THE methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins" inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walls until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. . My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the. "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tremolite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit.

It is perhaps significant that a few years ago the sessions held here were chiefly occupied with production. In the last two years these sessions have been concerned with production curtailment, unitization and conservation, notwithstanding that production in the United States in 1929 reached a total in excess of 1,000,000,000 barrels. A study of the leading producing units in the United States shows that Oklahoma, Texas and California in 1929 yielded 84 per cent. of the total production from 33.5 per cent. of the total number of producing wells. Production in the United States in 1929 showed an increase of 107,000,000 bbl. over the 1928 figures. This increase in itself perhaps is not enough to have caused the serious situation that is now confronting the industry. However, taking into account the gradual encroachment on the consumption of fuel oil through the greater utilization of natural gas, probably we have reached the point in the United States where prices will determine to a large extent,' in 1930, the amount that will be produced. In the states of Texas, Oklahoma and California, the most significant developmcnt of 1929 has been the desire of operators to reach some agreement to bring production more or less in control with the estimated demand. In November, production in California, particularly in the Santa Fe Springs field, was drastically cut to meet a certain requirement. Similarly, in Texas, the Yates field has been developed and has been producing under an agreement on the part of the operators; and more recently in Oklahoma City, serious efforts have been made to keep produetion in line with consumption. For the year 1930 we can see nothing in sight except drastic curtailment. This is a matter that I am sure is occupying the attention of all the leaders of the industry.

