The Bureau of Mines made laboratory batch and small-scale continuous flotation tests of a sample of pegmatite rock from a deposit of the Lithium Corporation of America, Inc., near Kings Mountain, N.C., to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade spodumene concentrates. Various reagents and flotation procedures were tested to determine the optimum conditions for floating the spodumene and retarding the gangue minerals. The best results were obtained when sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate were used as the pulp conditioner and oleic acid was used as the spodumene collector. The continuous flotation tests indicated that commercial-grade. spodumene concentrates analyzing 6.4 pct. Li2O could be produced with recovery of 77 pct. of the lithia in the ore.

Exploration of the Antimony Peak district by the Bureau of Mines was conducted under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. Antimony was one of the seven metals designated at that time as strategic by the Secretaries of War, Navy, and Interior upon advice of the Army and Navy Munitions Board. As a result of many field examinations, the Antimony Peak property was chosen as one of the most attractive for the possible development of emergency antimony reserves. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines began in November 1940 and was concluded in May 1941.

Two self-contained breathing apparatus of the closed-circuit compressed-oxygen type were evaluated for performance at 32° to -25° F. Low-temperature effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration, visual properties of the facepiece, and mechanical operation of the apparatus were studied. Although operation varied with the wearer, his breathing rate, the apparatus precooling time, and the temperature, results suggest that general use of currently approved compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus be limited to temperatures above 32° F.

Preparation of high-purity magnesium-yttrium alloys by electroreduction of Y2O3 dissolved in a YF3-LiF bath and the subsequent deposition of yttrium in a molten magnesium cathode was investigated in laboratory-scale apparatus. Parameters such as temperature, current density, and electrolyte density were studied. Electrolysis was conducted in a specially designed MgO diaphragm cell at temperatures ranging from 780° to 970° C. Alloys containing up to 55 weight-percent yttrium were prepared at cathode current efficiencies of 21 to 60 percent. Cell design and operation are described, and some of the limiting conditions pertaining to the method are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Heats of formation of three crystalline oxides of rhenium (Re02, ReO3 and Re207) have been determined by the method of solution calorimetry, using an aqueous perchloric acid--ceric perchlorate solvent. Copper metal and cupric oxide were utilized as auxiliary substances. Heats were determined at 298' K for the reactions Re + 2CuO = Re02 + 2Cu, Re + 3CuO = ReO3 + 3Cu, and 2Re + 7CuO = Re207 + 7Cu. Standard heats of formation were derived using the value of -37.23 ±0,15 kcal/mole as the heat of formation of CuO. The standard molal heats of formation of the rhenium oxides were determined: Re02, -107.3 ±0.8 kcal; ReO3, -140.8 ±0.9 kcal; and Re207, -301.9 ±1.8 kcal.

