Tailings from the nickel refinery in Copper Cliff, Ontario, consist of fine silicates mixed with a variable amount of conductive and magnetic minerals mainly associated with sulphides and iron oxides. Subsequent oxidation of sulphide- rich phases within the tailings results in the formation of an acidic leachate that may contain significant concentrations of trace metals. Mapping the spatial distribution of regions of higher sulphide concentration therefore provides insight into the distribution of the acidgenerating potential within the tailings. Electrical conductivity is constrained by two parameters — the concentration of metallic sulphides and the ionic concentration of acid in groundwater. Magnetic susceptibility is directly related to the pyrrhotite and magnetite content. It is proposed that combining information derived from airborne electromagnetic and magnetic surveys can provide an indication of metallic sulphide distribution. Preliminary investigations of airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data acquired concurrently over the sulphide-rich Copper Cliff tailings site reveal that these parameters can provide information on mine tailing extent and permit separation of tailings with varying compositional and alteration levels. Airborne geophysical data provide information about the subsurface while a digital elevation model (DEM) and hyperspectral imagery record surface conditions. Integration of the two data sets can reduce ambiguity when interpreting mine tailing distributions and their subsequent alterations.

"1. INTRODUCTIONTo say that the environment will be a dominant issue in the 1990' s is an understatement. A world-wide ""green revolution"" is taking place not only with the general public and politicians, but in the boardrooms and plant facilities of corporations around the world. There is probably not a plant manager who has not been requested by his corporation to assist in some way on environmental issues by providing advice and strategy, by dealing with customer or community concerns, by considering environmental matters in transactions, by developing new environmental compliance policies and requirements, and so on.There are, in the author's view, three main challenges for the mining industry in the environmental area in the 1990's. This paper will discuss each in turn. The first challenge is the concept of ""sustainable development"". Whatever the meaning of this much-debated phrase, we are rapidly moving beyond the buzzword, and into the specifics. It will clearly impact on the way we manage our companies, our communities and our personal lives.The second is the challenge of personal liability; particularly for officers, directors, supervisors and managers of the corporation. For example, in Ontario today, a good percentage of prosecutions for pollution offences are against individuals, usually managers and supervisors, in addition to the prosecutions against the corporation itself for the same offence. In all likelihood, prosecutions will increase in number and will increasingly be directed at individuals. A corporate president has already served a jail term for contempt of court related to his corporation's breach of a court order related to sewer by-law offences. Although the case is on appeal, another president has become the first officer in Canada to be sentenced to jail for violation of an environmental protection statute. Other corporate officers and directors have recently been charged with breach of their duty under Ontario's Environmental Protection Act."

"The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. Two reasons explain this situation."

"A Pilot Plant was installed in one of the grinding circuits of the Dome Mill, Ontario, Canada. Tests were conducted on a KCCD12 Knelson Concentrator to systematically analyze the effect of operating variables on the performance. The main objective of this test work was to explore the effect of very coarse (6 mm) feed size on GRG recovery and performance of the Knelson concentrator. Preliminary results have shown that coarse feed size is deleterious to maximizing recovery. Size-by-size GRG recoveries have shown an unusual trend in the sense that recoveries do not decrease monotonically with decreasing gold particle size. Similar trend observed in one other full-scale unit has been compared. The observed trend is probably linked to the feed size distribution and top size.INTRODUCTIONKnelson Concentrators are the most widely used semi-continues centrifuge gravity separation units for the recovery of gold and platinum group minerals (Xiao and Laplante 2004). The main advantages over the competing centrifugal gravity units are their design, operating simplicity and good separation efficiency that make them the most common choice for gravity circuit. Despite some characterization at bench scale and a limited characterization at full scale, there is a lack of a comprehensive study of impact of operating variables on efficiency that reflects realistic full scale operating practice. GRG characterization studies, at bench scale, on these units provide information about the occurrence of gold in ore samples but fail to provide adequate information about the effect of operating variables for full-scale units. It is well known fact that such work is difficult to undertake on full-scale units owing to the difficulties involved in sampling and systematic variation of operating parameters. To tackle these problems, a pilot facility consisting of a 12-in CD Knelson Concentrator, a feed screen and tailing pump was installed in one of the grinding circuits of Dome Mill. This paper describes the work carried out and the results.Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV)Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. The JV utilizes the milling capacity of the Dome Mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines. The Dome Mill circuit has gravity concentration, cyanidation and CIP circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used at Dome Mill since inception to recover gold: first by using conventional jigs, which were eventually replaced by two Knelson Concentrators in 1993, one in each of the grinding circuits. Three more Knelsons joined the circuit in 2002 to improve gravity recovery. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was also added in 2002 to process gold concentrates replacing shaking tables (Chong et al 2004)."

