ETHIOPIA, the first country to be liberated from Axis domination, has recovered remarkably from the ravages of occupation and war. Mineral production has contributed significantly towards this recovery, as it has provided a means of obtaining foreign exchange and has given employment to hundreds of workmen whose maintenance otherwise would have presented a problem. Although primarily an agricultural country, never with a large mineral production, Ethiopia has within its borders a variety of minerals, both precious metals and nonmetallics. Some of these are important to the country as a national asset and others contribute greatly to local economy and can be expected to do so even to a greater extent in the future1 (Fig I). PHYSIOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY The Empire of Ethiopia is essentially a mountainous and volcanic country, in northeast Africa, situated principally between latitude 4° and I5°N and longitude 34° and 44°E. It is bounded on the north by Eritrea, on the northeast by French Somaliland, on the southeast by Italian Somaliland, on the south by Kenya Colony, and on the west by Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. These European possessions thus completely surround the country. Its access to the Red Sea is through Eritrea; to the Gulf of Aden, through French or British Somaliland; and, to the Indian Ocean, via Italian Somaliland. These routes range in length from 40 to 250 miles. Ethiopia has an area of approximately 350,000 square miles, with a width from north to south of 625 miles, and a maximum length from east to west, along latitude 8°N, of about 875 miles. Physiographically the country is characterized by two very extensive sub-tabular plateaus: the Ethiopian Plateau to the northwest and the Somaliland Plateau to the southeast, separated by a long tectonic graben-the Rift Valley of the Galla Lakes and Danakil. The Ethiopian Plateau, deeply cut and notched by the drainage, slopes in a general northwest direction toward the Sudanese Plains and the valley of the Nile; the Somaliland Plateau slopes to the southeast, toward the Indian Ocean. The valley of the Galla Lakes and its extension to the northeast-the Awash River Valley, separates the plateaus, from Lake Rudolph to Danakil. This depression which constitutes a continuation or ramification of the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa joins in turn the trough of the Gulf of Aden and the Danakil-Eritrean Rift, continuations of the Red Sea and the Jordan Valley. The general basement of Ethiopia is made up of very old rocks, usually considered as Archaen.2 These rocks are represented by the metamorphic crystallines, such as gneisses, different kinds of schists, included lenses of crystalline limestone, and massive intrusives such as granites, diorites, and syenites, all cut by

A study zvas made of the deoxidation of copper at 1170°C by injecting a jet of carbon monoxide vertically upwards into the melt. The effects of submersion depth (2 to 20 cm), orifice diameter (& to 5 in.), and gas velocity (100 to 3650 ft per sec) were examined. In the oxygen range 0.1 to 1.0 pct 0, the overall rate was conlrolled by gaseoLcs mass Lransfer. The results were interpreted in terms of a rate coefficient per unit depth which was found to be constant with distance along the jet axis and nearly proportional to the orifice Reynolds number in the range 1000 < NReo < 9100. AS the gas flow rate through an orifice submerged in a liquid is progressively increased, at least three regions of bubble formation may be distinguished. At very low rates, the formation of bubbles is practically a static phenomenon, depending on the orifice diameter, the liquid surface tension, and the densities of the two phases. In this region, the bubble size is constant while the frequency of bubble formation increases with gas flow rate.&apos;-3 At higher flows (500 < NR~, < 2100), the frequency of bubble formation reaches a steady value and the bubble size increases with gas flow rate; when the bubbles issuing from the orifice become so large that they start coalescing to form larger bubbles, the turbulence induced in the liquid by the passage of previous bubbles shatters them into small bubbles of varying size. Finally, for gas velocities in the intermediate and turbulent regions of flow (NR,, > 2100) a tangential separation surface is created around the jet and momentum transfer takes place between it and the surrounding liquid medium. The entrainment of liquid and the resulting deceleration of the gas-liquid dispersion causes the jet to expand forming a characteristic jet cone. The large velocity and density differences between the jet and the liquid result in a high degree of instability and the jet envelope fluctuates rapidly.The characteristic jet cone can be observed by means of time exposure photographs such as those shown in Fig. 1 for an air jet introduced vertically upwards in a water bath. High-speed photography has showns that the gas-liquid dispersion within the cone consists of small bubbles the size of which depends mainly on the jet orifice diameter and Reynolds number. In the laminar region of flow, the following correlation was obtained by Leibson: The results of Liebson et a1.&apos; are plotted in Fig. 2. It can be seen that the region 2000 < NReo c 10,000 is not well-defined experimentally. In the entrance to the fully turbulent region of flow (NR,, = 10,000), the mean bubble diameter decreased to about 0.4 cm and varied only slightly from there on according to the correlation:

