INTRODUCTION Additional work has been done on the CIP circuit at Creede, and a brief description of this work is presented in this paper. DREDGE The original dredge for the Bulldog was built by Al Hack, Inc. of Denver. The dredge cutter head is mounted on a boom made of 6-inch diameter pipe which is raised and lowered by a cable-pulley system. Maximum cutting depth is 8 feet. Slurry from the dredge flows through a floating 6-inch diameter pipe supported on 55-gallon drums which runs from the dredge to the shore and then to a trash screen and pumping system. See Figures 1 and 2. The cutter head, suction pump, winches for dredge movement, and all other operations are controlled from a small operations house located toward the rear of the dredge. All of the basic dredge equipment is mounted on a chassis about 8 ft x 16 ft in size. Additional buoyancy was originally provided by sealed 55-gallon drums supported along the sides of the chassis by a small wooden framework. Additional framework and barrels on the front of the chassis on either side of the cutter boom provided additional stability, particularly when digging in hard material. The dredge was quite stable, but two problems were apparent. For one, it could have been sunk by someone from the shore firing a rifle into all of the barrels. The distortion of crystal structures referred to as "biege gleitung",1 "local curvature"2-4 and "deformation bands"5,6 is believed to be an unavoidable characteristic of deformed single crystals. The presence of asterism on Laue photograms of Al single crystals either deformed by pure shear7 or extended in a condition relatively free from the grip effect2 indicates strong evidence substantiating this point of view. The type of localized bending described in connection with the bending test of Al single crystals by Yen and Hibbard8 could conceivably exist either microscopically or submicroscopically in all types of deformation. The purpose of this note is to extend this idea to the postulate of a hypothetical "microbending site," as applied to the mechanism of slip in a general sense. The mosiac structure, as postulated by Darwin,9 is that crystals were actually composed of small blocks which have a linear dimension 10—4to 10-6 cm on the edge and deviate from each other by an angle of about one-tenth of a degree. The following discussion is based on the assumption that when slip is propagated from one mosaic block to the adjacent one, bending of the lattice at the region of their boundary is produced in order to maintain the continuity of the gliding process along a certain slip plane. Consider a two-dimensional diagram of two ideal mosiac blocks on the cross-section perpendicular to the slip plane and containing the active direction of slip. When an external force is applied, the localized bending or "microbending site," would be generated at the region as illustrated in Fig 1A at point B. A schematic diagram of a "microbending site," generated at a mosaic boundary, is illustrated in Fig IB. It may be seen that once the curvature of the bending site reaches sufficient magnitude, the interaction force encountered by pairs of atoms symmetrical with respect to the center of the bending is equal but opposite in sign. Consequently, the overall energy required to displace the atoms near the center is approximately zero.10"12 Based upon the finding that the misalignment between two mosaics is 0.1 degree,9 the assumption is made that "microbending sites" may possibly exist in the region where one plane will have one more row of atoms than an adjacent plane. It is probable that the origin of the bending site will be where the distance between two mosaic boundaries is "2d" as shown in Fig 1A at point B, where " d" is the interatomic distance. Thus, the distance between two "microbending sites" is in the range of about 600 interplanar spacings. In the case of aluminum, the spacing between two octahedral planes is about 2.33 A. The distance between two bending sites will be approximately 2.5 X 10"5 cm. Wrought-iron eye-bars for bridges and roofs, designed upon what is known as the pin connection system, have been successfully manufactured in this country for some years. The most approved methods employed have been the hydraulic upsetting process, and by die-forging under a hammer. In upset eyes the fibre of the iron is necessarily much distorted ; and in bars of considerable size, this disturbance seriously impairs the strength of the connection. Mr. Collingwood, in discussing my paper on "Proportions of the Heads of Eye-bars," read before the American Society of Civil Engineers, Jan. 21st, 1874, submitted sketches of certain bars intended for the anchorage of the East River bridge, which had been exposed to the action of sulphuric acid a sufficient length of time to thoroughly cleanse the surfaces, and expose the condition of the fibre. These sketches are here reproduced for the purpose of illustrating the effect of this method of manufacture. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it will be observed that the fibres at A, and E, have been folded back upon: themselves and otherwise twisted and disturbed, in a manner not calculated to inspire confidence in the integrity of the connection. To compensate for this defect, a large excess of metal is thrown into the eye; but a method of manufacture which involves such a necessity, even although it be the one giving the best results thus far, all things being considered, is far from being perfect.