THE crystal structure of Zral, the compound richest in zirconium (91.03 pct Zr by weight) in the system Zr-Al, has been found to be ordered face-centered-cubic. This compound is of particular interest, since it is encountered as the precipitated phase in potentially useful zirconium-rich alloys. It forms peritectoidally from body-centered-cubic zirconium and Zr,Al at about 975°C. The Zr-A1 constitution diagram has been reported by McPherson and Hansen.' For the primary determination a 100 g ingot was prepared by arc-melting in a water-cooled copper crucible under purified argon. The raw materials were crystal-bar zirconium (a purity of better than 99.7 pct) and spectroscopically pure aluminum. The ingot was double melted, examined metallographi-cally, and found to be quite uniform as shown in Fig. 1. The hardness of the as-cast button was VHN 390 to 445. A 20 mil diam specimen was prepared from annealed (900°C) filings of Zr,Al. The specimen was mounted in a 5 cm radius powder camera and an 8 hr exposure was taken using copper radiation with a nickel filter. The structure of the compound Zral was found to be ordered face-centered-cubic of the Cuau type, with an a,, value of 4.37220.003A. Its calculated density is 5.976e0.013 g per cu cm. The relative intensities for the lines were calculated using the formula 1+cos2 20 I oc----------------- • p • /F7 sin2 0 cos 0 1 + COS' 20 where----------------is the Lorentz polarization fac- sin2 0 cos 0 tor, p is the multiplicity factor, and F is the structure factor. The X-ray data are given in Table I. The compound has exhibited plasticity when present as particles in a matrix of a zirconium. During hot working at about 900°C, the compound has been found to deform plastically to the extent that some of the particles exhibit a length-to-width ratio greater than 4:1 as shown in Fig. 2. In answer to the discussion of ref. 1, McPherson and Hansen pointed out that the compound may be cold rolled and reduced as much as 33 pct. Zr,Al has also been found2 under certain conditions to precipitate in lamellar form at grain boundaries of the a phase of hexagonal-close-packed zirconium. MULTIPHASE diffusion has been studied for many years in two-component systems1,2 and many of the experimental aspects are now fairly well understood.314 Although by no means all of the problems connected with the two-component case have been solved,' attention has recently been directed to the more complex situation involving three components. The pioneer work of Clark and Rhines6 yielded a qualitative picture of the types of behavior that can occur, and Clark7 has suggested conventions for describing the various phenomena. Kirkaldy and co-workers8,9 have made quantitative studies in several ternary systems and have offered explanations of the occurrence of isolated and nonisolated precipitates. At present, however, there is no comprehensive theory for the variety of phenomena observed in ternary, multiphase diffusion. By analogy with several studies that have been made of multiphase diffusion in the binary Cu-Zn system,2'10'11 a similar exploratory study was made of Cu-Zn-Ni alloys lying along the line in the ternary diagram from the point 80 Cu-20 Ni to the zinc corner of the diagram, Fig. 1. A principal question to be answered was whether initially plane interfaces would remain plane during the course of one-dimensional diffusion. The diffusion specimens studied are described in Table I. The five separate alloys from which they were made were melted in evacuated Vycor capsules from 99.9 pct purity copper, zinc, and nickel. Since some of the alloys were too brittle to be swaged, all of the alloys were used in the cast condition. To facilitate later homogenization, the molten alloys were solidified by plunging the capsule in water. Homogenization heat treatment was done at 720°C for 20 hr. The five nominal compositions in weight percent zinc and nickel, respectively, were: 37.5, 12.5; 44.0, 11.2; 50.0, 10.0; 55.0, 9.0; 65.0, 7.0. Ln Table I the alloys are identified only by their zinc content. Sandwich-type diffusion specimens were prepared by pressure welding disk specimens, each about 3 mm high by 10 mm in diameter. Welding was done in a special threaded vise which was heated at 500°C for about an hour in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen. A measurement of the separation of the phase interfaces was made on a polished flat on the welded specimen, and then the specimen was sealed in an evacuated capsule and given the diffusion treatment shown in Table I. An annual invitational address by an outstanding man in mining, geology, or geophysics who has contributed significantly to the progress of technology in these fields. IN 1954, the first year the award was conferred, Fred Searles, Jr., remarked, "The earlier years are the easiest." In this, the second year, it was easy to choose the outstanding mining engineer. Our conferee this year has been destined to mine. He comes from pioneer stock, and though a son of the American Revolution he is most proud that all four of his grandparents came to the Jordan River Valley of Utah the "first summer," which all Utahns will recognize as 1847. At the time of discovery of high-grade ore in Bingham, his grandfather, Archibald Gardner, had a crew of men getting out saw timber in the area. The first claim staked in Bingham Canyon was named the Jordan, and Bishop Gardner was the colocator of the claim as well as the man to record it. E. D. Gardner was born in West Jordan, Utah, in view of Little Cottonwood Canyon, the site of the Emma Mine. Park City in the Wasatch Mountains a few dozen miles to the east, and Tintic, not much further to the south, were developing their vast ore-bodies throughout his youth. As a boy he was near the present Midvale metallurgical area and could see the Lark and Bingham Canyon mine dumps and imagine the mining activities at Tooele, Ophir, and Mercur just over the nearby Oquirrh Range. He was 11 years old when the first car of copper ore was shipped from Bingham Canyon. It was not surprising that he attended the University of Utah and graduated with an engineer of mines degree. Five years with the Utah Apex in Bingham Canyon as chief engineer and assistant superintendent completed his training for the 44 years of unselfish and lightly rewarded service he was to give the mining industry as a Government engineer. All of us in mining are familiar with the great work he carried on and directed during the genera- tion he supervised the Southwest Experimental Station at Tucson. He has written scores of papers and books. His observations and experiments on drilling and blasting have led to the important improvements in this field during the past quarter century. Whereas those of us who consider ourselves widely informed about underground metal mining methods make hasty trips through a half dozen or dozen mines a year, our conferee has visited them all—not only the metal mines, but also coal and hundreds of nonmetallic mines, in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and overseas. His keen observations and analytical mind have resulted in an encyclopedic knowledge of mining and mines. His improvements in mining technology have been steady and predictable. His elucidation of mining problems to the many young engineers that have come under his guidance have made them grow strong and useful to his industry. When he chooses to stop, his influence will continue to expand and prosper because of the inspiration and dedication he instilled in so many of us. The profits from his ideas have been distributed throughout the mining industry. He has remained a technical man who felt that he could serve the mining industry best as a Government engineer. But he is the staunchest advocate of the belief that the public should gain from his work through private industry. This is not the first recognition E. D. Gardner has received. The Department of the Interior awarded him the coveted Medal for Distinguished Service in October 1949, and he received the Engineering & Mining Journal's Salute in March 1951. His friends who are presenting him the Daniel C. Jackling Award today know this great mining engineer simply as "Ed" Gardner.

