"In this paper, the most significant environmental aspects that are identified in the Taft Copper Project (TCP) are the quality and quantity of water, pollution of the existing watercourses and post-mining land use, matters such as air and noise pollution are deemed to be of less significance. Analysis has been performed for Do Nothing Alternative, Pre-stripping Phase, Mining Phase, Closure and After-use Phases. Analysis of the environmental assessment of TCP was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the general negative and positive aspects of the project were identified. In the second stage the intensity, magnitude and significance of the environmental impacts of the project were identified. The third stage is related to the final conclusions of the assessment team and the relevant reasoning. A modified Leopold Matrix was adopted for evaluating the significance and magnitude of the environmental impacts. For this project, the matrix was modified to allow the assessor to take account of negative and positive numbers."

SCOTT COULTER: Thanks, Eric. Thank you all for coming. Our first speaker today is Claude Bazin. Claude received a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1980 from Laval University in Quebec. He worked for a short time in a mineral processing plant and then returned to Laval to complete graduate studies in the field of process modeling and control. He obtained his master's degree in 1983 and his Ph.D. in 1990. In 1987 he joined Brunswick Mining, New Brunswick, as research metallurgist and subsequently process control engineer. In 1990 he joined Helzfield Mines, New Brunswick, as senior metallurgist. In 1991 he accepted a position of professor at the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, a position he is still holding. He's a member of the CIM, TMS, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Claude's topic today is "On-Line Material Balance for Flotation Plants." INTRODUCTION CLAUDE BAZIN: During the last two decades, the on-stream analyzer (OSA) has gained the stat& of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant (Leroux and Franklin 1994), and its application to oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. The OSA assays are sent to the flotation operators via an operator console or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee 1991) implemented in a distributed control system (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one could ask, "Could we get more from the OSA?" Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements for process optimization (McKee 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2-product formula (Wills 1992, p. 124). The 2-product formula is sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al. 1993). Least squares algorithms provide a robust alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring 1992). This paper presents some applications of a recursive least squares algorithm that provides real-time estimates of the mass flow rates within a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow rate measurements.

Engelhard Corporation is one of the leading producers of kaolin based products in the world, having acquired the assets of Freeport Kaolin company in 1985. Much of the production technology used in the kaolin industry was pioneered by Engelhard and Freeport, including Ultraflotation for improving product brightness, delamination to produce kaolin platelet products, calcination to produce ANSILEX® high opacity titanium dioxide pigment extender and pipeline slurry operations to economically transport kaolin from the mine to beneficiation facilities. Engelhard traces its roots back to 1870 when the Edgar family discovered kaolin behind their property in Bonhamtown, New Jersey. Today the company produces the broadest line of premium coating pigments with extensive sales throughout the world. The international scope of the company's business has led Engelhard to evaluate kaolin deposits throughout the world as possible grass roots production sites. Most kaolin products are used in the paper industry -- the largest volume end-user 80% of the total market -- as filler and coating pigments. Lower volume specialized applications include fillers and reinforcements for plastics and TiO2 extender pigments for paints and coatings.

The simplest natural ventilation cycle is similar to a Joule or Brayton cycle. This comprises two reversible adiabatic processes in the shafts and constant pressure processes underground and on surface. The thermal efficiency of such a cycle is given by the temperature increase in the downcast shaft divided by the absolute temperature of the air at the bottom of the downcast shaft, and is independent of the temperature increase underground. This efficiency is comparable to the Carnot efficiency, which is the greatest possible value between constant temperature reservoirs, source and sink. Two variations of the Joule cycle are investigated, using numerous work examples. In the first, dry air is used as the working substance, a fan is provided at the top of the upcast shaft, and various mass rates of flow are used with frictionless shafts and a constant resistance value in the horizontal mine workings. The lost work less the fan work gives the natural ventilation work, and this divided by the enthalpy increase in the workings gives the thermal efficiency. The thermal efficiency increases dramatically with mass rate of flow, although the enthalpy increase remains constant. This appears to violate the second law of thermodynamics, since the frictionless case has a Carnot efficiency. When the lost work is added to the enthalpy increase, however, the efficiency decreases slightly from the Carnot value, to conform with the second law. This increase in efficiency with mass rate of flow is often referred to as the reheat effect, although the air is not heated. The second investigation is similar to the first, except that the air entering the downcast shaft contains a small amount of water vapor, and there is evaporation in the mine workings only, until the air entering the upcast shaft is saturated. There is, of course, condensation in the upcast shaft. In this case, it is not possible to calculate the Carnot efficiency, but the thermal efficiency is 20 to 40% of the similar dry air values. This decrease is much more than can be accounted for by the larger value of specific heat for water vapor. In addition, the natural ventilation work is almost constant with increased mass rate of flow, and the thermal efficiency based on heat addition tends to decrease. The thermal efficiency based on heat and lost work decreases in conformity with the second law. The reasons for the differences in behavior between dry and moist air are not readily apparent.

