THIS investigation was undertaken primarily to establish the relations existing between temperature and mechanical properties in molybdenum, nickel, and an aluminum-copper alloy. Molybdenum (m.p. 2500° C.) was chosen because it is partly similar to tungsten and partly similar to the common ductile metals. Also it is known to furnish, by proper treatment, a desirable material to use in studying relation of grain size and physical properties. The molybdenum used was of the quality that is drawn into wire 0.003 in. in diameter for use as filament supports in incandescent lamps; chemical analysis shows less than 0.1 per cent. of impurities. Nickel belongs to the same class as iron. Its melting point is 1450° C. and an allotropic change at about 370° C. results in a loss of magnetism above that temperature. This feature made nickel doubly valuable for the purposes of these tests. The nickel used was obtained from the Driver-Harris Co. as 0.090 in. (2.3-mm.) wire, annealed; analysis showed 99.8 per cent. nickel and 0.150 per cent. iron. Aluminum is one of the low melting-point metals. Some tensile tests at elevated temperatures have been reported by Bengough but the possibility of learning more with the low temperature and sensitive apparatus available recommended this metal. The samples marked Al are an aluminum-copper alloy; they contained 3 per cent. copper, 0.42 per cent. iron, and 0.21 per cent. silicon. The presence of the copper somewhat complicates the analysis of the results; but the action of copper in aluminum has been studied so that its influence might have been foretold, in part at least. The material and analyses were furnished by the Aluminum Castings Co. The nickel wire, which was deformed at 400° C., was drawn under a bath of molten lead and through a die, which also was immersed in the bath. DISCUSSION shiou-chuan sun (author's correction) - Too late for revision, the author realized that the data on stability of froth presented in this paper were not based on the same height of froth column. It is recommended herein that the stability of froth is better calculated by dividing the time elapsed until the froth disappeared by the volume (in cu cm per sq cm) or height of the froth column, and is expressed in sec per cm. The stability data in Tables I, II, and III of this paper were recalculated, in accordance with this recommendation, and the results are shown respectively in the accompanying Tables VII, VIII, and IX. Compared with Tables I, II, and III of the paper, the stability data of Tables VII, VIII, and IX are more reliable in disclosing the persistence of froth of various frothers having different frothabilities. For example, the conclusion given in the paper that the stability of froth is generally proportional to the volume of froth becomes invalid when the stability of froth is expressed in sec per cm, as shown in Tables VII, VIII, and IX. Table VII shows that both the stability and volume of froth increase with the addition of small amounts of n-hexyl alcohol, and that further additions of n-hexyl alcohol decrease the stability but increase the volume of froth. Table VIII indicates that the stability of different types of frothers is governed by their chemical composition and is difficult to predict from their frothability. Table IX shows that the stability of different frothers with similar nonpolar groups tends to increase with a decrease of the hydro- philic property of their polar groups, and consequently with the decrease of their solubilities. This is further substantiated by the fact that the stability of frothers, as listed in Table IX, is generally lowered by the solvent effect of absolute ethyl alcohol. Table IX shows also that the stability of froth tends to increase with the decrease of the volume of froth* provided the frothers used have similar nonpolar groups and dissimilar polar groups.

