In any operating mine, especially in precious metals operations, immediate improvements in profitability m readily achievable through more effective grade control. Just as the oil industry has come to recognize that enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in existing oil fields yields a higher return on investment than exploring for new oil, so too must the mining industry recognize the benefits of enhanced metal recovery (EMR). Current grade control practices are generally dismal. The very word "control" suggests a willingness to make the best of a bad situation -- as in "damage control" or "disease control" -- and a failure to perceive the opportunities for improved profit. While damage and disease can merely be controlled, success and improved profit can be engineered. This paper presents one approach to enhanced metal recovery. It shows how existing methods can be used to address the issue of ore/waste discrimination. The following sections outline the problem, describe the current state of the practice of grade control, propose an alternative approach and. illustrate the application of the proposed alternative to actual blasthole data from an operating gold mine.

INTRODUCTION Coal is forecast to be an increasingly important and economical source of energy for the future as the supply of oil and gas declines relative to overall energy demand and perhaps in absolute quantities produced. With the decline in productivity, especially in underground mining, in the early seventies coinciding with the need to produce greater quantities of coal for market, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place in the United States. Consolidation Coal Company (Consul) produces about 50 million tons of coal per year with approximately 66% being from underground mines. Most of the mines are located in the Appalachian Region in the States of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, and in Ohio and Illinois. Coal is produced by the room-and-pillar mining method with continuous mining machines in addition to an increasing number of longwall mining faces. Continuous mining machines will continue to be used for driving longwall development entries as well as in areas where partial extraction must be practiced in order to support the overburden rock because of surface structures or in areas that cannot be subsided, or where unfavorable geologic conditions limit the application of the longwall mining methods. ROOM-AND-PILLAR MINING METHOD Some background in the room-and-pillar mining method may be helpful to provide perspective. This method has been widely practiced since the beginning of coal mining in the region. It is a flexible system because it can provide either partial or nearly complete extraction, and coal pillars can be left where needed to support surface structures or oil or gas wells or because of unfavorable geologic conditions (Choi, Dahl and McCain, 1980).

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P's project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569' of tunnel mined to a 35' diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529' mined to a 12' diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30' finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller's Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.

Stability of an underground opening can be defined in several ways. To geologists and engineers that are used to working in geological environments where the major parts of the works after careful scaling can be left unsupported during the construction period as well as during operation, any rock mass behavior that requires reinforcement, support or lining may be regarded as a stability problem. To colleagues excavating underground openings in geological environments that require continuous use of reinforcement or support and lining "stability problems" are often associated only with those parts of the work where "standard" construction procedure and method of reinforcement or support and lining is inadequate, and special measures therefore needed. In either case, a major objective is to assess the stability problems correctly -as far as possible at the planning stage -- and choose methods for excavation and reinforcement or support that will bring the opening safely and as economical as possible through the problem areas. INTRODUCTION It is not uncommon that stability problems associated with faults or seams have been described as "unexpected." This term has unfortunately been used to indicate that no one knew that the fault or seam existed prior to excavation. A careful review of documented cases where serious stability problems have occurred revealed that the existence of these zones most often was known, but that their behavior was incorrectly assessed prior to or during construction. Miscalculations have been made in terms of the type and magnitude of loads that developed, and in particular in terms of the time-dependant behavior.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. Within the last year, the Nation has been shocked by two major tunneling disasters. Almost exactly a year ago 17 men died in the San Fernando Tunnel in an explosion attributed to gas. A few months later another 21 men died in an explosion laid to the same cause at Port Huron, Michigan. The analysis of the causes of these accidents is still continuing. While it appears that they differ substantially from each other in their specifics, they share the common trait that, like most industrial accidents, they might well have been prevented. Gas explosions in tunneling are neither new nor particularly unusual. Forty years ago, Assistant Director Jarrett was hired as a safety engineer on the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct in California after an explosion that killed 12 men. Prior to 1946, in California alone, the Bureau of Mines had recorded 27 gas explosions incidental to hard rock mining and tunneling. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of the principal regulations affecting tunneling and to indicate some ways in which safer and more healthful conditions can be obtained. The Bureau of Mines was established by an Act of Congress of May 16, 1910. Since that time the Bureau has been making investigations and compiling and publishing health and safety data relating to mining and to tunneling. If any benefit is to come from an anaylsis of tunneling accidents, it must be the knowledge needed to prevent their repetition. The Bureau of Mines has also had informal discussions with the Department of Labor regarding the possibility of the Bureau's assuming that agency's responsibility for tunnel inspections.