Historically, extracting dissolved solids from formation water was economically motivated. Today, main drivers are environmental benefits and regulations, as large volumes of water needed for hydraulic fracturing require treatment before reuse or disposal. The concentration of dissolved solids in flowback water increases with each use and may require treatment prior to disposal. Element recovery from produced water is not profitable unless market conditions are favourable, recoverable elements are abundant, and economical recovery methods are established. Sale of recovered materials could offset recycling and disposal costs. This paper describes markets for Cl, Na, Ca, K, Sr, Mg, Br, Ba, I, B, and Li, and their concentrations in produced water from oil and gas wells in British Columbia. It recommends revising sampling protocol for produced water.

"The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and successfully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop setpoints as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November 1989, to the end of the mine's operation in June, 1990, the ES was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.INTRODUCTIONExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. Proponents of ES's make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, ES's should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988) detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. A complete summary of the flow of uranium from the Cigar Lake ore body through to product at both McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake can be found in a recent paper titled “The Cigar Lake Project – Mining, Ore Handling and Milling” in the March 2004 issue of the CIM Bulletin. "Significant progress has been made over the past few years on characterizing and understanding the hydrodynamic properties of frothers and collectors and their effect on flotation performance. This new understanding of the relationship between chemistry and hydrodynamics has dramatic implications for how flotation circuits should be controlled and optimized. Previous work has shown that choosing a frother of the right ‘strength’ is critical to the optimization process, and the work and discussion presented here serve to strengthen the argument. In addition, we know that collector chemistry will also influence hydrodynamic properties and needs to be taken into consideration. To achieve the desired outcome, the overall system of reagents and operating parameters must be considered. This paper describes and discusses some of the findings from recent research on frother and collector chemistry effects (on hydrodynamics), and how this knowledge can be used to improve flotation performance. Examples from plant experience are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFrothers perform various functions in flotation but the primary ones are control of bubble size in the pulp zone and stabilization of the froth zone. Laskowski (2003) was among the first to try to capture both roles in characterizing frothers in order to provide a basis for frother selection for a given duty, as well as to explore the link between function and frother chemistry (structure). The method he used requires bubble size data and a frothing index; the procedure has been simplified by Cappuccitti and Finch (2008) using gas hold-up to substitute for bubble size, and froth height (without overflow) as the froth stability metric. The gas hold-up/froth height relationship will be referred to as ‘hydrodynamic characterization’. Essentially, the gas hold-up parameter reflects the sum of the hydrodynamic conditions in the pulp phase (water in this case), i.e. the effect of bubble size plus the apparent impact of the water surrounding the bubble due to the frother (Finch, Nesset and Acuna, 2008). Similarly, the stable froth height parameter reflects the sum of hydrodynamic conditions in the froth, i.e. the effect of bubble size undergoing coalescence plus the influence of the water in the lamellae and Plateau borders between bubbles. It could be argued that the gas hold-up/froth height relationship is a superior one to simple bubble size/froth index for discerning differences in frother behaviour"

"Rio Tinto Fer et Titane processes the ore extracted from the Lac Tio orebody to concentrate the hemo-ilmenite (FeO.TiO2-Fe2O3) mineral that is subsequently smelted to produce pig iron and titanium oxide slag. The ore is crushed, heat treated (roasted) and concentrated using dry magnetic separators. This paper describes a model to predict the magnetic susceptibility of the roasted ore and its behaviour in the magnetic separation plant. The model uses a classification of the ore as a function of the size and magnetic susceptibility of the particles. A subsequent division into mineral species allows the simulation of the magnetic separation process. The model is used to assess various operating options when process disturbances occur.INTRODUCTIONOre processing operations consist of ore size reduction followed by the recovery of valuable species in a concentrate that is subsequently sold for its minerals or metal content. The concentration processes are based on the physical and/or chemical properties of the minerals contained in the ore. Flotation is typically used to recover minerals of base metals such as copper, zinc, lead or nickel. Iron ore and other dense minerals are typically concentrated by gravity separation processes. Magnetic separation uses the magnetic properties of the minerals to concentrate magnetite and other minerals, to clean coal concentrate and to recycle ferrosilicon for dense separation processes (Brophy, 1985).Magnetic separators can be divided into low and high intensity separators and high gradient magnetic separators (Gillet, 2008). Most of the low gradient magnetic separators are built as rotary drums that are operated in wet or dry conditions. Dry magnetic drum separators are used by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Sorel-Tracy, Canada to concentrate hemo-ilmenite from the ore extracted at the Lac Tio Lake mine near Havre St-Pierre, Canada. The analysis of production data suggests that process improvement could be achieved by identifying key variables for the control of the magnetic separation circuit and/or by modification to the circuit flowsheet. The use of a process model was considered to be an effective approach to conduct a preliminary analysis of the circuit with a view toward process optimization. However, the literature contains few detailed studies dealing with the modelling of magnetic separation processes."