MANY engineers currently are working harder than usual, in part because of the demands being made upon them for increased production in the war effort, and in part because engineers are in short supply so that there is more to do for those who are available. In some instances the question has come up as to what additional payment, if any, should properly be made for overtime work, and to what extent is such payment legally permitted under the rules of the Salary Stabilization Board. Most engineers employed in an executive, administrative, or outside salesman capacity are not paid for overtime. They are paid for doing a job instead of for the hours they put in, and are free to do all the unpaid home work they feel they should do after dinner, as well as to do a bit of thinking and worrying during wakeful hours in bed. But engineers employed in a strictly professional capacity normally have standard office hours. Some employers pay for overtime and some don't. Their practice as it existed on Jan. 25, 1951 may be continued. In the absence of such practice at that time, the Salary Stabilization Board says that the engineer may now receive additional compensation up to his straight-time rate for an extended work week. No formal approval of the Board is required. "A professional engineer," in the mind of the Board, "is a person employed in a professional capacity, who, by reason of his special knowledge of the mathematical and physical sciences and the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, acquired by professional education and practical experience, is qualified to practice engineering." Inducted Engineers A letter from a young man just inducted into the service and fearful that his engineering training is not going to be utilized reached us last week from Fort Riley, Kan. The AIME, cooperating with the other Founder Societies, is doing what it can, through the Engineering Manpower Commission, to see that engineers are not being wasted in the military establishment. So we passed this young man's letter along to T. A. Marshall Jr., executive secretary of that Commission. Mr. Marshall tells us that the normal procedure now being followed by the Army in handling Selective Service inductees is to have them first complete 16 weeks of basic training before assignment to specialized categories. During that time they are classified. If one has an engineering degree he should be classified as scientific and engineering personnel at the end of the basic training period. He should then be transferred to a technical detachment and assigned an MOS (Military Occupational Specialties) reflecting his education. If a young man is looking for a commission, it might be added that the current policy in the Army is to transfer to OCS (Officer Candidate School) applicants for commissions in the infantry only. The local unit commander can give information on this point, based upon the aptitude shown in tests. In view of the current shortage of engineers, it is believed that a young man should seriously consider remaining in enlisted status unless he can obtain a commission in a branch of the service that can make full use of his technical skills. His work may thus be more to his liking even if his uniform is not. New York or Atlantic City? In which place is it preferable to hold the annual meeting of a professional society like the AIME-New York or Atlantic City? That is, a winter meeting. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has held its recent meetings at Atlantic City, with increasing attendance and satisfaction. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers chose Atlantic City for its recent December annual meeting. Only twice has the AIME ever met in this famous seashore resort: in 1898 and 1904. Chief advantages of going to Atlantic City over New York are that technical sessions are better attended, there being little else to do there in Winter; the cost to members is less, and hotel facilities are better adapted to a large meeting. As to cost, take a banquet, for instance. The Chalfonte-Haddon Hall, which caters especially to winter conventions, charges about $7 for a banquet dinner of standard quality. A similar dinner at the Statler in New York would cost about $8.50, and about $10.50 at the Waldorf-Astoria. (The charge for tickets is somewhat greater than this because of the cost of music, programs, flowers, and other incidentals.) Rooms, too, are somewhat less at Atlantic City, two in a room being accommodated for about $7 per day each, compared with $7 to $10 at a headquarters hotel in New York. On the other hand, AIME headquarters is put to some extra expense for staff travel, food and lodging, and members living in New York and environs are forced to pay a hotel bill. New York, of course, has more varied amusements to offer, plenty of big stores, and the glamour of a big city. The choice may be discussed at the forthcoming meeting in New York. In the meantime if any reader cares to express an opinion one way or the other we shall be glad to hear it. College Scholarships Most parents of children in the later stages of high school find it necessary to give some consideration to the cost of a college education. Although salaries have increased substantially it seems that the cost of the necessities of life, such as food, housing, and maintaining the family automobile, have gone up even more, so the problem of financing the children's education is as acute as ever. Many overlook the possibility of scholarships, or feel that only a student at or near the top of his class has a chance to get one. As a matter of fact, close to 150,000 scholarships and more than 15,000 fellowships, worth some $42,000,000, are available in 1200 American colleges and universities. Those who are interested should send 55¢ to the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. for a 248-page publication just issued by the U. S. Office of Education, entitled "Scholarships and Fellowships Available at Institutions of Higher Education."

Lieut. Louis J. Brunel, now in France, was commissioned on July 27, 1917, as Second Lieutenant in the Engineers Reserve Corps, assigned to the 7th U. S. Engineers, Dec. 10, 1917, and has been with the American E. F. since Mar. 26, 1918. He was assigned to the staff of the General commanding the 5th Field Artillery Brigade, as Engineer Officer, on Aug. 6, 1918. E. Ross Housholder writes that "the record for pontoon bridge building was broken Sept. 25, 1918, by Section A, Co. 4, 5th Engineer Officers' Training School, at Camp Humphreys, Va., of which I am a member. The time was 15 min. 11 3/5 seconds. We then proceeded to break the record for dismantling in 9 min. 57 1/5 seconds. The length of the bridge section was 200 ft. The post band was sent out to meet us, and we feel proud of this record. I have met quite a few A. I. M. E.

