"The cement deep mixing (CDM) method has a wide range of applications, both on land and at sea. This paper describes the features of the equipment on CDM vessels engaged in maritime construction in Japan: the DCM No. 3 barge, the DCM No. 6 barge, and the DCM No. 8 barge. The DCM No. 3 barge is a large vessel with a mixing area of 5.7 m2. The design of the elevator of the deep mixing unit on the DCM No.3 barge enables us to conduct deep underground/ sea operations. This enables us to conduct mixing at depths of up to 52.6 m below the seabed and up to 70.5 m from the water surface. Additionally, since the tower is installed on the center of the barge, it has excellent stability. The DCM No. 6 barge and DCM No. 8 barge are mid-sized vessels with a mixing area of 4.6 m2. The DCM No. 6 barge was fitted in 2013 with energy conservation equipment and upgraded to an environment-friendly CDM barge. The energy saving upgrade used electric power, instead of hydraulic power, by inverter controlled alternating current motor for both mixing unit and main hoisting winch. This enables the using on effective use of regenerative power when the deep mixing unit is lowered. A feature of the DCM No. 8 barge is that it has an inclinable tower located at the bow section for elevating the deep cement mixing unit. Since the tower can be greatly inclined, the hull has a lower center of gravity and greater stability when the vessel turns. This also allows the vessel to pass below bridges and simplifies cruise preparations, outfitting and dismantling work.INTRODUCTIONThe cement deep mixing method (CDM method) involves mixing and stirring a cement-based solidifier into soft ground to rapidly bring the ground to the desired firmness. This method is used to suppress ground shear deformation, increase strength, increase slip resistance, and mitigate liquefaction and subsidence. It has been recently used in Japan in the construction of revetments at controlled waste disposal sites, both to boost the strength of the seabed and to prevent the seepage of waste matter and other pollutants. Undertaking CDM construction work at sea requires specially constructed marine construction CDM vessels. Since CDM construction at sea entails many more restrictions on working conditions than construction on land, the vessels themselves sometimes need to be modified. This paper will describe 1) the remodeling of the turrets and mixing machinery for mixing to great depths in deep water (DCM No. 3 barge with eight axes); 2) the upgraded of equipment on board CDM vessels after accounting for environmental considerations (DCM No. 6 barge with four axes); and 3) the use of a inclinable tower (DCM No. 8 barge with four axes)."

Two Towers are currently under construction in Central Moscow in the Russian Federation. Building A is a 96 story tower and Building B is a 65 story tower. The columns in both structures bear on a thick concrete mat that is supported on drilled shafts, 1.5 m in diameter. The shafts derive their capacity from weak limestone with layers of marl. Assigned allowable shaft loads were initially based on rock strengths that were later verified by load tests using the Osterberg Cell. One of the load tests was carried to near failure which allowed refining socket friction values that were later used in the design of Building A. All shafts were advanced using an auger and concrete placed in the dry. Grout tubes were placed with the reinforcing cage which allowed grouting of the limestone in contact with the shaft. Load sharing between the shafts and the mat was approximated using published methods as well as site specific finite element analysis. This paper covers the methodology of design, analysis of the Osterberg results to derive non-linear stiffness of the rock and differences between finite element analyses and results by approximate methods.

The dynamic behavior of pile foundations is investigated in both theory and practice. The computation method for vibration of pile foundations and DYNAN computer program are introduced comprehensively. With a model of non-reflective boundary between the near field and far field, the Novak's method of soil-pile interaction is improved. The dynamic analysis and design of foundation for a reciprocation compressor with driver power 15,000 HP are described to illustrate the computation method of soil-pile interaction. Different design options for the piles are compared to limit the vibration of foundation and produce a safe, economic system. The design with 16 - 0.9 m piles is adopted rather than that with 25-0.5 m piles, since the larger damping is provided by the piles with larger diameter. Both field and laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the soil properties including down hole seismic tests to provide soil shear wave velocities at different depths. The method and procedure used in this study can be applied to the design of pile foundations for tall buildings, bridges and offshore platform with soil-pile interaction under seismic, blast, sea wave and other dynamic loads.

