A new method developed for the estimation of the activity of Ht in mixed sulfate solutions is described and examples of application of this method to the system H2SO4-ZnSO4-FeSO4-Fe2(SO4)3 from 298 to 473 K are offered. The method makes use of an "extended Debye-Hiickel" type of equation that was originally put forth by Das for pure H2SO4 solutions at ambient temperature. The treatment of mixed sulfate solutions was made possible by combining that equation of Das with a speciation algorithm which calculates the abundance of all species formed. The developed method, which also takes into account ionic strength and temperature effects, was used to generate hydrogen ion activity and speciation data for all possible acid/metal sulfate pairs of the system H2SO4-ZnSO4-FeSO4-Fe2(SO4)3. Finally, under the light of the reported data, specific examples of hydrometallurgical reaction systems are analyzed in terms of thermodynamics or kinetics. In particular, the systems discussed are: hydrometallurgical precipitation of hematite, solvent extraction of Fe(III), acid leaching of zinc ferrite, and oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) by O2(aq).

Flow in heaps and dumps is a two-phase flow phenomenon, though for many applications it could be simplified as unsaturated flow. Unlike saturated flow (typical of ground water flow), where permeability is independent of other hydraulic parameters, unsaturated flow permeability depends on the degree of saturation and/or on capillary pressure. Several recent field studies suggest that flows in heaps and dumps tend to concentrate in preferred pathways, bypassing much of the ore. Different preferential flow phenomena are triggered, promoted and influenced by different heap structures, by pretreatment, by the composition of the leach solution and by application rates and schedules. The structure of heaps and dumps is determined and affected by every stage of their construction -from blasting to crushing to conveying and stacking of the material. History of heap construction and operation combined with monitoring, mapping and certain field tests can reveal patterns of flow and transport in a given heap and can shed light on the physical mechanisms behind it. Such insight can provide a first cut on heap leaching enhancement by either eliminating or bypassing physical barriers to flow and leaching. Based on the understanding of the heap structure, advanced flow and transport models can be constructed and further enhance the insight. This insight is essential for understanding cause and effect and can provide a basis for decision making. Further, based on the physically-based models, an intelligent control agent, such as MRDS1, can learn and build a self-learning representation (or a model) of the complex heap leaching system, followed by dynamic optimization and planning of heap leaching and heap rinsing.

The opencast lignite mines in the Rhinel and Di strict/Germany are equipped with the continuously operating bucket-wheel excavator - conveyor - spreader system. High productivity requires large capital expenditure on main mine equipment as a precondition for efficient mining. In operation, the technology employed leads to a particular cost pattern which is quite different from that of other industries. Labour, auxiliary equipment and mobile vehicles are the most important cost factors which can be controlled by the management. In this respect information processing computer systems are used for systematical and interpretable representation of operational tasks and jobs both in planning and work preparation and in recording the operational data describing the work result and the use of resources. Another aim of the project is to relieve the middle management of major part of its administrative routine work. Job-related work planning and data recording open up various possibilities of analyzing the operational procedures. This analysis shows, for example, what auxiliary machines are particularly suitable for specific tasks, and working groups can be organized so as to take account of the different skills of individual employees for the sake of an optimal work product. Computerized information processing provides the decision makers with topical information related to their respective responsibilities. The mining department of the Hambach opencast mine is the first user of the PERMAD system. Due to the favorable evaluation it has been decided to introduce PERMAD in three other mines in the course of 1992/93.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. This paper deals with theoretical considerations and practical applications of ventilation network calculations, based on mass flow rates and performed by computer simulation in our deepest operating mine - Creighton. The paper also deals with natural ventilation. In the usually accepted air-flow theory, the air is assumed to behave like an incompresssible medium. This introduces considerable error where temperature and pressure changes are great. Therefore, any study of the air flow in deep mines, must take into account compressibility. Basing ventilation calculations on mass flow allows a distinction to be made between air leakage and such quantity changes which occur due to air density changes. The energy which is required to convey one pound of air through a mine can be obtained by adding all head losses hL (ft-lb) of the ventilation paths through which the air flows. However, this total energy will not be correctly expressed in a compressible fluid by summing all pressure losses PL = hL x d (ft-lb/ft3 = lb/ft2) d = density. There is a law of mass conservation, but no law of volume conservation. Natural ventilation is caused by the conversion of heat into mechanical energy and not by the difference in upcast and downcast densities, as often believed. In an existing mine natural ventilation can be determined correctly by plotting a pressure volume diagram and measuring the area ? [ ] vdP = hN, where v = specific volume, or by measuring the sum of all friction losses and work provided by a fan. These procedures are tedious. The natural ventilation head (hN) can be approximated by the equaticn hN =[ ] tdZ. Where T is the average absolute temperature, t air temperature and Z elevation. In Prof. R. Greuer's computer program this determination of hN is automatically done for every mesh of the network.