"The development and characterization of sulphide standards containing as many as seven precious metals has increased the efficiency and comprehensiveness of micro-analyses for deportment studies using laser ablation microprobe inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICPMS). Because trace precious metals occurring in solid solution or as sub-micron inclusions in sulphides, arsenides, and sulpharsenides are often heterogeneously distributed, a significantly large number of analyses are required. Using well-prepared samples it is possible for up to 120 analyses per day, far more than by other comparable methods. Examples will be discussed from projects focused on the deportment of Au and the platinum group elements (PGE).INTRODUCTIONBecause gold and the platinum-group elements (PGE) occur as both discrete minerals and in trace quantities in a variety of minerals (mostly sulphide, arsenide, and sulpharsenide minerals), specialized trace analytical methods were developed and applied to determine the deportment of precious metals in ore deposits, requiring sensitivities ranging originally from about hundreds to presently tens of ppb for individual precious metal or less.In mineralogical studies, micro-analytical techniques such as the electron microprobe were first applied to obtain analyses for major elements in about 1959-60, but as the instrumentation improved early attempts for PGE in potential carrier minerals indicated that reasonable levels of detection (LOD) were of the order of 300-400 ppm, depending on analytical conditions, X-ray spectral lines, and mineral matrix (e.g., Cabri and Laflamme, 1976). Eventually, the lowest detection levels by electron probe micro-analyses (EPMA) obtained for some PGE were of the order of 10s of ppm using high accelerating voltage and current for extended measuring time on peak and background (Gervilla, Cabri, Kojonen, Oberthür, Weiser, Johanson, Sie, Campbell, Teesdale and Laflamme, 2004)."

"The development of uppers drilling at Brunswick Mining is reviewed. This paper describes design criteria for drilling patterns and the research required for selection of a suitable drill jumbo. The success of the uppers drilling program based on operating procedures is highlighted. IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd., operates a 10 500 tonnes per day lead /zinc/copper I silver underground mine some seventeen miles southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick .The No. 12 orebody, first discovered in 1952 by a group headed by M.J. Boylen, had extensive development, including two shallow shafts (500 ft), and test work carried out on it by St. Joe Lead between 1953-1957. However due to complex metallurgy and depressed metal prices, the operation was suspended.In 1961, a group comprised of M.J . Boylen, K.C . Irving and Patino acquired the rights of St. Joe Lead to the No. 12 property. A concerted development plan was initiated along with construction of the necessary sur face facilities and by July 1964, the property was in production at 4500 tons per day.In 1967 Noranda Mines Ltd. acquired operating control of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd."

Substantial efforts to develop application software based on years of research on process modelling are being pursued in many countries ( 1 .2,3,4.5). The late BO's should see a flurry of success stones about significant leaps of productivity achieved in several plants through systematic process evaluation and computer simulation studies.In Canada. the SPOC project (Simulated Processrng of Ore and Coal) was initiated at CAN MET in 1980 with the obJective of developing and transferrrng to the mineral rndustry a computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization. The proiect deliverables include:- an engineering manual covering most aspects of off-line computer simulation:- a bank of FORTRAN software accessible through data communication lines for user familiarization and distributed at a nominal cost in source form by CANMETThe yearly progress reports of the project contain detailed information on the project elements since 1980 16). The context of SPOC can be summed up by quoting Gordon Agar""s 1975 statement during a workshop on research needs in the mineral industry: ""What is needed is a joint effort between the academic community and one or more enliglitened industrial concerns. The effort will have to be an iterative one with data collection followed by testing the model modification of the model (s), more testing prediction, modification. data collection and so on (7). A few parallel in1- t1atives had been reported in papers or research contract reports (8, 9) but there was an obvious need for CANMET to bridge the gap between the R&D and the production sectors by undertaking a project that would document past applications and induce a new generation of initiatives through the consol1dat1on and transfer of suitable manuals and software. The effort took shape as the CANMET SPOC pro1ect in which methodology transfer was to play a key role (10)."

