Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 500°C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to self-heat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.

This paper outlines the principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and the depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined. Introduction T HE purpose of this paper is to outline the principles of friction hoisting, to describe the components and to show the advantages of multi-rope friction hoisting. Some calculations are made to show that the power requirements and the initial costs of friction hoists are less than those of conventional drum hoists, once a certain depth of shaft has been reached. The use of multi-rope friction hoists is gradually superseding the employment of the conventional drum hoist in many parts of the world. It results in heavier payloads from deeper levels, an increase in shaft safe-ty and a more compact installation for protection against adverse weather conditions. "Bedding-parallel thrust-hosted gold veins are developed in the Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. The reefs display a complex history characterized by temporally and spatially overlapping events of similar mineralization and deformation. Recognition of the episodic reactivation of these low angle (5° to 10°) thrust faults implicates high fluid pressures (equalling or exceeding lithostatic pressures). Geochemical constraints limit the amount of fluid-rock interaction and the occurrence of transgressive mineralization within the Archaean granitoid basement suggests that the high pressure fluids originated at depth beneath the Transvaal Basin.Similarities exist between gold deposits of Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest and Telfer, Western Australia as well as Passagem de Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. All deposits are sub-parallel to the enclosing bedding which is shallowly inclined. Furthermore, they are also hosted by contractional deformational structures and are clearly epigenetic in origin."

Despite extensive research efforts conducted in the past decades, occupational health risks associated with exposure to nano and ultrafine aerosols emitted by diesel power equipment are still not completely understood. The complexity of physical and chemical properties of diesel aerosols, constantly changing with the implementation of advanced diesel emissions control technologies, make this task rather challenging. The objective of this paper is to identify and characterize nanometer and ultrafine aerosols emitted by diesel engines in the underground environment and evaluate the effects of selected contemporary control technologies on physical properties, chemical composition, and in-vitro toxicology of diesel aerosols. The physical and chemical properties of the nanometer and ultrafine diesel aerosols are to be characterized through a test series in the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine. The crucial part of the study has been development of a facility that allows researchers to generate field results with precision and accuracy characteristics of a laboratory environment. The knowledge obtained from this study should strengthen our understanding of the health implications related to exposure to diesel particulate matter and aid in assessing the potential of various control technologies for reducing this exposure.

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

"Up until the mid 1960's, the only available methods for making continuous weight measurements were through the use of mechanical and electro-mechanical weigh scales. It was during this time period that a new concept in weighing was introduced. It was known and is still known as the nuclear belt weigh scale.During the early days of its appearance in the market place, many things were learned about its advantages and disadvantages for weighing various materials. As with many new devices, it had to go through a ""wringing out stage"" before it became accepted by the weighing industry. Even today, even though it is a proven device, there are skeptics who believe the nuclear belt weigh scale will not survive. Let me assure you, it is here to stay.. 'PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENTThe nuclear belt weigh scale consists of a ""C"" Frame assembly which houses the radioactive source (Cesiwn 137) and the radiation detector (Ionization chamber). The ""C"" Frame assembly is put in place around the conveyor belt as shown in Figure 1. The radiation source emits a fan shaped beam of radiation which covers the full width of the material being conveyed on the belt. Radiation which has passed through the material on the belt is detected by the ionization chamber which is located in the lower arm of the ""C"" Frame assembly. The ionization chamber changes the radiation energy into an electrical signal which is related to pounds per foot belt loading. This signal is transmitted to a highly stable amplifier which combines the pounds per foot signal with a belt travel signal from a digital tachometer which allowed the scale user to be able to monitor total mass being conveyed. Many so-called conventional type scales use belt speed rather than travel to obtain mass per unit time, and then integrate the signal to obtain their weight signal. This unnecessary step tends to erode the overall accuracy of the weighing system."