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to describe in engineering terms the singular and basic operational kinematics of all excavating and bulk handling equipment. The safe and efficient use of equipment will be fostered by enabling the engineer to conceptually duplicate the operators' "tasks" in directing and controlling it. A simple graphical and notational scheme will be introduced to define the essential gross repetitive motions. The significance of this effort includes filling a vital analytical gap at the work face, and in establishing direct communications between the engineer and equipment operator. Since all types and sizes of earth- moving equipment are covered, a major concern has been to integrate equipment specialties into d single encompassing discipline. Equipment types are closely related to the working conditions, and their selection and evaluation are also considered. The extension to human factors analysis is natural and predictable. Since human [actors are involved, the operational analysis can also be considered a catch-all for many subtle vagaries. BACKGROUND Symbolic modelling linked to a notational system will be developed and intensively used. This constitutes the "language of science," providing a shorthand method which gives immediate recognition, is fluent, explicit, reinforcing, unequivocal and provides limitless associations. Many examples of symbolic modelling exist in chemistry, physics, the military, engineering sciences and it is a major tool in mapping. Its use is so ubiquitous that it often goes unnoticed. On the other hand it must be realized that something is lost in simplifying and idealizing what is an extraordinarily complex occurrence. The components describing the basic operational kinematics of equipment include: (1) the vehicular motions as a rigid body and (2) the job-end motions focussing on excavating (Adler, 1985). These provide all of the components in the load-haul-dump sequence (L-H-D) , and will yield three dimensional expressions. Complex patterns can also be assembled from these simple elements. An existing equipment designation employed in earthmoving will be integrated into this approach (Carson, 1961). Along with the basic motions, corresponding working conditions will be noted.

The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. Several of the teachers at Belmont remained good friends as long as we were on the same side of the continent. The finest was C.H. Decision-making in exploration deals with experience, knowledge, and sometimes faith, but very often financing and profit, mineral resource aspects, employment, and general political ambitions are parts of the scene. At one end of this spectrum, there is the prospector and his decision on the actual project. The exploration business now expands from its pioneering phase for the benefit of a single company to a wider spectrum which includes the benefit of the large mining consortium and a national development program. Its objectives are also to maintain employment and to favor long-term stability in a mining district or a mining company. The prospector then has new aspects and questions to consider such as, what to do in mining districts where there is a shortage of ore resources but there are still useful investments in mines, processing plants, etc. To analyze the exploration process, therefore, seems to be of great importance in a time of rapidly changing conditions. As in other areas of complex decision-making, for example, in the fields of investments, of production, and of the armed forces, computers most certainly have an important role to play in future exploration decision-making systems. However, we must first analyze our own business as closely as possible to find out what kind of information we need, i.e., why we recommend an exploration program as a good or a poor one. An important part of the debate about exploration is the case study. Case studies on exploration are few and most of those written are only about successful exploration programs. Where are the case studies of the failures and the not so successful programs? Every prospector knows that the majority of exploration projects fail. Consequently, the most important experience seems to be hidden in the failures.

9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. The outlook for coal continued to improve in 1980, fueling expectations that a long-awaited boom is at hand. The surprising surge in coal exports contributed to the latest wave of optimism. Overseas exports hit 66 Mt in 1980, buoyed by a significant increase in demand for steam coal, up from 1979's 2.3 Mt to 15 Mt in 1980. US coal production rose 6.9% to 750 Mt in 1980 and total coal consumption increased 8.1% to about 725 Mt, due primarily to higher world oil prices and setbacks in the US nuclear power industry. Yet the industry is beset with problems-both internal and external. Although demand for US coal is growing, the industry's excess productive capacity is estimated at over 90 Mt/a. Public utilities, where real increases in coal consumption must come, are still moving slowly, blaming delays on antipollution equipment costs. Coal supplies are uncertain, subject to the vagaries of the UMW. For the sixth time since 1964, the coal industry and UMW failed to renew their labor contract without a national strike, reinforcing the perception held overseas that the US is not a reliable supplier. The expected boom in coal exports will, in part, depend on our ability to assure foreign buyers that US sources are dependable. The US industry is also plagued by inadequate facilities linking mines and consumers: inadequate rail systems, coal ports, and barges, For US producers to be competitive, ports must be expanded, rail lines improved, and harbors dredged to allow 136-kt ships to load coal. The im¬provements will require an enormous commitment and investment. Despite these major problems and unresolved issues, two factors continue to favor an increased reliance on coal as an energy source: abundant US reserves and coal's comparative price advantage. Coal's performance in the 1980s may at last exceed its promise.

