The determinants of human behaviour are numerous and complex. Many scientific disci- plines focus on various processes which play some part in shaping the actions of individ- uals and groups. Behavioural science attempts to synthesise data produced by these investigations in an attempt to formulate principles by which people's thoughts, feelings and actions may be described, diagnosed, predicted and changed. While no comprehensive account of people and their reactions can be attempted in a brief paper a review of six principles does provide a framework within which managers can establish reliable knowledge applicable to all their subordinates and to themselves. This information may be used to arrange organizational environments and management practices which enable people to discover, release and increase their best intellectual, emotional and motivational capacities.

Scrutiny of the whole explosives industry has increased as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 and the bombings in Indonesia, including the Bali bombings last year. This has been highlighted in specific press releases from governing bodies, like the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources û Western Australia, on the necessity of being in compliance with regulations for storage of explosives. As a result, audits by inspectors to assess compliance are to be expected. In a proactive move, DynoConsult has assisted several customers through benchmarking current practices, in order to identify any areas of non-compliance to the statutory requirements for explosive storage and security. This paper discusses the outcomes of supplier discussions and customer audits and highlights the implications for the industry.

In both exploration and mining, the laboratory is often seen as a cost rather than a profit centre. The aim in most mining companies is to increase profits by reducing costs, so the budget for the laboratory is under constant pressure.There is another option; to see the laboratory as the brain of the operation. By lifting the status of the laboratory and treating it as a profit centre, mine costs may be reduced in other ways, e.g. reduction in milling costs. This change of status will require investing more capital in better equipment, more training for employees and more employees to carry out project research.There are many examples of major costs being incurred because of inadequate laboratory work. Conversely, by spending more money on laboratories and their activities, overall costs can be reduced or profits enhanced.

Block models generated with all linear interpolation algorithms contain inherent smoothing that typically results in an underestimation of grades and overestimation of tonnes in resource estimates. For mineral deposits that are anticipated to be exploited by underground mining methods excessive smoothing may result in materially misleading estimates of Ore Reserves. To account for smoothing in the open pit mining environment recoverable reserve techniques such as indicator kriging and uniform conditioning are employed to provide non-spatially located proportions of the large blocks above the cut-off grade. These models are not suitable for underground mine planning where the actual location of material above cut-off is required to design its extraction. To correct for excessive smoothing it is proposed to modify the ordinary kriged block estimates a posteriori using an affine correction with a local variance adjustment factor. The proposed methodology is demonstrated for a base metal deposit during a feasibility study.

The paper examines the current state of equipment and circuit design, with reference to Australian practice. Following a review of the changes in milling applications over the last 15 years, developments in mill design are examined. Current issues include trunnion versus shell support; drive type and economic analysis for comparison of the various systems; the efficiency of the mill discharge system for slurry and pebble removal, and lining configuration. Peripheral problem areas such as pebble crushing and classification are briefly examined. Circuit design issues are reviewed. The decision to modify the traditional primary crushed feed is examined with reference to recent and proposed installations. A retrospective look at fully autogenous installations and their successes is presented, and current views on increasing throughput are assessed. Finally, future developments are anticipated in mill design and control, and competing processes are identified.

On the top of page 10 appears the following statement;- "By viewing the box at adepression angle of 45°, all the dimensions are disclosed and the box may be projected on isometric co-ordinates" and lower down on the same page:- "An isometric plan, being virtually a projection on a plane inclined at 45°, the nearer the dip approaches this figure so is the outline of the stoping more truly shown." Those statements embody an inaccuracy which would be misleading were an isometric plan to be constructed to suit a special case, ie the case of a mine whose lode dipped at 45°, or approximately 45° and it would be found that in such a plan the outline of the stoping would not be truly shown. The occurrence is recorded of an indurated kaolinite claystone associated with red-beds in the Burralow Formation of the Narrabeen Group near Putty toward the north-west of the Sydney Basin. The claystone is similar in composition and structure to the Garie Member which immediately overlies the kaolinite-rich "chocolate shales" of the Bald Hill Claystone in the sofrthern part of the basin. Unlike the Garie Member however, the Putty claystone is lenticular and the associated red-beds contain abundant quartz and illite in addition to kaolinite.The source of the Putty claystone is not known. Possibly it is an extension of the Garie Member to the northwest or alternatively, it may represent fine outwash of detritus that produced the coarse-grained kaolinite claystones in the Triassic succession of the Merrygoen-Binnaway area. Although the material is suitable for the manufacture of aluminous refractories the limited size of the deposit precludes its commercial exploitation.

