Operating engineers and mining executives are interested in the science of applied geophysics, but are looking for a simple and understandable exposition of its problems, instead of dissertations which are becoming more and more involved and increasingly difficult to comprehend. It may be well to discuss the goal, the attempted methods of reaching it and the psychological motive, if any, tack of the science. Where does the subject of applied geophysics stand from the viewpoint of (1) the physicist, (2) the mathematician, and (3) the geologist? Fundamentally, the science aims at a differentiation of subterranean geology with the object of finding useful mineral products by the study of gravitational, magnetic, seismic, electric, and other fields which may be associated with the materials naturally or which may be applied to them. The more skillfully these fields are recognized, applied, and analyzed the greater will be the possibility of interpreting results in a way that will be remunerative both economically and scientifically.

Accidents occur when least expected, from sources that we rarely anticipate and with outcomes that can vary greatly. Anyone who has ever been involved in an automobile accident knows, the transition from driving comfortably and safely down a highway to being involved in a potentially life-threatening situation can occur in a heartbeat. Accidents on the job are no different. The mining industry has a relatively small number of electrical injuries, compared to industries such as construction or agriculture, due to the small total employment in mining. Mining does, however, have one of the highest occupational electrocution rates of any U.S. industry, at 2.8 for every 100,000 workers per year. This is approximately four times the average for all industries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) shows that 75 electrical fatalities occurred in the mining industry between 1990 and 1999. Of these, at least 17% involved high-reaching mobile equipment that contacted overhead power lines.

"Putting safety over , " using the accepted meaning of the word " Safety " as the elimination of personal injury , resolves itself into the prevention or disassociation of a combination of two distinct circumstances . Opportunity for accidents is afforded by conditions that are likely to cause injuries , but such injuries are effected only when the human body is placed in a position to be injured . As will be discussed later , in mining , as in most other industries , the degree of safety experienced depends upon the disassociation of these two circumstances , first , by making working conditions as free from hazards as possible , thus affording the minimum opportunity for accidents to occur , and secondly , the training of employees to recognize dangerous conditions and adopt measures to protect themselves and their fellow employees against injury . The responsibility for preventing accidents rests upon every person employed in an industry from the directing head down through the individual workers , and the safety of that industry will be proportionate to the extent that each member appreciates and accepts his individual responsibility . Hence , safety becomes decidedly a personal equation . Whether the personal equation will be so applied as to result in the greatest freedom from accidents , however , depends largely upon the initiative of those directing the industry . Putting safety over in a small mine presents the personal equation in a more intensified manner than the same endeavor in a large mine . Large mines , owing to their size and financial standing, can usually main ta in and support an effective safety organization with one or more directors who devote all their time to the supervision of safety work . Most small mines with a limited number of employees and limited capital can not afford and are not justified in supporting a paid safety organization , and must depend upon the close cooperation of their working force in maintaining safe working conditions . On the other hand , if proper supervision is exercised the small mine has in some respects advantages not afforded by the large mine . The limited workings in a small mine should afford less opportunities for dangerous conditions to arise and permits more frequent inspection of the entire mine . The small working force permits more latitude in the selection of employees known or believed to be either safe workers or amenable to safety educational work. Likewise , a small working force facilitates the carrying on of safety educational work and allows a closer personal contact between the superintendent and his employees .

It would permit coal mines to operate continuously instead of intermittently . Intermittent operation increases the cost per ton for mining , and makes the yearly return to labor low . These conditions contribute to serious instability and unrest in one of the fundamental industries of the country and this can be changed only by coal buyers doing their part to insure steady work . The railroads are now required to transport the maximum amount of coal during the winter months when traffic is most interfered with by bad weather and when the maximum amount of coal is used by the railroads to handle other coal . The railroads now use nearly 30 per cent of the total output of coal . About one- third of their freight traffic is hauling coal , so that economy of fuel used by the railroads will produce a considerable gross saving .