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. "The Direct Nickel process is a hydrometallurgical technology being developed to treat nickel laterite ores by leaching at atmospheric pressure. The leaching process uses nitric acid in a relatively large excess, is thus non-selective, and much of the soluble iron goes into solution. The first stage of solution purification is iron hydrolysis and the Direct Nickel process utilises the colligative properties of the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to enable the removal nitric acid of varying concentrations via distillation. Once sufficient acid has been removed, the boiling point of the solution is increased allowing high temperatures (up to ~170°C) to be achieved under atmospheric pressure. The higher temperatures initiate the precipitation of the iron primarily as hematite and allow the removal of the acid generated by the hydrolysis reaction. The rejection of the iron is near complete with solution tenors typically falling from 65 g/L Fe, or more, to less than 50 mg/L Fe. The separation of clean nitric acid from the PLS at this stage allows for relatively simple acid recycling. A hematite product with iron content above 60% could also provide an extra revenue stream.INTRODUCTION The Direct Nickel (DNi) Process is a novel hydrometallurgical processing route designed to treat all types of nickel laterite ores in a single flow sheet using nitric acid under atmospheric conditions. A simplified flow sheet is shown in Figure 1.Between 2007 and 2012 the process was developed and refined at Direct Nickel’s laboratory within the CSIRO Minerals’ facilities in Perth, Australia, and in 2013 a series of pilot plant trials were run under continuous operating conditions. The process is designed to treat both limonite and saprolite in the same flow sheet, and after comminution, the blended ore is mixed with nitric acid and leached just below boiling point in agitated atmospheric leach tanks. The acid is added in excess, so typically for a blend of limonite and saprolite the acid addition can be in the order of 1.8-2.0 t acid/t dry ore. After a residence time of between 4-6 hours the majority of the soluble metals have leached into solution and the insoluble leach residue is separated from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) via counter-current decantation."

A GEOLOGICAL study seeking to determine, for economic purposes, the value of the Sydney coalfield as a source of coal supply. Limitations of the coalfield come under two main heads: (a) Areal extent of the undersea coalfield. (b) The distance from shore at which coal can be mined at a cost of production permitting its profitable sale. Conclusions reached are that the areal extent of seams below the Phalen seam is of. small economic importance, and that non-persistence of these seams in full thickness and quality in the undersea extension of the coalfield will put an end to profitable mining before any limitations connected with distance from the shore-line become operative. With respect to the Phalen seam, non-persistence or deterioration of the seam will become effective in the western part of the coalfield, and less certainly in the eastern part of the coalfield, before operation of limitations by distance from shore. In the central portion of the coalfield, the seam probably persists in commercially workable thickness and quality to beyond the limit of mining set by distance from the shore-line. With respect to the seams above the Phalen seam between the Mountain fault on the extreme western boundary of the coalfield and the assumed termination of the deposition area on the eastern extremity of the field near South Head of Morien, there appear to be only such limitations as arise from engineering approach, distance from shore, sufficiency of strata cover between the sea-floor and the upper coal seams, and quality of the coal (with certain reservations as to the continuity of the upper seams under Sydney harbour and in the Sydney Mines-Little Bras d'Or district). Some of these seams have fragmentary land outcroppings from which their persistence seaward is assumed, and there may be other and still higher seams in the strata column which are entirely submarine.

Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

THE Lake Shore mine has been developed by two vertical shafts, with level intervals at 200 feet to the 2200 level and at 125 feet below this horizon. A main cross-cut joins the two shafts on all levels to the bottom of No. 3 shaft, and opening into these cross-cuts are the ore passes and sand passes, which are completed from surface To the 4450 level. In the west part of the mine, additional connections have been made between No. 1 and No. 2 veins, through which the major part of the ore from No. 2 vein west is routed to drifts in No. 1 vein. With the lesser amount of stoping on No. 1 vein, this arrangement permits better haulage to be maintained. The ore passes are driven at 50 degrees from the ends of short cross-cuts off the main ones and are broken through to the levels above at the mouths of the short cross-cuts, to allow for dumping on each level. The passes are controlled at each level by ball-and-chain gates and deliver to crushers and thence to loading pockets, shown in Figure 1. That system is quite flexible in that it is possible to by-pass the crushers at any station and load from either shaft at a number of different pockets. The sand passes are driven from the main cross-cuts at the same inclination as, and parallel to, the ore passes. Each is equipped with a chute and dump hole, so that waste or sand fill may be loaded or dumped at each level. A transfer door, hinged on the bottom, is installed opposite the chute for by-passing fill from one level to the next, and in the closed position protects the opening at the top of the pass. The dump hole situated beside the transfer door is protected by a grizzly with 10-inch spaces. Waste rock may be withdrawn from the system through No. 3 shaft loading pocket at the 2950 level to a waste bin on surface. Levels are developed by drifts in No. 1 and No. 2 veins for their entire lengths. Subsidiary breaks are followed at a later date, when full information has been obtained by exploration, and a considerable amount of development by sub-drifts is carried out in the upper part of the mine, particularly in more or less erratic sections of No. 1 vein.