Tries article summarizes the successful incorporation of a flash-flooding stream into the tailing-disposal system at the St. Joseph Lead Company&apos;s Federal Division mill, in St. Francois County, Missouri. The mill was built in 1906, by the Federal Lead Co., as its No. 3 mill for the concentration of southeastern Missouri lead ores, and damming Davis Creek was first considered in 1908. Plans were made also in 1925 and in 1937. Dam layouts varied from a reinforced concrete structure to a barrier built of tailings alone. All were abandoned because of liability that would be incurred by flashflood rupturing of an incompleted dam. By 1942 mill capacity had reached 12,000 tons daily and increasing tailing-disposal costs again focused attention on the Davis Creek basin. This time the problem of riskless dam building was solved. Moreover, most of the items that appeared in the answer were materials that normally required wasting and the major portion of labor involved performed functions that it would normally have done, without constructive benefit, elsewhere. The new layout also made possible advantageous changes in mill-water supply pumping; static head being reduced from 514 ft to 95 ft, friction head from 4900 ft to 2860 ft, and pumping can be done now at periods of low power demand. The following facts about the Davis Creek watershed explain the 36-year reluctance to reach these, and other, benefits. Size: 3600 acres. Outline: roughly pear-shaped, 2 1/2 by 3 miles at the largest dimensions. Topography: mostly hill land with steep valleys. Relief : 760 minimum to 1153 maximum. Maximum rainfall: 3.36 in. per hour. Permanent water: none natural. Now 2200 gpm discharged through 16-in. drill hole from mine pumps underground. Geology: the 17 acres near dam centerline is Bonne Terre dolomite covered with sand and gravel eroded from Pleistocene beds that cap some of the hills. The remainder of the pond basin is on Davis shale. Soil cover: mostly second-growth timber with some abandoned fields; all subject to careless burning, which reduces water-retaining ability. Flood history: flash-flooding that had taken at least one life. Downstream values: two railroad bridges before creek intersection with Flat River. Immediately below confluence, a highway bridge, a low-water crossing, a few business establishments and several blocks of residences. In July 1942 the following segments of an ingenious plan were put into operation. A ditch 270 ft long, 16 ft wide and 5 1/2 ft deep was excavated to bedrock in the gravelly soil along the proposed dam&apos;s centerline. This excavation, which exposed many gravel-filled channels, was run full of slimes drawn from a riser set in the top of an adjacent tailings-disposal

Previous gas well test analyses have been based mainly upon linearizations of ideal gas flow results, although a method for drawdown analysis based upon real gas flow results has been proposed. Linearizations based upon ideal gas flow require estimation of gas physical properties at Tome sort of average pressure, and implicitly involve the assumption that pressure gradients are small everywhere in the reservoir. A new real gas flow equation has been developed by means of a substitution which couples presTure, viscosity and gas law deviation factor. This sub-stitution has been called the real gas pseudo-pressure. Use of the real gas pseudo-pressure leads to simple equations describing real gas flow which do not contain pressure-dependent gas properties, and which do not require the assumption of small pressure gradients everywhere in the flow system. Equations required to determine flow capacity, well condition and static formation pressure from pressure drawdown and build-up tests with the real gas pseudo-pressure concept are presented. Also shown are applications of the real gas pseudo-pressure to back-pressure testing, the gas materials balance and rigorous determination of average gas properties for previous gas flow equations. Included are sample calculations for well test analyses. INTRODUCTION A recent study&apos; of the flow of the transient flow of real gases in ideal radial systems showed that it is possible to consider gas physical property dependence upon pressure by means of a substitution called the real gas pseudo-pressure. The substitution has the advantage that it enables engineering solutions for steady and transient flow of real gases that are more accurate and general than those previously available. The solutions are particularly important for the case of gas flow in tight, high-pressure formations under large drawdowns. Even for more ideal flow conditions, the real gas pseudo-pressure concept leads to important rules for finding average gas physical properties pertinent for older well test analyses. Ref. I provides a detailed study of the theory behind the real gas flow correlations to be used in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to provide necessary engineering forms for use of the real gas flow results, and to illustrate applications. The following considers flow of real gases in an ideal radial flow system. It is assumed that: (1) formation thickness, porosity, water saturation, absolute permeability, temperature and gas composition are constant; (2) gas compressibility and density are functions of pressure as described by the gas law pv = znRT; (3) gas viscosrty is a function of pressure; (4) effective permeability to gas may be a function of pressure to account for liquid condensation; (5) condensate is immobile; and (6) the formation has no dip.

