A mathematical model has been developed for intense pneumatic smelting processes, such as the Sirosmelt group of processes, to assist in establishing optimum process conditions and to permit operator training. The model first solicits input operating conditions from disk files and from the operator. During operation, the feed, fuel, and air (or oxygen) rates are automatically adjusted to maintain the desired process targets. Alternatively, these parameters, as with all other inputs, may be manually controlled by the operator. Selected process parameters are displayed to the terminal in a regularly updated diagram of the process,. Outputs of detailed information including heat and mass balances are available for immediate inspection or for use by ancillary plotting packages. Development of a robust free energy minimization routine has led to a flexible and time efficent model capable of handling a range of pyrometallurical systems. Modelling of tin smelting, lead smelting, copper smelting, matte fuming, and pneumatic steel-making has been sucessfully carried out. Typical outputs from the model are given and discussed in terms of their internal consistency and relationship to the operation of the relevant Sirosmelt process. `

It is now recognised that rotary sample division is by far the best laboratory tool for extracting subsamples from a lot of material. In terms of sampling theory, rotary division, by virtue of the fact that it can extract many increments from the lot during the division process, radically reduces the variance due to distributional heterogeneity in the sample being divided. There are a number of occasions in sample preparation when it is necessary to extract a subsample of a target mass. To do this with rotary dividers taking a fixed fraction of the starting mass is a tedious task. In response to this problem, a variable split sample divider has been designed and built for the mineral industry. This paper discusses the utility of the device and presents test data showing that the machine is capable of making accurate mass split while overcoming segregation in the material being divided.

Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited has mining rights to four deposits of halloysite, which are located about 203 km north of Auckland, New Zealand. These primary deposits were formed by the hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite domes. Halloysite clay is currently being mined from two of these deposits and then processed for export markets. From humble beginnings in the mid 1950s, the Northland halloysite was processed initially for paper filler markets and then for higher value tableware and technical ceramic niche export markets. The paper will briefly cover the geology and processing of halloysite and then examine the history of New Zealand China Clays Limited, now Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited and then look to its future as part of global industrial minerals company, Imerys.

Most internationally traded iron ore resources are derived from multiple mine sites, transported to a port facility where they are blended and possibly further processed prior to shipping. Provided the proportion of contributions varies over a number of shipments an estimate can be made of the bias introduced by mine site sampling, analysis and materials handling systems, using zero-intercept multiple linear regression. Further regression applied to the residuals allows the error variances for the source mines to be estimated. Various sampling strategies are used by the industry. All have shipment-loading sampling on which payment or at least provisional payment is based. In most cases sampling prestockpile is used at mine sites to verify estimated production grades. Train grades are estimated from mine stockpile grades and in some cases train grades are verified by port input sampling. The methodology used is presented in this paper. Simulated data have been used and do not reflect the actual performance of any operator. The merits of the various systems and the implementation and potential limitations of our method are discussed more fully in a companion paper (Ziegelaar and Everett, 2010).

Since 1865 when Congress moved to create a Federal Mining Bureau, successive legislations have given rise to the current '!Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, 1969. Coal beds from 22 feet to 20 feet thick are mined under covers from 50 to 2800 feet with full and partial pillar recovery equally popular and accounting for a total of 54% of the mines. Pillar recovery and roof support practices vary, and each operator must submit an overall roof control plan (within specific guidelines) for approval before undertaking any development. The guidelines relate to dimensions of openings, details of support, sequence of extraction, limits of extraction and caving details. Experienced and professional staff of M.E.S.A. provide roof control plans and make inspections and grant-approvals of principles of support and minimum support in pillar extraction, with provision for modifications with time. Guidance is given with training programmes and standards of supervision. All of these aspects are approached in the spirit of the Congress declaration that the first priority and concern must be the health and safety of the miner.

Mining and metallurgy are more capital intensive than all other industry in Australia. Capital demands are met by domestic and foreign sources of finance for whom the major constraints are the supply of funds and factors of risk and uncertainty. in both mineral development and institutional financing policies, specific options are available to administrators which would allow mining to benefit from a more reliable supply of capital. The strength of major partners involved and overseas participation are important aspects of financing mineral developments. Future changes in financing for the mineral industry are considered most likely in variable interest rate funding, in the leasing of major plant items, and in the development of flexible techniques to ease the burden of infrastructure costs. In a consultancy sense, financiers are available to mining to assist with and to advise on optimal develop- ment of mineral industry projects.