INTRODUCTION Underground mining causes disturbances of the primary state of stresses. Resulting from those disturbances a loss of stability of rocks that surround excavation may occur interrupting the production and creating life danger for the personnel. One of the manifestations of such an instability is a rock burst phenomenon which mainly occurs at great depths. From the mechanical mint of view the rock burst is a loss of stability /Filcek et a1.,1984; Pietuchow and Linkow, 1976/ due to : - quasi-static stress changes in the surrounding rocks; we will call it s seam burst , - dynamic stress changes in the surrounding rocks caused by rock shocks ; we will call it roof burst. Possibility of the rock burst occurrence Is uniquely determined by the state of stresses existing in the rock mass. In the following sections of the paper we will consider different aspects of this question. Moreover distributions of displacements and failure criteria for a coal seam at longwall mining will be defined. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Determination of the vertical stresses and displacements resulting from longwail mining will be based on the Budryk’s idea of a stress wave /Salustowicz, 1955/. The idea originates from the analysis of a roof plate /beam/ resting on the deformable foundation /Sean/ and subjected to the cylindrical bending. Equation of the bending lice uniquely defines vertical stresses and displacements which are induced in the seam. The equation will account only the shear force effect. Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

The object of underground excavation--apart from mining-- is to create an opening to serve as a part of some useful structure. The value of the opening lies in its conformity to the design configuration and its stability during the planned life of the structure. The wire saw could be used to excavate openings of high value at a cost competitive with present methods. First, a discussion of present methods will be used to explain where wire sawing fits in and how it should be applied. PRESENT EXCAVATION METHODS Tunnel Boring A recent advance in tunneling technology is the use of mechanical boring machines. There are many ways that a boring machine can reduce the cost of a tunnel or increase its value. I will mention a few of the advantages that have been demonstrated in tunneling projects. A tunnel can be bored without overbreak, allowing concrete lining to be poured to the design thickness without waste. Boring creates a minimum of disturbance to the tunnel wall, preserving the natural strength of the rock and reducing the amount of support which must be installed to maintain stability. A boring machine maintains the tunnel at its full dimensions and proper shape, and it leaves no rock projecting from the wall which must be trimmed off. The use of boring machines is presently limited to openings of uniform cross section and great length. If the previously mentioned attributes of mechanical boring could be applied to excavation of a wide variety of chambers and passages, then a corresponding decrease in cost and gain in value would be possible for chambers.

It is four years since the seminal study of demand for rapid excavation by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and Engineering outlined this technology's opportunities, requirements and significance to the challenges of urbanization and natural resource conservation. The demand study was quite simple. Opportunities were valued at market while requirements to produce new technologies were valued at cost. The significance of new technology in economic terms was measured by the net discounted gains to users over time. The Academy view in 1968 was that these gains, even most modestly estimated, appeared large enough to justify the bill for research proposed by that Committee (1). In 1970 the question of demands became international in what is recognized as the first international experiment in technological policy analysis, terminating in the Advisory Conference on Tunneling of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)(2). A monumental demand survey formed the basis for its economic assessment. The twenty-two OECD nations also made an impressive attempt to measure the magnitude of existing research and development efforts. In their recommendations periodical statistical demand forecasting and collection of demand data (Recommendation 1) was given central importance for public planning (Recommendation 2), the financing of public construction (Recommendation 3) and the encouragement of technological advance (Recommendation 4). Their program for international cooperation led to OECD's establishment of a Directorate for Environmental Affairs, and influenced the organization of the World Environmental Conference meetings now held in Stockholm under United Nations auspices. INTRODUCTION The Newtown Creek Pollution Control Project (P.W. 53) is a major system of facilities designed to collect wastewater from large areas of the Boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, then channel it to a treatment plant where the wastewater is processed and discharged. The North Branch interceptor collects wastewater along the east side of Manhattan and transports it downstream to a Junction Chamber at Avenue "D" near East 13th Street. The South Branch interceptor similarly collects wastewater from the southern part of Manhattan Island on both east and west sides of Manhattan and transports it to the same Junction Chamber from where both flows are delivered to the adjacent Manhattan Pumping Station which pumps the wastewater under the East River to a treatment plant in Brooklyn. This system is shown in Figure 1. Construction of the Manhattan Pumping Station began in the Summer of 1966 and was delayed by a number of mishaps. In the vicinity of the North and South Interceptors, approximately 3,060 cubic meters (4,000 cubic yards) of soil flowed into the excavation: 765 cubic meters (1,000 cubic yards) at the North Branch Interceptor, and approximately 2,300 cubic meters (3,000 cubic yards) at the South Interceptor. These movements were accompanied by surface subsidence, collapse, or both. On June 4, 1973, while pumping station construction was underway, approximately five to seven cubic yards of sand entered the junction chamber through a temporary bulkhead valve in the North Branch Interceptor.