FLUORSPAR production is the most important industry in a compact area in southern Illinois and western Kentucky bordering the Ohio River. Producers' activities do not usually figure much in the mining news of the country, so that few know that the last year or so has been an unusually active one. Mine shipments more than doubled in 1939 compared with the poor year 1938. The average price changed but little, though it is now about one-sixth higher than at the beginning of last year. The outbreak of war in Europe a year ago lent an immediate stimulus to the industry, though only about 15 per cent of the domestic consumption is normally imported, thanks to a tariff of $8.40 per ton, equivalent to about 30 per cent ad valorem. Be- cause of the increased production and many expansions and improvements in the mines and plants, the period since the beginning of 1939 has been the most important one for the industry in the last 15 years.

The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristics of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economi-cally sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydro-carbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates .3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residua,4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessi-tates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufac-turing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core.

A photoguaplric method of measuring crack velocities has been applied to an examilzation of- the effect of hydrogen on the impact properties of zirconium. Results indicate that the crack in hydrided zirconit travels at about 26 m per sec whereas that in the uacuum -annealed is dependent on the speed of the hammer. RECENT work on the effect of hydrogen on zirconium reveals that when hydrided zirconium is tested in slow bending the crack producing failure can be unstable. The mode of fracture seems to involve the crack linking up broken hydrides by a ductile mechanism in the zirconium matrix.2" In order to compare the fracture of zirconium with that of other metals which show unstable crack propagation, notably steel, the rate of the crack spread must be known. As the methods previously used for measuring crack growth are either unsuitable for the present work5-'' or very costly," a simple technique has been devised in which the maximum crack velocity is derived from a series of crack position-time measurements. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental arrangement is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The flash unit12 was triggered when the Charpy hammer touched the specimen and the 6-psec flash of the lamp delayed by a preselected time interval in the range 100psec to 10 msec. The camera was left on open shutter during the test. From direct measurement on a calibrated photographic print, Fig. 2, the position of the crack and the specimen was found at a known time after impact and, from a series of such tests using an appropriate range of flash-delay times, the crack velocity was estimated. Preliminary experiments were carried out on mild steel above and below its transition temperature. Vacuum-annealed zirconium, and zirconium hydrided to 100 ppm H were then tested at 20" and 150°C. For comparison, Zr-2.6 pct Nb alloy (in the 0 + transformed /3 condition), vacuum-annealed or hydrided to 100 ppm H, was tested at 20 C. The chemical analyses of these materials are given in Table I. For the high-temperature tests a fine chromel-alumel thermocouple was spot-welded onto each specimen close to the notch. The test piece was heated up to 200°C to allow enough time for preparing the apparatus while the specimen cooled to the testing tem- perature. It was assumed that the specimen cooled uniformly. The accuracy of the flash-delay time was better than i2 pct i 5 psec. The crack length was taken as its maximum distance traveled normal to the length axis of the specimen. Errors in these measurements arise as a result of the uncertainty in the location of the crack tip and the difficulty in defining the exact position of the crack starting point. The latter was due to the bonding and large amounts of deformation at the hammer contact point, especially in the vacuum-annealed specimens tested at 150°C. The maximum error in the measurements was however estimated to be about 5 pct. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS From the trial experiments using mild steel above its transition temperature it can be seen from the plot of crack length against time after impact, Fig. 3. that a reasonable estimate of the maximum crack velocity at the surface of the specimen may be made. The end of the war in Europe and the Pacific failed to curb the upward trend of production in Venezuela,- which easily surpassed that of any previous year. The total production for 1945 amounted- to 323,369, 430 bbl., which was 26 per cent over the total for 1944, the previous peak in the history of the oil industry of the country. This increase was caused mainly by the greater demand for petroleum in the last stages of the war; the fact that the danger from enemy submarines had been overcome, which allowed all oil companies to use increased shipping facilities, and the fact that more materials were available for drilling operations. However, the materials supplied were by no means adequate and considerable credit is reflected on the Venezuelan petroleum industry for the increased production obtained by utilizing all available equipment to its fullest extent.

