than 45 metallurgical test programs have been conducted on the Meliadine deposits. Based on the results of these programs, an optimal gold circuit was designed, comprising of crushing, grinding, gravity separation and cyanide leaching with a carbon-in-leach circuit (CIL), followed by cyanide destruction and filtration of the tails for dry stacking. The assumed gold recovery for the reserves averages 96.0% at a 7.44-g/t gold average mill feed grade."

This paper focuses on the recent achievements and practices developed through the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) initiative of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), in conjunction with the three partner universities involved in mining engineering education – University of New South Wales (UNSW), West Australian School of Mines, Curtin University (WASM), and University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. The paper will then move on to future initiatives. Importantly, the exciting challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering – Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common 3rd and 4th year program to all three universities from 2007, involving innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process. Such an initiative is not without its challenges, and has a long way to go, before becoming a reality. However, it offers greater attractiveness and marketing potential to prospective students, as well as economic efficiencies, whilst delivering a better quality, and hopefully greater quantity of graduates to industry. It can also form a launching platform for a much greater level of international collaboration, through a proposed International Mining Education Network (IMEN) which is currently being floated amongst a number of international educators.

With an experimental apparatus developed recently, model tests on piles were conducted in sand subjected to triangular soil movement profiles. Four instrumented piles tests are reported, which show the pile behavior predominantly determined by soil sliding depth. Axial load can create additional bending moment and pile deflection, which also make mode of pile-soil interaction change with sliding depth. Limiting resistance was found 1.5~3 times higher than currently used for laterally loaded piles in sand.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sub) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

Gold mineralisation in the gabbro sills is mainly stratabound to quartz- and Fe-rich, granophyric-textured units and is sited in undeformed, brittle quartz vein sets, which form pipe-like orebodies. Hydrothermal wallrock alteration consists of hornblende-plagioclase-calcite-quartz with minor biotite, garnet and chlorite and with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as the dominant sulphides. Geothermobarometric data suggest that gold was deposited at around 520 degrees C at 2.8-3.8 bar. Mineralisation is thought to have occurred during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Fluid inclusion and isotope data indicate that gold mineralisation was the result of deposition from a low-salinity H2O-CO2-CH4 fluid of either metamorphic or magmatic origin. Although the Three Mile Hill deposit differs from others in the area in its wallrock-alteration assemblages, peak-metamorphic timing of gold deposition and distinct geochemical associations it forms a brittle stratabound ore body which suggests structural and gold-depositional mechanisms in common with those of the other gabbro-hosted gold deposits