This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.&apos; It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. In 1931 the Philadelphia Company acquired by lease several coal mines in southern Greene County, Pennsylvania. These mines were known as the "Dora," "Seventh Pool" and "Rosedale" mines in the Sewickley seam, and the "Rosemary," "Seventh Pool" and "Warwick" mines in the Pittsburgh seam. All these mines are in the immediate vicinity of Greensboro, Pa., with considerable river frontage on both sides of that village. The mines in each seam are contiguous and to some extent the properties in the two seams lie one above the other. In 1938 the property known as the "Sandy Run mine," in the Sewickley seam, adjoining the Dora mine, was purchased from the Fredericktown Coal and Coke Co. Altogether, by purchase and lease, the company gained control of approximately 3400 acres of coal land in Greene County, from which it was estimated that some 20,000,000 tons of coal could be extracted. Geology of Warwick Properties Both seams of coal outcrop along or near the river on both sides of the town of Greensbgro. They lie on the eastern slope of the Lambert syncline, near the southern end of the axis, consequently the predominant dip of the seams is away from the river, so that development for river handling has the unavoidable disadvantage of adverse grades for haulage to the outside. Predominant grades away from the river at right angles to the "butt" cleat of the coal average about 2.25 per cent dipping in a westerly direction, but local dips occur, which are considerably greater. Predominant grades parallel to the river and at right angles to the "face" cleat of the coal average about one per cent dipping in a northerly direction. Both seams of coal lie in the Monongahela formation, the Pittsburgh bed being the bottom measure of the formation and the Sewickley bed lying about 90 it. above. Approximately midway between the two lies the Redstone coal bed, which is generally thin and of erratic occurrence and therefore of little commercial value. It is mined only locally where it attains sufficient thickness. Sewickley Bed The Sewickley bed is commonly called the "five-foot" or Mapletown" seam, because in Pennsylvania it reaches its greatest thickness and has been mined most extensively in the vicinity of the village of illapletown, approximately one mile west of Greensboro. In the early development of the Warwick properties, which occurred near the river, the seam had an average of 5 it. 2 in. in height. As development proceeded away from the river, however, the height gradually decreased until the average height of the present workings is about 4 ft. 6 in. An experimental investigation of the relative effectiveness of standard bullets and "shaped charges" in perforating dense, hard formations is reported. A method is described which simulates the conditions under which a shot is normally fired. Results are evaluated on the basis of depth of penetration, extent 01 Fracturing. extent and nature of formation damage, and other physical characteristics. INTRODUCTION A study was made of the relative merits of bullets and "shaped charges&apos;&apos; as applied to well completions in hard, dense formations such as those encountered in the Permian Basin. The planning of the laboratory program stipulated that core samples should be prepared and mounted in such a way that perforation shots of either kind"" could be fired into them, keeping the factors pertinent to good shooting practice similar to what they would be in a well. The shooting was done in a buried tank. with the sample and shooting equipment covered with water. The depth of water was calculated to he sufficient to simulate the inertial effects of well fluids for the duration of an explosion (a few micro-seconds). Flow measurements were attempted on the specimens after perforation. Due to the lack of uniformity of the limestone, shale breaks. etc., these measurements proved to be of little value to the study. The mounting materials were removed. so that the character of the penetration. fracturing, etc., could be observed. METHOD Laboratory samples were selected from the hard. dolomitic sand cores from Block 31 Field. Core pieces having a 3 3/4 in. diameter and a useful length of 10 to 12 in. were used. Selection was aimed at those pieces having a minimum of shale streaks and other irregularities. The ends were cut off square Manuscript received in the Petroleum Branch office June 28, 1951. Prior to lbeing mounted. the cores were soaked in water to prevent them from absorbing water out of the wet concrete, thus weakening it. A set of steel capsules was fabricated for holding the core Samples. Seven-in. casing was cut in two-ft lengths. of which one end was closed by "orange-peeling" and welding, and the other was threaded to accept a standard bull plug. The bull plugs were fitted with copper tube connections .so that pressure could be applied when the capsules were made up. The cores were mounted in the capsules by means of wire centralizers whose function was to hold the Core in proper position while concrete was poured and set. The behavior of nitrogen in Cr-0.12 at. pct Y was studied in specimens of varying interstitial concentration and thermal history. It was found that soluble nitrogen can be introduced into this alloy by increasing the concentrations of either oxygen or nitrogen. For low nitrogen concentrations the nitrogen in solution is low relative to that in unalloyed chromium. However, the nitrogen in solution increases with increasing nitrogen concentration, approaching that in unalloyed chromium. When the alloy is supersaturated with nitrogen, the nitrogen precipitates readily from solution as a chromium nitride. The stress -induced relaxation of nitrogen is influenced by internal oxidation or internal nitrification of this alloy. THE addition of small concentrations of reactive elements such as yttrium have been found to enhance the low-temperature ductility of chromium.