INTRODUCTION The Ningyo-toge Mine is located in the western part of Honshu, about 800 km from Tokyo. Since the discovery of uranium ore deposit at Ningyo-toge in 1955, different kinds of mining and milling tests have been carried out. A new pilot plant of milling and UF6 conversion is also being under construction. Operations are scheduled to start by the end of this year. In 1979, the uranium enrichment pilot plant was constructed at Ningyo-toge and test operations have started. Thus, the Ningyo-toge area is assigned to undertake the Research and Development of the upstream of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan. PNC has been strengthening its security measures more than ever. This paper will focus on the disposal of wasted material, especially on the disposal of heap leaching residue, in Japan. URANIUM ORE DEPOSITS The uranium of the Ningyo-toge Mine is characterized genetically by epigenetic sedimentary type deposits. They occur in the host rock of Neogene tertiary fluviatile conglomerates and sandstones which unconformably overlies the Mesozoic-Palaeogene granitic basement covered with lucustrine deposits and volcanic ejecta. More than 12 deposits have been found over the area of approximately 160 km2, and distribution of the deposits are strongly controlled by the so-called channel structure, probably remnants of paleo-streams on the denudation surface of the underlying grantic basement. Each ore body has different shape and dimension respectively, but about 2-3 meters thickness with the average grade of 0.05-0.2% U308 is common feature of the ore bodies. The ore is soft and loose, and it is composed of common rock forming minerals of allogenic origin and their altered products. The chemical composition of the ore depends on the constituents of the country rocks or the pebbles. A primary mineral, ningyoite and secondary mineral, autunite are major ore minerals, although three primary tetravalent minerals and thirteen secondary hexavalent minerals have also been detected. MINING EXPERIMENT Since 1959, various types of underground mining tests have been carried out at Ningyo-toge Mine. The room and pillar method was safe and simple, although the uranium ore recovery was below 70%. After experiment of the retreating long-wall method and slicing mining method, it was found that the modified long wall method was the most appropriate for the underground mining of the Ningyo-toge uranium deposits. This method was completed successfully to increase efficiency up to 2 or 3 times, as compared to conventional methods. MILLING EXPERIMENT In 1964, a small test mill was constructed at Ningyo-toge, and a milling experiment using the Ningyo-toge uranium ore was started. Re-modelling of equipments and improvement of the process lead to the establishment of the technique of the so-called wet process, and produce UF4 directly from the ore. The flow diagram is shown in Fig. 1.

Of the six forms of asbestos, only three have been used to any significant extent in commerce. These are chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite. Between 1870 and 1980, approximately 100 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide, of which more than 90 million tonnes was the chrysotile variety, about 2.7 million tonnes the crocidolite variety, and about 2.2 million tonnes the amosite variety. The three principal diseases related to asbestos exposure are (1) lung cancer, (2) cancer of the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mesothelioma), and (3) asbestosis, a condition in which the lung tissue becomes fibrous and thus loses its ability to function. These diseases, however, are not equally prevalent in the various groups of asbestos workers that have been studied: the amount and type of disease depend on the duration of exposure, the intensity of exposure, and particularly, the type or types of asbestos to which the individual has been exposed. Lung cancer is caused by exposure to chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos; however, increased risk of this disease is usually found only in those who also smoke. Asbestosis is caused by prolonged exposure to all forms of asbestos, whereas mesothelioma is principally caused by exposure to crocidolite asbestos. There is good evidence that chrysotile asbestos does not cause any significant amount of mesothelioma mortality, even after very heavy exposure. The common nonasbestiform amphibole minerals, cummingtonite, grunerite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, which are often defined as "asbestos" for regulatory purposes, have not been shown to cause disease in miners. Chrysotile asbestos, which accounts for about 95 percent of the asbestos used in the United States, has been shown by extensive Canadian studies to be safe when exposures do not exceed 1 fiber per cm3 for the working lifetime. Chrysotile dust levels found in buildings rarely exceed 0.001 fibers per cm3. Such dust concentrations will have no measurable health effect on the building occupants. Present and future controls of minerals defined as "asbestos" and removal of asbestos from buildings and homes may cost many billions of dollars. Much of this expense is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Asbestos abatement could in fact produce a health risk to those exposed to dusts during and after removal operations overly restrictive controls could force the use of poor or dangerous substitutes, and could greatly affect the hard-rock mining industry.