DIE steel with 1.47 pct C, 0.42 pct Mn, and 8.22 pct W contains Fe,C and WC in the annealed state and WC embedded in a martensitic matrix in the hardened state (quenched from 800°C). The presence of a large amount of undissolved angular WC carbide particles makes this steel extremely wear-resistant. However, the WC carbide begins to dissolve in the austenite when the heating temperature is raised above 1000°C, but this solution process is still not complete at 1250°C although partial melting has already taken place at the austenite grain boundaries. At 1325 C, this steel contains austenite and liquid metal but no WC carbide, Fig. 1. On quenching into brine, the liquid metal solidifies into a constituent which etches differently from the austenite-martensite matrix. This constituent appears lighter than the matrix at the 1250°C stage when etched with 2 pct nital but darker in Fig. 1 when etched with Murakami's reagent. Such a constituent has also been found in burnt tungsten high speed steels. This constituent has been isolated from the matrix by anodic dissolution in a 5 pct HC1 electrolyte and was found by the X-ray powder method to be iso-morphous with &manganese, Table I. The agreement in line intensity between these two phases indicates that there is no ordering in this new phase. The calculated cube edge of this phase is 6.395A, somewhat larger than that of ß-manganese (6.30A). Besides this phase, the anodic residue also contains free carbon from the matrix and amorphous WO,, although the X-ray powder pattern of the residue shows the presence of only this phase. This makes it impossible to determine directly the composition of this phase from the residue. Attempts to prepare an alloy containing only this phase have hitherto been fruitless. The following experiments serve to show that this phase can only be obtained by drastic quenching from the liquid state and that its tungsten and carbon contents must be lower than those in the Fe,W,C carbide. On air cooling from 1325oC, the liquid metal solidifies into a eutectic consisting of austenite and the Fe3W3C carbide. The nature of this dark-etching Fe3W3C has also been ascertained by X-rays. This eutectic becomes coarser on furnace cooling. The solidification of a specimen cooled for 5 min from 1325" to 1200°C and water quenched is still not complete and the fine eutectic is formed during the quenching. Since this new phase can be replaced by a eutectic of austenite and the Fe,W,C carbide, its composition must lie somewhere between the latter two phases. The special features of this phase are: 1—it can only form directly from the liquid state by drastic quenching and 2—it is a ternary phase of iron, tungsten, and carbon. The ß-manganese structure of this phase is also interesting. In the Periodic Table, iron and tungsten lie on opposite sides of manganese; a certain combination of these two elements, in the presence of carbon, may have average properties similar to those of manganese. It has already been established that the x phase, a ternary one of iron, chromium, and molybdenum, has the a-manganese structure."' A similar phase has also been found in the ternary system Fe-Cr-W and in the following binary systems: Re-Cb, Re-Ta, Re-Mo, and Re-W.6 References 1 G. D. THE Hopkinson bar has become a popular technique for the measurement of the mechanical properties of materials deformed at high strain rate. Maximum use of the equipment is made in the arrangement first used by Kolskyl in which a short compression specimen is sandwiched between two pressure bars and is loaded by a single pulse travelling through the system. The pressure bars are used both to apply the load to the specimen and as transducers to obtain continuous strain-time histories of three pulses, incident on, reflected, and transmitted by the specimen. The data measured by the pressure bars can be analyzed in terms of the stress/strain behavior of the specimen.2'3 However, one of the assumptions of the analysis of the observed pulses is that the total stress and total strain do not vary significantly from point to point within the specimen at any given instant during the deformation process. Although this assumption is generally justified for very short disc-like specimens2 the situation is uncertain for larger specimens. For example, at small plastic strains (-0.01) Hauser et al.2 have some evidence of small flucations in the total stress within the crystal during deformation, even in relatively short aluminum specimens. In addition, Karnes4 has shown that the plastic strain, and by inference strain rate, is different at each end of a compression specimen tested in a Hopkinson bar, although the length of the specimen was not specified. Recently, the mechanical properties and the dislocation substructure have been investigated in single crystals of columbium5 (length 0.25 in., diam 0.19 in.), and copper6 (length 0.5 in., diam 0.5 in.) deformed at high strain rates. As part of this research program the assumption that the plastic strain is