it may be clearly seen that one of the most rapidly increasing items in mining operations is the cost of the timber alone, to say nothing of the cost of installation. Consequently, any practical means that may be used to lengthen the life of mine timber will greatly tend to decrease mining costs and result in important economies in operation. The four principal agents by which mine timbers are destroyed are, decay, insect attack, fire and mechanical abrasion. Decay and insect attack are credited with more than 50 per cent of the total amount of timber destroyed in the mines. Numerous methods may be used to conserve mine timbers, such as better selection, preparation, storage and segregation. It frequently happens that good timber goes into places where poor timber would do as well, and timber of inferior quality is sent into places where only the best grade should be used. However, the most effective method of conservation is by treatment with some standard preservative to prevent decay. Some of. the benefits to be noted from the use of preserved timbers are; the reduction in operating costs by decrease in timber purchases; cuts down interference with mining operations due to timber failures on main haulageways; prevents excessive falling of roof in entries by maintaining timber in sound condition; conserves timber supplies and makes possible the utilization of inferior woods; reduces the danger of mine accidents; improves mine ventilation; lessens fire hazard. Our experience thus far with preservatives, while not of a sufficient period of time to establish just what length of life we may obtain from timber so treated, results obtained during the past four years indicate that the intelligent use of preservatives will effect sufficient economies in mine timber costs to justify the expenditures made for this purpose. MR. BAKER (Concluding): Now, if there are any questions you gentlemen would like to ask about our particular operations, I will attempt to answer them. J. H. EMRICK (Sullivan Machinery Company, Denver, Colo.) ; I was wondering how much penetration you get. MR. BAKER: We get between one-sixteenth and one-eighth of an inch; it is a dipping process. With pressure treatment you get-a greater absorption; that is, better than one-sixteenth of an inch. As long as there is no mechanical abrasion, it seems to serve the purpose. MR. EMRICK: Does that apply to the condition of the timber before it is treated? If it is perfectly dry, will it absorb more treatment than if it is partly green? MR. BAKER: Certainly; one of the things we do is to have it thoroughly seasoned before it is put into the preservative. We put some green timber into the mine once, and the fungus went after it right away. MR. EMRICK: What was the difference in the depth reached by the preservative? MR. BAKER: It hardly penetrated at all when it was green. It has to be sound and well seasoned. MR. EMRICK: How long was the timber dipped or treated? MR. BAKER: According to the seasoning. If it was well seasoned, it was left in the hot bath for an hour; if not so well seasoned, it was left for about a couple of hours. C. M. BILLINGTON (General Superintendent, Rocky Mountain Fuel Company, Lafayette, Colo.): Have you found it necessary to treat timber that has been charred? MR. BAKER: No. However, I suppose it has the sane effect; in lots of places they char timber for the purpose of treatment. MR. BILLINGTON: Have you ever tried lime and salt? MR. BAKER: No, this is the only thing we have tried, the creosote and the Aczol; the Aczol is a foreign product. WM. LITTLEJOHN: Which I is preferable, the Aczol or the creosote? MR. BAKER: I couldn't say as to that. MR. LITTLEJOHN: Have you had any tests as to the value of either? MR. BAKER: We have had some of the Aczol timbers in service for a little over four years; we have had some creosote timbers in service

I read a book the other day called Opportunity 2000. The book, Opportunity 2000, talks about what's going to happen in the next nine or ten years as we propel ourselves through the 1990s into the 219 century. The book, Opportunity 2000, is a futuristic book, somewhat like Megatrends. It said that by the year 2000, baby boomers will be old people, and when you got here before the baby boomers, how does that make you feel? It said that there will be more women in the American work place by the year 2000 than men. The book, Opportunity 2000, discusses diversity. The big challenge for the 1990s is ?diversity?. We'll have the D-word in the 1990s. We had the G-word in the 1980s ? ?global.? Diversity in terms of more immigrants, more minorities, more females into the American work place, but also value systems diversity. We'll have to deal and adapt to four different generational clusters in dealing and interacting with employees and management in the 1990s-value systems diversity. In the current issue of Link-Belt News is this quotation: "Advancing waves of other people's progress sweep over the unchanging man and wash him out." As we look over the industrial world today we are struck by the many waves which are sweeping over backward industries. Mergers are being consummated in all lines of endeavor. General Motors are making radios and the Bendix Brake Company are making airplanes. Railroads which twenty years ago were called to account by the Federal Government for their efforts to form combinations are today being ordered to combine. But what is of immediate concern to the coal industry is the fact that there is now in existence or in project a total of 3,641 miles of pipe lines to carry natural gas to most of the country's industrial centers. This is the wave of progress which is sweeping toward you and me. If we are to grasp the significance of these many changes, we must widen our vision so that we may learn some- thing from 'the other fellow's experience. The first lesson is that cost of production alone is not a measure of profit. It is an interesting fact that the production of an article represents a definite loss until that article has been sold for a price in excess of its total cost, and the money is in the hands of the producer. If this is true, then the selling price is more important than the production cost.

