THIS CHAPTER concerns such minor nonmetals as greensand, meerschaum, mineral wool, staurolite, and wollastonite. GREENSAND Output of greensand (glauconite) was slightly higher than in 1958. Open pits of The Kaylorite Corp. (Calvert County, Md.), National Soil Conservation, Inc. (Burlington County, N.J.), and Inversand Co." (Gloucester County, N.J.) accounted for the entire production. Soil conditioning used about 72 percent of the greensand sold. The remainder was used as a water-softening agent. Prices for greensand, f.o.b. mine, ranged from $13 to $70 per short ton.

Mine closing methods should be carefully considered. If not properly sealed, an abandoned mine may continue to produce acid water. Since 60 to 90 percent of the total acid discharged from all coal mines is from abandoned mines,(58) some states require that provisions for sealing be contained in the mining permit application. Closing an operation to prevent harmful mine drainage into nearby runs and streams is a subject of much concern to states as a result of continuing problems from long abandoned mines which were improperly closed.

During the last week in March and the first week in April, 1973, the Naval Underwater Systems Center measured the 76 Hz magnetic field strength (in Wisconsin and Texas) produced by both the elevated and (newly installed) buried Wisconsin Test Facility (WTF) north-south (NS) antennas. The principle result obtained from these measurements is that there is no measurable difference in performance between the WTF buried and elevated NS antennas.

Detailed mapping and examination of the site of a large rock burst at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, demonstrated conclusively that damage was caused by a splitting and buckling failure mechanism initiated by separation of rock into layers along steeply dipping metamorphic shear foliation subparallel to the affected crosscut. The thin tablular layers then buckled into the crosscut from both sides. Rigorous control of the burst by these layers suggests practical measures for avoiding bursts in crosscuts in the future by repositioning and reorienting openings so that splitting and buckling are reduced or precluded.

Educating the public about the role of mining and minerals can be a challenge. While it sometimes seems that little is being done to counteract negative publicity, there are many exciting things happening across the country that are helping meet this challenge. This paper will discuss existing minerals education activities and will provide tips for developing successful programs for a variety of groups, from students to industry to minerals educators themselves. The paper will also include an overview of the 9th annual National Minerals Education Conference held in July 2000 in Spokane, WA.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

This report describes a study designed to evaluate a proposed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation as performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a "pull test" equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

This paper introduces the fracture mechanics approach—a unique way to predict the stability of a coal mine panel. The technique uses analytic equations to calculate the stress, strain, and yield characteristics of coal support systems. It uses fracture mechanics to model almost every type of mine support structure. Another feature is a method that incorporates field-tested knowledge into the analytical analysis. For example, this technique can model the yield characteristics of a coal seam by combining empirical pillar strength equations into the analytic analysis. It may be possible to simulate multiple-seam mining by incorporating subsidence methods into the analysis. The method is simple and quick, which makes it attractive for stress analysis software. It should be more accessible to those in the mining industry who do not have expertise in rock mechanics or numerical modeling. Although the purpose of this research is for modeling coal mines, it should be adaptable to any mine in a tabular deposit.

The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). The results of tests of hack strength and lifting capacity in these two postures provide useful information to consider in determining the physiological and psychophysical stresses imposed by these

Fire experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, with coal, diesel-fuel, electrical-cable, conveyor-belt, and metal-cutting fire sources to determine the response of fire sensors to products-of-combustion (POC). Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and smoke fire sensors demonstrated an earlier fire detection capability than a CO sensor. This capability was of particular significance for a conveyor-belt fire in which the optical visibility was reduced to 1.52 m with an increase in CO of less than 2 ppm at a distance of 148 m from the fire. Application of a neural-network program to the sensor responses from each type of fire source resulted in correct classifications of coal, diesel-fuel, cable, belt, and metal-cutting combustion with a mean of 96% of the test data correctly classified.