"Good morning gentlemen. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to tell you a few of the things that happen within a completely unrelated activity, the electroplating industry, except that it does consume metals and has some slight similarity of problems so far as cyanide is concerned.First, just a few general terms about the industry. It is a relatively unsophisticated industry technically, and in many instances there are serious problems in obtaining staff that can operate the various systems that are currently available for destroying cyanide or precipitating metals.I would suggest to you that if you are investigating any system that you consider very seriously the personnel that are actually going to run it. The installation people; probably have some idea what it is all about but the operators must be chosen for their ability and not because they just happen to be available.We perhaps have another area in common. There is very little money for capital expenditures that produce no immediate return or even eventual return on the investment.The industry is largely made up of ""Jobbers"" who are strictly electroplating. There is another group in which the electroplating is captive as in large companions where it is a convenience operation. Also there are specialists, who do other things besides plating but it is a very major part of their operation. This applies to the automotive parts industry.Cyanide applications in the plating industry will be for copper, zinc, cadmium, silver, brass, and gold. Cyanide waste solutions come from those solutions adhering to the plated parts, and from the occasional discharge of the plating bath solutions. Also, in a related industry, the heat treating people with cyanide case hardening have some high concentrations of cyanide to dispose of. Concentrations of cyanide that we treat are 2500 parts per million or higher especially in wastes from heat treating. Solution volumes might be as low as 100 gallons per hour in a well run, carefully operated rinsing system. It may be as high as 3000 gallons per hour where dilution occurs."

"Difficulties arise in implementing environmental technologies in the mining sector because important fundamental processes, which lead to the environmental degradation, are ignored. Weathering rates, the role of bacteria in the process and the incomplete application of the matching principle of accounting at the time the mining disturbance take place. Mining is a multi-stakeholder activity and the environmental problems have multivariate dimensions also effecting process.The limiting factors in the contaminant generation process are the transport of oxygen by advection, convection or diffusion in air or water and the associated microbial activity. Weathering products are transported from the mineral surface by atmospheric precipitation to surface and groundwater. This contamination takes place at different rates, requiring a long time to evaluate technological choices.Restoration efforts have to focus on slow reaction rates in the contaminant generating processes. Technology, which does not address the reaction rates and is selected based on inappropriate time scales, will not provide long-term solutions. Natural approaches to reduce acid generation, based on Ecological Engineering principles have required decades of research and field testing, but now show promise in addressing the cause of AMD and ameliorating its effects."

In 1994, Gold Mines of Australia acquired the rights to the historic Mt. Lyell copper mine, and commenced a feasibility study into expanding production. The ore was shown in laboratory tests to be amenable to single-stage, fully autogenous grinding (FAG) of underground primary crushed ore, and this route offered the maximum cost savings. Flotation performance was expected to be enhanced. However, batch flotation tests done on pilot-scale autogenously ground ore showed an unexplainable recovery loss of between 1% and 3% Cu. A second pilot plant trial was set up, with the ground product feeding banks of continuous flotation cells. Single-stage FAG, FAG/pebble and FAG/ball circuits were tested. Results confirmed a loss of about 3% recovery with single-stage FAG milling. The FAG/ball circuit eliminated the loss. Analyses showed that autogenous milling probably produced more chalcopyrite/pyrite composites and that recovery of these composites was lower than with ball milling. In size fractions below about 53 microns, where chalcopyrite is well liberated, copper recovery was less affected by milling method and flotation selectivity. It was concluded that for the Mt. Lyell situation, a FAG/ball circuit was preferable to single-stage FAG.