WELL known as an outstanding practical metallurgist, the Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division also possesses a rare combination of research and administrative abilities. Louis W. Kempf was born in Muskegon, Mich., on March 22, 1898. Following his graduation from high school, he obtained considerable experience in the automobile industry while employed by Continental Motors, the Studebaker Corp., and Dodge Brothers. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in 1917, and served overseas with an aviation unit. In 1919, Mr. Kempf entered the University of Michigan and earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees. While there he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Chi Sigma, and Gamma Alpha. In 1924, the Aluminum Co. of America secured his services as a research metallurgist. With a steady job he married Elizabeth Skelley in Cleveland in 1926. They have one son now seventeen. After six years Mr. Kempf was made manager of the Cleveland research division of the Aluminum Research Laboratories which position he held until last year. In 1945 he was promoted to assistant director of the Laboratories. He will direct research involving process metallurgy in Cleveland and New Kensington.

ABOUT the time this magazine reaches its readers, Cresap P. Watson will celebrate his 53d birthday. If he spends that birthday at his West Los Angeles home, he won't be far, as distance is measured today, from Santa Barbara, where he was born on July 8, 1895. He is truly a member of a petroleum family; one brother, N. O. Watson, managed Royal Dutch Shell interests in Venezuela for years and is now general manager of the Caribbean Petroleum Co. at. Maracaibo; another brother, Rex, is vice-president of the Drilling and Exploration Co., while brother-in-law Ben Belt is an executive of Gulf Oil. His own life has centered in the petroleum industry since his first job in 1913 as camp cashier for a Mexican oil field at Tampico. Down on the isthmus of Tehuantepec he advanced to tool dresser and' production foreman for the company. The first World War interrupted his Mexican experience by transforming him into an artillery officer in France. Once the Army ceased to demand his services¬by then it was 1919-he returned to the task of furthering his professional career as agent for the Amerada Petroleum Corp. By 1927 he had reached the position in which he could be called an executive in the petroleum industry, having organized and become president of the Federal Royalties Co. His activities in local and national legislation affecting the petroleum industry increased as has his advocacy of the development of oil and gas fields under sound engineering and conservation principles through unitization or other co-operative forms of operation. Considerable amounts of his time go to the promotion of industry public relations.

"In 1899 the American Refining and Smelting Company obtained control of the East Helena Smelter, and have added improvements from time to time.The plant is four miles east of Helena, on the Northern Pacific and Great Northern railroads, with hourly street car service from Helena.Electric power is obtained from Canyon Ferry dam, twelve miles east on the Missouri river, and about 800 h-p. is used in the blowing engines, crushing machinery, cranes and locomotives.Besides the Montana ores convenient to the above railroads, a large part of the ore supply comes from the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, and is mainly lead ore and concentrates.A modern automatic sampling mill, with Vezin samplers and a capacity of 50 tons per hour, was completed in 1912.Three blast furnaces, each 48 inches by 136 inches, are now in continuous operation, and the monthly production of silver-lead bullion is six thousand tons.A part of the ore roasting is done in Godfrey furnaces, in connection with the Huntington-Heberlein process, 12 pots being in use, with a capacity of 300 tons per day.Four Dwight-Lloyd sintering furnaces, each 42 inches by 264 inches, and a smaller experimental machine, with a combined capacity of 440 tons per day, are in steady operation, and are successfully roasting ore as well as sintering flue dust. These machines are in great favor and results are being carefully watched.Three bag houses are used in connection with the 1,800 brick flue chamber, and each bag house contains 1,260 cotton bags, each 18 inches in diameter by 30 feet long, suspended on vertical roads. The product saved by the bags contains about 50 per cent lead and is retreated in the blast furnace after sintering.About 450 men are employed."

"The pumping of the underground water of the Butte mines is largely done from two central plants of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The mines of one part of the mining district are served by a modern and mechanically efficient underground plant at the High Ore mine, and the remaining part by a similar one at the Leonard mine. Properties not affiliated with the A. C. M. Co. have separate pumping plants, although in several instances that company handles the water of outside companies, under which arrangement costly single plants are dispensed with. An extensive system of underground crosscuts and drifts connects these mines to both the main pumping plants, so that either may receive the water from all the mines in case there should be a failure in the other to perform its designed service.Quintuple) vertical electric pumps, 7 inches by 12 inches each, of a capacity of 600 gals. per minute under a head of 1,203 feet, are installed at both the plants. Each pump is direct connected to two 150 h-p. motors using 2,300 volts, the motors being on top of the pumps.At the High Ore plant the power cable of 400,000 c. m. is placed in a nearby shaft, the cable at present being hung from the surface to the 2,200 level. From this cable feeders of 300,000 c. m. are laid in connecting crosscuts to the pumping station at the High Ore shaft.The Leonard motors use 440 volts. The practice of building the pumps with the motors on top requires stations with high roofs, but permits the operation of the pumps if they should be submerged by an unusual flow of water."

