Casthouses throughout the aluminium industry commonly use chlorine gas as a fluxing agent for furnace and in-line treatment of molten aluminium alloys. Its positive impact on the removal of alkali elements and non-metallic inclusions is well known. Nevertheless, the elimination of its use is highly desirable due to the safety and environmental risks associated with storage and handling. Over the past decade, the aluminium industry has significantly reduced its chlorine consumption. This has been achieved by maximizing the chlorine gas utilization efficiency during metal processing, and by the chlorine replacement for crucible and furnace metal treatment applications. Operation of sealed in-line treatment units without chlorine is now possible, but with lower or inconsistent removal efficiency penalties for alkali and inclusions respectively. This paper reviews the progress made at Arvida Research and Development Centre regarding the reduction of chlorine and the development of an alternative to chlorine for in-line metal treatment without penalizing the metallurgical performance.

This paper proposes an improved temporal stability condition for the implementation of an inverse heat transfer method for predicting the time-varying bank thickness of the phase change protective bank inside a high temperature furnace. The direct problem is handled with the enthalpy method. The inverse method rests on the Adjoint Problem and the Conjugate Gradient Method. It is shown that the temporal stability condition for the inverse phase change problem relies on the time delay of the temperature measurements. Results indicate that this time delay is proportional to the heat diffusion time including heat diffusion through the mushy zone.

High Definition Scanning (laser scanning) is a proven technology that is accurate to within 6mm in 50m (¼? in 150?). It can capture in excess of one million 3D point measurements in an average 2 hour scan. It has numerous applications including brown-field retrofits, bridge measurement and analysis, verifying as-built conditions, and crime scene investigation. We most commonly use it for plant design to capture current site conditions, so as to prevent interferences and problems before construction begins. All vital information is captured in the first site visit, which limits the need for extra field trips.

This paper introduces common detrimental consequences to the environment from mining in the Beijing West Mining Area. For example, ongoing mining operations can cause the following environmental deterioration: rock burst, roof rises, roof falls and inrush (Pit dash for ward water). Post-closure, after minerals resources are exhausted, the following environmental issues may remain: landslides (collapse, and mud-rock flow), dropping or exhausted water tables, water pollution, desertification and soil erosion, water accumulation, Slay endanger, ground subsidence, and causal factors in seismic activity. This paper analyzes this wide range of environmental consequences of mining, and offers a theoretical foundation to underpin a corresponding management scheme.

"Gentlemen, one week ago, I attended the University of Minnesota's Annual Symposium on Mining, in Duluth. A good part of this symposium was dedicated to mill linings of rubber.At this symposium, three mining companies published results from long time full scale tests with rubber linings in mills at four different mines. These were the Republic and Empire Mines of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, the Groveland Mine of Hanna Mining Company and the Eagle Mountain Mine of Kaiser Steel Corporation. These papers will be printed in due time and I will not endeavour to relate their full contents, let me only say that in three of the plants, the linings were found to be very economical compared wi.th steel, and that these three are converting over completely to rubber linings, while the fourth, Empire Mine, reported no economical results as far as the shell lining goes, whereas the grates showed promise of becoming economical. The authors of the Cleveland Cliff's paper, however, stated that design improvements in the rubber lining possibly could result in an economical lining also for Empire Mine.That rubber linings in mills, in most cases, show better wear life than steel linings, is known by most of the audience. But, one thing that has not before been disclosed by the endusers is the effect of rubber linings on the grinding economy. All three papers mentioned above reported no change in capacity or grind and two of them reported a decrease in power consumption per ton ground. Hanna Mining reported an average decrease over a three year period for one mill of over 10%. This, of course, puts the economy of a rubber lining in a completely new light. Finally, a point of interest at this meeting was that all three papers emphasized the design aspect, Thus the industry has acknowledged what I believe to be a very important fact - the design of a lining is often more important than the material it is made of."

During the period May 15 ? 17, 2006 four fatalities occurred at #1 Waste Dump, at Teck Cominco?s Sullivan mine located at the city boundary of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. The fatalities occurred in the sump of a water monitoring station. The Chief Inspector of Mines and his staff immediately responded to the incident. The team worked collaboratively with the Teck Ltd. Trail Hazmat team, a consultant group from Rescan Ltd. and other Teck operation and technical staff. Sampling in and around the water monitoring station in the days following the fatalities showed that exposure to a depleted oxygen environment was the immediate cause of the fatalities. The sump located at the base of the shed was hydraulically connected to a French (coarse rock) drain, located at the toe of the covered waste dump. This presentation will briefly review the immediate cause of the accident, the investigation, a brief introduction to the work of the Sullivan Technical panel and the British Columbia government?s response to the incident and the recommendations of the Coroner?s inquest.