The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. "For a long time, the recultivation of depleted opencast mines and operating systems was aimed at restoring the original state. The focus, as desired by policy-makers and the local population alike, was on restoring high-quality agricultural land and on creating reforested areas of value that suit their location. Until the turn of the millennium, recultivation measures were only rarely the subject matter of public planning processes beyond these general objectives. They were never regarded as nucleus and origin of sustainable structural developments. The rehabilitation of inactive lignite opencast mines in central and eastern Germany brought about a change in mind-set that understood recultivation to be a unique opportunity to completely redesign a landscape and gear it towards the future in the Rhenish mining area as well. The ""Inden residual lake"" and ""terra nova"" projects, planned in the last 10 years in cooperation with policy-makers and authorities, are two undertakings that provide sustainable structural impetus for the future today."

With the current trends towards the concentration of extraction to fewer but higher production units in deeper seams, often of higher coal rank, the role of methane drainage ranges has become critical. As mines exploit seams at greater depth and more remote locations there has been a need to extend the lengths of methane drainage ranges and to increase the capacity of the surface pumps. This trend has highlighted the need to effectively simulate the operation of a methane drainage range in order to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic system. This paper describes the development of such an analytical tool. The application of this computer model is illustrated by the analysis of the operation of the drainage system of an extensive mine. The paper concludes by considering the development of a [Knowlege Based or Decision Support System] which will assist the ventilation engineer in assessing the current performance of an existing drainage range and will suggest possible remedial modifications or design strategies which may improve the system performance. INTRODUCTION In order to maintain the general body methane levels to below predetermined statutory threshold limit values (TLV's) on major longwall production units there are, for a given production rate, two major complementary control devices which may be employed by the ventilation engineer. These are the combined design and application of a competent mine ventilation and methane drainage system. The methane drainage system should be designed so as to maximise the capture of the methane (firedamp) from the seam being mined and the strata gas liberated in the vicinity of the extraction zone from gas bearing seams or other reservoirs of gas situated at above or below the mining horizon. The design fresh air quantity entering the face should ensure that under normal operating conditions the methane entering in the vicinity of the face is rapidly dispersed and dilute to well below statutory TLV's. The drainage system must therefore be designed to maximise the capture of the methane gas liberated to minimise the amount of gas which enters the ventilation airstream. GAS DRAINAGE The inherent dangers of methane emissions in mine workings have been a problem of concern to mining engineers for many years. To alleviate the risk, methane drainage has been employed for some years to capture the gas before it becomes a hazard to the operation of the mine. The method of drainage employed will be dependent on a number of factors which include the longwall mining method and production cycle employed, the characteristics of the coal seam being extracted and those of the adjacent gas bearing strata. Self-supporting, open stoping underground mining methods are some of the earliest, starting with the prehistoric flint mines of Europe and the Egyptian gold mines of Nubia in the time of the pharaohs. When the early miner created an opening, it had to be inherently stable and self-supporting to enable him to continue. Therefore, as mining progressed beyond simple gophering, self-supported open stoping methods were devised to meet the needs of individual ore bodies. Timber for support appears in mines as early as 1000 BC, but this was for no more than local ground control. The ingenuity of mining engineers through history has so refined open stoping methods that today they produce more tonnage than any other mining system. Self-supported open stoping finds its application in moderate to strong rocks that exhibit little jointing or fiagmentation. Good back, hanging wall, and footwall conditions that require no more than incidental support are an essential part of these mining methods. Open stoping methods find applications in all inclinations of ore body from flat to vertical, and where ore movement may be either mechanical or under the influence of gravity. Table 18.0.1 demonstrates the range of ore bodies suitable for open stoping, with particular reference to their dip and the deposit thickness. Most of the flat-dipping applications use ore pillars for overall support and ground control that may be recovered under some conditions after completion of normal stoping practices. In steeper ore bodies, rib, crown, and sill pillars used to block out the ore may be recovered subsequent to the completion of stoping. Open stopes are frequently filled to facilitate pillar recovery. Two of the methods, vertical crater retreat (VCR) and shrinkage stoping, utilize fragmented ore for temporary support in the stopes. In these two cases, the stope is not strictly open until after drawdown.