This chrysotile asbestos ore body is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 miles) north of Montreal, 480 km (300 miles) north of the tree line, and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1% mile) in length, some 61 m (2OO ft) in width and plunges at 25o to 30 o below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The ore body was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling, and bulk sampling. The fiber is semicrude, possesses excellent strength, and good fiber length distribution. GEOLOGICAL SETTING, LOCATION, AND DISCOVERY The chrysotile asbestos mineralization at the Asbestos Hill mine occurs in serpentinized ultrabasic rocks of Precambrian age. These intrusive rocks are found in older volcanic sedimentary rocks known as the Cape Smith-Wakeham Bay belt and are shown in Fig. 1. The rocks comprising this belt overlie older basement rocks composed of granite and granite gneiss. This belt has a width of 32 to 64 km (20 to 40 miles), and trends in a general east- west direction, a distance of about 370 km (230 miles) from Wakeham Bay on the east coast of the Ungava Peninsula to Cape Smith, located on the east side of Hudson Bay. Two sequences of rock have been recognized in this belt. The lower (oldest) rocks are known as the Povungnituk group, and consist principally of massive lavas and sediments. The upper (younger) rocks are known as the Chukotat group, and are composed of pillowed lavas with interbedded sedimentary rocks. Sills of ultrabasic rocks exist in both younger and older rocks, but are more often found in the Povungnituk group. Concentrations of chrysotile asbestos, as well as nickel and copper minerals are found at or near the base of ultrabasic sills, and are most common where a change in dip occurs. The mine is situated about 1818 km (1130 miles) north of Montreal, approximately 1126 km (700 miles) north of the start of continuous permafrost, and about 482 km (300 miles) north of the tree line. The depth of permafrost at the mine site has been calculated to be approximately 549 m (1800 ft). This rich deposit of asbestos was discovered in 1957 during extensive exploration for nickel in the Ungava nickel belt. During that year, traverses conducted by Murray Watts spotted interesting looking ultrabasic rocks, and followup ground examination disclosed rich surface showings of asbestos mineralization near the present open pit. After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. Before resuming his position as general manager of Calumet and Arizona and New Cornelia, Greenway must recover from the effects of the gas he had suffered in the war. Dr. Ricketts

Boling Dome. a piercement salt dome in the Texas Gulf Coast basin is (was) the single largest deposit of native sulfur in the Western world. Total sulfur production has been over 81.000,000 long tons and the mine is still in production. Data from over 60 years of operation and 8.000+ wells reveal a salt dome rich in history as well as minerals. Sulfur mineralization and production correlate well with caprock structure and morphology. The occurrence of Mississippi Valley-type deposits in fracture zones is notable in some areas and may warrant additional study. DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION HISTORY Boling Dome is located in the south- east corner of Wharton County, Texas, 60 miles south-west of Houston. It is a piercement type dome in the Houston diapir province. It was discovered in 1922 when the county surveyor noticed sour gas seeps along the San Bernard River (Haynes. 1942). Several companies including Gulf Production Company. Humble, Texas Company, Sun and others quickly began drilling for oil and gas. Traces of native sulfur were reported in cuttings from many wells penetrating the caprock, but the first commercial quantities of sulfur were not found until Gulf Production's E.M. Chase 3 and 4 wells were drilled in 1927. Texas Gulf Sulphur, then mining sulfur at Gulf Dome in Matagorda County, secured the sulfur rights from Gulf for $3 million in cash and half of the profits after expenses for development and construction of plant and townsite were met (Haynes, 1942). The drilling results from 200 or so Wells revealed a massive deposit destined to become the largest single source of native sulfur in North America. Original reserves were estimated at just over 46 million long tons and were increased in later years. Production by the Frasch method was begun by Union Sulphur in 1928, and continued by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in 1929, and Duval Sulphur Co. and the Baker Williams Co. in 1935. Union produced 8,009 long tons, Duval produced 571,123 long tons, and Baker Williams produced 1,453 long tons. Through its deal with Gulf, Texasgulf acquired the largest and best mineralized portion of the dome and has produced 88,544,466 long tons through 1990, and production is planned for several more years. That amount of sulfur is equivalent to a cube measuring 1,152 feet on each side, or a sulfur highway 1 foot thick, 20 feet wide and 14,479 miles long. Peak production averaged 8,376 ltpd in 1948. A price war between North American sulfur producers and Mexican sulfur producers in 1956, followed by the recession of 1957 and 1958 (Haynes, 1959) coupled with a rapid increase in mining depth to below 700 feet began a gradual production decline that was never reversed (Figures 1 and 2).