&apos; However, the mechanism by which the ductility is increased is not known. It has been suggested that this effect is caused by a drastic reduction in the concentration of nitrogen retained in solution and therefore a decrease in the number of dislocations locked by nitrogen, a factor that has been associated with an increase in ductility.1,2 However, a change in the type of interstitial precipitate induced by yttrium could also contribute to enhanced ductility of the alloy, since chromium nitride precipitates appear to be embrittling.&apos; In this regard, it has been shown that yttrium scavenges nitrogen in chromium to form YN,4 thus reducing the embrittling chromium nitride phase. However, the change in nitrogen solubility induced by yttrium and the partition of nitrogen between chromium and yttrium nitrides are not known. The object of this investigation is to study the effect of yttrium on the behavior of nitrogen in chromium to obtain information relevant to the mechanism by which scavengers enhance the ductility of chromium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The experimental procedures used in this investigation have been described in detail elsewhere.5,6 Wires of Cr-0.12 at. pct Y, 15 cm in length and 1 mm in diam, were drawn from rods 0.6 cm in diam supplied by the General Electric Co. The grain size of the wires after recrystallization at 1150°C was somewhat nonuniform, varying from 0.006 to 0.06 mm in diam. The interstitial analysis for the wires in ppm by weight was about 160 0, 80 N, 12 C, and <2 H. Heat treatments were carried out after encapsulation of the specimens in quartz tubes containing argon. Changes in interstitial concentrations, or interstitial "loading" as it is termed in this study, were generally accomplished by annealing in oxygen, ammonia or methane at 1150°C. The internal friction was measured using a conventional torsional pendulum enclosed in an evacuated chamber. Electrical-resistivity measurements were made at liquid-nitrogen temperature.

The tensile characteristics of Zr-Fe binary alloys containing up to 5 atomic pet Fe are reported for the temperature range —195o to 500°C. A linear relation between stress at constant strain and volume fraction ZrFe2 was found. The coincidence of data from unalloyed zirconium with zero volume fraction ZrFe2 indicated little or no solid solution in IL-zirconium, in agreement with Hayes, Roberson, and O&apos;Brien.&apos; The absolute increase in strength due to particle strengthening, although decreasing with increasing temperature, was a greater percentage at high temperature. ZIRCONIUM is of interest for use in nuclear reactors because of its low neutron absorption, good corrosion resistance, and high melting temperature. The alloying of zirconium with iron has been considered as a means of increasing the mechanical strength of zirconium without seriously increasing the neutron absorption " over that of unalloyed zirconium. The Zr-Fe system has a eutectic at 934°C and 23.7 atomic pet Fe and a eutectoid at 800°C and 4.0 atomic pet Fe. The zirconium-rich end of this system determined by Hayes, Roberson, and O&apos;Brien&apos; is shown in Fig. 1. The intermetallic phase coexisting with a and ß-zirconium has been reported as Zr2Fe3,1 with a,, - 7.04A, and as ZrFe2,2 face-centered-cubic, the phase being of the MgCu, type (C-15). It was more recently agreed to be ZrFe33 and face-centered-cubic. This intermetallic phase is essentially insoluble in a-zirconium, the hexagonal-close-packed modification; and the lack of solubility makes the system particularly interesting metallurgically. The system is strengthened almost exclusively by particles of in-termetallic phase, and there is very little solid solution strengthening to complicate the analysis. The Bureau of Mines, in its survey of zirconium-base alloys,&apos; reported the tensile properties of Zr-Fe alloys made from chloride process zirconium, induction melted in graphite crucibles, and swaged at 850°C in iron sheaths. Additional data on these ZrFe alloys were given by Hayes, Roberson, and O&apos;Brien.&apos; Chubb and Muehlenkamp% have recently reported the strength of Zr-Fe alloys containing up to about 1.25 atomic pet Fe. These alloys were made from crystal bar zirconium, hot worked at 820°C, annealed at 700°C, and tested both at room temperature and at 316°C. Experimental Procedure The materials used in this investigation were high purity zirconium made by the iodide process and electrolytic iron. The composition of the zirconium as obtained by spectrographic analysis and the nominal composition of the iron are given in Table I. Alloy ingots weighing 100 g were made by are-melting under argon in water-cooled copper crucibles in a multihearth furnace."

