Abstract - The Bermuda Zn-Pb showing is hosted by dolomitized Blue Fiord Formation of Devonian age, located east of the Ensorcellement dome on the Grinnell Peninsula of Devon Island. Fluid inclusions in hydrothermal calcite indicate that the mineralization precipitated from low-temperature, highly saline brines. The ?34S compositions of sphalerite, galena, and marcasite range from 16.1‰ to 35.2‰. Consequently, the Bermuda showing is interpreted to be Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) mineralization. The apparent age of mineralization has been determined by the Rb-Sr method from sphalerite separates, and a Late Devonian age of 357 ± 50 Ma (MSWD=65), with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7083 ± 0.0020 is indicated. This date, within error, is the same as the Polaris deposit. This suggests that the mineralization formed during the Ellesmerian Orogen, although it is also possible that mineralization is associated with extension, related to the opening of the Sverdrup basin. The strontium and sulfur isotopes and fluid inclusion analyses indicate the involvement of a brine that acquired its salinity from interaction with evaporites, lower in the stratigraphic succession. The Polaris mine is the type deposit in the Cornwallis Zn-Pb district and is hosted by the Thumb Mountain Formation. The results of this study are significant because they demonstrate that regional brine movement is more widespread than previously recognized, and that MVT mineralization in the Cornwallis Zn-Pb district is not restricted to the Thumb Mountain Formation.

"One of the disadvantages of the federal government's idea of ""taxation by consultation"" is that it seems to take longer to enact new legislation. The proposed new rules for taxing automobile benefits is one example. Here is a ball which has been batted around between government and the public several times and still has not come down to earth. Fasten your seatbelts, there may be more to come. IntroductionThe draft legislation released on April 13 contains the details of the government's current proposals on car expenses and benefits. They differ significantly from the last announced position. Finance Minister Wilson has indicated that the release in draft form will provide an opportunity for the Commons Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs (the Blenkarn committee) and other interested persons to comment before the legislation is introduced in Parliament. Accordingly, there may yet be revisions.Notwithstanding the prospect of further changes, the proposed rules generally come into force in 1988. While taxpayers may welcome some of these changes, particularly the increase in the tax-exempt allowance, many must be frustrated that, at this late date, the rules for the current taxation year are not yet finalized."

During the production process of steel and other metals a lot of different by products are generated in high amounts. Some of these residues are recycled to recover valuable metals like zinc, lead, copper and others. Especially the treatment of steel mill dust presents a great challenge. The need for new technologies can be seen in the wide range of available recycling concepts for steel mill dust treatment, however most of them have significant disadvantages. An example is the waelz process, which generates about 650 to 700 kg slag during the treatment of 1000 kg steel mill dust. This so called "waelz slag" must be dumped in the most cases. To avoid a landfilling all generated products must be able to get reused in another application. A so called "Zero Waste Process" can be reached with the "2SDR Process" (Two Step Dust Recycling Process), in which the dust is treated on an liquid iron bath generating cast iron, inert slag and zinc oxide. These products have a further usage and can also be sold. The paper focuses on the process development through trials in lab and technical scale up to planned pilot scales, with an accompanying characterisation of the generated products were done.

"The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the optimum cut -off grade can be calculated for typical large tonnage openpit mines. In the examples, it is assumed that the concentrator tonnage is fixed and that there are no market restrictions. The mining rate is assumed to be variable. This is usually the situation at an operating property.ModellingA model of the ore body is required to examine alternate cutoff grade strategies. The model must be accurate in its relationship between grade and tonnage. Table I shows a typical relationship between ore tons and grade for various cut-off grades. The average strip ratio is also shown. For higher cutoff grades, the ore tonnage is decreased and the ore grade is increased. Strip ratio increases with the cut-off grade.Using the relationship between ton s and grade, and assuming a homogenous, long life orebody, a simple calculation of the optimum cut-o ff grade can be made. The objective is to maximize the present value of cash flows. For the long life homogenous orebody example this objective is satisfied by maximizing present cash flows.Cash flow is calculated by subtracting operating cost from revenue . Operating cost will increase with the cut -off grade as the strip ratio increases."