The Annual Business Meeting of the members of The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute held during he 84th Regular Meeting of the Institute was called to order by the president, H. Dean Jacot at 11:30 a.m Tuesday, June 28. 1988 in Peak Room 5 of Beaver Run Resort at Breckenridge, Colorado. Twenty three were present and a quorum was established. The president stated the purpose of the annual meeting is to inform members of the status of the affairs and activities of the corporation during the year. It was moved by Loren Linville, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of the previous meeting as published in the 1987 Proceedings. The chair called for reports of the various com¬mittees and these reports will he placed on file in the RMCMI office. Bylaws and Resolutions. Chairman Loren V. Linville reported there were no bylaws revisions. He further reported that the Board had adopted two resolutions: (I) Noting the passing of members since the last convention-Richard T. Brownrigg. Don A Dewey, John T. Maulshy. Hugh D. Nyquist and Mike Zakotnik. (2) Recognizing the superior skills of J. Brett Harvey. RMCMI Vice President of Utah. For recruiting 26 new members from the State of Utah and named him as #1 Recruiter in the Institute?s 1988 membership drive. Linville further commended the Executive Secretary officers, chairmen and committees loran excellent job in planning the 84th Regular Meeting and convention. Membership. In the absence of chairman Ed Sullivan. the secretary reported there are currently 718 active or dues paying members, 51 Life Members and 250 delinquent in dues payment. In the 1988 membership drive. 132 new members have been recruited and 74 of them attended this convention making up 27V, of the total attendance. Patrons of the Institute. This report was given by the secretary for chairman Ira McKeever. A total of 124 plaques has been prepared during the low year life of the program. It has been culled to 119 possible donors as some firms have gone out of business or consolidated. Of this number 46 renewed their annual $100 donation and three new Patrons have joined prior to the convention for a total of 49. During the convention. four new Patrons donated $100 each. tour former Patrons pledged $100 each and seven would be-new Patrons pledged $100 each for a total of 15. This would bring the grand total to 64 if all pledges are received prior to the close of this fiscal year as opposed to 59 renewals in 1987. Program. Co-Chairman Pete Nielsen announced the convention program theme "Broadening OUR Horizons" was well received despite the loss of three speakers during the final days prior to convention. Because the remarks of the Monday luncheon keynote speaker ran over the first time-to-be-tried Monday afternoon Poster Session was delayed almost an hour in beginning. This well thought out feature will he run again next year but in a different time frame. Nielsen thanked his co-chairmen, Bill Balaz and the Poster Session chairman Marcie Greenberg. Publicity. Chairman Tom Egan reported three newsletters including the convention newspaper were sent members during the year. He and Bob Jacob of Bob Jacob Public Relations were at registration daily to secure business card ads and to solicit advertising for the Proceedings. Scholarship. Chairman Keith McGinnis reported that six of the seven scholarship recipients were present at the convention. The University of Arizona at Tucson was added this year and it was the only university visited this year by the chairman. Each scholarship recipient was introduced to the membership at the Monday morning Welcome Session, presented a plaque and responded. The input Iron each winner was most favorable to the program. Each was appreciative of the many contacts made and the educational seminars and programs. McGinnis noted that the mining engineering department at the University of Wyoming may be dropped during the coming year. Joe Dunlap suggested that every member rally support of this department. The first session of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order by John T. Maulsby, Superintendent of Maintenance and Planning, Columbia-Geneva Steel Division, U. S. Steel Corporation, Dragerton, Utah, representing the past-president. W. K. Dennison, Jr., Superintendent. Koehler line. Kaiser Steel Corporation. Raton, New Mexico, who was unable to attend. Mr. Maulsby welcomed the members and guests, and introduced the President, A. Z. Dimitroff, Mining Electrical Engineer, Health