In the past most of the research in pelletizing has as its aim the production of a physically strong pellet. Now that this problem is solved, more attention is being paid to uniformity in grade and chemical composition. Consideration has been given in recent years to a study of additives which will make pellets partially or fully fluxed. Blast furnace tests show fluxed pellets to have advantages over both fluxed sinter and acid pellets. Lower slag volumes are used more frequently in the blast furnace and the uniformity of the charge, both physically and chemically, is becoming increasingly important. A considerable improvement can be secured by having all of the flux uniformly distributed through the pellets in a calcined state. A fluxed pellet, therefore, should be a superior product. The use of an ore burden that contains an appropriate quantity of fluxing materials is not new to the blast furnace industry. For years the Minette ores of France and Germany, the Clinton ores of the Birmingham, Ala., areas, as well as others, which are low in iron but contain calcium carbonate in sufficient quantities to give them self-fluxing properties, have proven economical. The adaption of the sintering process to the preparation of ore burdens provided a means for artifically associating the fluxstone with the iron ore prior to charging to the blast furnace. In 1944 Torpl discussed the effects of using lime in sinter made in Sweden on the sinter&apos;s metallurgical performance in a blast furnace. Hessle2 reported in 1945 on the advantages of using lime in sinter to increase the sintering plants&apos; capacity and reduce fuel requirements. Robinson3 discussed the use of lime in Swedish sintering practice at the 1950 Blast Furnace, Coke Oven, and Raw Materials meeting. One of the suggested advantages was the combining of lime with silica to prevent the formation of a fayalite slag, which is difficult to reduce in the blast furnace. Nilson4 at the same meeting commented briefly on experimental work that had just started in the U. S. on the use of lime in sinter. The literature tends to indicate that most of this early work was directed towards improvement in sinter physical quality, and the fact that the feed to the blast furnace was partially fluxed was incidental. It was not long, however, before blast furnace advantages were being claimed. The matter was forcibly called to the attention of North American operators by reports of remarkable production records established by the Russians using fluxed sinter. The leading step was taken on this continent by the Steel Company of Canada in 1957; McMahon5 reported on the marked improvement in performance of an 18-ft blast furnace using fluxed sinter at its Hamilton works. Other North American operators quickly followed theStelco lead.