This paper describes a new wave equation analysis program called ZWAVE, which is a program specifically for external combustion hammers. The program is de-scribed in detail, the discussion dealing with topics concerning the program such as 1) the numerical method the program uses to integrate the wave equation, which is different from most other wave equation programs; 2) the modelling process of both cushioned and cushionless hammers; 3) the automated generation of mass and spring values for both hammer and pile; 4) the method of dealing with plastic cushions; 5) the use of a recently developed model for computing shaft resistance during driving; 6) the computation and generation of values based on basic soil properties such as shear modulus, Poisson's Ratio and soil density; 7) the completely interactive method of feeding data to the program; 8) the method used to compute the anticipated rebound and the energy used to plastically deform the soil; and 9) the format of the inter-active input of the program and the program's output. Sample problems for the program, along with comparison of the program results with data gathered in the field, are presented.

Large diameter (1.0 to 2.5m) bored piles have been widely used to support buildings and elevated roadways in Hong Kong. Most of these piles are founded on a hard bearing stratum such as granitic or volcanic bedrock, in the newly reclaimed areas along the water-front, the bedrock stratum can be as deep as 70-80 metres below ground surface, and construction of bored piles to bedrock in this case is difficult and unjustified. Nevertheless, Building Ordinance Regulations in Hong Kong require piles to be founded on bedrock. To overcome this problem for elevated roadways, trial piles have been designed founded on dense, completely decomposed granite. A number of piles have been constructed and subsequently load-tested to allow the rate of mobilisation of skin friction to be measured. This paper outlines the design, construction and testing method, and comments on the test results from several trial piles. GEOLOCICAL CONDITIONS The geology of Hong Kong consists predominantly of acid volcanic rocks intruded by granite. The granite has been deeply weathered, and variations in sea level have produced a drowned coastline with sequences of alluvial, colluvial and marine deposits overlying the weathered bedrock. Reclamation has extended this coastline. Typical site conditions are described later in the paper.

The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shaft (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons, ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

As available space in urban centers becomes more scarce, builders and developers are increasingly turning to vacant, existing structures to meet cities' growing needs. The developers of City Ridge Roadside Development and North America Sekisui House (NASH) - - found a suitable site for their "urban village" at the former Fannie Mae headquarters complex on Wisconsin Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., which had been vacated in early 2018. The urban village will consist of eight new structures centered around the building that currently sits on the site. All told, the project will include 687 residential units, a 150-room hotel, over 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sq m) of retail space, and 62,000 sq ft (5,760 sq m) of office space. A below-grade parking structure will extend across most of the footprint. The Fannie Mae building, which was designed in the Colonial Revival style to mimic the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia, was named a historical landmark following a request from the development team. The central portion of its existing masonry structure was built in 1956 on pile caps with small-diameter cast-in-place piles. Two wings, which were added in 1962, were built on belled caissons. There are three levels above grade and one below.

Whilst there is much innovative work being undertaken in South East Asia in the space allowed in this paper we have settled on describing in more detail the work that has been done with shaft grouting of deep foundations and piles founded in rock both in end bearing and socket friction. The paper is necessarily in two parts. The first part is about the application of shaft grouting since its introduction to the region some eight years ago. It describes, for the first time, much of the detail of the different techniques used and the construction and the design benefits achieved with shaft grouting in five countries in the region. The second part outlines the enhancements achieved in the design of piles founded in rock and brings together the results of 10 years of test loading. This includes the load testing of 1.2m to 1.5m diameter piles to a maximum of 30MN on granite and a recent programme of tests on a wide range of strong rock types in Hong Kong. The ground conditions for these deep foundations vary widely, from sedimentary soils to in situ weathered granite and meta-sedimentary rocks. The construction techniques include barrettes constructed using mill techniques and bored piles formed under bentonite and water using both oscillators and rotators.