Part two of this three part series looks at explosives use in open-pit and underground mining operations. Part three, next month, will discuss the transportation, storage, handling, and destruction of explosives. Larger ore bodies, lower grade deposits, and more difficult geologic conditions have led to changes in blasting products, techniques, and field practices in both open-pit and underground metal mines. Pit blasting operations must consider the material's geology, needed fragmentation for the material, and hole diameter and depth-as well as the traditional consideration of the type of explosive used. With underground mines, various blasting aspects of burn, angle, and machine cuts must be considered for an efficient and safe operation. Of the factors related to open-pit blasting, geology of the material is most important. Many theories relating to sonic velocity and rock hardness are used to determine needed explosives ratios. Extensive field tests are necessary to determine these factors. In most cases, results assume that the material to be broken is homogenous. The drilling penetration rate is sometimes used as a guide to determine rock hardness; however, this is not necessarily a good idea. In many cases, a very hard, brittle rock will blast with less difficulty than a soft, spongy rock. The formation's stratification is also important. In thinly laminated horizontal seams, rock will usually break and adequately fragment with relatively large burdens and spacings using a low explosives ratio. Massive formations with few laminations require close burdens and spacings and a high explosives ratio. When the stratification is pitched on a severe angle, it is usually preferable to develop the pit face 90°-but no less than 45°-to the stratification. If the face must be developed parallel to the stratification, burdens and spacings must be reduced and the angle drilling that will conform to the angle of the lamination should be given serious consideration.

It is indeed an honor for White Pine, as a member of the copper mining industry, to participate in this Rapid Excavation Conference. Although our presentation, as the title indicates, is not a success story, we foresee, through our experience, future application of boring machines and rapid excavation equipment in the hard rock mining industry. One might ask what a copper mining company would be doing with boring machines and why the gamble on a high-cost, capital investment for a relatively untried application. Perhaps a little background on the White Pine mine and its geology will explain our daring and speculative motives. THE WHITE PINE MINE The White Pine Copper Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Copper Range Company, operates a mine, mill and smelter at White Pine, Michigan in the western Upper Peninsula approximately 6 miles due south of Lake Superior. We employ approximately 3,000 people from the surrounding area and mine approximately 25,500 tons of low grade (1%) copper ore per day. The orebody is contained within several distinct sedimentary horizons that comprise the lower 20 feet of a Precambrian formation known as the Nonesuch Shale. Numerous articles and reports have described many aspects of the White Pine operation and the geology. I will brief you only on that criteria which precipitated our interest in rapid excavation equipment and techniques, specifically, boring machines. Mineralogical and optical studies have demonstrated that the siltstones, sandstone and shale beds all contain relatively barren and discrete particles of quartz (25%), feldspar and mica, bonded with