Develop a 22-ton capacity temporary mine roof support light enough to be easily lifted and transported manually from one place to another. Approach Several potential approaches were investigated in developing a new temporary support. An all-hydraulic, high-strength aluminum design was chosen as the best. The support was designed, fabricated, and tested in several mines. The first units, built for 6- to 8-foot seam heights, have a load- bearing capacity of 22 tons, and weigh only 55 pounds. How It Works The lightweight hydraulic support is designed for use in any temporary support situation in place of wood posts or steel mechanical or hydraulic supports. This includes use prior to roof bolting in room and pillar mining and in longwall development sections, use as head and tailgate supports for a longwall, and use as turn posts and breaker posts in retreat mining operations. Reduce dust at the auger mine face by modifying airflow patterns, around the minim machine. Approach Limited clearance between an auger miner and the mine root restricts airflow across the face and causes dust rollback. Directional sprays arc used to direct air across the face, thereby reducing dust rollback and increasing dust dilution (fig. 1). Laboratory and underground studies were used to test and optimize effectiveness of the directional sprays. Results of Laboratory Study Laboratory experiments were conducted in a simulated auger gallery equipped with a full-scale mock auger miner and bridge conveyor. A dual curtain configuration was used to direct the, ventilation, which averaged 2,700 cfm throughout the experiment. Testing variables included spray location, pressure, spacing, orientation, and number. Figure 2 shows the optimized directional spray system, also called the auger clearer spray system. The system consists of three sprays mounted alone the intake side of the miner. Sprays arc spaced 16 to 24 inches apart, and angled 30° toward the return side of the miner. The 24-inch spacing moved about 7% more air across the face than the 16-inch spacing; however, it resulted in some additional misting on the return side of the miner. A 30° orientation was more effective than a 60° orientation for moving air across the face and minimizing misting on the return side of the miner. Flat fan sprays arc used because their spray paths arc not obstructed by the top of the miner and mine roof, A 50° fan angle is used to minimize misting on the intake side of the miner.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. "The Bureau of Mines has recorded a number of different background dust sources that significantly contaminated the air breathed by bag machine operators. These background sources, observed at five different plants over the past 2 years, can expose bag machine operators to more significant dust concentrations than the filling process itself. To keep bag operator exposure within acceptable dust levels established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, the significance of these background sources must be realized, and the sources must be identified and controlled. The purpose of this work is to identify common background dust sources and show the significant effects that they have on the bag operator's overall dust exposure. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this report is to identify some common background dust sources in and around the bag-filling area. Although these background dust sources are of ten unrecognized, they can be more significant sources of contamination than the dust generated from the bagging process.The bagging of mineral products into 50- and 100-lb paper bags is common throughout the entire mineral processing industry. Bagging is performed by a bag operator who sits in front of a two- or four-station fill machine. The bagger's function is to attach empty bags to the fill nozzles as filled bags are ejected from the machine. If the product being bagged is extremely fine (smaller than 200 mesh), the bag operator's dust exposure is usually one of the highest in the plant.The bag operator is exposed to two primary dust sources. The first is product blowback during the bag-filling cycle. This occurs as excess pressure is released from around the fill nozzle during filling. As the excess air forces its way out of the bag, product is forced out with it. This blowback of product leaving the bag creates a considerable amount of dust. The second major source is the ""rooster tail"" of product thrown from the bag valve and fill nozzle as the bag is ejected from the fill machine. Since the bag is pressurized as it leaves the machine, product spews out of the valve for a few seconds."

In its search for a highly productive mining system for anthracite beds pitching from 100 to 200, where conventional mobile equipment cannot be used) the Bureau initiated a longwall project by introducing a shearer drum cutter loader of European origin. Because of the undulating nature of the roof and floor and changing bed thicknesses, the machine proved inflexible and extra work was required in lifting bottom coal and blasting top coal.

Graphite in the Suffern deposits near Hillburn, N. Y., consists of flakes ranging in size from fines to one-half inch in diameter. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Suffern deposits in the spring of 1943. Gneiss outcrops were examined, and five trenches excavated and sampled. The graphite is not confined to any definite zone but occurs in small, local pockets. Eleven samples were collected and combined for laboratory tests. Tests by the Bureau of Mines indicate that the graphite ore can be beneficiated by stage crushing, "skin flotation" of coarse flakes, and wet flotation of minus 10-mesh flakes. Over 90, percent of the graphite was recovered.

Bureau of Mines studies show than an electronic counter can be used for determining just concentrations from midget impinger samples collected in bituminous coal mines. A sample correlation coefficient of 0.91 for data obtained using the electronic counter and the Bureau of Mines microprojector procedures indicates a significant linear relationship between the methods. The electronic counter provides better counting precision and reduces analytical time.