A study has been made of the geochemistry of the Ronneburg mine district as input to the overall management strategy for the rehabilitation of the mine site. The study drew on the geological data and information store developed over the 40 years of mineral exploration and mining at Ronneburg, and on chemical data from the literature which described the chemical processes of weathering, oxidation, dissolution and precipitation of minerals. The geochemical processes were divided into three groups based on their rate of reaction. Fast processes were assumed to proceed to equilibrium and were modelled using equilibrium chemistry equations; slow processes were assumed to be proceeding at a quasi-steady state rate and were modelled using chemical rate equations; very slow processes were assumed to have no role in describing the geochemistry for rehabilitation purposes.

Present practice of lead-zinc flotation at North Broken Hill Limited is described and factors influencing plant objectives and performance discussed. Mineralogical examination of final flot- ation products showed mineral liberation to be 94T complete and size by size metal recovery tables indicated a need for finer grinding to improve lead and silver recovery, but coarser grinding to improve zinc recovery. A steady grinding circuit, at constant ball mill power and cyclone overflow pulp density, is found desirable for satisfactory flotation circuit operation because instabil- ity in the grinding circuit inevitably leads to flotation instability and as a consequence less than optimal flotation operation. Remov- al of the variable lead flotation middling product from the grinding circuit decreased grinding instability.

Extractive metallurgy in the mining industry in Western Australia has diversified and increased in the last 11 years. Before 1980, the industry mainly produced alumina, nickel, mineral sands and iron ore, with the gold industry restricted to five operating plants using Merrill-Crowe technology. In 1981 Carbon-in-pulp (C]P) plants were commissioned at Kambalda, Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra.Currently, the gold industry has some seventy CIP plants in operation, production of synthetic rutile has increased tenfold to 500 000 tpa, alumina production has doubled and production of copper, lead and zinc concentrates has begun. Other extractive metallurgy plants recover tin, niobium and tantalum, silicon, titanium dioxide and zirconia. Current proposals include vanadium, steel and rare earths.

The report by Baker (1958, p. 27) of krennerite in contact with gold in a specimen from the 2500 ft level, Phantom South lode, Great Boulder mine, Kalgoorlie, led the writer to look into this further, since Cabri (1965) reported that the assemblage krennerite-gold was unstable between 238° and 356° C, and possibly down to room temperature.Dr. G. Baker very generously provided the writer with two chips from the same rock specimen (No. 14 as labelled from the mine) in which the krennerite gold assemblage was reported to occur. These were examined by polished section and x-ray diffraction techniques and returned to the classified collection of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of CSIRO.One specimen, showing visible gold, was examined optically with a binocular microscope and telluride material was twice removed from contact with the gold for x-ray diffraction. Independent assessments of existing and projected mining operations are often required in the exchange of assets and for raising capital, requirements which are particularly prevalent where there are new mining fields, a characteristic of the Pacific Rim area. Such audits and appraisals typically consist of a geological evaluation of the ore deposits; estimates of mineral inventories and mineable reserves; assessment of mine plans and costs; assessment of ore processing methods, recoveries, and costs; assessment of infrastructure and G&A (general and administrative) requirements and costs; assessment of environmental, permitting and reclamation requirements and costs; and, finally, economic evaluation based on various discount rates and metal prices. Audits provide a challenging task for consulting engineering companies, but one well worth the effort for mine developers and those connected with financing of the mining industry.