This paper addresses a new experimental procedure to measure the shaft friction and the base resistance of bored piles during static load tests. It is proposed that a set of polystyrene foam discs, placed between the shaft and the base of the pile, be used instead of the usual instrumentation. Throughout the initial stages of the loading test, the foam discs will allow only the mobilization of the shaft friction. The load x settlement curve clearly shows that the shaft friction vanishes at low settlement values. As the load test proceeds, the base resistance is also mobilized. This procedure was used in two belled piles bored at the Experimental Foundation Field of the University of São Paulo, at São Carlos, Brazil. Both piles were 8 m long and had a shaft diameter of 0.6 m. The enlarged base had a diameter of 1.5 m and a height of 0.9 m. Twenty foam discs with a thickness of 20 mm each were placed between the enlarged base and the shaft of the pile. The load tests indicated ultimate shaft frictions of 28 and 30 kPa for measured settlements of 8.98 and 7.39 mm. Base resistance values at failure were 617 and 499 kPa, for a chosen settlement of 10% of the pile base diameter. The proposed approach seems to be straightforward, efficient and inexpensive.

A series of tension tests were performed on prototype scale steel pipe piles at two sites to evaluate the influence of scale and pile plugging on the unit skin friction developed in axial tension. The first site consisted of a clean medium dense fine sand above the water table. The second site consisted of a loose silty sand with the water table within about 0.5 m of the ground surface. Pile load tests performed at each of the sites included piles with diameters ranging from 73 mm to 114.3 mm, which may be considered driven "micropiles". At the first site, pile lengths of 6.1 m were used; at the second site, pile lengths of 9.1 m were used. Some of the piles were driven open-ended while others were fitted with a conical tip to form a closed end. During installation, pile plugging measurements were taken on the open-ended piles after each 0.30 m of penetration. The piles were allowed to rest for a period of about 30 days after driving prior to performing the axial uplift load tests to failure. The results indicate that in the medium dense fine sand the unit skin friction developed in tension is dependent on both the amount of plugging that occurs and on the size of the pile, which was not the case for the loose silty sand.

Caissons which are locally known as well foundations, which may very in diameter from 30 m to more than 30 m and in majority of the cases having depth to diameter ratio between 1 to 1.5, are normally used to support piers of long span bridges or tall structures, which transmit high magnitude of axial load, horizontal thrust and moment. On the basis of depth to diameter ratio the foundation system appears to fall in the category of shallow foundations but due to deep excavation, it is observed that part of the moment acting on the caisson is shared by due the sides due to development of passive resistance. The problem is statically indeterminate and three dimensional in nature. To ascertain the various parameters needed for design, such as moment shared by base and sides, horizontal and vertical displacement and tilt, and base and side contact pressure diagrams need to be obtained from nondimensional relations of parameters with respect to D/B ratio derived from large scale model studies conducted by Katti etal at IIT, Bombay under MOT Project between 1976 and 1988 and later on at UNEECS. On the basis of above data on attempt is made to put forward guide lines for selection of parameters for design of caisson foundations / well for following cases for opening us some discussion. The cases are cohesive soil at the side and cohesive soil, or sand or soft rock or hard rock at the base.

Pile foundations are underground projects which are carried out under complicated site conditions, so it is difficult to summarize their characteristic patterns from the everchanging practical pile foundations. In combination with theories, the paper analyses the effects of sound reinforced concrete piles and various types of defective piles on the propagations of stress waves. Through testing on prototype pile models, by use of the transient dynamic method and comprehensive analysis in both time domain and frequency domain, their reflection characteristics and patterns are acquired. In addition, discussions are carried out in combination with some real projects. Our model tests include comparison of large scale pile models of 20X20cm in cross section, 5. 0m in length respectively in air, standard sand, and natural stratum; prototype model tests of digged piles of 0. 7-1. 2m in diameter, and 18m, 30m in length; prototype model tests of bored piles of 0. 6m, 0. 8m in diameter, 12-20m in length. Test results show that no matter in air or buried in medium, the intrinsic characteristics of sound piles and various types of defective piles are fixed. In their time domain waveforms and spectral diagrams, obvious regularity are shown, which proves that the relations between the pile natures and their dynamic responses are fixed, which provide basis for correct judgement of pile soundness and natures of defective piles.