and Safety, District 1-L, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Denver. Colorado. The text of President Dimitroff's address of welcome is as follows: The President's Remarks Guests and Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: The distinct honor and privilege of officially welcoming you to this, the fifty-seventh regular meeting of the Institute, is indeed a pleasure. Your officers and committees have tried to provide a varied program which I am sure should have something of interest to all of us. The theme of this meeting, "Where Do We Go From here'?", appeared rather fitting for the In¬stitute this year because, as most of you know, until only two weeks ago we thought that this is the last time we will be able to meet at the Colorado Hotel, which has been the favorite spot of most members. President Loren V. Linville opened the meeting at 930 a.m. He called on the Auditing Committee to give its report. Bob Wilson, Chairman, read the report and asked that it be approved. A motion was made, seconded and carried. The Resolutions Committee was asked to present its report. PRESIDENT PRYDE: I am sure we have all listened with interest to the presentation of this subject. Anything that promises economy in coal mining today is welcomed by all of us. We will now have a discussion on this paper. If any of you gentlemen want to ask any questions, you may do so. I think we will develop something of interest and along the lines of economy. That is the first consideration of a coal mining man. MR. H. D. RANDALL: It is an interesting fact that in manufacturing we find the greatest economy results from giving a man the simplest possible act to perform, while there is nothing too complicated for a machine. If we want to put up a set screw we find it cheaper to let one man set it up and the other screw it in. The maximum economy is what we are after. Similarly, one of the points of greatest interest which Mr. Ickis has emphasized, is that this automatic equipment not merely dispenses with a manual operator, but also performs certain functions which the operator cannot do. It provides an inherent protection to the apparatus and service not possible under manual operation. We very rarely have cases of failure with these automatic equipments, .and consequently have the advantage not only of having eliminated the operator's salary, but also his mistakes. We have had a large number of these equipments in use for several years, so that their practicality is now thoroughly proven, and the trend of practice now indicates that the automatic idea will be further extended and will become universal for such classes of service. MR. D. C. McKEEHAN (Union Pacific Coal Company) : My notion of an automatic sub-station is one that does not necessarily require new equipment beyond the control equipment; so that any of you that are interested in it can take up with the manufacturers and find out how much it would cost to change any equipment. The greatest point I think is the fact it eliminates the several nationalities from operating the set, either on day shift or night shift. They can so lock the control as to make it impossible for anyone to start or stop it, except the one who has the authority. Another point I do not believe was brought out very clearly: It would be particularly advantageous to people who buy power, and if you could have several sets in parallel, it would allow you to start the shift with one set and cut in the additional sets as the shift progresses. There are various operations that stop at the end of each shift, and-one or two or three sets can be cut out, leaving the load on one set, providing the size of the copper is sufficient to supply all the points of the mine. Another point I want to bring out: In case you have quite a number of sets distributed along transmission line, the switch trips, the operation restores the service, and you may have several hundred-or in case with us, we would have several thousand-K. V. A. of Motor Generator Sets and Rotaries, that would be starting at once, and the switch would automatically trip out again. MR. RANDALL: Another form of control was described as the so-called supervisory control. This control could be started up so the starting would not be synchronous, but could be spread out over a sequence. MR. McKEEHAN: I think that is rather a theoretical consideration for coal miners. They are standing at the controller ready to shut it off unless there is some selective method of starting various