FRIEND recently remarked that the career of Scott Turner is characterized by Work and Wild -A Ducks. To these might be added Accomplishment and Persistent Fishing. All of these elements are manifestations of his character. The diversions-hunting and fishing-are in the nature of the proverbial trolley conductor's holiday, for many of Turner's years have been spent in the outdoors, often in distant lands, as in Spitzbergen, where the ducks pictured below were bagged. The election of Scott Turner to the presidency of the Institute marks the culmination of a quarter century of membership, during the last two years of which he has been vice-president. He was born at Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880, and received his A.B. at the University of Michigan in 1902, with a B.S. and E.M. at the Michigan College of Mines in 1904. Since then he has been granted two honorary degrees, D.Sc. from the Colorado School of Mines, and D.Eng. from the University of Michigan, but he still prefers to be called "Scott" rather than "Doctor." Government service was not a new experience for Turner when he was appointed Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines by Secretary Hoover in 1925, for his first employment after graduation was as Field Assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey in Oregon and Idaho. This was followed by work in Tombstone, Ariz.; then his first foreign engagement in 1905-6 as superintendent of the San Pablo Gold Mining Co. in Panama. Various field experiences followed, though there was an interlude in work of a kind that few mining engineers ever experience. This was in technical journalism, for in 1906 he was

The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

Mr. A. Bement, Chicago, Ill. (communication to the Secretary*) :—Mr. Campbell, in proposing his method of sampling coal-seams, has rendered an important service in insisting on the presentation of an adequate history of the sample; and it is to be hoped that his suggestion will meet with further recommendation. In my opinion it is fully as important that a complete description of the sample and the conditions surrounding its taking be given, as the results of the analysis itself; and if such should become standard practice, coal-analysis would assume greater value. As it is, the published data are very confusing, and only to an extremely small extent are they really useful. The method suggested by Mr. Campbell, however, cannot have a general application; for example, in the Eastern Interior coal-basin, particularly at the present time, the output consists largely in grades other than mine-run, which in Illinois, for the year 1905, was only about 24 per cent. of the total product; and inasmuch as Mr. Campbell's method of sampling cannot give values for any other grade than mine-run, my contention that, at best, it can have but a limited application, is apparent. To illustrate the argument, there are two coal-seams, with the characteristics of which I am particularly familiar; each seam, as it lies in the ground, contains almost exactly 10 per cent. of ash; the lump coal from one of these seams ranges from 10 to 11 per cent. of ash, but from the other seam it does not average more than 6 per cent., although, as before mentioned, the average percentage of ash in the full seam is the same for each case. A careful and proper sampling of coal-seams, to be followed by analyeis, is to be commended in connection with all investigation; in fact, it should precede any careful study. A serious error, however, may be made in attempting to use such results to set values on the product as shipped or received. The only

IN times of a falling metal market the mine operator attempts to remain in competition by lowering his overall cost and raising the grade of ore he processes. But these adjustments can be made only within narrow limits imposed by inherent characteristics of the operation. Is there some additional method whereby the break-even point can be lowered? One approach, perhaps the only one, to lower a break-even point is careful cost analysis considering both fixed and variable costs in relation to mining rate. The following is an analysis of cost distribution and its significance in determining the most economic combination of the factors of ore grade and tonnage output applicable to a given mining operation.

THE ARGONAUT' mill stands at the crest and spreads down the western slope' of a hill, which incidentally covers the' outcrop of the Argonaut vein' at this point. The collar of the main shaft of the mine is situated on the eastern slope of the same hill 120 ft. below the highest ?point. The present mill, built in 1916, was designed to treat 250 tons per 24-hr. day. This capacity has not been attained recently owing to the inability of the mine to produce enough ore while extensive development and underground construction were under way. At present, however, the mine is more than able to take care of the mill requirements.