constant throughout the specimen has been checked by measuring the total dislocation density as a function of position in the specimen. Compression specimens of the same orientations and dimensions were tested as described previously5,6 sing a split Hopkinson bar. Since any discontinuity in strain distribution is most likely to arise during the initial stages of deformation the investigation was performed on specimens deformed to plastic shear strains of 0.054 (copper) at a strain rate 1.2 x l03 sec-1, and 0.06 (columbium) at a strain rate 1.5 X l03 sec-1. The orientation of the single crystals is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Thin foils were taken parallel to the most highly stressed slip plane, i.e., (111) in copper and (011) in columbium, using conventional disc techniques. The dislocation densities were measured using first order reflections with compensation for invisible dislocations.5'6 In the copper single crystals the discs were randomly distributed throughout the cross section of the specimen. However, the dislocation density obtained from each disc was plotted vs the disc positions relative to the ends of the specimen. The results for the copper specimens are shown in Fig. 1. Clearly the dislocation density is constant throughout the main portion of specimen within the experimental error. The error bars on the dislocation densities correspond to a shear strain variation of 0.015 on the basis of previous measurements% ± of the rate of increase of dislocation density with strain in copper single crystals of the same geometry. Thus within this experimental error the plastic strain can be concluded to be constant within the specimen and the assumptions used in the analysis of the stress/time curves are therefore reasonably valid. The higher measured dslocation density near the impact end and the lower dislocation density at the bar end of the copper specimen is in agreement with the results of Karnes4 who showed that this strain/time curve rose to a maximum more rapidly at the impact end compared with the bar end. Hauser et al.2 have also pointed out that at small plastic strains (-0.01) the strain at the impact end of the specimen may be greater than that at the bar end. Thin foils taken from different points within the columbium single crystals demonstrated that the dislocation density could vary significantly within the specimen, see Fig. 2. Large areas of some thin foils up to 30 µ sq contained very few dislocations, see Fig. 2(a). However, in other parts of the compression specimen dislocation configurations like those shown in Fig. 2(b) existed over large areas (-30 µ sq). As a result, when the average dislocation density in a thin foil is plotted as a function of the position of the thin foil relative to the ends of the specimen, considerable scatter is observed, see Fig. 3. [Two of the most useful and important equations available to the metallurgist for the study of plastic deformation of metals are the Huber-von Mises-Hencky1-3 and the St. Venant7-10 equations. HUBER-VON MISES-HENCKY EQUATION The Huber-von Mises-Hencky equation answers the question: When does plastic flow occur in metal that is subjected to a multi-axial stress? It occurs, according to this equation, when the three principal stresses,? al, a2, and a3 satisfy the equation: (s1 - s2)2 + (s 2 - s 3)2 + (s 1 ? s3)2 = 2K2 [I] Here K is the yield strength of the material as determined in an ordinary tensile test. If the quantities a1, a2, and a3 are assigned to the coordinates of a Cartesian three-dimensional system, this expression describes a cylinder whose axis of symmetry is inclined at equal angles to the three coordinate axes4,5 (Fig. I). The radius of this cylinder is v2/3K. For the purpose of simplicity, it is sometimes advantageous to ascribe the values s 1/K = si, s 2/K = s2, s 2/K = s3 to the three coordinate axes instead of the principal stress alone. In this case, Eq. I becomes (s1 - S2)2 + (S2 - S3)2 + (Sl - S3)2 = 2 [2] and the radius of the cylinder becomes 2/3v. In the latter method of representation, a point lying inside the cylinder indicates that the metal will react elastically, whereas a point lying on the cylindrical surface indicates that the metal will behave plastically. Some of the geometric features of this cylinder are worthy of study. Let us inquire first as to what interpretation may be placed upon what we will choose to call the "circles of latitude" of the cylinder (L in Fig. I) and the "meridians" of the cylinder (M in Fig. I). Circles of Latitude Circles of latitude are formed by allowing a plane, passing perpendicular to the cylinder axis, to intersect with the cylinder. Any point, P, on this circle is presumed to have the coordinates s1, s2, and s3. The coordinates of the point resulting from the intersection of the plane and the cylinder axis will be a, a, and a (since the cylinder axis is equally inclined to the three coordi¬nate axes). Let us now pass a line through the point on the circle and the point on the axis.]

