"INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A thick-wall cylinder solution applicable to the evaluation of anisotropic elastic parameters is derived for the interpretation of stress relief data. For a restricted class of problems, a special relationship among certain orthotropic moduli yields stress distributions for the plane orthotropic problem that are identical to the corresponding isotropic case. A ring or hollow cylinder with these specialized anisotropic properties subjected to uniform radial loads is one of the problems in this class. Consequently, known stress solutions are used to develop the strains and displacements for a specialized orthotropic thick-wall cylinder under uniform pressures. The results are consistent with anisotropic equations used in the evaluation of in situ rock stresses.

Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In 1981, the combined value of these commodities accounted for about $11.6 million,2 over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially above the 1980 level. Mining bated on gold production was decreasing, and employment in the industry was declining. The better grade deposits in the one active mine were worked out, and only another 10 years' production at current rates was estimated to remain. While the high world gold price of 1979-80 led to intensive exploration, there has been little sum.

Reduce the noise radiated by the auger miner cutting head (typically 105 dBA at the face) by 10 dBA without compromising the durability or productivity of the tool. A joint effort by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), survived the underground environment with regard to both impact damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's from 1982 through 1990. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS). These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform as expected except for units with manufacturing defects or design deficiencies. However, when the apparatus are carried in and out of the mine daily and stored at the working section, they may suffer abuse. Physical signs of abuse, unless extremely obvious, are frequently not detected by the miners or mine operators. This poses a potential danger to a user in an emergency. Recommendations include improved training in inspection procedures.

Provide mine operators with a quick means of identifying the effect of cutting system changes on relative dustiness at the mine face, by developing an interactive computer program for drum-type coal mining machines. Approach A program which simultaneously evaluates machine parameters, coal seam parameters and mine operator-controlled parameters for their effects on relative dustiness has been developed for use on any minicomputer using BASIC computer language. How it works The interactive computer program allows mine operators to make one or more changes at a time to their cutting system to determine how these changes affect relative dustiness of the face. Using this program, mine operators can find the optimum cutting system configuration to minimize dust using their seam conditions and their equipment specifications. The mining machine variables include: number of vane bits, number of gage bits, number of starts, vane wrap, number of end ring lines, rpm, advance rate, ton/min, percentage of time spent cutting per shift, and airflow.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an acoustic test for determining if a rock salt sample is from a "normal" nongassy salt face or from a gassy face where an outburst has the potential to occur. The test is based on the observation that a salt sample taken near an outburst-prone zone produces an audible popping sound when it is dissolved in water. The sound is produced when pressurized gas that is trapped in salt samples is released. In the acoustic test, the sound is electronically measured, digitized, and transmitted to a microcomputer; the output is an average decibel value that classifies the sample as "normal" or "outburst." The acoustic test procedure and equipment are described, and raw test results and data analysis are shown. Results are also shown for several salt samples that were analyzed using a laser Raman microprobe.

To reuse chromium, nickel, and molybdenum now lost in stainless and specialty steel-making wastes, and simultaneously to overcome the current environmental problem resulting from landfilling these wastes. Approach A variety of stainless and specialty steelmaking wastes are agglomerated and recharged into the plant's electric arc furnaces. How It Works Stainless and specialty steel-making wastes such as bag-house dust from the electric arc furnace, dust from the argon-oxygen decarburization unit, grinding swart, and mill scale are blended in proportion to the ratio in which they are generated. Next they are agglomerated on a pelletizer with an addition of a small amount of carbonaceous reducing agent, and air-dried in preparation for being recharged into the furnace. Some mixtures of wastes tested in the laboratory required the addition of binders and/or the use of ovens in lieu of air-drying to produce sufficient pellet strength. Although the optimal maximum particle size of wastes being pelletized is 35 mesh, somewhat larger particle sizes were satisfactorily pelletized during in-plant tests. The photograph shows a typical mixture of wastes and the pellets made from them.

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. At the present time many coal preparation plants handle coal-clay wastes in one of two methods. In one method, the waste is processed in a thickener, followed by further dewatering through filtration, and subsequent blending with coarse waste refuse from the preparation plant. The resulting mixture is then disposed by stacking it in available storage locations. The coal-clay waste is often reslurried by rain or water from other sources, causing a potentially unsafe situation such as mud flows. The other method often used requires thickening and impoundment of the thickened slurry behind earthen dams which poses safety risks if structural failure of the dams occurs. To overcome these two problems, a flocculation method was developed which produces a stable agglomerated material resistant to reslurrying. How It Works The new method involves treating coal-clay waste with lime to raise the pH and flocculating the slurry with a nontoxic polymer of polyethylene oxide. The resulting floes are dewatered on a static screen and agglomerated. For extremely fine waste, further dewatering of the material is accomplished on a rotary trammel screen. The dewatered material may be ponded or mixed with coarse waste from the preparation plant to produce a stable mixture that can be stacked.