The aim of this article is to present an application of jet grouting technique in stiff clays for foundations of the natural gas combined cycle power plant, under construction in Aliaga, Turkey. The plant site is in the Aegean coastal region and 60 km north of Izmir. The foundation soil is composed of quaternary alluviums on top and tuff base rock. The thickness of the alluvium varies between 16 m to 30 m. Groundwater was observed 2.5 m below the ground level. At the design stage, settlement analyses were carried out for the various buildings and facilities in the power plant. Based on the analyses, it was predicted that total and differential settlements are not tolerable, thus jet grouting is implemented as a ground improvement under the majority of the foundations of the power plant. This paper also describes the selection of jet grouting technique, application type and details of the process parameters such as injection pressure, number and size of nozzles, lifting and rotation speeds. Prior to the commencement of the jet grouting works, a number of preliminary parameter tests and preliminary pull-out tests were carried out throughout the site in order to define and verify the jet grouting process parameters to achieve the required diameter of 600 mm and minimum jet grout strength of 3.2 MPa. Moreover as part of the comprehensive quality control and quality assurance program pursued in the project, a number of tests; such as continuous coring, integrity testing, installation of confirmatory jet grout columns, were carried out during the production of jet grout columns.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Playa Vista Development is the largest urban infill development in the history of the United States. Overall, it encompasses about 1100 acres in the City of Los Angeles and is situated north of Los Angeles International Airport near the Pacific Ocean. The development taking place on the project consists primarily of high-density residential condominiums with 1 to 2 levels of subterranean parking . The geotechnical conditions are typified by high groundwater, soft clays, and liquefaction, in addition to environmental issues such as methane.Due to a combination of the geotechnical factors and noise restrictions, both driven and drilled piles were not feasible once the initial phase of the project was occupied. As a result, the project developer undertook a testing program that consisted of the installation and load testing of 9 piles in order to obtain City of Los Angeles acceptance of a pile installation system that met the site constraints. The testing program was divided between two separate contractors operating on sites set on opposite sides on the street (Figure 1 ). Contractors working in Test Areas A & B employed the ""dry dip"" and ""wet dip"" methods of auger pressure grouted displacement (APGD) pile installation, respectively.This paper summarizes the extraordinary program undertaken to install, document, test, and examine auger pressure grouted displacement piles at this site. The program ultimately resulted in City acceptance of auger pressure grouted displacement piles, a historically difficult challenge given the City's resistance of acceptance of ""new"" technologies.A summary of elements included in the test program are: (1) quality control; (2) load testing; (3) long-term testing; (4) non-destructive testing; and (5) pile exhumation."

The paper presents the results of a comparative and parametric analysis in which a numerical program developed exclusively for groups of deep foundations under general loading (vertical, horizontal and moment loads) was used. This program, developed in the doctoral thesis work of Zhang (2000), extends the finite layer method to accommodate a simultaneous general loading on top of piled raft foundations, allowing the establishment of a coupled relationship between displacements (in all three directions), rotations (in two directions), and external loads. Zhang (2000) has extensively tested and validated this program against well known case histories, but has not applied it to piled rafts overlying unsaturated tropical soil materials. Hence, this paper further explores the applicability of this program by using it to simulate the behavior of experimental field loading tests carried out at the University of Brasilia (UnB) experimental site. At this site, Cunha and Sales (1998) and Sales (2000) carried out several loading tests on small scale isolated rafts (1 x 1m) and piles (L=5m, dia=0.15m), group of piles (4 piles, raft clear off the ground) and piled rafts (1 and 4 piles underneath a raft in contact with the soil). The authors adopt Zhang's program to backcalculate, hence simulate, this series of experimental field loading tests under vertical loading. They also use this set of results to "calibrate" the program for further parametric analyses. The parametric analyses were carried out with different piled raft configurations in this same soil type, trying to evaluate their field behavior under the effect of distinct (geometric) configurations of pile distribution.