This report covers magnetic field strength measurements vs range and frequency in low-medium coal mines. Both quasi-conductor-free and conductor-proximity areas were investigated. The program covered 5 mines, 4 seams, 6 measurement sets, and 3 geographic areas. The results have been summarized in terms of maximum communication range expected per seam and noise condition. Scatter gain is further explored as a simple measure of energy coupled to conductors.

Vapor-liquid equilibria data for 65-34-1 and 25-27-48 mole percent helium-nitrogen-methane mixtures are presented for 12 temperatures from 76.5° to 164° K and pressures from 100 to 1,200 psia. These data were obtained in a windowed phase equilibria cell equipped with a vapor recirculating pump. Isobaric and isothermal K-values are plotted for both mixtures. Two isometric plots are included.

Pulverized high- volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with oxygen and superheated steam in a pressure - gasification pilot plant equipped for steampickup feeding . The pilot plant operated satisfactorily at relatively high steam- to - coal ratios , but steam- to - coal ratios could not be reduced much below 0.5 lb / lb without condensation of steam or softening of the coal . Carbon gasified , gas composition , and coal and oxygen requirements were essentially the same as for a pilot plant equipped with a fluidized coal feeder . Average results from the pilot plant equipped for steam- pickup feeding were coal requirement , 37.3 lb/M ( 1,000 ) scf of CO + H₂ produced ; oxygen requirement , 358 scf /M scf CO + H₂ produced ; and carbon gasified , 87.7 percent .

Prevent the propagation of a fire and control the spread of smoke and toxic gas in underground mines. Approach A fire door suitable for large openings in underground noncoal mines and providing protection for openings requiring 11/2 hours of fire resistance, a 250°F maximum temperature rise, and high pressure differentials was de-signed, laboratory tested, and in-mine tested. How It Works The door is a double-acting swing type. Its two panels. connected by an overhead linkage, open in opposite directions. Consequently, high pressure differentials across the door have little effect on the force required to open and close the door. The door is constructed of 14-gauge sheet steel skins welded to both sides of a 5-inch-wide steel channel frame. The frame is rein-forced with 5-inch-wide steel channels in a horizontal and diagonal pattern. The voids between the reinforcing members are filled with a ceramic fiber insulation material to limit the surface temperature rise of the unexposed side of the door during a fire. A fire -resistant neoprene-coated fabric is used to seal around the edges of the door panels. The door is opened and closed by an air cylinder, attached to the over-head linkage and operated by lanyards on either side of the door. The door design includes an optional airlock manway for drifts of adequate width.

As part of its program to help decrease the dependency of the United States on foreign imports of nonfuel minerals and to devise technology for the efficient and economic use of domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines smelted and sulfation-leached an ilmenite from northern Minnesota. The objective was to assess the feasibility of preparing chlorination-grade titanium feedstock. The concentrate was smelted with woodchips, coke, and soda ash in 91-kg-and 1-metric ton (mt)-capacity electric arc furnaces to form Ti-rich slag and commercial-grade pig iron. The slag contained from 67 to 77 wt pct titanium oxides and from 1.8 to 7.2 wt pct iron. Sulfation occurred in a 4.5-kg/h moving-bed reactor using S02-air mixtures at temperatures of 8000 to 8500 C to form soluble salts of the Ca, Mg, Mn,and Na impurities, which cause plugging of fluidized-bed chlorinators. Subsequently, the sulfated slag was leached in acid to remove the soluble sulfates. The final product from small-scale testing contained up to 95.5 wt pct Ti02, a minimum of 0.6 wt pct Fe, and a minimum total of 0.3 wt pct of the four impurities of interest. The final product meets charge specifications for chlorination. However, more large-scale testing is necessary.