The analysis of laminar flow of power-law non-Newtonian fluids in narrow, eccentric annuli is employed in this paper to discuss the problems of lubricant flow in journa! bearings and of errors introduced by eccentricity in experimental studies with concentric annuli on extruders and wellbore annuli. The velocity profile and pressure loss-flow rate equations are developed for the laminar flow region. In addition, the expected error in flow rate and pressure-loss measurements for concentric annuli as a result of eccentricity is determined. For example, a 10 per cent displacement of the core of an almost concentric annul us would cause a 1.8 per cent decrease in the observed pressure loss for a fluid with a power-law exponent n of 0.25. The corresponding increase in the observed volumetric flow rate would be 7. 5 per cent. INTRODUCTION Non-Newtonianism and eccentricity occur simultaneously in two engineering problems: (1) flow of lubricants in journal-bearings and pressure-reducing bushings, and (2) flow of non-Newtonian fluids in plastic extruders and wellbore annuli. The lubricants used for moving parts are often non-Newtonian in character — often they are plastic in behavior. A solution to the problem of flow of non-Newtonian fluids in narrow eccentric annuli is particularly pertinent to this problem. In all experimental studies of laminar flow of fluids in concentric annuli, such as in extruders and well casings, the error due to eccentricity must be estimated or studied. A number of publicationsl-4,6,7 have dealt with this problem for Newtonian fluids; however, I am not aware of work for non-Newtonian fluids. This work is directed to the non-Newtonian problem. Before the solution to the problem is given, the pertinent conclusions from the work on Newtonian fluids will be reviewed. Heyda 1 and Redberger and Charles 2 have published general solutions to the problem of the laminar flow of Newtonian fluids in eccentric annuli, apparently without knowing of the earlier work of Ca ld well 3 and Bairstow and Berry,4 which is reported by Dryden, et al. 5 Although several mathematical routes are encompassed by the work of these authors, the results appear to be equivalent. Redberger and Charles2 show that the error caused by eccentricity in concentric annuli is negligible for small diameter ratios (k < 0.5); however, for large diameter ratios (k + l), the error in the predicted flow rate can be as great as 100 per cent or more. Partial solutions to the problem are available from the work of Dryden,5 Tao and Donovan6 and Piercy, et a1.7 Tao and Donovan examined the case of flow in narrow, eccentric annuli (k + 1) with and without rotation of the annular core. These authors also reviewed previous work on this subject and verified their approach with experimental data. Dryden gives the solution for the limiting case of complete eccentricity or tangency. Piercy, et a l. published an early solution to the problem of narrow eccentric annular flow. The conclusions of Redberger and Charles2 and the experimental proof of Tao and Donovan6 both suggest that the region of large diameter ratios (k + 1) is of main interest and that the parallel planes approximation to the solution in this region is satisfactory. This method will now be extended to the laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in narrow eccentric annuli. THEORETICAL SOLUTION The geometrical aspects of the problem are illustrated in Fig. 1. To represent the non-Newtonian fluid the power-law model was selected. This model has many disadvantages which have been pointed out; nevertheless, its simplicity, its frequent and wide applicability justify its use in this work. Fredrickson and Bird8 and Savins9 have used it as a basis for a theoretical study of laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in concentric annuli.

THE current emphasis in preparing boron fibers by reduction of gaseous boron compounds on a resistively heated metal wire substrate has renewed interest in the borides of those metals which have relatively high melting points and are available as fine wires. A knowledge of the structures and properties of the borides, which are formed when boron diffuses into the metal core during boron deposition, can be of assistance in the understanding of the boron fiber formation process and the fiber properties. Many of these borides are well-known and their properties have been measured. However, when an unidentified boride is found in the core, it may be difficult to establish its composition because of the small amount of material available, the preferred orientation effects on the reflections in its X-ray pattern, and the possible overlap of X-ray reflections if several borides are present in the core. For example. the proper indexing of the X-ray pattern of WB4, which was formed in the tungsten substrate core during boron fiber formation, was accomplished only after small single crystals of this boride were grown and X-ray precession investigations were conducted.&apos; This note presents the results of a study of the phases formed in the core when tungsten, tantalum, and molybdenum metal wires were used as substrates in the boron fiber preparation process with particular emphasis on the identification and characterization of a higher boride of molybdenum analogous to WB,. Boron was deposited on resistively heated stationary 0.0012-in.-diam tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum wires at 1050°C for various times up to 60 sec using boron trichloride and hydrogen as the reactant gases. After 60 sec of boron deposition the fibers were approximately 0.006 in. in diam. Examination of photomicrographs of fiber cross sections showed that the boron had diffused nearly to the center of the tungsten and molybdenum cores in 15 and 30 sec, respectively, and only halfway to the center of the tantalum core in 60 sec. X-ray diffraction photographs of the fibers indicated that it was also after 15 and 30 sec deposition times that the tungsten and molybdenum metal reflections, respectively, had disappeared from the X-ray patterns of the fibers. The patterns of the boron fibers produced using tantalum wire as a substrate showed that amorphous boron, TaB2, and tantalum metal were present after a few seconds deposition time and remained even after deposition times of 60 sec. Until a deposition time of 15 sec was reached, the tungsten substrate fibers contained amorphous boron,273 6WB, W2B5, and WB4 as well as tungsten metal, while the molybdenum substrate fibers contained amorphous boron, MoBa, Mo2B5, and molybdenum metal for deposition times up to 30 sec. Just before the molybdenum metal pattern disappeared, a pattern similar to that of WB, appeared, suggesting that a phase, MOB,, isomorphous with WB,, was present in the fiber. This same pattern was obtained from the product formed by heating a mixture of molybdenum metal and excess boron powder in a boron nitride crucible at 1960°C in an argon atmosphere. As was the case with the WBn pattern, this pattern could best be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal unit cell rather than the tetragonal unit cell Chrktien and Helgorsky reported for ~0~4,~ see Table I. The unit cell parameters for MoB4 were calculated to be a, = 5.214A, co = 6.358A. Assuming the space group P63/mmc and positions5 2M01 in 2b and 2MoII in 2c found for tungsten in WB~,&apos; a logical structure for MOB, was determined using geometrical considerations to place the boron