The Slave Province, a segment of Archean continental crust, migrated west and north from the northern flank of the Superior protoshield shortly after the Kenoran orogeny. The probable cause of migration, the path it followed and the cause of its coming to rest can be inferred from the Bouguer gravity data. The migration caused an indentation in the edge of the Superior protoshield which precluded the development of the Hudsonian orogenic front under Hudson Bay. As the nickel and asbestos deposits of the Thompson Nickel Belt and the New Quebec Nickel Belt are restricted to this orogenic front, no such deposits would occur under Hudson Bay.

In this situation, a number of alternatives is available to the company, including the possibility of ""going it alone"" by raising capital through a public offering, or by striking a deal with a ""major"" or some other substantial investor.This article focuses on the latter possibility, and discusses in broad term s the main income tax implications of various arrangements between a typical junior exploration company and a larger public company for the development of a particular property. It will be appreciated that a discussion of other important considerations, such as those pertaining to securities exchange regulation s and company law requirements, is beyond the scope of this article.Jointly Owned CorporationPerhaps the simplest way of dealing with the problem of financing the development of a property is to sell the property outright, pocket the proceeds, and run! The aim of the European CEReS project was to develop an innovative copper recycling route based on the coprocessing of coal production waste by bioleaching and printed circuit boards (PCBs) from Wastes of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Coal waste is processed by bioleaching in stirred tank reactors, and the resulting bio-lixiviant solution is used to extract copper from PCBs pre-treated by catalytic cracking. Copper is then extracted using solvent extraction, stripping and electrowinning. The whole process flowsheet combines thermal, biotechnological, physical and hydrometallurgical operations. Once the process concept has been validated at laboratory scale, a simulator of the whole process has been built in the USIM PAC software platform. The tool enables to improve the analysis of the results of the lab-scale experiments and to design industrial-scale scenarios by simulation. The results of such simulations allow to estimate the economical interest and to perform environmental impact assessment. After presentation of the CEReS project objectives and main results, the paper describes the methodology used to build the simulator and define the scenarios corresponding to feasible process routes. The main results of the simulations are then presented with technical, economic and environmental point of views. INTRODUCTION Because of rapid technological innovations in the electronics industry, electronic waste represents the fastest growing waste stream in the world, especially in developing countries (Işildar et al., 2018). Meanwhile, the global copper demand is expected to go on rising in the future. As significant amounts of copper are present in end-of-life printed circuit boards (PCBs), it becomes a necessity to develop efficient copper recycling routes. Metal refining from e-waste is traditionally performed by pyrometallurgical processes. However, the hydrometallurgical processing of PCBs, which has been shown to be technically feasible at laboratory scale with a wide range of leaching reagents, could be a less energy intensive and more flexible alternative (Tuncuk et al., 2012). However, a large amount of leaching reagent is required to leach the metals from PCBs.

"Removal of cobalt, strontium or cesium ion from the aqueous solution containing each metal ion only using microorganism was examined. Arthrobacter nicotianae which had a high ability to remove cationic metal ion was used for the removal of each metal. The removal of cobalt, strontium or cesium using A. nicotianae cells was affected by the solution pH, concentration of metal ion, and cell amount. The effects of above mentioned factors on the removal of each metal and time course of strontium from the solution containing each metal only using A. nicotianae cells were reported in this paper. INTRODUCTIONRadioactive elements, such as cesium, iodine, strontium, plutonium, barium, cobalt, lanthanum, yttrium, and tellurium, were detected around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was damaged by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and the tsunami followed.The removal of radioactive elements from contaminated sources is a worthwhile subject to investigatein terms of environmental control. Research efforts have been especially concentrated on studying microorganisms that remove uranium including bacteria (Andres et al, 1993, Hu et al, 1996, Marques et al, 1991, Strandberg et al, 1981), actinomycetes (Byerley et al, 1987, Friiss and Myers-Keith, 1986, Golab et al, 1991), fungi (Byerley et al, 1987, Galun et al, 1983a, Galun et al, 1983b,Tsezos and Volesky, 1981, White and Gadds, 1990) and yeasts (Strandberg et al, 1981, Schmate II et al, 1978).We have investigated removal and recovery of uranium from aqueous systems using microorganisms isolated from uranium mines. We identified some strains of bacteria with extremely high uranium removing abilities (Sakaguchi et al, 1996), and thus, the microbial biomass may be considered as an adsorbing agent for the removal and recovery of uranium and heavy metals present in aqueous systems around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.In the present study, we screened various species and strains of bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, and yeasts for their ability to adsorb uranium (Tsuruta, 2002). Basic features affecting uranium adsorption?co-existing cations and anions, cell amounts, pH, and the adsorption time course?by Arthrobacter nicotianae cells, which adsorbed the largest amount of uranium, were also investigated. In addition, we examined the removal of an other actinoid element, thorium ion, which may be present with uranium in refining effluents.In this paper, the removal of cobalt, strontium, or cesium from the solution containing each metal ion using A. nicotianae cells is discussed."