The hazard posed by underground mine fires is illustrated in the first part of this paper by means of a review of experiences in four mining countries over the last three decades. This brief review indicates that while much progress has been made generally in preventing fires and providing means of protection to miners, the possibility of disasters occurring must continue to be regarded as very real. Based upon recent investigations by the South African mining industry, an integrated strategy for providing protection to personnel in the event of a fire is outlined in the second part of the paper. The main, complementary, elements in this strategy are the prevention of ignitions, the limitation of fires, provision of protection systems and equipment, training for emergencies, and effective implementation of safety measures. Some comments are made on important aspects of these elements and on possible further developments.

The search for economic mineral deposits is becoming more difficult as exploration goes deeper in the established mining camps and spread out to the surrounding covered areas, which may have an `overburden' some hundreds of metres thick. Geophysics is finding an ever increasing role in such exploration. When the target is zinc, the task often becomes even more difficult since sphalerite, the most commonly mined mineral, is non-magnetic, resistive, and relatively light compared to other sulphides. Fortunately, sphalerite commonly occurs in association with other sulphides, which are magnetic and/or conductive and/or heavy, thus most zinc-rich orebodies have at least one contrasting physical property to aid exploration. This paper presents the physical properties of sphalerite and other potentially important zinc minerals. Results of petrophysical measurements of samples from various zinc-rich ores are presented together with examples of geophysical surveys over a number of zinc deposits. The results show that the physical properties are not merely dependent upon the properties of the orebodies' constituent minerals. For example, the small (0.4 Mt) and low-grade (five per cent Zn + three per cent Pb + two per cent other sulphides) Flying Doctor deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales (NSW) is much more conductive than the large (3+ Mt) and high grade (14 per cent Zn + five per cent Pb) Cadjebut deposit in Western Australia (WA). Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

A brief description of viscosity measuring devices used in Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants is given, including a new On-line viscometer system. The various factors which affect suspension viscosity are identified. The effect of temperature variation on viscosity and viscosity measurement is examined in detail. Practical problems in using a modified Stormer viscometer for laboratory testwork are noted. Likely problems of continuous viscosity measurements are also discussed.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. This paper presents an overview of the researches carried out in our laboratory on the application of plasma in recovery of alloy elements from waste slags and the treatment of lean ores, which are examples of advanced materials processing. After briefly reviewing the early work on the reduction of nickel, chromium, manganese, vanadium and titanium oxides, and a short investigation of the reduction of titanium oxide from the slag resulting from the blast furnace smelting of a titanomagnetite ore, the paper concentrates on the more recent studies on the reduction of an Australian scheelite. In some of these experiments, aluminium was used in addition to carbon as a reductant, in virtually all cases complete reduction was achieved within a relatively few minutes even with carbon alone during plasma processing. It therefore appears that this technique provides a possible processing route to facilitate the recovery of valuable alloying elements from non-traditional sources, or to permit process step elimination.

WHEN reading reports on reefs and lodes, one often comes across the statements "short shoot," "narrow shoot," "wide shoot," & c.From a number of reports in the writer's possession, some by members of the Geological survey, it is plain that the words "short," "narrow," "wide," "long;" &c., are used somewhat carelessly.In one official report on a certain field, for instance, the reefs are described as having "short, rich shoots"; another report on the same field states that "the reefs were characterized by narrow shoots, rich at the surface." Again, Charters Towers is described as having "wide shoots"; another writer says they are "long shoots. "The writer has read again of "short shoots which went down like pipes," and of "narrow shoots of limited extent." No doubt one can make out what is really meant, but the language is mixed. It is apparent that "narrow" is meaning the same as "short," and that the shoot has not much length in a horizontal direction. Nothing is said about the thickness or width of 'said shoot, or its depth. The "wide" shoot is evidently a "long" one; its thickness 01' width and depth is not specified. When we consider these terms, it is seen that only a few words are needed, and that these few should (as they do) have a definite meaning. In the course of his mining experience, the writer has seen shoots of almost all sizes, and some have been very long (in horizontal measurement), and have been followed down for great depths, these shoots being the best type-Charters Towers, Walhalla, &c., are examples.