Rigid inclusions are widely used in the U.S. as a ground improvement tech- nique, particularly for industrial, low- rise and highway applications with poor subsurface conditions, where control of settlement is necessary. Rigid inclu- sions consist of grouted or concrete elements typically 12-24 in (305-610 mm) in diameter that may or may not be reinforced with a center bar. Typical soil conditions where rigid inclusions are feasible might consist of a surface layer of fill and natural, granular soil, followed by a stratum of soft silt or clay overlying a dense or stiff formation. Rigid inclusions are installed from the existing ground surface or suitable work platform, through the surface soils and through the soft, compressible layer, and into the deeper layer, which is less susceptible to compression- induced settlement. Typically, when used to support an extended area surcharge, the inclusions are installed in a rectangular or triangular pattern at regular spacings ranging from 5-12 ft (1.54 m), depending on a variety of factors. The rigid inclusion system is often capped with a load transfer platform (LTP), whose function is to direct a significant portion of the applied load toward the rigid inclu- sions. Additional load is transferred to the rigid inclusions through the upper fill soils above the compressible layer. The rigid inclusions transfer the applied load axially to their tips and into the deeper layer. In the U.S., rigid inclusions are mostly installed using displacement auger systems. The use of a dis- placement auger has significant advantages. It produces zero to near- zero spoils, which is an important environmental consideration. The

Project documents and the United States Army Corps of Engineers? permit for construction of the Stemmers Run Relief Wastewater Force Main across the Back River in Baltimore County, Maryland specified a minimal width, steel sheet pile cofferdam and a 12 feet wide, pile supported, timber decked, causeway trestle ? both approximately 1700 feet in length. Due to the impractical width of the causeway, the contractor desired to combine the cofferdam and the causeway structures in order to minimize wetland disturbance and maximize access for construction equipment. The resulting support structure was a steel sheet pile cofferdam, approximately 17 feet wide, internally braced, and capped with transverse timber deck mats to serve as the access and work trestle for the trench excavation, pipe bent construction, and trench backfill. Construction of this cofferdam/causeway progressed from the north shoreline toward the middle of the river. Then, working back toward the north shoreline, the contractor excavated, installed the 54 inch diameter pipe and H-pile support bents, and backfilled the trench in increments of approximately 60 linear feet. Excavation spoils from one section were used to backfill the preceding section. As the pipe installation progressed toward the north shore, the steel sheet piling and timber deck were removed. As sufficient sheet piling and deck mats were removed, the contractor began the process anew from the opposite shoreline using the reclaimed materials. The project was complicated by the presence of deep, very soft, weight of hammer, silts and organic clays and an unbalanced, hydrostatic head of 20.5 feet. In addition, concurrent pile driving, excavating, and backfilling in successive cofferdam sections required the use of heavy, long reach, hydraulic backhoes, and a 200 ton capacity crawler crane which controlled the design of the timber causeway deck and its supporting sheet piles.