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, operates a precious metals smelter at Columbus, Montana to further up-grade concentrates from its platinum/palladium mine. The smelter began operation in the summer of 1990. The gas cleaning system in the facility utilizes "oxidation/dilute mode" dual-alkali scrubbing technology to capture sulfur oxide gases from the process gas streams. This paper describes the rationale for selecting the dilute mode dual-alkali system and summarizes design parameters. Start-up problems and their solutions are also discussed.

A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

Most miners dream of finding a gold mine sometime during their mining careers, but not very often do such dreams come true. On the tenth day of September, 1962, our dream of finding gold came true when the results of the third drill hole were received. This was undoubtedly one of the most exciting days of our lives. Little did we realize then that this was the beginning of a major discovery destined to became one of the largest gold mines in the country. Discovering and mining gold is not entirely new, however, to Eureka. County a old Lynn Mining District in northeastern Nevada. Since 1900 there has been sporadic activity, mostly consisting of small lode mines and placers. These have produced totally about $300,000; and existence of our orebody would probably have remained unknown had it not been for the United States Geological Survey. The USGS extensively mapped the Roberts Mountain Thrust and published a paper indicating that mineral occurred along this fault and in some places was gold bearing. Utilizing this information, our Newmont Exploration geologists located an area in which: drills were brought in to test their theories. By keeping flexible in our thinning and working, we were able to bring a raw prospect to a producing mine with ore reserves of eleven million tons in a short three-year period.

Introduction The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of such scale is: "A hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water." The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem. The problem of scale in carbon strip circuits Carbon strip circuits present a particularly challenging scale inhibition problem. Many of the factors that tend to promote scaling are present in these systems. For example, carbon strip circuits are run at high temperatures and high pH levels and require long batch cycle times. Tortuous paths are encountered by the strip solution circulating through heat exchangers, pipes and elbows, causing transient pressure drops throughout the system. Severe conditions such as these cause the water to possess a high scaling potential and may lead to the breakdown of some of common types of scale inhibitors. Formation of scale Natural waters contain dissolved minerals and gases that promote scaling. One of the contained gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important factor in scale deposition. Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to yield carbonic acid according to the following reaction: [CO2 + H2O - H2CO3 (carbonic acid)] Carbonic acid rapidly dissociates to yield bicarbonate and carbonate ions depending on the pH of the system: [H2CO3 -s H+ + HCO-3 (pH range 6-10) HCO3 -a H+ + COO (pH range > 9)] In gold cyanidation processes, lime is added to raise the pH of the mill solution to 10 or above to promote cyanidation of the gold and to eliminate the possibility of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) formation. Lime contributes both hydroxyl ions (OH--) and calcium ions (Ca++) to the solution. The normal scale forming reactions in mill water systems were described by Beasley (1973) as: [HCO-3 + OH -s C03 + H2O Ca++ + C03 -a CaCO3] Factor affecting scale deposition According to Linke's (1958) solubility tables, the solubility of calcium carbonate in carbon-dioxide free water is only 13 mg/dm3 (13 mg/L) at 25° C (77° F). Scale deposition occurs when the concentration of calcium and carbonate ions in the solution exceeds the solubility of calcium carbonate. This occurs, in most cases, when the water has undergone some chemical or physical change. Some typical changes that might occur that lead to scale deposition are discussed below. Temperature An increase in temperature can greatly increase the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Studies by Miller (1952) have indicated that calcium carbonate is less soluble at higher temperatures. Hence, high temperatures promote scaling. For this reason, scale is often noticed on heat exchangers, autoclaves and other high temperature surfaces. Pressure A decrease in pressure may lead to an increase in the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Fulford's (1967) work has shown that scale is more soluble at high pressures. Hence, scale is likely to be prevalent in pump suction lines, elbows, baffles and other areas that produce turbulence and subsequent pressure drops. Change in pH Calcium carbonate scale is pH dependent and tends to form more readily at high pH. Any event that causes an increase in pH, such as the introduction of lime or caustic, would tend to initiate scale formation. Since most gold recovery operations are run at a pH above 10, the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale is always great. The use of scale inhibitors to prevent calcium carbonate scale Many products are commercially available to inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate scale. Some of the more effective types include phosphonates, as well as acrylate and maleate-based polymers and copolymers. Many of these products function by means of threshold

The pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota are the coarse-grained differentiates of the Harney Peak Granite. The Harney Peak Granite was intruded into the Pre-cambrian schist and quartzites and resulted in the Black Hills uplift. In the outer adzes of the granite intrusion occur the pegmatites. In the zoned pegmatites, representing the most highly differentiated portions of the parent magma, occur most of the minerals produced from pegmatites. These are of economic importance and they are the subject of this paper. The various mineral products will be taken up separately.