Limited recourse financing techniques reduce the financial exposure of equity holders to major mining projects by transfering some of the risks to the banks which provide loan funds for project development. This can only be achieved by a clear understanding of the principles involved. Engineering and management decisions on how the resource is to be developed and extracted must be made in the light of lender's requirements. The structure of sales contracts, joint venture agreements and many other documents can be important in limited recourse financing. If projections show that the debt can be repaid from project cash flow, loan agreements and other arrangements can restrict lenders ability to look to the equity holders for repayment of project loans.

Seafloor massive sulfide deposits contain bonanza grades of gold, silver, copper and zinc metals. The deposits are often found at depths of one kilometre or more. They are characterised by active chimneys or smokers venting fluids at over 300¦C, with extremely low pH values. Mining of these deposits presents risks for both industry and governments at orders of magnitude higher than terrestrial mining This paper briefly discusses some of the core risks concerning the development of SMS mining including: technical, economic, environmental, legal, social, and research and development. Until and unless these risks are eliminated or minimised, the embryonic deep sea mining industry will remain just that, and these deposits will remain a fascinating, unexploited geological curiosity.

Construction of the Ranger uranium project located 230 kiss east of Darwin in the Northern Territory commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was $407 million, made up of $125 million in cash to the Federal Govern- ment and the issue of 125 million $1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of $16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd (EZ).

An increase in the silver to gold ratio with increase in depth in the main ore shoot of the Crown-Crescent lode in the Emperor gold mine, Fiji, was found to be due mainly to vertical zoning of gold-silver tellurides. The zoning resulted from a two-stage sequence of ore mineralization.The application of some recent studies of the synthetic Au-Ag-Te system to natural gold-silver telluride assemblages is discussed.

Geological structure at PT Karimun Granite Quarry, in Karimun Island û Indonesia, has three primary joint sets that cross between them. These primary joint sets are the principal factor influencing the geotechnical safety of this quarry. In order to get stable geometry of the quarry in terms of height, width, and slope for single and overall bench, we need an appropriate stability analysis method to prevent failure and maintain stability. The Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is used for this rock mass system. The geometries resulting from this analysis have been implemented and have given a stable quarry until now.

Kensington is a joint venture between Echo Bay Mines and Coeur Alaska, a subsidiary of Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp. The venture is of equalparticipa- tion and is governed by a management committee with Echo Bay as the operator. The project site is 50 miles north of Juneau, Alaska on the eastern shore of the Lynn Canal. The mine and mill are being planned for a production rate of 4,000 stpd. Currently, probable reserves stand at just over 11.3 million tons grading 0.149 oz Au/ton. The project is now in final feasibility study with a production decision anticipated by the end of 1990. Commercial production would begin early in 1993. This presentation dis- cusses the anticipated mine, mill and support aspects of the project.

Analysis of the 2001 Australian census data set can be used to gain a detailed insight into the trends and levels of employment in different industry sectors. There is a common perception that employment of geoscientists within the mining industry and indeed across all industries has decreased significantly. However, the data shows that the number of individuals stating that they are geoscientists employed across all industries has decreased by only five per cent from 5336 in 1996 to 5067 in 2001. Within the mining industry (Australia and New Zealand Standard Industrial ClassificationÆs û ANZICÆs mining class), the number of geoscientists employed has decreased by ten per cent from 2701 in 1996 to 2441 in 2001. These figures, while showing a decrease, do not reflect the magnitude of the decrease commonly perceived. However, further analysis shows the number of geoscientists employed in mineral exploration may have decreased significantly more.

This paper reports a computational study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a mine ventilation system. Ambient air is injected to a rectangular mine drive through a circular duct. Moisture evaporates from shaft wall depending on flow properties of air in the drive-duct system. The physical process involves simultaneous momentum, heat and mass transfer. A species transport equation is employed to account for the moisture concentration in air. The momentum equation is solved using standard k- model, while energy and species transport equations are solved using standard expressions for moisture evaporation rate and heat flux from the drive wall. The aim of this paper is to investigate effectiveness of CFD simulation in relation to mine ventilation in a drive where a significant mass transfer phenomenon occurs. Results from simulation are compared with existing data from a site in Victoria.