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd.; ce projet cherche à développer et à démontrer des technologies avancées à la mine Pansan, à Huainan, en Chine. Une perspective globale a évalué les conditions fondamentales des strates et du méthane dans les couches de charbon durant l’exploitation et a optimisé les séquences d’extraction et les systèmes de captage du méthane dans les mines de charbon. "With the increase of human engineering activities, global climate change and active plate tectonics movement, the giant landslide frequently occurred in southwest China, which caused huge property and human losses. Besides, the potential landslides pose severely threaten to the construction and operation of airports, railways, highways and power stations etc. In order to provide accurate guidance for the landslide investigation, stability analysis and mitigation, the giant landslide is redefined according to landslide volume, depth of slip surface, complexity of landslide mechanisms, and degree of landslide mitigation difficulty, and classified with the typological classification approach based on the twofold attributes of landslide behavior including formation mechanisms and reactivation features. Finally, the threefold particularity of the giant landslide is also summarized, which enables a more effective landslide mitigation design.INTRODUCTIONWith the increase of anthropogenic activities, global climate change and active plate tectonics movement such as continual uplifting of Qinghai-Tibet plateau and strong earthquakes, the occurrence of giant landslides was in ascending trend in southwest China (Huang, 2009), which caused serious destruction, and greatly endangers such engineering construction from safety, time and economic aspects as airports, railways, highways, power stations, etc. Giant landslides have huge scale, complex formation/reactivation mechanisms and mechanical behavior. They may not be identified during the hazard investigation, but may be firstly initiated or reactivated due to the following engineering activities, heavy rainfall or strong earthquakes. Consequently, the landslide mitigation is inevitable and costly. However, it is difficult to control the deformation of giant landslide with lack of a correct understanding of genetic mechanisms (Marui, 2012; Zhang, 2000) and the excessive large sliding forces of the slide blocks calculated by the conventional limit equilibrium method. For instance, the failure of anchored pile wall for the No.102 giant ancient landslide (Zhu et al., 2012) and stabilization measures for the Sidi Rached viaduct landslide(Guemache et al., 2011); four rows of piles had not prevented the occurrence of the No.12 landslide in a high fill slope in the Panzhihua airport (Li et al., 2012)."

Methods have been developed for processing and analyzing reflected solar radiation data obtained by Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner. Spatial resolution for the Landsat series satellites is 30 meters per side per pixel. Materials on the Earth?s surface absorb or reflect different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum depending on their physical and chemical properties and, therefore, typically have characteristic spectral ?signatures?. Using these signatures, environmental parameters such as surface water and vegetation may be identified and analyzed. Principal advantages of the satellite image method for environmental monitoring include: a relatively long historic period beginning in 1985 for which information is available, the reliable numerical basis for the results, and the ability to assemble a historic environmental baseline and provide on-going monitoring for large or remote areas where standard monitoring methods may not be practical. However, because the long-term continued operation of Landsat 5 is problematic due to the age of the equipment, QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images were processed to determine if the two systems are sufficiently similar in their results to allow continuing monitoring using QuickBird data. The QuickBird satellite was launched in 2001 and collects the same visible and near infrared spectral bandwidths as Landsat 5, allowing for equivalent process algorithms for QuickBird, IKONOS, and Landsat 5 data. Spatial resolution for the QuickBird images is 2.4 meter per side, allowing for more detailed characterization of the land surface; spatial resolution for the IKONOS images is 4 meter per side. Because of several differences between the satellite systems, including degradation of the Landsat 5 sensor, it is necessary to calibrate QuickBird and IKONOS results to the Landsat results to verify similarity. Recent images from the satellite systems have been processed and results have been compared to determine the validity of comparing Landsat 5 and QuickBird/IKONOS images so that these newer data can be used reliably in the future instead of Landsat 5 data. Results from this comparison are presented in this paper and suggest that analyses for vegetation using the two satellite systems are comparable, and that little calibration is required. Results from comparison of surface water results from the two systems are less comparable and is currently being investigated by the authors.

We report rare earth element (REE) recovery using immobilized Serratia biofilm depositing metal phosphate via a robust enzymatic mechanism. Activity was approximately halved at pH 3.5 and restored at pH 5.5. REE(III) was recovered selectively against Th(IV) but the method was non-selective between different REEs (La, Y, Eu, Nd). Biofilms were active for a year (half life of ~ 3 months). The activity of aged biofilm was enhanced by pre-nucleation (‘priming’) with NdPO4 prior to onset of flow-through conditions. The use of different ‘priming’ metals and bacteria via a combinatorial approach revealed some REE selectivity through the selective exclusion of specific REEs.