A later, barren and pyritic quartzeye diorite porphyry body and related dikes have dissected the quartz monzonite porphyry, homfelsed sedimentary rocks and associated molybdenite mineralization.Drill-indicated geological reserves of molybdenum mineralization outlined consist of 187 270 000 tonnes grading 0.167% MoS2.IntroductionLocationThe Red Mountain porphyry molybdenum deposit is located at 60°59'N, 133°44'W (NTS 105 C), approximately 80 km east-northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon. The property is situated within the rugged Big Salmon Range, 15 km east of the north-northwest-trending Teslin River. Red Mountain, at an elevation of 1702 m, consists of relatively steep, talus covered slopes with prominent gossanous bluffs marking the southeast flank. Relief on the property is 700 m, with tree-line at an elevation of 1450 m to 1500 m (Fig. 1)."

"A simple method is presented whereby the additional quantity and static pressure necessary to compensate for ventilation duct leakage may be estimated using the circular reference functions of modern spreadsheets. Favourable comparisons have been made to the National Coal Board (United Kingdom) design charts and to a case study analysis. IntroductionIn mining, most ducted systems are applied to the development of access tunnels, and most of these systems leak to some extent. When the ventilation duct fails to deliver the required quantity of air to the work place, there is a significant contribution to the development costs, either directly or indirectly.Directly — More air and more pressure are required to compensate for the leakage, more capital development (ventilation shafts, parallel drives) are required because ventilation systems cannot push the fresh air far enough, and longer re-entry times to ensure toxic blast fumes to be diluted.Indirectly — There is a reduction in productivity because of the inclement atmospheric conditions, and/or closure of development ends because of unacceptable atmospheric conditions at the working place. This has been exacerbated over the last few decades because of the increased use of diesel equipment of ever increasing power, and the more stringent Occupational Health and Safety requirements demanding more air flow per kilowatt of diesel power.The leakage from a duct must, therefore, be reliably estimated in order to assess the effectiveness and construction of the system; assess the effectiveness of the maintenance or repair of the duct; appreciate the cost of the leakage, and therefore apply effective maintenance and installation procedures; and engineer safer, healthier and more cost-effective ventilation systems."

Construction safety documents regulate significant safety actions and requirements by which construction workers or employees should abide in order to secure them from occupational hazard events. Therefore, facilitating faster identification of applicable safety requirements from the documents has become an important topic in the construction safety domain. To address the need in this regard, tools and techniques have been developed and research efforts have been made. One of the research efforts is to utilize ontology, a knowledge representation and reasoning approach, as the methodology to achieve the goal of identifying applicable safety requirements. In such ontology-based researches, the development and construction of the safety concept ontology is an essential task as the concepts and the relationships between the concepts both representing key safety knowledge need to be carefully identified. In this paper, the author focuses on the safety documents without predefined concept structure and aims to address the concept and relationship identification difficulties. Specifically, the author leverages the Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) methodology, a theory of data analysis that identifies conceptual structures among data sets, to mine and analyze the documents in order to discover safety concept structure and to further assist the development of the concept ontology for the construction safety documents. The author expects the application of FCA to construction safety domain can eventually benefit the ontology-based approaches for identification of applicable safety requirements.

The 319 Al-Si alloy is one of the most prominently used aluminium-based alloys in motor vehicle and engine applications, Microporosity present in 319 alloy castings reduces the load bearing capacity of the castings, The quantitative prediction of microporosity levels in Al-Si castings has been a subject of much interest for several years. In this research a new criteria function, tf 1,98 R13° (tf: local solidification time, R: cooling rate) was developed by multiple regression analyses, correlating thermal data from simulation studies to experimentally obtained microporosity values. This new criteria function gives a general prediction of microporosity in 319 Al-Si castings.

In 1997 a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded (i) that Canadian industry and NRCan should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and (ii) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale. The need for INAP (International Network for Acid Prevention) was strongly endorsed by company, university, consultant and government experts from Australia, Canada and the U.S. who were convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP's members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed as sufficient justification for the formation of INAP. INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulfide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulfidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage. This paper will explore the international efforts and activities of INAP.

Abstract - The basis of the tomographic velocity imaging technique is briefly described and an application of the method to detect and image a cross-section through a chromite pod is presented. Using the chromite application as an example, the relative costs of tomographic data acquisition and processing are compared with those of diamond drilling to obtain similar resolution. A number of different tomographic survey configurations and the potential role of the method in surface and underground exploration are discussed.