THE over-all picture of safety in mining has been encouraging during the past few years, and in mining activities as a whole the trend in accident occurrence is downward. This is the more noteworthy when the type of labor used in mines during the war period is taken into consideration. The drafting of young mining employees into the armed services and the departure of others for work in other war industries took a heavy toll of young, husky, active men. Their places were taken in large part by older men who returned to the mines, or by inexperienced men with little if any knowledge of mining. Despite the lack of labor and especially of skilled labor, and the difficulty of obtaining new equipment as well as maintaining and replacing worn or broken equipment, and numerous other difficulties the mining industry not only reached and maintained maximum production but made the increase with little if any sacrifice of safety. PLANS for the World&apos;s Engineering Congress in Japan are rapidly taking shape. The Congress itself will be held in Tokyo in the week beginning Oct. 30, and will be followed by a second week of short excursions to points of interest, and this, in turn, by a two weeks&apos; excursion through the Inland Sea and to Manchuria. Aside from the time each may desire to spend in Japan, from 30 to 42 days, according to route, must be allowed for travel from New York to Tokyo and return, with correspondingly&apos; shorter time from intermediate points. During the course of an investigation into the drawability of automobile-body sheet steel, it became apparent that certain advantages would be possessed by a deep-drawing steel with a very low yield strength, but almost normal tensile strength, provided a reduction in yield strength could be accomplished without sacrifice of ductility and fine grain size. It would also be desirable to have this steel free from strainaging; that is, free from the tendency for the yield point to return after it had been eliminated by straining. It was known that wet hydrogen treatment acted to eliminate aging, but as carried out by other investigators, at relatively high temperatures, this treatment resulted in grain coarsening. It has been established by some of the experiments reported in this paper that all of these objectives can be accomplished by treatment in wet hydrogen at a low temperature, in the neighborhood of 720°C. The time of treatment is relatively short (about 3 hr. to completion with 20-gauge sheet) if the water content of the hydrogen atmosphere is made fairly high, say almost 30 per cent by volume. At this temperature, the grain size remains fine in the time required. After this treatment sheet reduced the usual amount by cold-rolling has a grain size of about A.S.T.M. No. 7. The yield point is completely eliminated, and the yield strength is reduced to a very low value, in the neighborhood of 15,000 lb. per sq. in. The stress-strain curve departs gradually from the straight-line elastic part after the fashion of nonferrous deep-drawing alloys. This elimination of the yield point is accompanied by a very low indentation hardness; for example, 32 Rockwell B or even lower. There is no aging as measured by increase in the yield strength upon aging at room temperature or for 3 hr. at 200°C., after stretching about 10 per cent in tension. Tensile strength is only slightly less than the box-annealed sheet, seldom dropping much below 40,000 lb. per sq. in. Elongation is practically unchanged, or increased slightly. The term yield point, as here used, refers to the phenomenon of heterogeneous deformation occurring at a substantially constant load, observed principally in annealed low-carbon steels. If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, suddenly falls, fluctuates slightly about some constant value for a time and then begins to rise again as deformation proceeds.