In view of the unfavorable discovery trend that has set in during the past few years, it seems permissible to infer that the large, more easily found crude reserves in Louisiana are now known. Without doubt, many new producing areas will be located, but in the light of development during the past few years the majority of new areas probably will be found at greater depths and from relatively poorer sands. f Although sufficient reserves exist in Louisiana to last at the present rate of production for a considerable period, additional reserves must be found in more intensive development of the presently known structures. In order to ensure the greatest ultimate recovery from such structures, the most advanced technical methods must be employed in their exploitation. Wherever possible, cycling and repressuring plants should be installed. &apos;here are presently in Louisiana, especially in south Louisiana, a great many fields that contain gas-condensate reservoirs. These reservoirs cannot be produced for their liquid hydrocarbon content under present conditions without wasting an enormous quantity of gas and creating underground waste. Although some of these reservoirs are being produced, such production must be considered in the nature of a salvage operation rather than as a sound economic proposition. Such reservoirs, however, can become profitable ven- tures through the use of cycling and repressuring plants. Cycling operations now operating in Louisiana have increased the ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs anywhere from 10 to 30 per cent. Cycling operations will also provide a considerable reserve of gas, without which Louisiana cannot hope to develop any program of industrialization. During the past year, Louisiana attained the rank of third among the oil-producing states of this country. With a proper program of exploitation and development, and with emphasis on conservation, Louisiana can maintain this position for a great many years. Production On Dec. 31, 1943, oil and/or gas were being. produced in 52 parishes, or 81 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 14 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. Tensas Parish in north Louisiana and Assumption Parish in south Louisiana formerly contained no producing fields but during 1943 joined the ranks of the producing parishes. Twenty-three new fields, including one rediscovery, were found during 1943-—a rate of discovery almost comparable to that of the preceding year. Eleven of these new discoveries were either gas or gas-condensate fields. Thus, the trend of development in finding new reserves was also comparable to that of 1942. Many reasons of considerable merit have been advanced to account for the discouraging lack of crude-oil reserves found during the past year. None are, however, completely satisfactory.

IT is necessary occasionally to use aluminum-alloy sheet where moderately elevated temperatures are encountered. Considerable attention has been directed toward determining the influence of "artificial aging" on the room-temperature properties of the precipitation-hardenable alloys, as testified by numerous company reports and by references 1 to 4. Investigations on the properties at elevated temperatures are few, however,5-7 and have not always covered the range of times and temperatures of greatest interest. The present investigation was instituted to overcome this deficiency. The work was done for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board, under the supervision of the War Metallurgy Committee, as a part of the "restricted" Project NRC-548. It has been released for publication by the Office of Production Research and Development. As is well known, the high-strength aluminum alloys achieve their remarkable properties as a result of precipitation-hardening. In production they are subjected to a solution heat-treatment followed by quenching, to retain the supersaturated solid solution. The solution treatment is followed by "aging" (precipitation-hardening) either at room temperature or at a suitable elevated temperature. A considerable increase in tensile and compressive yield stresses results from precipitation at room temperature ("natural aging"). Through the elevated-temperature process ("artificial aging") it is possible to obtain values of yield stress considerably higher than those attainable by natural aging. The increase in yield stress is accompanied by a smaller gain in ultimate tensile stress and by a decrease in elongation. Further exposure results in "overaging," attended by a steady decrease in yield stress. Recently reported high -temperatlnre thermal data have been incorporated in a reuieu&apos; of the therinody-r~ar,zic propesties of iron. The recent data permit mot corlsisterlt and reliuble choices to be made for many of the pvoperties, resnlling in bettev eslablished tabrtlations of the thermodynamic functions. Values of Cp, h°t- - H°298. s°t - S2sa, and (G°T -H298/T are tabulated for -the solid and liquid phases of iron in both stable and melastable regions. Consistency of the tabulations has been maintained to the precision necessr~vg to yield the Gibbs energy change belween the bcc (a, 8) and fcc (y) phases of iron at temperatures pertinenl to alloy studies. THE importance of the metal iron has stimulated many investigations of its thermodynamic properties at elevated temperatures. Reviews and summaries of the data have appeared from time to time. Among these the 1951 paper of Darken and smith&apos; deserves highest recognition for the quality of its criticism and for the precision and thermodynamic consistency of its tabulations. These and the more recent table of Kaufman, Clougherty, and weiss2 reproduce the Gibbs energy of the (a, 6)--Y transformation with sufficient sensitivity for alloy studies. Other recent compilations of equal validity3-&apos; make no attempt to do this. Since this Gibbs energy change is not greater than 22 cal per g-atom over the temperature range 1100° to 1800°K, it is obviously desirable to tabulate values of (G°t - H298)/T to four places of decimals even though the absolute accuracy would not warrant such precision. The necessity for reconsideration of the problem is emphasized by the recent publication of several important researches on the enthalpy and heat capacity of iron. The older work is well-covered in the reviews cited and will be mentioned here only when actually employed in the tabulations. GAMMA IRON Transition temperatures are taken from the selec -tions of Elliott and Gleiser,5 based on the work of Boulanger7 and earlier workers. For the a-y (A3) transition at 1184°K we retain the value 215 cal per g-atom adopted by Darken and smith.&apos; It has received confirmation in the recent work of Dench and Kubaschewski,&apos; and of Braun8 using adiabatic calori-metry, and of Wallace, Sidles, and Danielson10 using a pulse heating technique. The enthalpy data of Olette and ferrier" and of Anderson and Hultgren12 at higher and lower temperatures may be extended to 1184°K to give the following values which are adjusted to the required value of ? 1184 Ha,1184 Ha 298 = 8030 cal per g-atom [11 hr,1184-ha298 = 8245 cal per g-atom [2]