In the summer and fall of 2007, Drill Tech Drilling and Shoring, Inc. designed and built three 24-foot inside diameter shafts in Northern California using soil mix panels for support. The soil mixing was performed using the Bauer Cutter Soil Mix (CSM) method, by which rectangular soil mix panels up to 71 feet deep were arranged in an overlapping manner to form a 24-foot inside diameter circle. The shafts were then excavated to depths up to 51 feet. One of the shafts was a test shaft and used only the soil mix panels for support. The other two shafts were located immediately adjacent to the Mokelumne River and were used as access pits for a microtunnel drive under the river. These two shafts had wide flange beams embedded in the panels and were supported with several levels of ring steel placed during excavation. This project was the first use of the Bauer CSM method in the United States. The CSM method has been used extensively in Europe and Asia, but never for this application and never with this high a loading criteria due to water head and microtunnel reaction forces. Soil conditions at the river crossing shafts consisted of sands, gravels, and cobbles over top of sandstone and conglomerate bedrock ranging in strength up to 5,000 psi. Groundwater was within several feet of the surface. The shafts were successfully completed between October 2007 and January 2008, and the microtunnel was successfully completed in February 2008. This paper provides discussion regarding selection of the shoring type, structural design, the soil mixing method, and the mix designs. Shaft construction, shaft performance, and the capabilities of the CSM equipment are presented.

With the advancement of offshore wind farm projects towards deeper waters and larger wind turbine generators, founda- tion solutions other than the monopile have received increasing attention over the past 5 years. Monopiles are the most commonly used foundation solution for offshore wind turbines, with 82% in European waters founded on monopile foundations (EWEA, 2019). However, 2018 saw a record number of suction bucket jacket (SBJ) structures, which consist of a three-legged jacket sup- ported by a suction bucket at each leg (Figure 1), installed for offshore wind. applications. SBJs have now been installed successfully at the Borkum Riffgrund 1, Borkum Riffgrund 2 and Aberdeen Bay offshore windfarms. Suction-installed foundations, referred to in this paper as suction buckets, suction caissons, suction piles or suction anchors, have been widely used in the offshore industry since the early 1980s for a range of offshore applications predominantly as anchors for floating offshore structures - where they are "the most widely used anchor types for deep-water mooring applications" (McCarron, 2011). Suction buckets, installed using pumps that generate suction forces by creating a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the bucket, allow for the installation to be undertaken with minimal noise and without the use of mechanical force. Therefore, a key difference between suction-installed foundations and other foundation types is that the installation design, which must consider the soil type, soil strength and installation specific risks (for example, soil stratification with significant differences in permeability) may have a direct influence on the dimensions of the foundation. While the number of SBJS installed for offshore wind applications has increased significantly in recent years, the installation process for SBJ struc- tures is yet to become standard practice and is considerably more complicated than the installation process for mon- opiles. "The installation of Bored Piles and Diaphragm Wall under slurry using tremie raises quality concerns on the integrity of concrete. It is vital to understand the effects on concrete integrity during concrete pouring process. This paper intends to unveil to what extent the compressive strength of the concrete pour is affected in contact with drilling fluid still. Another important angle of analysis proves whether the inclusion of solids particles of un-hydrated fluid could have impact on the concrete compressive strength. The testing comparing the response of concrete compressive strength when drilling fluid is included into the concrete mix altering the water/cement ratio by 5%, 20% and 30%. Comparative results are analysed between two different hydrated slurries namely sodium activated Bentonite and 3rd generation synthetic polymer.1. INTRODUCTIONSoil stabilization is the base for a successful deep foundation execution. The G3 System Slurry developed by Ground Engineering Operations (GEO), with its third generation polymer, namely PolyMud®, is an innovative and unique alternative to the mineral based slurries for soil stabilization, enhancing the quality and integrity of the underground foundation structures. It optimises the production rate of work progress and cost as well. At the same time, PolyMud® slurry is proven to be environmentally friendly.Guaranteeing the maximum quality of the foundation elements according to the initial design is one of the most important objectives and a concern for the foundations contractors. In order to fulfil the project expectations in this aspect, any incident that could compromise the designed concrete integrity and capacity must be avoided.GEO, has carry out its own research regarding effects on the concrete compression results if drilling fluid intermixes with fresh concrete while pouring. To shed light in this regard, GEO, in collaboration with CML (Concrete Materials Laboratory) Sdn. Bhd., carried out empiric tests that analyse this particular event from different perspectives, bringing up the corresponding results that will be studied and commented in this article."