In the climate planning of mines and tunnelling with anticipated poor climatic conditions, and especially in case of longer working shifts, the main question is whether it can be reliably prevented that certain climatic limits laid down be exceeded. Working at high temperature and/or humidity can lead to reduced human working energy û a very important economic aspect û and to a risky lack of concentration on the part of the miners or to heat collapse and extremely dangerous heat stroke. With the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT) climate prediction programs, both the dry and the extremely significant humid heat transfer can be calculated. This is due to the high planning reliability involved. With the help of these climate prediction programs it is already possible to determine the anticipated climatic values for the operation phase as early as the planning stage of new ore or coal fields or of tunnel construction projects and to design the optimum air cooling system for every underground project with due regard to technical and economic aspects.

Patterns of successful metallic mineral discoveries in Australia are analysed for the last three decades. A trend towards more discoveries of poorly expressed and blind ore- bodies is evident and can be expected to continue. Discoveries using traditional and conceptual geological techniques have proportionally declined but are expected to continue at a significant level for a decade or so. Improvements in the quality and numbers of geological exploration models and in the quality of available basic geoscience data have aided successful discovery in recent years. Although some orebodies for the Year 2001 have already been found maintenance of a strong mineral inventory demands that more and better geological models are applied. Empirical models need to be improved by critical multi- disciplinary integrated studies of mineral occurrence at all scales. New models can and will be developed by various means. If application of these models is made with all the innovation, initiative and unorthodoxy that can be mustered then new discoveries will result. Greater attention to the surface expression of orebodies will also lead to new discoveries. Review and follow-up of old data in the light of new concepts will provide yet another discovery route.

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method preparation are illustrated. The mean percent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15%. Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia atomic absorption spectroscopy and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made. This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98% confidence are +30% and +15% respectively. The fire assay fusion atomic absorption spectroscopy method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia method.

The South Middleback Ranges (SMR) operation involves the develop- ment of iron ore resources at the Iron Duke mine in the South Middle- back Ranges to replace the Iron Baron mine whose reserves are nearing depletion. The Iron Duke mine will be developed by contract to the stage where it can continue operation at full production when Iron Baron is closed. As part of the mine planning of the operation a GPSS computer simulation model was written to determine equipment requirements. The model simulated the operation of the mine with trucks transporting ore and waste to the appropriate destinations and producing a blended product in the stockpiles. A loader and two trucks would transport ore from the stockpiles to the crusher for one shift per day. The simulation shut the operation down at crib, morning tea, shift change and weekends, and also on the third shift each day. It also modelled operating delays. The results gave equipment operating hours and total output of each material type. The model was modified to produce different outputs from the mine and could be used to determine the most productive shift arrangement.

Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

A review of the literature indicated that several studies have been reported on the dissolution of gold using iodide/iodine, bromide/bromine leaching systems. Although the reagent costs are much cheaper for chloride/chlorine (or hypochlorite) this system has not been fully evaluated. This study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental chemistry of the chloride/hypochlorite leaching system. The CHEMIX program was used to model the stability of various gold species existing in the solution. The gold dissolution rate at different conditions was determined using gold strips immersed in various mixtures of chloride/hypochlorite. Leaching experiments were conducted to test the extraction of gold from various ores (oxidised and copper-gold ores), showing a promising prospect for this technique in various applications.

Organic complexing agents have received special attention over the past few decades in the search for reagents for improved flotation separation of minerals, especially non-sulphides. The majority of such reagents that have been proposed over the past few decades have remained largely a laboratory curiosity, except perhaps alkyl hydroxamates, because their selection is seldom based on commercial viability. In this regard, the choice of complexing agents such as oximes may be more realistic because of their widespread use in solvent extraction of copper. Our earlier studies have confirmed that they are also effective as collectors for copper oxide minerals, including chrysocolla which is the most difficult copper mineral to beneficiate. The flotation behaviour of chrysocolla for several structurally-related hydroxyoximes were studied as a function of pH and oxime concentration and the role of structural features examined. The structural changes studied included substitutions in both chelating and non-chelating parts of the molecule. The results indicated that, contrary to expectations, many of the structural changes in the basic molecule, salicylaldoxime, do not have a positive effect on collector efficiency. The reduction in collector efficiency is rationalised on the basis of possible steric factors affecting complexation and packing of the collector species on the mineral surface as well as effects due to changes in electron density brought about by substituents. Introduction of alkyl substituents on the oximic carbon of salicylaldoxime yielded the highest collector efficiency.