The National Lead Company operates its MacI tyre Development at Tahawus, New York for the production of ilmenite and. magnetite. The heavy ore of titanium and iron is mined from the open pit mine at an average rate of 7,000 tons per day, and the development waste is removed at an average rate of 10,000 tons per day. The mine working benches are spaced, at 35-foot vertical intervals, and 6 ½ inch blast holes are drilled 39-feet deep with 18-foot burden and spacing by down-the-hole drills. Waste is loaded with a 6 yeard shovel and ore with 2 ½ yard shovels into 22-ton rear dump trucks. A good account of the history of MacIntyre drilling and. blasting was presented to this assembly two years ago, by F. R. Jones. (1) Most of the blasting since the start of the mine in 1941 was done with 90% gelatin dynamite until 1955, when relatively insensitive canned blasting agents were adopted.. In 1956, 9-inch blast holes drilled with down-the-hole drills. In 1956, also, the first experimental trials of prilled ammonium nitrate fertilizer and fuel oil (hereafter called fertilizer) was made following the lead of Cleveland-Cliffs operations in the Hibbing district. Since that trial did not, as some local skeptics predicted, make grass grown on the bluff, but resulted in a well-broken shot, further tests were conducted in dry holes. I Observations of those tests indicated that the fertilizer did its share of the work. If anything, it produced better fragmentation than the normal load di in neighboring wet holes.

HISTORICAL REVIEW OF BOARD OPERATIONS The Ontario Worker's Compensation Board was established in law enacted by the legislature of the Province of Ontario in 1915. It was designed to pay insurance benefits to injured workers, and at the same time to protect employers from legal suit. It was based upon an enquiry system rather than an adversary system such as that used in the courts process. Initially, the system was designed to pay compensation benefits and subsequently, to pay for the cost of medical treatment and pensions for disability and disease resultant from the effects of traumatic injury. In 1947, the Act was changed to include industrial or occupational generated diseases, not specifically related to traumatology. Such occupational diseases were therefore accepted and benefits paid subsequent to that date. As will be discussed in several minutes, even today the vast preponderance of compensation claims with the Ontario Board continues to be related to the effects of trauma. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS DECAY PRODUCTS In some areas of Ontario, especially in Northern Ontario, there is a natural leaching of radon gas from the underlying rock formation. This constitutes very low levels of radon gas decay product radiation exposure to those persons coming in contact and inhaling these substances. This paper however is designed to discuss the occupational generated types of radon gas exposures. For many years dating back to the 1930's, partially refined ores were being shipped from Northern Canada to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, still in operation and currently operated by Eldorado Nuclear Limited of Canada. Initially, the purpose for the operation was extraction of radium to be sold on world markets for medical treatment purposes. With the advent of World War II, this market collapsed. Subsequent to World War II, the availability of other sources of radiation for medical radio-therapy generally replaced the requirements for radium. During World War II, a new market opened up for the Port Hope refinery however as work into nuclear chain reactions and the development of the atomic bomb identified the need for uranium and enriched uranium. During the period of operations where radium was being extracted at the Port Hope refinery, it is now known that an identifiable radon gas hazard did exist. This hazard disappeared when the production line for extraction of radium ceased operations. In 1954, uranium mining operations opened up in Ontario at two locations, Bancroft and Elliot Lake. At the peak of operations, 16 mines were operational and 11,000 workers were employed in these mining operations. A high level of mining activity continued over a 10 year interval with the Bancroft Mines closing permanently in 1964 following a 10 year life of operation. The other mines in Elliot Lake closed about the same time with the exception of two uranium mine operations which have continued to be operational up to the present time. By 1965, due to a dramatic drop in world demand for uranium, the total work force had fallen to 1/10 of the peak work force, and approximately 1,300 workers remained in employment. It is of interest to note that one significant difference in the work environment between Elliot Lake and Bancroft was the high silica content of the Elliot Lake ore. This gave rise to a number of cases of silicosis developing in relatively short intervals of time in the Elliot Lake miner population. No cases of silicosis were identified from the Bancroft operations. Based upon the experience in investigating and evaluating actual cases of lung cancer in the uranium miners over the years, the medical staff at the Ontario Board also developed the impression that radiation levels were much higher in the Bancroft operations, especially in the earlier years of operation, than at Elliot Lake. This resulted in accumulation of higher levels of Working Level Months (WLM), usually over a shorter exposure interval in many of the cases. This aspect will be further evaluated in this presentation. Subsequent to 1965, the work force remained quite static in numbers until 1975. At that time, there began to develop an increase in the work force, and this increase is continuing at a moderate rate up to the present. INITIAL METHOD OF HANDLING LUNG CANCER CLAIMS The first lung cancer claims in Ontario from uranium mining operations were accepted on the perceived cause-effect relationship. This relationship was based upon the data from the Colorado observations and the Czechoslovakia data. Initially, a series of regression equations on mortality were developed and used to estimate the effect of exposure to low cumulative doses of radon daughters as it might relate to the frequency of occurrence of lung cancer at any particular cumulative exposure level. A probability of cancer being radiation induced as against it being caused from other factors was calculated. This method was discontinued subsequent to 1972 due to problems encountered in carrying out this complex evaluation. Thereafter, each case was dealt with on an individual basis, being based upon whether or not the tumour was of the oat cell type, a cumulative exposure in excess of 120 WLM; latency periods in excess of 10 years, commencement of mining prior to