In 2001, a total of 2,144 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.7% of all mining operations. • Bituminous mines comprised 92.0% (n=1,972) and anthracite mines 8.0% (n=172) of coal mining operations. • More than 71% of coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.5%), West Virginia (21.3%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. In addition to explosion-proof enclosures, the IEC has published recommendations: 1. 79-2 Pressurized Enclosures, 2. 79-3 Intrinsic Safety, 3. 79-5 Sand-Filled Apparatus, 4. 79-6 Oil-Immersed Apparatus, and 5. 79-7 Increased Safety. All these are valid methods of electrical hazard reduction and find wide use in industries other than mining. Magison (52) discusses in detail each technique and, therefore, such an examination will not be repeated. Two other systems, lamina and labyrinth, are but variations of common explosion-proof enclosures and, therefore, will not be cov¬ered. (34,35,46,53,54,61) By examining other national authorities' opinion, the following will investigate each system's applicability to coal mining. Intrinsic safety applies to any system which is incapable of re¬leasing sufficient energy to be an electrical hazard. (49) Not one foreign country contacted disagreed with the concept, and they find these systems totally acceptable. Only South Africa does not accept oil-immersed apparatus, but no reasons were given. (62) Healy (27) stated that Queenlands, Austrailia would accept all techniques, yet some were still to be employed. Japan specifications allow for all but sand filled. (42,43) Increased safety or Protection Type "e" is an approach in hazard reduction in which special design considerations are applied to ensure an extremely low probability of electrical or mechanical breakdown

The coal deposits in Alaska occur in several major coal fields or basins. The deposits underlie about a quarter of the state, an area larger than Montana. Approximately 60 percent of the coal is bituminous and 40 percent is subbituminous. Less than one percent is lignite or anthracite. Although known coal reserves are estimated at only 6.1 billion tons (about 1.25 percent of U.S. reserves), estimates place the hypothetical reserves at 5.5 trillion tons and the identified reserves at 170 billion tons. The differences are due to limited exploration programs within the state. Conditions affecting mining and reclamation are unique to Alaska because of its extreme northern latitude. For example, permafrost occurs in about 75 percent of the state; tundra vegetation occupies vast treeless regions; and the climate is characterized by extremely cold winter weather and a short summer season. In addition, hydrologic conditions are considerably different from those in other states; major streams fed by silt-laden glacial melt water contain greater concentrations of natural sediment than the effluent discharge limits permitted by federal regulations. Also, some coal field locations are subject to potentially high seismic risk. These factors make coal mining and reclamation in Alaska more difficult than in other states. Alaska's program to regulate surface coal mining was approved May 2,1983. The Abandoned Mine Lands program was approved December 23,1983.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

In the early part of the your 1919 the Bureau of Mines undertook a study of methods of handling oil after it had buon produced, with the view of pointing out the losses due to evaporation and other causes. Observations on present methods show that the oil is subject to largo losses in both quantity and quality from the time it loaves tho well until it is recoivod by the pipe-lina company. During this time it is splashed into four or more tanks of various sizes and with little or no protection over the tops. From the settling tank, where the flow of oil is tamporarily stopped in order to permit sparation of ter and sediments, through the gago tanks and leaso gathering tanks to the largo tank storage where it is hold for many days, rich gasoline vapors roadily escape, especially from tho ghor gravity oil. As no effort is made to measure the oil before it reached the storage tanks, where it is delivered to the pipe-line company, the lossos of the light products of the oil can only be approximated, and, as final results will show, are no doubt usually very much underestimated. In conducting this investigation, the Bureau has endeavored to make tests that would show quantities and values lost, in order to impress better upon those concerned what might be saved through a little more diligence. Eperiments were conducted on both California and Mid-Continent oils. The field operimental work done in California, on which a report is to be published in the near future, is cutlined briefly below: The field work consisted in collecting from operating companies data on storage of oils in large tankage and in performing experiments in the field on storing and piping oil to small lease tanks under practical conditions. Acourate Easurements were takon on the volume, gravity and gasoline content of the oil as it passed through the various stages in its removal from the lease. The work extended over the four seasons of the year in order to obtain better the effect of varying winds and high and low atmospheric temperatures during those periods. Thanks are due to the many oil operators who have taken a personal interest in the work and gave valuable information and assistance. One company furnished the oil and tanks and much of the apparatus and labor. This company also per- mitted the work to be done on its properties in the Coalinga field. This was of material aid, as the results were to be comparative and therefore it was necessary that the same gravity oil be used throughout the experiments.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