TWENTY-TWO sections and all four of the divisions sent delegates to the annual meeting. They became so interested in the wide ranging dis6ussion of old and yet ever-new problems of Institute affairs that three instead of two sessions scheduled were necessary. Monday morning the meeting assembled with President Bassett presiding in the absence of President-elect Tally, who had been called to Baltimore by the serious illness of a brother. Thursday morning Vice-president Turner presided until Mr. Tally appeared after which the latter guided the sessions. Since reports from all of the active sections save one had been mimeographed and sent in advance to the delegates, detailed reports from each were dispensed with. The discussions dealt largely with membership problems, both local and national, with financing, speakers and programs, visits from national officers, and the conduct of the annual meeting. Many interesting and constructive suggestions were made and will be reported back to the sections by the delegates.

THE following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Hand- book and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman.

The objective of this chapter is to review and discuss interpolation techniques commonly in use in the mining Industry today, including simple examples. This chapter will not attempt to compare the relative accuracy of each technique as this subject has adequately been covered by several authors (Knudsen and Kim, 1967; David, 1974; and Barnes, 1979) When appropriate, methods will be compared relative to the results of simple examples and computational ease. The examples presented are based on metallic deposits. The techniques, however, are not restricted to metallic deposits and can generally be applied to nonmetallic ones. The purpose of interpolation, as applied to a mineralized deposit, 1s to extend the knowledge of the grade and geology of localized samples to an estimate of the grade and mineralogy of a larger block of ground or even an entire deposit. The word interpolation means to compute values between given values and is limited to that region between the known values. The distinction between interpolation and extrapolation is important and must be adhered to in the application of these techniques in general, the interpolation must be limited to the area enclosed by verified samples. The methods being discussed can be broadly broken into three categories. ( 1 ) geometrical methods, (2) distance weighting methods, and (3) geostatistical techniques.

EVERAL carbide-cobalt compositions were pre-^-5 pared for the purpose of determining the transverse rupture strength of various carbide-binder systems. The binder content was held at 10 and 37 volume pct Co, so as to be representative of low and high bjnder compositions. The carbides used, WC, Tic, TaC, CbC, VC and ZrC, were selected on the basis of availability, knowledge of their properties, and small solid solubilities in the binder metal at room temperature. The methods of preparation and carbon analysis of the carbides are summarized in Table I. The carbides with cobalt added were ball milled, pressed, and sintered. vacuum sintering was used throughout, except for the WC-Cs alloys, which were sintered in hydrogen. The sintering temperatures ranged from 2500" to 2750°F for the low binder alloys and from 2300" to 2550°F for the high binder alloys. Compositions and properties of the sintered com- pacts are presented in Table 11. For the transverse rupture strength, the average and range of the five best samples of each alloy are listed. Discrepancies between the actual and theoretical densities are attributed to carbon deficiencies in some samples. The theoretical densities were calculated by assuming mixtures of carbides of stoichiometric compositions and cobalt. Representative microstructures are shown in Figs. 1 to 6. The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.

THE physical-chemical behavior of the system Pb-S-0 is of prime importance to the understanding of lead smelting processes, yet little accurate information is available on either equilibrium or kinetic behavior in this system. This paper is the first report of a program designed to fill gaps in our knowledge of this system. In the total ternary Pb-S-0, the region of greatest metallurgical interest is that bounded by the compositions Pb-PbS-PbS0,-PbO-Pb. Systems richer in sulfur, or richer in oxygen,* than those essentially pure SO2. This conclusion follows from the fact that all systems are in a highly reduced state, since either PbS or Pb is a constituent of all the equilibria. The content of 02, SO3, S2, S6, S8, and so forth, can be shown to be negligible compared to SO, in all such systems.* corresponding to this region can only be obtained at gas pressures exceeding 1 atm, a condition seldom met in lead smelting practice. Not only is the present study limited to condensed phases within this portion of the total system, but it is limited to temperatures at which all phases are pure solids, except for lead, which is liquid. In this limited system the following seven condensed phases are known to exist: Pb(l), PbS(c), PbO(c), PbSO,(c), PbSO,•PbO(c), PbSO4 • 2PbO(c), and PbSO, -4PbO(c). PbO exists in two crystal modifications,' but only the high-temperature yellow form is considered here. Schenck and co-workers2-4 reported the compound PbSO4 3Pb0 to be stable at high temperature, but the more recent work of Lander,5 and the present work, prove that the tetra-basic sulfate, rather than the tri-basic sulfate is stable. Fig. 1 shows the composition diagram for the binary PbO-PbSO2, based primarily on the work of Lander. In this study the univariant boundaries and invariant points existing among these seven condensed phases and the gas phase have been determined. In a ternary system, the phase rule indicates that an invariant point involves the simultaneous equilibrium of five phases—four condensed phases and the gas phase. A univariant relation involves four phases—three condensed phases and the gas phase. The gas phase in the systems studied is The following stable univariant equilibria between SOz and the condensed phases were identified: (a) PbS + 7PbS04 = 4(PbSO, - PbO) + 4SO2 (b) PbS + l0(PbS04 • PbO) = 7(PbSO4- 2PbO) + 4SO2 (c) PbS + 8(PbSO4 • 2PbO) = 5(PbSO4 . 4PbO) + 4SO2 (d) Pb + PbSO, • 4PbO = 6PbO + SO2 (e) 3PbS + PbSO4 . 4PbO = 8Pb + 4SO2 (f) 3PbS + 16(PbS04 PbO) = 7(PbSO4 . 4PbO)+ 12SO2 (g) 2PbS + PbSO,2PbO = 5Pb + 3SO2 (h) Pb + 3(PbSO4 . 2PbO) = 2(PbSO,. 4PbO) + SO, Of these eight univariant equilibria, five were measured in this work (a, b, c, d, and g) and the behavior of the other three (e, f, and h) was calculated by thermodynamic analysis of the measured data. Two invariant points were found corresponding to simultaneous equilibria as follows: Point 1: PbS, PbSO4PbO, PbSO4.2PbO, PbSO, - 4PbO, and SO2 Point 2: Pb, PbS, PbSO, . 2PbO, PbSO, - 4PbO, and SO2, From the measurements it was also possible to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the three basic sulfates of lead at 298.16°K. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus—The experimental method consisted of the measurement of the gas pressure exerted by a given reaction mixture at a given temperature. The Holden mine operated by the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. is on the east slope of the Cascade Range in north central Washington on the south slope of Railroad Creek valley at an elevation of 3500 ft. The mine may be reached by a 40 mile boat trip from the town of Chelan which is at the southern tip of Lake Chelan, to Lucerne at the mouth of Railroad Creek and an 11 mile bus ride up Railroad Creek to Holden. All freight and concentrate is moved over this route to Chelan Falls on the Columbia River which is on the railroad four miles below the town of Chelan. The mine is now producing 2000 tons of gold, copper, and zinc ore per day which is treated in the Holden mill. Gold-copper and zinc concentrates are made, the first of which is shipped to Tacoma, Wash., and the latter to Kellogg, Idaho, for smelting.