Introduction It is now believed that, even with the environmental protection measures now being taken, the further application of traditional coal-mining and electric power-generation technologies will inevitably cause further irreversible damage to the global ecosystem. Further improvements in conventional coal-mining technologies, both surface and underground, are expected to have only limited impacts on the economical, ecological and social aspects of coal mining. In countries with a developed coal industry, coal reserves with favorable conditions at shallow depths are rapidly being depleted. Therefore, in the future, more coal will be mined from deeper levels, resulting in higher operational costs and lower labor productivity. The solution to this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing unconventional coal-mining and advanced clean-coal technologies. This paper presents an unconventional concept that has been suggested by the authors. The basic goal is to achieve coal-methane energy resource conservation and to remove barriers to energy efficiency through the adoption of integrated, ecologically clean, innovative technology. The following principles form the foundation of this concept: Energy resource conservation: This principle concerns the exploitation of actual and potential coal-methane reserves in the most effective way with the lowest possible losses and with the application of the most energy-efficient electric power-generation technology. Energy conversion: Energy conversion means the conversion of solid coal to synthetic fuel gas (in situ or in-cycle), the conversion of methane bounded within the coal matrix to free-flowing drained meth¬ane, the conversion of solid coal in situ to a coal/water mixture (slurry), and the conversion of these gas fuels into electric power. Technological and managerial integration: This prin¬ciple means an integration of coal-gas methane min¬ing operations and electric power generation into one commercial mine-to-product enterprise with electric power as the final product. Thus, coalbed methane drainage and coal gasification (both in situ and in-cycle) integrated with a combined cycle of electric power generation constitutes a highly integrated coal-gas methane energy-generation system. The system can be materialized in the form of a local integrated coal-gas electric power complex (LICGEPC). General features of the new concept The coal-gas-methane electricity concept is actually a synthesis of the following four technological components: Coalbed methane drainage. This technique and its utilization attained recognition after commercial operations were proven successful in the San Juan and Black Worriers coalfields in the United States. Worldwide, extensive field experiments and research-and-development activities are being carried out in the area of coalbed methane exploitation and utilization. Recently, coalbed methane drainage for power generation has been undergoing intensive research and development. At the Harworth Colliery in the United Kingdom, a combinedcycle power plant has been built that uses coalbed methane. The plant has an installed capacity of 15 MW Also, Germany, Australia, the CIS and China have conducted various experiments and industrial tests on the use of coalbed methane power generation. Underground coal gasification. Another unconventional technological approach is underground coal gasification (UCG). A number of semi-commercial, demonstration and pilot projects have been undertaken in Russia, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Belgium to demonstrate the technical and economical viability of coal gasification in situ. In Uzbekistan, the Angren coal-gasification station has been in full-scale commercial operation for two decades. The operation supplies a power plant with synthetic coal gas. GENERAL HYDROLOGIC REGIME The total hydrologic cycle must be considered when evaluating potential ground water problems in a mining environment. Precipitation is the ul¬timate source of all surface water and essentially all ground water. Stream flow during low flow periods often orig¬inates as seeps or stream gains (base flow) where the water table intersects the land surface. A stream that is higher in elevation than the ground water system may lose flow, thereby recharging the ground water system. The magnitude of stream gain or loss is dependent upon the hydraulic conductiv¬ity and related properties of the underlying hydrostratigraphic units. Ground water moves constantly from recharge areas to discharge areas (streams and springs) usually at very slow rates. Large quantities of ground water may be in¬tercepted in many underground mining environ¬ments. Construction of an underground mine in saturated formations may encounter ground water inflows ranging from very small to very large and from continuous to intermittent depending upon the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic units penetrated. SURFACE WATER VARIABLES Precipitation occurs in different forms, varying amounts, and with a wide assortment of temporal and areal distributions in the various mining dis¬tricts within the United States. Mine inflow can be affected in a matter of hours by precipitation events where there is a direct hydraulic interconnection between