The ore deposit of the Iron King mine occurs in a group of steeply-dipping metamorphosed eugeosynclinal volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age. Within this sequence, the ore deposit lies at the contact of a unit made up of rhyolitic tuff and interbedded andesite and a structurally underlying series consisting of andesitic tuffs, minor rhyolitic tuffs, and argillaceous sediments. Field evidence suggests that these rocks have been overturned. The ore deposit is made up of a series of overlapping, conformable or bodies consisting of massive pyrite and associated lenses of massive quartz. These contain recoverable amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. A parallel zone of copper mineralization occurs within the hanging-wall rocks. The deposit is considered to belong to a large and important group characterized by mineralogical composition and the lithology and structural type of the host rocks. Evidence regarding the origin of the deposit is reviewed, and it is concluded that the ore bodies were formed through the agency of volcanic hot springs on, or near, a submarine surface of deposition

AT Williams College, in the quaint old New England town where people still go to the post office for their mail, an interesting institution has come into being as one of the aftermaths of the peace conference at Paris in 1919. The war taught the world many things about economics although much remains to be learned and more to be appreciated. B. M. Baruch, H. A. Garfield, president of Williams, and others who took part in the conference at Paris or in preparation for it, feeling that benefits would accrue from informal friendly discussion of the problems that lead to political differences between peoples, called together a summer conference in 1920. This has now become an annual affair and is coming to be looked upon as an important center for developing and stimulating public opinion. Membership in the Institute is by invitation and the lists change to correspond with the particular subjects taken up. Each year a number of distinguished foreign public men are invited to be the guests of the Institute and to meet men and women from various parts of the United States interested in their special subjects. Round tables, general conferences, and public lectures are the means employed to bring out discussion. The first are organized by groups, each including usually 25 to 40 people interested in a special subject and meeting three times a week for informal discussion. Teachers, writers, economists, engineers, business men, indeed men of all vocations and many shades of opinion, are brought together. Once a week each round table presents in general conference with the members of all other groups the more general conclusions reached in its own decisions. Afternoon and evening lectures are given by the foreign guests and these are open to the public. The lectures and the general conferences are reported widely in the press but the proceedings as a whole are not printed, no resolutions are passed, and no action is taken or contemplated. The whole plan is to furnish a forum for free discussion in hopes that the difficulties of various groups and peoples may be taken up sympathetically and good understanding promoted. There is no creed, doctrine or dogma to which the Institute is committed and widely different views are currently presented. The constant effort is to bring out points of view and the reasons for them rather than to build up convincing arguments favourable to a specific action

The Leadville district, on the west flank of the Mosquito Range in central Colorado, has produced silver, zinc, lead, gold, and minor metals valued at $512,000,000. The ore deposits are in a sequence of dolomites and quartzites, Cambrian through Mississippian in age and about 500 feet thick, which is extensively intruded by porphyry sills, dikes, and plugs of Tertiary age. The sedimentary rocks and sills dip about 15°E and are broken by many faults, which are predominantly of nearnorth trend and downthrown to the west. The ore deposits are principally blanket or manto replacement deposits, but in the eastern part of the district many veins occur also. The replacement deposits are largely confined to three dolomite units in the stratigraphic sequence. Of these, the uppermost or Leadville Dolomite is the most productive. Most ore bodies are on the underside of porphyry sills and, particularly, beneath sills that occupy unconformities. Many replacement bodies have vein roots or branch from veins. The veins occupy faults and are productive mainly in the section of quartzites and dolomites and included sills. The primary ores consist principally of pyrite, marmatitic sphalerite, and galena but locally contain chalcopyrite, silver minerals, bismuth minerals, and gold. Principal gangue minerals are manganosiderite and jasperoid. The ore deposits have a crude zonal pattern centered around an intrusive center at Breece Hill, which evidently influenced ore deposition thermally. The ore deposits were oxidized to depths of several hundred feet in Miocene time. Bonanza ores mined in the early days were characterized by cerussite, cerargyrite, and embolite. Later, zinc carbonate ores were identified and mined on a large scale. The Leadville district is a complexly faulted and intruded area at the intersection of major fault systems trending N20°W and N15°E in the Mosquito Range. The intensely fractured area evidently localized igneous intrusion and subsequent mineralization. Ore solutions rose on many of the faults in the area, presumably from the same source as the porphyry magmas. Movement on these faults continued into the Pleistocene, displacing ore bodies, oxidation zones, Pliocene sediments, and glacial deposits.