Princess colliery, the largest mine operated by the Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, commenced operations in 1877. It was the first mine sunk in the Sydney coal field with the primary object of working submarine coal. Until 1925, coal was won by the room-and-pillar system. By that year, the depth of cover over the workings was 1,300 feet, and physical conditions had become such that it was impossible to extract completely the pillars formed by the working of the rooms. Because of this, the system of work was changed to longwall in the early part of that year. At first, an orthodox hand-pick method was used, with gate roads laid off at 50-foot centres and the mine cars loaded by hand directly on the longwall faces. Later in the year, the first machine-cut conveyor longwall faces were started.

"The Buffalo Ankerite mine is in the southern part of the Porcupine gold district of northern Ontario. The mine has a history of exploration and development reaching back to 1911, and has been operated continuously since 1932. From 1932 to 1942 a total of 510,874 oz. gold was produced from the mine. In 1941 the production was 71,654 oz. from 448,621 tons of ore.With few exceptions, the ore-bearing veins did not crop out. They were discovered during the prospecting of the prominent outcrops of barren or low-grade quartz-carbonate breccia near the veins.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGThe Porcupine gold district lies in an area of folded and sheared Precambrian lavas, sediments, and intrusives. The Buffalo Ankerite mine is in the southern part of a large fold. The structure appears to be a continuation of the Vipond cross anticline and accompanying syncline described in earlier papers (1, 2). The orebodies lie along both flanks of the synclinal part of the fold, and are known as the north and south vein systems, respectively. No mineable veins have been found on the axis of the syncline (Fig. 1).The rocks found in the mine area are pillow lava, dacite, conglomerate, quartz porphyry, tuff, and fragmental lava. The tuff and fragmental lava are now largely altered to chlorite schist. Productive veins have been found only in pillow lava, dacite, and conglomerate, but a minor amount of gold occurs in some of the quartz porphyry. The Porcupine Creek fault, a zone of intense shearing over 1,000 feet in width, lies immediately south of the mine. A spur fault branches to the northwest from the Porcupine Creek fault, separating the north from the south vein systems ( Fig. 1) ."

Measured detonation pressures of "prills and oil" (94/6 ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) and three of the new "slurry" blasting agents are presented and compared with computed, ideal detonation pressures and with detonation pressures expected from the measured detonation velocities. Results seem to show that the peak pressure in the detonation wave in these cases is the Chapman-Jouguet pressure and that no "spike" exists in these detonation waves. The absence of the Zeldovich-von Neumann "spike" is noteworthy in view of the very long reaction zone lengths of these mixtures. The measured detonation pressure of one of the slurry blasting agents (DBA-3") under steel confinement ( 172 kilobars) is shown to be considerably greater than the ideal detonation pressure of 75 per cent gelatin dynamite (p. = 135 kilobars) despite the fact that the detonation was still somewhat non-ideal in "DBA-3," its computed ideal detonation pressure being 180 kb. The popular 94/b AN /FO blasting agent exhibited a detonation pressure of only 13.5 kb in 5" paper tubes, but 37.5 kb in 5"• steel pipe compared with a computed ideal pressure of 40 kb.

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter in blowing the copper stage has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The key assumption of the model was that white metal and gas phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the chemical reaction of white metal and oxygen was accomplished completely. So long as sulfur existed in the bath, the generation of Cu2O was frozen. The reaction rate was considered to be constant and controlled by the reacted sulfur. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balances over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depended on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency, molten emissivity and oxygen enrichment.

Increasing the production of a Mixer-Settler unit requires either increasing flow rates or increasing extractant concentration. The mixers still have to ensure complete emulsification and to maintain high values of specific interface surface area in order to provide a high rate of mass transfer. Theoretically, an increase in mixing intensity can support increased flow rates without reducing extraction efficiency. Unfortunately, conventional pump mixers and mixing systems create small droplets that do not separate easily. As pumping action and mixing intensities are increased, the quantity of small droplets increases. We describe the development and industrial application of a novel mixing system for efficient mass transfer without forming significant quantities of small droplets, targeting both high mass transfer rate and low entrainment values.

The area around Osisko lake, the Horne mine, and the town of Rouyn, in northwestern Quebec, presents a most interesting structural problem. The present discussion is confined to an area around Osisko lake, about six miles long and three miles wide, shown in Figure 1. The writers are particularly indebted to Mr. Thayer Lindsley, of Ventures Limited, who sponsored the investigation and gave permission to publish this paper. Mr. H. L.