Provide guidance on the selection of millisecond initiator delays between blastholes in surface mine blasting to provide a desired degree of rock fragmentation consistent with safety and vibration considerations. The Problem Blasting remains the primary means of fragmenting, rock for all kinds of mining, quarrying, construction, and excavation activities, and it is the only practical and economic method of breaking up and moving large amounts of material such as coal overburden and stone aggregate. Because of the large amount of blasting done, typically using 4 billion pounds of explosive to break about 8 billion tons of rock annually in the United States, a small improvement in blasting performance will have a significant productivity impact. Standard blasting practices involve the selection of time delays in a blast for at [cast three purposes: (1) to control energy flow to minimize adverse vibrations, (2) to provide sufficient time relief for good rock displacement, appropriate muck pile shape for digging, and the prevention of collar violence, misfires, and flyrock, and (3) to provide an appropriate amount of interhole stress wave and gas pressure action for a desired fragmentation size distribution. Timing guidelines that exist are based on subjective observations rather than measurements, even for the relatively new casting methods. Until this Bureau study, no definitive analysis had been done to quantify the fragmentation and productivity of full-scale blast rounds as functions of precision delay timing.

The thermodynamic properites of petalite (Li2A12Si8O20) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydro-fluoric acid solution calorimetry. The values from the elements and from the oxides are ?Hf°298.15 = 2,335.8 ± 3.0 kcal/mole and ?H°295 (from oxides) = -50.60 ± 1.20 kcal/mole. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 10.69 to 302.11 K. The derived standard entropy is S°298.15 = 111.0 ± 1 cal/deg-mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper block calorimetry from 298 K to 1,193.6 K. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of the measurements. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature from the elements and constituent oxides. The Gibbs energy of formation is ?G°f298.15 = 2,203.8 kcal/mole.

The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model that decribes the interaction of an automated breathing and metabolic simulator, or lung, with a self-contained· self-rescuer that is supplied compressed oxygen. The model can be used to predict the gas partial volumes of 0z, Nz, and COz in the lung and in the self-rescuer breathing bag for a prescribed metabolic state that characterizes the lung. Nonlinear rate equations are used to describe the temporal evolution of the gas partial volumes. A numerical procedure was established with a FORTRAN computer program to solve these equations, which correspond to a given metabolic state. Examples are presented of applications of the model to predict bag volume and bag oxygen concentration changes with time when the bag is controlled by an automated breathing simulator. Under certain restrictive conditions, the model equations can also be used to analytically pre-dict the time required for the bag to reach a maximum or minimum volume. The model equation in this latter case was extended to transi-tions between metabolic states, with transitions described as exponential growth or decay processes.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is ordinarily termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also the Ca through Cs paraffins, the Ca and C3 olefins and possibly the C4 and Cs olefins, are byproducts of coal formation. Although it is generally believed that coal formation occurred at temperatures below 200° C, most experimental work on gas formation from coal has been performed at temperatures between 200° and 1,000°C. The objective of this Bureau of Mines experiment was to determine if observable changes in the gases from coal could be produced at temperatures below 200° C in relatively short periods of time. The experiment involved heating coal samples from six coalbeds at constant temperatures and analyzing evolved gases. The composition of the gases at three temperatures was compared. At 35° C, over 99 pet of the gas is methane; at 125° and 150°, methane constitutes approximately half of the hydrocarbon gas. Isobutane and pentane are the predominant higher hydrocarbons at temperatures between 100° and 150° C.

Avoid errors in determining the amount of trace elements in overburden when core drilling samples, particularly as required by PL 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. Reason Metal additives present in certain drill stem joint lubricants appear to contaminate overburden samples. If these lubricants are used in assembling the drill string, they can interfere with the analytical methods used to establish concentration of trace metals. The tables are essentially a retabulation, by countries, of the 53 commodity world tables appearing in the various chapters of this volume. For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. In addition, a few minor geographic areas for which no statistics are available, are also omitted from the tabulation; it is believed that no significant quantities of minerals are mined in any of these areas. The statistics in these tables were derived principally from questionnaires sent, in cooperation with the United States Department of State, to the governments of each country. Approach Replace the flexible-cable or chain-type lower ladder steps, with steps that extend closer to the ground and do not sway when stepped on. Modify dimensions of entire ladder to new industry recommendations. How It Works New lower ladder steps are supported by side pieces made of pretensioned, solid-wound, coil springs fabricated from high strength steel. Unlike conventional crash-resistant steps, which flex or swing freely when stepped on, the spring supported steps can maintain the same inclination as the fixed upper portion of the ladder while supporting an average-weight operator. The steps are also highly resistant to collision damage because they yield on impact if rammed into obstructions such as rocks or berms. See photograph.