The Macassa Mine is a mature mine with a 61 year history of continuous production. The majority of past production has been derived from a zone called the '04 Break (Main Break). Recent underground mine exploration has been successful in locating several neighbouring ninera1ized zones. This paper will characterize the spatial location, geometry and mineralogical properties of these secondary zones. Future plans for underground mine exploration to follow-up on these target zones will be outlined.

The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. Flotation was introduced in phosphate rock processing in the late twenties and since then it has been an important part of the concentration process. More than two thirds of the rock produced in Florida is upgraded by the flotation process. Since no crushing or milling steps are involved in the material preparation, the flotation plant feed is coarser than in most other mineral flotation systems. During hydraulic processing of the rock, particles in the size range of -14, +150 mesh constitute the flotation feed. This size fraction is further classified by hydraulic sizers, stationary screens and vibrating screens into a coarse (-14, +35 mesh) and a fine (-35, +150 mesh) flotation feed. The flotation techniques for concentrating the fine feed as practiced by the Florida Phosphate producers have been standardized over the years, however, methods for upgrading the coarse feed differ from plant to plant. This paper reports on the behavior of mercury and its compounds during the thiosulfate leaching and recovery of gold. Thiosulfate solutions are shown to dissolve Hg0 and Hg2Cl2 to a similar extent as cyanide, but the leaching of HgS is significantly slower in thiosulfate solutions compared to cyanide. Hence, the use of thiosulfate may be an option for treating ores containing high levels of cinnabar, especially since the legislation concerning the discharge or sale of mercury is becoming more restrictive. The deportment of mercury during gold thiosulfate loading and recovery using a strongly basic anion-exchange resin was also studied. Although the mercury thiosulfate complex loads on the resin, the adsorption is weaker than for gold, with an equilibrium constant between gold and mercury of 51. Resin loaded with gold, mercury and copper was pre-eluted with thiosulfate (to remove copper) and eluted with a chloride and sulfite eluant. The majority of the mercury is eluted by the eluant and, hence, its deportment closely follows gold and the eluate would need to be treated to remove either mercury dur-ing or prior to gold electrowinning.

Historically, the treatment of orebodies for recovery of valuable constituents presents many processing challenges. In a time of heightened environmental awareness, the constraints placed on processing complex orebodies are becoming more and more pronounced. As such, established technologies are limited in their ability to fill the needs of these emerging sources of raw materials. A prime example of this is in processing PGMs from primary sources. Normally, this type of material is found in a nickel-copper-iron sulfide matrix. Typically, these materials are processed by established pyrometallurgical means. However, other options should be considered. Hydrometallurgical processes are available which offer advantages over pyrometallurgical methods. One of these is the nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach used industrially by Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. In 1990, laboratory work was undertaken in cooperation with Stillwater Mining Company to test PGM matte materials from the Columbus, Montana smelter. The initial results were very positive, and they led to a design to recover PGMs in a high grade residue and to recover nickel and copper as valuable products. Handling the iron and other wastes in an environmentally safe manner was also successfully investigated.