Four binary alloys in this system were creep tested at 300°&apos; to 600°F. A photographic study of microstructural changes showed that the outstanding creep resistance results primarily from a potent precipitation hardening locally at grain boundaries. Twinning was correlated with the primary stage and nonbasal slip with the tertiary stage of creep. THE utility of the rare earth metals as ingredients of magnesium alloys destined for elevated temperature application has been recognized for about 15 years. A review of the early development of these alloys has been given by Leontis. 1,2 It has been only recently that a desire has arisen to understand basically their remarkable creep resistance. The present research had that object. The work of Leontis showed that the differences between the behavior of the individual magnesium-rare earth element binaries was of commercial significance. However, the variations were small compared to the overall difference in creep resistance between the group as a whole and the magnesium alloys of the Al-Zn type. It was decided to conduct this investigation with one binary system which would be representative of the magnesium-rare earth element alloy group. Cerium was chosen as the solute because of its near-middle position in the series and because of its availability in the commercially pure form. A previously published description of the creep behavior of electrolytic magnesium" serves as the background to this research. The experimental approach used in that investigation has been partially repeated here. A series of binary alloys was planned to include the following: 1—A dilute alloy which would contain the cerium almost entirely in solid solution. This would assess the solid solution effect. 2—An alloy which is nearly saturated at the selected solution heat treatment temperature, 1070°F. Here the effect of nearly maximum precip- itation would be obtained without the influence of undissolved Mg-Ce intermetallic. 3—An alloy containing slightly more cerium than is soluble at 1070°F. This would allow the investigation of the effect of a small amount of excess intermetallic. 4—A high cerium alloy in which the influence of a large volume of undissolved intermetallic may be examined. Experimental Details In order to specify compositions of the binary alloy series a knowledge of the solubility of commercially pure cerium in solid electrolytic magnesium and also of the composition of the terminal intermetallic phase was necessary. The latter has been proven to be approximately Mg,Ce by Voge14 and Haughton and Schofield.5 A series of both cast and extruded alloys were solution heat treated 24 hr at 1070°F for a solubility determination. When a plastically deformed mctal is heated to a certain temperature, it undergoes a complete change in microstructure, the consequence of which is a marked alteration of mechanical properties such as hardness, strength and ductility. This change in microstructure occurs by re-crystallization and is a process involving the formation and growth of strain-free nuclei in the deformed matrix. These nuclei continue to form with time and grow until a new grain structure replaces the cold-worked structure. The formation of the nuclei in the deformed sheet of I per cent silicon ferrite is illustrated in Fig. I. If a recrystallization is conducted iso-thermally, a nleasurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time leads to an isothermal recrystallization curve, first established in 1942.1 Such recrystallization curves are shown in Fig. 4. These curves show that the recrystallization of a cold-worked metal is best considered as a rate process rather than a time independent process such as is suggcsted by the improperly named and misleading recrystallization diagrams involving deformation, temperature, and grain size.2-5 Any study of the rate of recrystallization resolves itself into a study of the component rates of nucleation and growth. The previous paper1 provided an account of the determination of the rates of nucleation; N, the number of nuclei formed per unit time per unit of unre-crystallized area, and growth, G, the radial growth in unit time, in the recrystallization of silicon ferrite (I per cent Si). A method was developed to furnish experimental data for evaluating the effect of the recrystallization variables on N and G. The mathematical analysis for the derivation of the isothermal recrystallization curve was developed for a two-dimensional case (in thin sheets where the diameter of the recrystallized grain is greater than the sheet thickness). The present paper is a continuation of the study of recrystallization of I per cent silicon ferrite begun in 1942.1 In this work the effect of the factors deformation, temperature, grain size, composition, and recovery is studied with respect to the rates of liucleation and grouth. At the same time it is shown how the cooperation of N and G affects the isothermal recrystallization curve. The study of these variables on N and G has a definite bearing on the mechanism of recrystallization and should lay a foundation for a rational theory on the subject. Procedure The procedure used in these experiments was essentially the same as that described previously but in certain details some changes were made in the interests of speed. With few exceptions, the procedure is the same for the study of all the variables. Where the procedure is different from standard manipulations attention is called to this fact.