sets- MR. RANDALL: I had in mind this supervisory control, one man, a central operator who would determine which station should start and he would take time enough to have his load come on gradually. He would not permit all the installations to come on simultaneously, but come on in succession: MR. McKEEHAN: You misunderstand me. The 81 st Regular Meeting and convention was called to order by the President, Charles W. Margolf at 9:00 a.m. Monday, July l, 1985 in the Silverton Room of Tamarron, a resort hotel near Durango, Colorado. President Margolf welcomed the members and others in attendance to the convention and noted his theme of "Make It Happen!" He introduced those present of the 1985-86 Board of Directors and Officers who were elected by the Board of Directors at their Annual Meeting June 29. They were: Arthur K. Neill, President; Bernard Bernstrom, President-Elect; Loren V. Linville, Convention Liaison Officer; Vice Presidents Douglas J. Hammer of Colorado, C. Joe Presley of Montana, Alva L. Smith of New Mexico, Fred Wertz of North Dakota, Rex Berry of Utah and Thomas J. Lien of Wyoming; and Doris G. Finnie, Executive Secretary & Treasurer. He also introduced Ira. E. McKeever who was elected to serve as chairman of the Advisory Board by that group. PRESIDENT MARKS: We have a letter from Mr. Frank N. Cameron, of the Utah Fuel Company, that perhaps I had better read to you. It is addressed to Mr. Shubart, Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (hands letter to Secretary Shubart). UTAH FUEL COMPANY MINE SUPERINTENDENT Castle Gate, Utah, February 9, 1926 Mr. F. N. Cameron, Vice-President & General Manager, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Sir: It has now been about nine months since we started the system of having the fire bosses take charge of all shooting and gas inspections at the Castle Gate Mines. We had considerable trouble when we started. Like all other new systems which have been installed, this one was hard to get started and was criticised both by the miners and officials in our own organization, as well as by other organizations in the mines of this county. The older the official and miner was the stronger they seemed to be opposed to the new method. They have no arguments to offer against it, but they know it is not right "because their grandfather did not work it in that way." We know that when some of the other systems were started in the mines of this county, they were fought from all angles. The electrical shooting almost brought the miners at Sunnyside out on strike; their main argument was that they could not make a living if they had to obey the rules that the company was trying to enforce. They also claimed that they could not make enough coal for the day's work by only shooting once at the end of the shift. The same applies to the sprinkling the miners claimed that they would all die of some disease if they were forced to work in a sloppy, wet mine every day. The mining machine was another thing that was hard to install the miners claimed that the company was trying to rob the Door miner out of a chance to make living by installing mining machines to cut the coal. I do not think that the system we have at our mines is perfect-there is still room for improvement in the shooting and inspection of the mines, but I do really think that for safety and efficiency, the inspection department at our mines, working under the new system, is as good if not better than any other inspection department working under the old method in the other mines. I am giving some of the arguments in favor of the new system and would like to hear the arguments against it-if there are any. In cutting the men from monthly to day wages, I do not think it is only the company that benefits by the arrangement, but the fireboss is the one that gets the best of it by the change. How often have we heard the fireboss complain of the hours he had to put in just because he was a monthly man? Under the new wage scale he is paid for every hour he puts in the mines, and when the mines are working every day he makes considerable more than when he was being paid a monthly salary. When the mines are working slow, there is generally some work that has to be done on idle days, or in slow times the force could be cut to a point where some of the work could be done on idle days, and thus the fireboss could be given the preference in this extra work and in this way, his wage could be kept up to the standard monthly salary he was getting before.