In the present study, a series of cyanidation experiments were performed on a bulk sulfide concentrate which contained silver in four distinct phases, to determine its extraction rate, varying the oxygen concentration. The results showed that three of the four phases were refractory, aguilarite (Ag,iSeS) being the only leachable phase, and that the effect of the oxidant concentration is minimal. Mathematical simulations were performed, adjusting only the Damkohler number to adequately fit the experimental data. This model, and the mechanism implied, was compared with that found for acanthite (Ag2S) in a previous study, and the differences between the two discussed.

Arsenic, selenium and mercury species are common contaminants in mining aqueous streams and present significant environmental and health problems. The objective of this project is to investigate methods to lower the concentrations of these elements in mining aqueous streams. A new composite media for removal of these elements of concern from mining effluents was developed. The results of bench scale and pilot plant experiments, using the media, indicated removal of arsenic, selenium, mercury and other elements of concern below detection limits.

Applying Friction Stir Welding in an industrial environment requires knowledge about the robustness of the welding process against imperfections in the joint line resulting from production deviations of the parts to be joined or from improper clamping devices. In this work the influence of gaps on the weld quality of friction stir welded butt joints of the aluminum alloy EN AW-5083-H111 is investigated in detail using the method Design of Experiments. As independent input variables, the rotation speed, the feed rate, the tilt angle, the lateral tool offset and the gap width were chosen. Tensile strength was selected as a measure for the joint quality. Moreover, the fundamental response variables of the FSW process, such as weld temperature, axial force and spindle torque, were recorded and integrated in the empirical process model derived by regression analysis. It was found that each response variable decreases with increasing gap width, whereas the largest impact was identified for the axial force and the temperature at the weld surface. In order to improve the joint strength for a given gap width, increasing the rotation speed and the tilt angle or lowering the feed rate, respectively, proved to be a suitable approach. However, interactions between the tilt angle and the rotation speed have to be considered.

"With stricter limits globally being imposed on cyanide discharge levels in plant tailings, having a reliable and well designed cyanide detoxification circuit is critical for any operation. The INCO SO2/Air method is most commonly used for cyanide detoxification where sulfur dioxide and oxygen combine to oxidize cyanide to the much less toxic cyanate. This paper discusses the steps involved with the development, from laboratory through to design, of a robust cyanide detoxification circuit. The goal is to produce a cyanide detox circuit that reliably meets discharge target with the lowest operating and capital cost.Design begins in the laboratory where continuous tests simulate full scale operation of a detoxification circuit. Detailed design relies on several design parameters, based on theory and experience, to ensure the reactor can satisfy requirements of the cyanide destruction reaction. Selection of the correct reagents and their supply to the reactor is important to an operable process with minimal operator workload. The operability of the system relies on correct process control strategies to maintain optimal reagent addition and chemical conditions in the reactor. These design factors are critical to providing a robust plant that will consistently meet cyanide discharge levels, ensuring uninterrupted production and plant profitability."

"High Pressure Grinding Roll (“HPGR”) technology is applied in a broadening range of minerals processing applications for relatively wet or moist materials. HPGR grinding of dry material or involving drying and air classification is more common, for example in cement manufacturing. A number of minerals processing plants are also operating with dry material, either due to process reasons, such as considerations of preceding or subsequent process stages, or as dictated by local conditions of arid areas and scarcity of water. The present world-wide expectation of decreasing availability of water supply urges us to look for alternatives that minimize water consumption.Recently established and envisaged future HPGR applications with dry ores have indicated that the technology of dry crushing and classification as practiced in cement and limestone grinding can be applied in minerals processing. Moreover, dry technology could very well be applied for generating a final fine product at sizes near or below 100 microns, as may be required for beneficiation by, for instance, flotation, magnetic separation or tank leaching.Dry HPGR grinding requires special attention in maintaining suitable process economics, when considering power input in grinding, drying and classification. In some cases, HPGR capacity and roll surface wear life may be negatively affected by a lack of moisture in the feed.This publication summarizes some of the features of, and experiences in dry HPGR applications. This includes design aspects of the classification system and discussion of the wear protection of the roll surfaces. The paper also includes examples of operational experiences of dry practices in minerals processing and cement plants."