Crushing has proven to be of fundamental importance in mine mill integration at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). Highland Valley Copper has achieved large throughput and good quality control through the gyratory crushers by proper blast design and better gap control. The next step, in optimizing the mine mill relationship, is evaluating the crusher liner wear and its shape influence on performance and product size reduction. To do this a laser measurement device has been developed and data is being recorded on the concave and mantle liner wear. This paper will outline the work to date and indicate specific objectives of the work.

A brief outline covering the shovels and draglines in use in the open-pit mines of Western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon, is given, followed by the procedure for the selection of the correct wire rope for each application. Such fa ctors as wire rope constructions, lay directions and types of cores are mentioned. Once the correct wire rope has been selected, there are variousfactors that can affect the service fife ofthe rope and the reduction ofdown-time during rope change-overs. Factors such as hairpin winding, types of Becket loops, and shovel drum and bail adaptors are described.

"Galmoy Mine, owned by Arcon Mines Limited, has operated since 1997, and is one of three operating lead/zinc mines in Ireland. Changes in ore type starting in mid 2002 created challenges to metallurgical operations at Galmoy. This resulted in unacceptable lead and zinc flotation performance, which prompted initiation of a formal plant review and a subsequent stabilization programme. This involved a structured review of operational practices, development of a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which in turn led to significant changes in process control equipment needs in conjunction with extension of zinc flotation cell residence time.This paper will describe the metallurgy of the Galmoy operation. Reasons for the poor metallurgy experienced in 2002 will be described, as well as the solutions identified to overcome these problems. By the second quarter of 2003, these solutions had been implemented and recoveries had risen to record levels.INTRODUCTIONGeneralGalmoy Concentrator is located in County Kilkenny (Refer to Figure 1 below) and was constructed during 1996 and commissioned in 1997.The concentrator at Galmoy had been designed initially to treat 650,000 tonnes per annum of primarily CW ore type. The main mineral of economic significance was sphalerite (Typically 10 to 11% Zn) with some minor galena (0.7%Pb) in a dolomite (Magnesium Carbonate) host rock.The only other competing sulphide mineral was pyrite (Circa 3 to 5% Fe in Mill Feed. This CW ore type predominated the first 6 years of production, but in August 2002, the ore mineralogy changed due to significantly higher levels of pyrite rich G ore body being blended in with CW ore."

Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.INTRODUCTION – THE GEARLESS PRINCIPLE The principle idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)"

"Introduction It has long been recognized by the hot-dip galvanizing industry that the characteristics of the galvanized coating can be influenced significantly by steel and pro cessing variables. Probably the variable of most concern to galvan izers today is steel chemistry. More specifically, the problem is the excessive reactivity of continuously-cast, silicon-bearing steels. In the past, structural steels processed by general galvanizers were in the low-to-medium ca rbon category and contained silicon at either low impurity levels (as with rimmed steels), or less than approximately 0.10% (as with semi-killed steels). The structures of the coatings produced on such steels are characterized by dense, compact layers of delta and zeta iron-zinc alloy phases and a distinct outer layer of eta zinc, which usually imparts a bright shiny appearance to the coating. The presence of silicon in steel, above the so-called semi-killed levels, is known to cause marked stru ctural changes in galvanized coatings. Such coatings are characterized by a relatively thin delta layer, a thick , coarse zeta layer and frequently an absence of the eta layer. The eta phase, comprising zinc which is carried out of the bath during withdrawal of the work, can be consumed by the continuation of the coating reactions until its temperature drops to the solidification point. This results in a dull grey and often mottled surface instead of the usually bright metallic appearance. These galvanized coatings are usually much thicker than coating specifications requ ire and they are usually more brittle and have poor adhesion to the steel. In service, these coatings tend to develop a rust-like discolouration. With the wider use of continuous casting by the steel producers and the associated additions of silicon in this process, the problem is becoming more important and receiving greater attention from the galvanizing industry ."