The energy crisis and the resurgence of mining activities highlighted 1972-73. Added to the impetus for more effective materials handling systems has been the continued upward trend of inflation and labor costs. The need for addressing the fundamentals has led to the trend toward an overall systems approach to materials handling problems.1 The decision to move forward with large mining ventures such as the $150 million Hibbing taconite comple2 and the immense Carajas iron project must base themselves on indepth studies of a host of factors viewed in the context of an integral mine-transport-market system. What's important is that each ton of pellet or ore must be an economical commodity at the end users' furnace. The project can still be viaable even if certain components in the entire network appear to be individually costly.

UNDER the auspices of the Geophysical Committee of Michigan College of Mining and Technology, an investigation was made in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to obtain geophysical data" related to the regional subsurface geology in the area covered by Paleozoic sediments. The area surveyed includes that portion of the Upper Peninsula which lies between R18W to R26W and T41N and T49N, covering approximately 1300 square miles. On the index map, Fig. 1, it is represented by the cross-hatched zone west of Munising. Four of the five sites of detailed investigation are indicated by the letters A, B, C, and D. A detailed gravity and magnetic survey had previously been conducted by J. G. Wilsonz near Perkins, 8 miles north of Rapid River, on a local anomalous area. Results of his work, which showed a large positive magnetic anomaly associated with a gravity anomaly, aroused interest in the possible economic significance of the formations underlying the Paleozoic sediments in this part of the Upper Peninsula. Early in the 1900's the Michigan Geological Survey, as well as many private companies, had done a considerable amount of dip needle work near the southwest corner of the area discussed in this paper. Most of the information available to the writer was obtained from indicated magnetic anomalies on the geological map of the northern peninsula of Michigan. Results of the geophysical activities of mining companies in the vicinity of the Marquette range and Gwinn district were unavailable to the author. Physiography and Geography: The region under consideration has low to moderate relief. About half the area is comprised of swampy lowlands, and because of the swamps and forests much of the land is almost inaccessible. The major drainage system is dendritic, with streams flowing into Lake Michigan on the south and Lake Superior on the north. The general geology, shown in Fig. 2, indicates an overlay of Paleozoic sediments on pre-Cambrian formations along a line running approximately south from Marquette (not shown on the geological map). Actual contact between pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic sediments is not known because most of the area is covered with glacial till, and outcrops are very scarce. Exposures of the Paleozoic sediments show that these beds in the northern areas dip gently under Lake Superior and that in the southern areas they 'dip gently to the southeast. Outcroppings of the pre-Cambrian formations occur primarily to the west of the surveyed area except in the northwest corner where the Laurentian series outcrop as far east as the Gwinn district and also in T46N, R24W. Instrumentation: Gravity measurements were made with the Worden portable gravity meter. Since this was chiefly a reconnaissance regional survey, both the large and small dials were used. The instrument used had a constant of 0.0035 milligals per scale division, a working range of about 25 milligals.

We have had occasion to produce wire of Np-237 in small diameters for use in some chemical experiments. Since the mechanical metallurgy of neptunium has not been investigated extensively, it seems desirable to report our successful extrusion technique. Because of the neptunium activity and its attendant health hazard the experimental work was done in glove boxes and related equipment also used for Pu-239. At room temperature a phase neptunium' is a hard (Dph -355) orthorhombic metal of high density (p = 20.45 g per cu cm). a neptunium transforms2 to tetragonal ß neptunium at about 280°C and this in turn transforms to bcc y neptunium at about 577°C. The y phase melts at about 637°C. A temperature of 340° to 345°C was selected for the extrusion, this temperature being a compromise be- tween a possible advantage of working with the presumably more plastic cubic y phase above 577°C and the risk of having the neptunium react with the alloy steel die to form the low-melting Fe-Np eutectic. A 0.75-in.-long, 0.26-in.-diameter ingot of good-purity* Np-237 was extruded by the direct *C = 230 ppm, Pu = 200 ppm, thirty-five metallic elements below limit of detection by spectrographic methods. process through flat-face orifices to form several sizes of wire ranging from 0.010 to 0.030 in. in diameter. Molybdenum disulfide was used as the die lubricant. The extrusion was done in a vacuum of about 10-4 torr to reduce reaction of the neptunium with atmospheric gases. British workers3 at Harwell have extruded neptunium under similar conditions. The force required to extrude 0.010-in.-diameter wire at the rate of 4 in. per min was 6000 lb, as measured with an electrical load cell. Wire 0.020 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4700 lb at a rate of 2 in. per min, and wire 0.030 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4000 lb at a rate of 1.3 in. per min.