"To help evaluate the vibration patterns of an excised lung, a method is developed to determine which parts of the surface of an excised lung are responding to acoustic excitation via the trachea. Holographic interferometry, a very' sensitive technique ·that can measure movements of a few microns, is used to detect the lung surface movements.The intact lung and heart are excised from Long· Evans male rats weighing 250 gm. A tube is inserted into the trachea and connected via a funnel to a 3 inch cone speaker. The assembly is positioned in the holographic unit and excited at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The holographic unit contains an acousto-optic shutter used with a 0.5 watt Argon laser.The resulting reconstructed holograms contain interference fringes that are indicated of lung surface vibration.INTRODUCTIONA 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Biomechanics [1] describes diseases of the lung as a major national health problem. One of the recommendations of the report is for continued study of the mechanical properties of lung tissue. As an example, the report cites at least three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns or the lung."

During the spring of 1944, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Crescent mine area near the village of Rewey, Iowa County, Wis., as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program. The Bureau of Mines completed 24 churn-drill holes in an area immediately to the west of a mineralized section which had been mined through shallow workings for lead and zinc more than 40 years earlier.

"The term ""manjak"" is applied to a variety of bitumen or solid hydrocarbon occuring on the Island of Barbados, West Indies, and in Utah, Cuba, and Trinidad. The deposits on the latter island are found within a distance of three miles of San Fernando, the second largest town on the Island, and within three miles of the famous asphalt lake.In chemical composition, manjak is like asphalt. It is almost pure bitumen. Its melting point is, however, more than 4000F. whereas asphalt melts at 1000F. In composition, it consists of 80 to 90 per cent carbon, the balance being chief¬ly hydrogen, with a small quantity of sulfur. It resembles coal in appearance, is odorless, hard, and brittle. It is found in thin beds between layers of clay.The island of Trinidad is rich in this mineral resource. Its development has as yet hardly begun, and the exportations already made have been with the view of testing out the ma-terial. During 1918, exports to the United States were valued at about $3100, and in 1919, up to October 1, they totaled 41 tons, valued at $1900. Prior to 1900, manjak was mined on a small scale in Trinidad, but for various reasons, very little was done between 1900 and 1913. In the latter year, mining operations were resumed by the Trinidad-Tarouba Oil Development Company, of San Fernando. At the present time, there are five shafts, one of which has reached a 37 foot bed of manjak at a depth of 400 feet. Operations could be greatly extended if there were a greater demand for the material.It has not been found profitable to export manjak from Trinidad in the crude state as the price received, namely $35 per ton, hardly covers mining expenses. These are increased by the necessity for careful and thoro timbering on account of the clay formation.Compounds, made by combining manjak with mineral oil command fair local prices which have enabled mine operations to proceed at a profit. Experimentation is still in progress with different mixtures of manjak and oil for various purposes. The manjak, recently sent to the United States was for the purpose of ascertaining whether American oils would be more economical and useful for mixing with the manjak than the Trini¬dad oils. It is the plan to erect a plant very soon for the manufacture of a variety of manjak paints and compounds.Manjak is rapidly increasing in use, particularly in connection with the oil industry. It is produced in close proximity to the oil wells in Trinidad. It is boiled with oils at high temperatures and converted into compounds and paints for nearly every purpose where a preservative is needed, for example, on pipe lines, boilers, chimneys, and miscellaneous iron ware, machinery, etc. It is usually applied in the liquid state, hardening into a tough, rubberlike coating. It has low viscosity, and is not affected by ordinary heat. It makes an excellent insulating material and is impervious to both air and water. In hot and damp climates, like that of Trinidad where pipe lines quickly deteriorate, their life has been pro-longed for extended periods when painted with this material."

Sphalerite crystals occur sparingly in minor faults and pockets in a coarsely crystalline dolomite on the Brown-Tipton farm near Greenville in Greene County, Tenn. After several visits by U. S. Bureau of Mines engineers and U.S. Geological Survey geologists, a survey was r: the in the fall of 1944. Upon their recommendations, trenches on the Brown farm under Bureau of Mines supervision. In each case, the bed most favorable for zinc deposition was exposed. In the finished trench bottoms no zinc minerals are visible.