During the 12 months ended July 1, 1931, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined electrical equipment in 80 bituminous-coal mines. The purpose of these examinations was to ascertain the condition of such equipment with respect to possible hazards of gas and dust ignitions, also of shock. Although only 3 of the 80 were being worked with open lights and therefore did not use explosion-proof equipment, there were others where electric cap lamps were used by the men but where it was apparently assumed that conditions as to gas and dust did not require equipment designed to give protection against ignitions. Early in its history the United States Bureau of Mines originated certain standards covering the construction and testing of electrical equipment in order to minimize the dangers of ignitions from exposed electric sparks and flashes ; accordingly, it is comparatively easy to determine wherein a machine built to these standards falls short of continuing to meet them if damaged or neglected. Many so-called flame-proof and dust-proof machines, however, have not been built to any standard comparable with that developed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition, certain machines have parts which pass Bureau of Mines tests, but do not satisfy the full requirements in other respects, and others make no pretense of inclosing the spark-producing parts. It is not uncommon to find two or more of these various types in the same mine with " permissible " machines, the type that has been built to conform to the Bureau of Mines standard. Consequently, inspection of nonpermissible machines becomes somewhat difficult without a standard of comparison. Because of its unprotected condition obviously open-type electrical equipment must be used with great care, if at all, in a mine where precautionary measures are adopted in guarding against gas and dust ignition. The unsafe nature of such equipment is widely recognized. For that reason it is to be installed only where there is no likelihood of gas being present. It is not apparent to some, however, why flame-proof and dust-proof equipment and equipment having tested parts should not be regarded in the same light as permissible equipment.

A custom gold and silver plant is one that treats ores for a fee. Usually such plants are located in mining districts and treat local ores. Ores of milling grade generally can stand only moderate transportation charges. These plants are scattered throughout the West. Most plants now doing a custom business originally were built by mining companies to handle ores from their own mires. As excess mill capacity became available ores from neighboring properties were treated, vainly as an accommodation. Later, as their own ore bodies became depleted, the mills were operated entirely on a custom basis. A few plants pull ore from their own mines only when the supply of custom ore is insufficient to keep the mill operating. Some of the present custom plants were built for custom work alone. Although built originally to treat the ores of the Golden Cycle mine, the Golden Cycle plant at Colorado Springs, Colo., soon became a custom mill and has been operating successfully for many years. It is the largest gold mill in the Western States and. treats Cripple Creek ores, from which most of its tonnage still comes. The plant is equipped to treat a great variety of ores and receives shipments from a wide area. It competes with smelters in Colorado, as it has a roasting plant to prepare sulphide concentrates for treatment in its cyanide plant. Most custom mills, however, are not adapted for more than one or two kinds of ore. Gold occurs in its ores both in the metallic state (free) and locked up in sulphides. It also occurs in a few places, notably at Cripple Creek and a few other Colorado districts, as tellurides. Mien the gold occurs in the native state, the ores is said to be free-milling and can be recovered by amalgamation. Usually, however, some subsidiary treatment is required to make a satisfactory extraction. Amalgamation generally was followed by tabling in the earlier mills; at present, flotation has replaced tables at many places. As depth is reached in raining and the workings extend below the oxidized zone the character of the ore usually changes, or, as the miners say, "it gets base". Since the advent of flotation, the average recovery of gold in base ores has been improved-greatly. Cyanidation is applied to some types of both gold and silver ores. The recovery by cyanidation is in general considerably higher than by other methods in vogue and in addition has the advantage of making a finished product which can be sold directly to the mist, thus obviating smelting charges on concentrate and discounts

A study was made of the United States Bureau of Mines' chlorine-oxygen leaching process for complex sulfide concentrates. The investigation sought to determine the kinetic order and IT mechanisms involved in the reactions betweens sphalerite, and galena with chlorine. The influence of copper on the extraction rates was also studied. It has been shown the rates of reaction of chlorine in aqueous solutions with sphalerite and galena are both zero order at 373K with the rate limiting step being the chemical reaction. Addition of cupric chloride increased the extractions of both lead and zinc.

Following a year of great uncertainty, the political situation in Bangladesh improved during 1976. The major problem for Bangladesh remained the high birth rate and crowded conditions. Bangladesh had the highest population density of any agrarian country--over 80 million people in a land area of 144,000 square kilometers, 65% of which is considered arable. The Government, with considerable foreign assistance, was actively encouraging voluntary family planning, and set a growth rate target of 2% per year or less. However, even if the growth rate was reduced to the target level immediately, the population of Bangladesh would nevertheless nearly double within 20 years.