The loading of bituminous coal mechanically was recognized about the year 1900, but during the following 28 years less than 5 per cent of the bituminous production in the United States was loaded by mechanical means. During the past 16 years, however, the usage of some form of mechanical loader has had a very rapid and accelerated growth, until at present production of bituminous coal by mechanical means has reached an all-time high of approximately 46 per cent, and is still increasing. This rapid growth in the use of the mechanical loader has been supplemented by an increase. in mechanical cleaning. The importance of mechanical cleaning of coal was recogniaed many years before the mechanical loader was introduced. because of the impossibility of cleaning manually the sizes below 2 in.. and the increasing competition from other fuels. Utilization of mechanical loaders without nleclianical cleaning 011 the surface for at least one or more sizes is the exception, rather than the rule. One exception is a mine that employs caterpillar-mounted mobile loaders exclusively, and mines the entire seam without any selectivity, and yet loads and ships six grades of coal of the very highest quality without mechanical cleaning. Such a fortunate situation can exist only where mining conditions are ideal, where top and bottom are exceptional and there are no impurity partings, and where there is loader height. The conversion from hand loading to mechanical loading has definitely introduced many problems in the preparation plant of yesterday and in the modern streamline plant as well. Many of these problenis have been solved by good, sound, conscientious initiative on the part of the plant personnel, with minor expenditures; the solution taking the pattern of rearranging 2nd improving the equipment at hand. Other problems have caused, and are causing, considerable concern and difficulty. Large Impurities The removal of large quantities of large impurities from the lump coal, and their handling and disposal, is definitely a troublesome and costly problem. The cost of manually removing the impurities from the picking table alone, based on the actual recovered lump coal, can reach a cost of 42 cents per ton or more. In the design of future plants it would be wise to give this phase of preparation considerably more time and thought, particularly if the seam of coal contains one or more heavy partings and the mining procedure is all seam. This same caution applies to seams that may not contain heavy partings but have poor and heavy draw-slate top, which falls with the coal during the mining cycle. One of the more recent of the modern preparation plants has answered this problem by installing a rock crusher under the picking table in such a manner that the impurities can be diverted by gravity directly to the crusher. Since the first determination of Dumas1 in 1880, many authors have tried to measure the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum, or at least the amount of dissolved gas in it. However, the interpretation of the results which have been obtained is still difficult. Sieverts? then Baukloh and Oesterlen,a during their gassing experiments could not determine any solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum. On the other hand, Portevin, Chaudron and Moreq4 leaving the determination of the hydrogen solubility beyond the scope of their experiments, measured only the amount of gas that they could extract by high voltage positive ion bombardment and found up to 151 cm3 of gas per I00 g of metal. Winterhager,6 by repeated vacuum extraction during severe cold rolling, extracted up to 161 cm3 per 100 g. In both series of experiments, the extracted gas contained chiefly hydrogen with a small amount of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methan. Later, Schmidt and von Schweinitze as well as Chaudron and Moreau7 showed the importance of the adsorbed layer of hydrogen, the extracted quantities being proportional to the surface and not to the weight of the sample, when its cleaning was not perfect. In earlier experiments, Steinhausers extracted from more massive samples nothing but a little amount (< 0. 5 cm3 per I00 g) of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. Thus, according to these experiments the quantity of dissolved gas is probably very small and the effect of the surface could falsify the results of the extraction. However, owing to the care taken by Chaudron and his coworkers, it was clear that all the hydrogen extracted could not come from the superficial layer, or that the links which bound hydrogen to the surface were so strong that the usual method of cleaning could not destroy them. After the main parts of the experiments reported here had already been carried out, Eborall and Ransley9 published the results which they obtained with an analysor having an accuracy of 0.03 cm3 per I00 g, while that of the usual apparatus was only about 0.2 cm3 per I00 g. During all their experiments the adsorbed layer would have been a difficulty, for the value of the adsorbed hydrogen was approximately equal to that of the dissolved amount.