There are four main requirements to be considered in selecting a wire rope that will provide the best service. A proper choice is made by correctly estimating the relative importance of each of these requirements and choosing a rope with qualities that will best enable it to withstand the combination of destructive forces expected under continued service. A Good Rope Choice Matches Strength with Stress A wire rope should be (1) strong enough to sup- port the maximum load anticipated with a proper safety factor, (2) able to withstand bending and to resist bending fatigue without failure of the wires, (3) able to withstand surface abuse such as abrasion, pounding, and wire scrubbing, and (4) able to take abuse such as crushing and distortion.

The solubilities of copper and gold in silicon and germanium have been determined by equilibration of the solid semiconductors with coexisting liquidus phases. The experimental results were combined with estimated activity coefficients of the liquidus alloys to determine the following partial molar enthalpies and excess entropies of solution for the systems: Solubility measurements were also carried out below the eutectic temperature of the copper-silicon system. The partial molar enthalpy and excess entropy of copper in silicon with respect to Cu3Si were determined to be 40.2 ±0.5 kcal per mole and 9.7 i 0.5 cal per mole — OK, respectively. It has been dentonstrated that nu-cleation and growth of intermediate compounds are retarded in copper-silicon diffusion couples. This points out the dangers of determining equilibrium solubilities by dijjusion methods. THE thermodynamic requirement for equilibrium between contiguous phases at constant pressure and temperature is that the chemical potential of each component be constant throughout the system. Drilling in Missouri in 1943 continued at a lower rate than in 1942, only 28 wells being completed. Following the completion of the Cities Service Oil Company's No. I Jim Cook near Tarkio, in the northwest corner, NW. 'fi sec. 32, T. 65 N., R. 39, W., Atchison County, four dry holes were drilled by other parties, all a mile or more from the Cook well. Later the Cities Service Oil Co, completed No. 2 Cook for 60 bbl. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 23,83134 ft., of which 12,802 1/2 ft. was by cable tools and 11,029 by rotary. Four of the dry holes were drilled into Mississippian or older beds.

ALL critical and strategic materials procurement functions have been transferred from the Defense Minerals Administration, General Service Administration, and the Economic Cooperation Administration and are now centered in a newly formed agency, the Defense Materials Procurement Agency. DWA will report directly to the Director of Defense Mobilization. Mr. Truman stated that he intended to appoint Jess Larson, administrator or General Services to head the new agency (see Trends P. 756). W. C. Schroeder has been named acting director of the Defense Minerals Administration replacing James Boyd. He has been named also to a newly created assistant director position of the Bureau of Mines serving under Mr. Boyd who is director. Schroeder was formerly head of' the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Division of the Bureau of Mines.
