A new generation of high performance and high density ammonium nitrate prills have been developed. These cycled "prills" offer significant improvement in ANFO mixing time, detonation velocity performance, and heaving capabilities. In addition, their safety characteristics are better than standard ANFO explosives.

The development and testing of a simple mechanical stemming aid (Patents pending) resulting from a Joint venture by Incubator Technologies Inc. and the University of Missouri-Rolla and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy is described. The aid comprises a solid unit placed in the stemming above the explosive column and is designed to improve blasting efficiency and reduce drilling and blasting costs. It works with back filled drill cuttings or any other suitable stemming material.

In the Kansas City metropolitan area, mineable Bethany Falls Limestone occurs 80 ft below river level under the 700 acre Park College Campus on the north bank of the Missouri River at Parkville. For 20 years prior to this project various firms passed over this opportunity to mine this property for construction aggregate because of uncertain costs, financial risk, and the difficulty of constructing an entry tunnel. This paper describes the drill and blast construction, rock bolting, and shotcrete lining of a 750 ft. long, 15% declining grade, truck tunnel through several Pennsylvanian limestones and shales.

In 1989, Les Entreprises Kiewit Ltee signed a C$32 million contract with the Societe d'energie de la Baie James, on behalf of HydroQuebec, to excavate the intake and tailrace channels for a second powerhouse at the LO-2A James Bay hydroelectric project. The multistage contract included removing three marine rock plugs. The first plug was blasted in April 1990. It was a 43 yards wide, triangular shaped wedge that projected into 18 yards of water. Located at the mouth of the intake channel, it contained over 72,000 yd3 of rock, more than twice the 30,000 yd3 found in most rock plugs.

The fragmentation distribution of the blasted ore is an important descriptor of blasting results. Traditionally it has been hard to measure quantitatively. Developments in image analysis over several years makes it more feasible to measure fragmentation before crushing on a continuous basis. Post crushing, mill feed distributions can also be measured.

Schedule IV containers in Canada and IME- containers in the United States have made possible the transport of mixed loads. That is, using these containers for detonators, one can simultaneously transport detonators and explosives on the same vehicle. As a result of a recent accident, the Canadian Chief Inspector of Explosives asked for a review of the appropriateness of the Schedule IV container in its present use. The Canadian Authority asked for a re-assessment of the adequacy of the Schedule IV container in preventing propagation of a reaction from the detonators in the container to the remainder of the explosives on the truck, and its ability to contain fragments generated by the detonators. A series of tests was performed to determine the initiation threshold temperature for non-electric detonators and the failure threshold temperature for the shock tube to establish some guidelines for preventing communication from one case of detonators to another within the transport container at elevated temperature. Tests fell into the following categories: inter-case sympathetic detonation, detonator thermal auto-initiation, shock tube thermal sensitivity, and intra-case sympathetic detonation. The results indicate that temperature is a critical factor, which determines to what extent, if any, communication occurs.

The time domain during which an explosive detonates and causes rock to fragment and displace is on the order of tens of milliseconds. Because of this, the dynamic processes that occur during this time frame often become a source of confusion when trying to analyze the performance of explosive products in decked blast designs. As an illustration, the authors have experimentally examined explosives malfunction in decked blasts through state-of-the-art measurement techniques. The interaction of explosive products and blast geometry was examined in detail using the analysis of a series of decked blastholes. Explosive and initiator malfunction in decked blasts is often considered to be entirely the result of insufficient inert decking material, however, it is shown that rock properties and dynamic burden conditions may have a significant impact on decking performance. The successful application of deck-blasting technique for control of ground vibration amplitude relies on an understanding of the true dynamic performance of the blasthole.

Bardon Trimount Inc., a large producer of aggregate, crushed stone, and concrete, was experiencing significant public opposition to its five quarries in the Boston area. It was believed by the authors that this opposition could be significantly lessened if the total number of blasts per week were reduced. Although the blasting company at these quarries, Austin Powder Company, contended that this could easily and safely be accomplished by increasing the size of the blasts, regulations precluded this alternative by limiting the total amount of explosives that could be used per blast.

Recruiting and retaining students in the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important each year. With no undergraduate degree in explosives engineering currently available in the United States, it is from other industries and degree disciplines we must recruit. The 2014 annual ISEE conference saw the first anonymous online survey distributed to members of SEE student chapters of the International Society of Explosives Engineers. The survey contained questions about future job and career plans, ideal job placement, expectations of salary and current academic degrees. The purpose of the survey was to determine what these students expect or require from a career in the explosives industry, and their current path to pursue this. This information can help steer recruitment activities and job offers for graduating students. The success for both student response rates and interest from the industry has allowed space for a yearly update of this survey. This paper provides the data from a second, restructured, online survey distributed to all student members of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, globally. Understanding the main incentives for a student to accept a graduate position as an explosives engineer can help us, as an industry; position ourselves to remain competitive in recruiting against other major degree disciplines.

