The Agnew Nickel Mine has a short his-tory of mining activities. However it has experienced a large variety of ground support problems. These problems relate to geological, hydrological, geomechanical, structural and mining techniques. The majority of the prob-lems occur in other underground mines. How-ever the large serpentinite hosted ore body which contains over 80% of the ore has prob-lems rarely encountered in other mines. Sol-utions to the problems are only being gained by understanding the factors creating them.

The intention of this paper is to give a review of the present status of lignite mining in the so-called Gulf States in the United States of America, namely Texas, Arkansas, Mis- sissippi and Louisiana. The situation in these states is similar to the situation in Australia in that "Strip Mining - 45 m and Beyond" repre- sents the main technical problem to be over- come in the near future. The solution lies in the application of the bucket wheel excavator.

The careful selection of plant species is of paramount importance to the success of any attempts to re- vegetate these sites. A method is proposed for the analysis of tin in cassiterite ores. Tin is volatilised by heating with ammonium iodide. The tin iodide so formed is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the concentration is measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy using an air-hydrogen flame.It is considered that a more efficient extraction of tin and faster reproducible results are obtained than by any other known method.

The Electricity Commission of New South Wales operates three power stations located on Lake Macquarie and Lake Munmorah. Coal for these power stations is supplied by three collieries operated by the Electricity Commission, three operated by the State Mines Control Authorityrand one privately owned. Most of the coal used in these power stations is won from the Great Northern seam which lies at depths of up to 220 ft at Awaba and at depths of the order of 600 ft at the remaining mines on the southern end of the field.

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.

Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.

Surface geological observations are predominantly two-dimensional but can be expanded into three dimensions using geophysical techniques. These techniques have proved succ- essful in the past and will be utilised more frequently in future mineral exploration. Geophysical training establishments must recog- nize future requirements and teach geophysics as part of a broad earth science course as well as a specialised geophysical course. Central- isation of teaching skills, the use of high- technology in the classroom, and greater interaction between academic and industry staff are recommended as a means of ensuring a vibrant geophysical training base in Australia, for the geophysicist of the future.

Porphyry Cu-Mo (Au) deposits of southern and western China are localised in ancient arc environments and continental-collision orogenic belts. Despite the contrasting tectonic setting, the known deposit geology and geochemistry appears identical in both. As such, the application of existing ore deposit models to atypical collisional settings suggests that significant potential exists for future discovery of significant porphyry deposits throughout the accreted cratonic blocks of Asia. This presentation opens with a definition of technology and how it is implemented. The expenditure and progress on R&D in the mining industry is then investigated and found to be difficult to quantify. The needs and interests of that industry including contribution to this Congress are examined and it is concluded that short-term rather than long-term goals seem to be prevalent. The presentation concludes with the opinion that the answer to the question in the title is both affirmative and negative but overall there is a need for the mining industry to become more innovative.

The thermodynamically-based pyrometallurgical simulation software STEPSOL (Version 3.0) provides for the modelling of activities using the Interaction Parameter Model, the Regular Solution Model, the Sub-Regular Three Suffix Margules Model, the Sub-Regular Four Suffix Margules Model and various simpler polynomial models. These are briefly reviewed, along with the major sources of data available in the literature, and the implementation of the models in the program.

The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.

In China, the State-run mines are currently practising an information card management system, to collect data about mine production and safety condition. Since large volumes of data will be obtained every day, efficiently and effectively processing data and sorting out valuable information will take enormous resources of manpower, if by hand. Therefore, an intelligent database system with easy data inputting was developed to assist information processors in data classifying, filing and retrieving. For analyzing and improving production performances, reliability models and production functions were embodied. The system was implemented on AST-286 in DBASE M. Preliminary applications have proved effective and successful.

The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

The method of evaluation of the approximate temperature of arising spontaneous fire centre and time of coal self-ignition is presented in this paper. The method uses BystronÆs (1997) model of coal self-heating and measurement of carbon monoxide concentration in the mine air outside the fire centre. Knowledge of the spontaneous fire centre temperature and time of fire beginning allows for more accurate analysis of the fire hazard in the coal mine and allows for adequate time to undertake special fire prevention actions. The method is illustrated by an example from Polish mining practice.