the mine and the surface through fractures or a mine opening. The timing, form, amount, and distribution of precipitation should be evaluated in a mine inflow study. A portion of the precipitation that falls in a topographic basin moves as sheet flow to runoff channels (Fig. 1). Some of the precipitation infil¬trates the unsaturated soil zone where it can either move laterally as interflow to the surface system to augment stream flow or move downward as re¬-charge to the ground water system. The unsatu¬rated zone (called the zone of aeration or vadose zone) can range in thickness from essentially zero to a few hundred feet. The saturated zone or ground water system occurs below the water table (zone where hydrostatic pressure is greater than atmos¬pheric pressure) where all the pores are filled with water (Freeze and Cherry, 1979, p. 44). Moisture can be lost from any of the systems (surface water system, unsaturated zone, and ground water sys¬tem) by the processes of evaporation and transpir¬ation which return moisture to the atmosphere. Stream flow consists of runoff and interflow components plus an additional base flow compo¬nent (Fig. 2). Base flow constitutes ground water discharge to a stream. Base flow plays an increas¬ingly significant role as total stream flow declines. Base flow is important because it constitutes much if not all stream flow between periods of precipi¬tation when runoff and interflow have largely dis¬sipated. INTERACTION OF SURFACE WATER AND GROUND WATER SYSTEMS Recharge from a surface water system to ground water systems can occur via unsaturated or saturated flow. The amount of recharge is depen¬dent primarily upon the vertical hydraulic conduc¬tivity of the formations underlying the stream and the availability of water. Streams that flow over low hydraulic conductivity formations lose little water even if the ground water levels are significantly lower than the stream. A ground water system may contribute flow to a surface water system but nor¬mally only by saturated flow. This contribution usually takes the form of seeps, springs, and the base flow of streams. INTRODUCTION Drift design problems in caving operations are a re¬sult of the geologic factors contributing to the overall success of the system, of the engineering factors dictated by economic and technical considerations, and of ore production practices. Combining these factors, a rational underground sup¬port system of rock reinforcement, light steel channel section or welded wire fabric, and shotcrete can be de¬signed based on rock fracturing, rock load, abutment loadings, ground movement, expected repair and desired flexibility. The design concept uses the effect achieved by restraining, reinforcing, and maintaining some of the intrinsic strength of the fractured rock mass composed of interlocked blocks of intact rock and rock fractures. Three different examples of drift support design in hypo¬thetical mines using the caving system are given. Caving is a system of underground mining where ore is extracted by means of gravity after the ore body is allowed to fail by removing support from underneath. The rock mass of the ore body fractures and flows ver¬tically downward to let gravity do as much work as pos¬sible. Caving differs from many other mining systems in that blasting is used only to initiate the rock mass failure by removing the rock supporting the ore but not to break the ore itself. The initial movement of the rock mass dur¬ing failure and the consequent crushing and grinding during the continued movement serve to reduce the ore to particles of a manageable size, with only limited sec¬ondary blasting necessary. The broken ore is extracted from the bottom of the failed rock mass through funnels of some sort pre-excavated in the rock. Ore extraction must continue or the swell of the broken rock will even¬tually fill the cavity and stop further rock mass failure and movement. The excellent general discussion on block caving in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Julin and Tobie, 1973) adequately covers the principles and application of this type of underground mining. Many rock mechanics aspects of block caving have been covered by others (McMahon and Kendrick, 1969; Swaisgood, et al., 1972; Mahtab and Dixon, 1975; King, 1946) and will not be reviewed further. Maintaining the stability of production drifts is one of the most troublesome problems plaguing the mine manager in a caving operation. Many factors contrib¬ute to drift support problems, and identifying the causes of instability and producing a reasonable support design are two steps toward achieving stability consistent with the mine plan. This chapter sets forth a technique for the design of support systems for production drifts in caving opera¬tions. The basic support system elements employed are rock reinforcement, welded wire fabric, and shotcrete. Recognized as contributing to the design are the factors of rock load, additional load from mining activity, rock fracture characteristics, repair expected, and flexibility. It must be emphasized that the drift must first be stabilized as for a tunnel, and the additional strengthen¬ing for mining-induced loads cannot contribute to the initial premining stabilization, or the reserve of strength is used