This paper briefly describes the past history of blast management. A modern blast management suite is then presented which demonstrates the current capability of the functional link between an electronic blasting system and blast design software. Finally, we look at the potential of tomorrow’s fully integrated blast management systems. From the first time blasting was introduced in mining as part of the production process, blasting technology and blast management have been interconnected. Over the past decades we have gained more recent experience with the new electronic blasting systems in mining, quarrying and construction. To start, the primary focus of electronic blasting was to increase timing accuracy. However, since then the technology has gradually developed, broadened and opened up new possibilities, including impressive flexibility in blast design and full in-situ verification of system functionality. To support this capability, modern electronic blasting systems are specifically designed to facilitate full two-way transfer of information between the office-based blast management software and field-hardened equipment. Blast management systems now comprise a suite of expert systems for planning, documentation, analysis, measurement and prediction of blasts. Within this blast management suite, the blast design software allows the transfer of the blast design information from a PC directly to the hardware of the electronic blasting system. The future development of this technology holds huge potential for the blasting industry.

This paper introduces the application of a digital electronic detonator in the demolition blasting of largescale (LS) and long delay time (LDT) frame-shear structure buildings. The whole building to be demolished by blasting is an L-shaped frame shearing structure. Some parts of these buildings have a large length along the direction of collapse, so the detonation delay of the column is longer. To ensure the building is successfully blasted and demolished, a digital electronic detonator detonation system is adopted. In the design of the detonating network, full use is made of these characteristics of the digital electronic detonator, such as flexible installation, high precision of delay before blast, and dedicated testing equipment to check the reliability of the network. These advantages ensure the damage of the load-bearing structure is within the blasting gap and that the accuracy of the collapse time of the building, which not only guarantees the collapse effect of the building, but also provides strong technical support for improving the intrinsic safety of the blasting operation and the supervision of the flow direction of the detonation, these research be provide reference for the application of digital electronic detonators in similar projects.

The City of Fort Myers needed to replace a 40-year old 42-inch storm sewer line in downtown Fort Myers with a new 54-inch line to accommodate population growth. The old line had to be kept operational while a new line was installed. The contractor spent two months using a drop ball, a hoe ram, and large rippers trying to break the three to four feet of rock that needed to be removed to accmmodate the new pipe. Mechanical trenching was considered but was proven to be overly expensive. On very short notice, Ireco of Florida was asked to design and execute a blasting procedure that would allow this project to proceed. Nearby buildings were over 80 years old, three of them containing antique shops specializing in glass antiquities with attorney offices above them. High water table compounded problem with a 20-year old steel water main and clay drainage pipe 15 feet frcan the new sewer line. Holes had to be drilled within six inches of the edge of the existing pipe to four feet below the pipe on either side of the pipe and blasted. No interruption in the sewer line flow was to be tolerated.

In this paper vibratory crack response is compared to that produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils induced by natural events. These natural phenomena include changes in the water table, changes in soil moisture, and formation of ice lenses to name a few. Previous papers have compared vibratory responses of cracks to atmospheric effects such as those produced by the passage of weather fronts and daily changes in temperature and humidity. Periodicity of these atmospheric effects is on the order of a day to half a dozen days. Thus it is possible to observe atmospheric effects with measurement over a period of weeks to several months. On the other hand, crack response produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils occurs over a period of many months and/or may be seasonal in nature if not longer in the case of drought. Thus its measurement requires long periods of observation (many months to significant fractions of a year) or observation during critical seasons. Since it occurs over long periods of time, its observation may be obscured by climatologically induced crack response. These soil volume changes are compared with climatic data to describe the correlative nature of crack response in time with the soil volume change phenomena and likely climatic causes.

This paper introduces the mechanism and the operating process of dike building by silt squeezing blasting. DBSSB (dike building by silt squeezing blasting) has the following advantages: shorter construction period (the construction period is decided only by the speed of rock materials filling)greater consolidation of the body of the dike, more structural stability, smaller settlement. Therefore by conventional standards the same dike can be designed with a smaller cross section than other construction methods, and at a reduced cost when enough rock materials can be provided in site.

Recent developments in the methods of measuring rock motion close to the contour at the moment of blasting have given an improved understanding of the extent of rock damage caused by different charge systems. The paper presents the new results and the methods of prediction of damage zones which are used in Sweden for the design of contour blasting rounds. A survey is given of the tools and the techniques for smooth blasting that are now used on a routine basis in Sweden.