THE VENTILATION SURVEY ON WHICH THIS SIMULATION IS BASED WAS RUN FROM OCT. 27-30 AND ON NOV. 2, 1976 IN THE ACTIVE PORTION OF THE MINE INBY COMBS SHAFT AND THE INACTIVE PORTION AFCUND AND INBY DONAHOO SHAFT. FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS WERE THEN RUN ON FEB. 18 AND FROM MARCH 7-11, 1977 TO INCLUDE THE MAIN HAULAGE SYSTEM OUTBY THE ACTIVE AREAS OF THE MINE. ALL SURVEY DATA WAS NORMALIZED TO A STANDARD DENSITY OF 0.075 POUNDS/CU.FT. PRIOR TO THE CALCULATION OF INPUT PARAMETERS FOR THIS SIMULATION. IN THIS RUN, THE ORIGINAL VENTILATION NETWORK HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE NEW INTAKE AND RETURN AIRSHAFTS AT THE WEST MAINS.

Often a collection of analytical data, which should reasonably be expected to follow the normal distribution, contains too many extreme values, which the experimenter is inclined to eliminate according to some arbitrary procedure. The stepwise computer procedure described for this purpose is similar to many other truncation procedures; however, because truncation of a basically normal distribution causes a downward bias in the estimated variance, this procedure provides a graphical method to compensate for the bias.

Heats of solution of calcium carbon-ate (calcite) and calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined by solution calorimetry. Combination of these two heats yields a value of 42.643±0.024 kcal/mole for the enthalpy of calcination of calcite at 298.15 K. Literature data on ?H°298.15 of calcination of calcite were reviewed and compared. Thermodynamic properties for the calcination process were calculated from 298.15 to 1,500 K using Gibbs energy functions. This research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as an effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

The industrial sand industry has been exploring new techniques to reduce dust. One company was experimenting with adding water during bagging operations to the surface of the hag, and into the product as it flowed into the bag. The Bureau of Mines, using instantaneous dust sampling instruments, measured the effectiveness of three methods of adding water. Results indicated that various types of water sprays applied in carefully controlled amounts could reduce dust up to 50% at worker locations at the bagging machine and inside a railroad boxcar. This report also discusses constraints such as product handling, customer acceptance, cold weather problems, dust collector performance, and other areas.

6.1 Summary This report deals with the investigation carried out to select, test, and implement a method of evaluating coal deposits and reserves. Cognizance is taken of the inherent characteristics of coal and the legislation covering aspects of health, safety, environment, and ecology applicable to the coal mining industry. Further, the method is computerized and provides information that is meaningful and readily available to other programs and sub¬systems within the concept of the Master Design Simulator. The Geology and Reserves Sub-system interface with the total system is provided by a geological data library which is structured to hold and make accessible all the data required by the system. The output from the program is accurate and useful to users with a wide variety of computer experience, knowledge, hardware and storage capacity. The sub-system is designed to function as a separate unit or an integral part of the total system and, there¬fore, an interface to or with the system has been established. General A review of the literature has revealed important areas which should be investigated during the field work. Of the utmost importance is the safety of mine personnel. Should a phase-to-ground fault occur on a shovel or other piece of equipment, current may return to the substation through the machine&apos;s contact surface with the mine floor, thereby raising the frame above ground potential and posing a shock hazard to anyone who touches the equipment. If the frame-to-earth resistance is very low, then no dangerous potentials will be developed, and a basis for elimination of the ground conductors from trailing cables could be postulated. However, should the contact resistance be high, then lethal voltages could be present on the machine frame. In this instance, low-resistance ground conductors in the trailing cable would be a necessity. Therefore, field tests should include measurements of the earth resistance of electrically operated portable or mobile mining equipment such as shovels, draglines, and drills. When the electrical distribution system is subject to lightning discharges, the grounding grid must safely carry to earth and dissipate enormous current surges. It is essential that the grounding grid have a low value of earth resistance, because any potential developed across the grounding grid as a result of current flow will appear on the frames of all machinery connected to the grid. Public interest in atmospheric pollution by automobile exhaust gas and in the ventilation of vehicular tunnels makes it desirable to ascertain whether the use of modern automobile fuels is tending to change the amount and composition of the products of combustion. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Ethyl Gasoline corporation4, has completed a series of testis to determine whether any significant difference exists in the carbon monoxide content of the exhaust gas produced by an internal-combustion engine when its fuel is changed from straight gasoline to the same gasoline containing Ethyl fluid whose active ingredient is tetraethyl lead. In the tests data was sought relative to the composition and mount of the gas produced by ordinary comparatively low-compression motors as well as by higher-compression motors in which distinct detonation occurred with straight gasoline, but which operated without detonation when using the same gasoline containing tetraethyl lead.