up. MINE PLANNING The efficient mine planning engineer not only must satisfy the economic, human, and environmental aspects of his task but must also consider the mechanical con¬sequences of his plan. The problems created for the mine by placing parallel drifts too close, by crossing drifts on different levels with inadequate, if any, separa¬tion, and by installing connections and crossovers in the haulage plan without regard for the effective spans cre¬ated, are only a few of the problems a mine planning engineer can create for himself and the mine. The effect on immediately adjacent mine areas when an area is caved is important to drift design because the removal of vertical support from a rock mass causes the weight of that rock mass to be shifted elsewhere. The adjacent rock mass will carry this load and reach a new equilibrium with the applied stress. The advancing front of stress increase that results from caving (and many other mining systems) is generally called the abutment load and is the increase in stress over the gravity or tec¬tonic stress that already exists, as shown in Fig. 1. In general, the abutment load will be similar in nature to the stress change found around an opening in rock and will be taken as causing an increase in the vertical prin¬cipal stress, due to an approaching caving boundary, so that

The so-called "construction aggregates," sand and gravel, crushed stone, and several kinds of metallurgical slags, are used principally in the construction and maintenance of all kinds of roads, engineering structures, buildings, homes, airports, etc. Production of these aggregates is approaching two billion tons annually. In terms of tonnage produced, sand and gravel has been the leading mineral since 1954, with crushed stone gradually approaching an equal tonnage. Sand and gravel is of widespread occurrence and of wide variation in suitable gradation and quality. It is a low-value, heavy-loading, short-haul commodity. These characteristics account for the historic concentration of production tonnage in and near urban areas where construction activities are concentrated. The combination of improved urban and near-urban highway systems and the steadily rising rail rates for short-haul traffic has fostered a consistent change since World War II from rail to truck transport, with trucks now accounting for more than 807 of the tonnage moving away from the production sites. While there are increasing numbers of exceptions, truck transport of sand and gravel is generally limited to about 30 miles. The expansion of the urban and near-urban areas of even moderate density, which became so pronounced after World War II, has been the source of most of the sand and gravel industry's environmental difficulties. Dust, noise and truck traffic associated with the operations -- particularly truck traffic -- have, of course, generated public complaint. This has been particularly true in those many cases where housing developments have approached and even surrounded sand and gravel operations which were in operation before the development started.

Despite the controversies that have surrounded asbestos over the past 20 to 30 years, no knowledgeable authority has doubted the usefulness of this material. Were it not for the health risks associated with the manufacture and use of asbestos products, its physical and chemical characteristics would continue to be hailed as an undeniable boon to mankind. However, it has become clear over the past 30 years that like other major contributors to our modern industrialized society, asbestos must be handled responsibly and with the full understanding that lack of care can lead to injury, suffering and death. In this sense, asbestos shares characteristics with nuclear power, pesticides and even motor vehicle usage. It is unlikely that modern society would be willing to walk away from the benefits bestowed by any of these valuable resources. Rather, the appropriate response to the identification of danger is to define the type of risk, quantify its incidence, search for methods of decreasing the risk and implement programs to achieve the goal of minimization of risk. We should recognize at the outset that the risk cannot be diminished to zero without elimination of the material entirely from our midst. The concept of acceptable risk is a complex issue involving medical, legal, financial, moral and even psychological factors that defy precise quantification. In essence, the major danger produced by exposure to asbestos is its potential effects on the respiratory system. Despite the fact that asbestos workers have constant skin contact with the material and porbably swallow it in the course of their activities, inhalation of the fibers is recognized as the major health risk associated with its use. Aerosols of asbestos are inhaled not only by miners, millers and fabricators but also by urban dwellers who have no direct occupational contact with the material. This occurs because asbestos has been applied to our buildings and has been used in a wide variety of products that touch our daily lives. While it is estimated that three to four million people in the United States have been occupationally exposed to asbestos, the number who have been non-occupationally exposed is many times that number.