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows for the nano-scale exploration of materials at unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. In this paper, we combine this approach with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to analyze the carbon distribution in residual solids found in solvent-diluted bitumen product extracted from Alberta oil sands. Major components of these contaminant solids are ultrafine clays. Biwettable clays have been associated with the formation of solid-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion, which are known to increase the content of both water and mineral solids in the final bitumen product. We demonstrate that the residual solids present in bitumen product contain carbon intermixed with mineral particles of various size and shape. By probing the carbon content at the nanometer scale with the high chemical sensitivity of EELS, we provide direct evidence of carbon intermixing with clay platelets. This clay-organic association at the nanometer-scale will contribute to the biwettable, hydrophobic character of the platelets, and will therefore play a crucial role in the bitumen extraction process

We have developed new recycling technologies, based upon an eco-friendly biotechnology, in order to extract precious and rare metals sourced from end-of-life products and electronics. We have been focusing on the metal ion-reducing bacteria, Shewanella algae and Shewanella oneidensis, that are able to reduce and deposit gold ions (Au(III)) or PGMs ions (Pd(II), Pt(IV) and Rh(III)) into metal nanoparticles at room temperature within 120 min. When processing the aqua regia leachate of printed circuit boards, Shewanella bacteria were able to rapidly and selectively collect gold ions under acidic conditions in the presence of heavy metal ions, proposing a new bio-recovery system for gold. This biotechnological procedure also has the potential to allow the recovery of PGMs from the leachate of automotive catalysts. Shewanella bacteria were also able to successfully perform the complete reduction and deposition of the PGM ions. The ability to collect the PGM ions suggests that this represents a new process for the biorecovery of PGMs from used automotive catalysts. Our proposed biological method enables the rapid and highly efficient recovery of precious and rare metals via separation and concentration utilizing microbial reactions at room temperature.

"It is generally acknowledged that Canadian and foreign-based mining companies are spending relatively fewer dollars in Canada and more dollars abroad than was the case not many years ago. It is common to see the Canadian tax system being fingered as one of the causes in this shift in direction. However, if one takes the time to peel away the surface of our tax system, and to probe a little deeper into its substance, it will be found that the Canadian taxation of mining is generally quite competitive. IntroductionCross-border shopping in the mining industry? - Absolutely! Economics 100 teaches that dollars are votes in the capitalist system, and mining companies are going to cast their limited number of votes where they can achieve the highest return at the least risk. The Canadian consumer knows that taxes are a major factor in cross-border shopping, and mining company executives know that the same tenet holds true in their industry. Unfortunately, mining operations are subject to such a bewildering array of tax rules that making an intelligent decision is not always an easy matter.Statutory Tax RatesConsider, for example, the ""statutory"" tax rates shown in Table 1. (Statutory tax rate in this table refers to the simple sum of federal and provincial tax rates on profits as specified in the tax legislation.) Looking only at the total statutory tax rates (such as 66070 for Manitoba) , one might quickly observe that the Canadian mining industry is subject to a truly onerous tax regime, especially as compared to the United States where statutory tax rates can be in the 34% range."

Confronted with this prevailing attitude, Canada's mining industry starts out with two strikes against it in its bid to attract and hold on to its fair share of available work force.Behavioural scientists have, for decades, been seeking answers to the questions:• ""Why do people work?""• ""Why do people choose a particular occupation?""• ""Why do people choose a particular organization?""• ""Why do people leave one organization for another?""• ""Why do some people stay in an organization?""• ""Why do some people work harder than others?""Their answers to these questions, although tentative and often contradictory, are being used by more and more organizations to solve people problems. Few industries can afford to ignore them, least of all, perhaps, the mining industry.Consider the following developments:I. The paper suggests a number of factors that might be taken into account in negotiating royalty terms.IntroductionRoyal ties are a part of mining life in Canada. They are used by many kinds of individuals in many kind s of situations. Prospectors commonly take royalty interests back when they transfer claims to development companies. Mining companies disposing of undeveloped (or sometimes even developed) properties are often paid at least in part by royalties. Royalties are even used by institutional investors with no other connection with the resource industry.Such different royalty holders have different investment goals, different cash flow requirements, and different risk / return preferences. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty type s. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator's NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator's bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk/ return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. On the other hand, the potential for significant gains under a cents-per-ton royalty is also very limited. The royalty holder will not share in any increases in the market price of the end product or any cost reductions achieved by the producer."