Two years ago, AlliedSignal embarked on a journey to improve QUALITY. However, the focus of this endeavor was on the CUSTOMER and not the traditional product focus. It wasn't that a focus to improve product quality wasn't fruitful in the past. We've practiced it in the chemical industry for many years with significant results. But our industry today is in a survival mode and yesterday's way of doing business is simply not good enough. In the mining industry, we have to make lug strides in how we do business or face losing our customer base. As you are well aware, other parts of the world are importing our technology at a rapid rate. We must work smarter to stay ahead of our customers ever more demanding need for higher quality at lower prices. With this as a driver, throughout the Corporation we reviewed in depth how we support our customers to keep them competitive and sought to eliminate work which did not help them reach this goal. Our first year of emphasis was on tools: how to hold meetings, gather data, and how to make decisions. This sounds very basic, I know, but you can't begin to imagine how productive meetings can become when you start with an agenda and prework delivered days in advance, and agree at the start of the meeting what should get accomplished. In the second year, we applied these tools to our work processes. We mapped how we do our work, scrutinized each step for value to the customer, and then set to work on how we could do things better. The areas we concentrated on were customer linked commercialization of new products, manufacturing and materials management. Our discussion today will focus on the commercialization of new products.

DOUG HALBE: Our next topic is one that I would think everyone might want to contribute to. I'm sure everyone here has had some experience in this area. If you haven't, I'd suspect you've never really run a mill. This is what we call "Horrible Spill Areas We Had When We Started Up the Plant and How We Fixed Them." Our next speaker has had a really great operating career. He had many years with Newmont in the Carlin area, and now he's executive vice president and chief operating officer of Independence Mining Company: Jim Komadina. I don't have to be nice to the speakers anymore, do I? [laughter] You may wonder why we picked Jim Komadina to give this talk. I was involved many years ago in the start-up of Newmont7s Gold Quarry plant. Jim held quite a responsible position there. I'm not going to say anymore, but I have in the back of my mind this picture of the pump floor and a rowboat and a guy rowing around on the pump floor. [laughter] Jim, was that you? [laughter] JIM KOMADINA: Probably. I wasn't responsible for the design. [laughter] Actually it's amazing. I've seen a lot of these plants and actually had the opportunity to walk around them, so when I say this, "Horrible spills I have seen and done," it's because I've been responsible for more than my fair share of them. But having seen a lot of spills, I will present a little bit of wisdom about how to prevent them.

Construction of the first phase of the Sao Paulo Metro, the North-South Line, will be completed late in 1974. The downtown section of this line consists of 2.2 miles of 19.6-foot diameter soft ground tunnels and 3 subway stations. The entire tunnel - station package was let to one contractor. A plan and profile of the tunnels and stations is shown on Figure 1. Passage of the tunnels under Boa Vista Street in the Sao Paulo Financial District was one of the major challenges. The street is only 50 feet wide from building line to building line and flanked by 10 to 20 story buildings. The tunnels pass within 4 feet of adjacent footings. Further south, the tunnels run 13 feet below the flat foundations of the Caixa Economica, a massive 11 to 14 story building. Surface settlement had to he limited to less than .07 feet/tunnel and good face control and grouting procedures were essential. For this reason, full face cutting wheel tunneling machines were selected to drive the tunnels south of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia which included Boa Vista Street and the Caixa Economica. The tunnels north of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia were driven under a fairly wide Avenue and greater settlements were permitted. Open face shields were selected to drive these tunnels. Most of the work has now been completed and analyzed. In this paper, solid bed erosion processes and the mechanisms involved when a two-phase liquid-solid mixture flows over a bed of solids in a horizontal annulus are analyzed. There are few such studies available with some authors arguing that the flow rate for erosion is always less than the flow rate for the suspension of solid particles thus necessitating further study and analysis of such phenomena. Tests were run to determine the mechanism of erosion and the erosion velocities of the solid bed formed in a concentric annulus for three flu-ids, water, a low concentration water solution of Carboxyl-methyl-cellulose (CMC), which behaved as a Newtonian fluid and a higher concentration CMC water solution which behaved as a power law fluid. Glass spheres of 2 mm nominal diameter were used as solids. The flow rate at which erosion occurred together with the mechanism of bed erosion were determined visually, while the whole process was video recorded. Our tests indicated different erosion mechanisms and different erosion velocities for the three tested liquids, with the liquid viscosity playing a major role. The first mechanism, observed for water flow, gives erosion from the front of the bed while the second mechanism, observed for the flow of the two viscous fluids, gives erosion from the top of the bed. The role of each of the parameters to erosion is investigated, whether it is turbulent flow with the turbulent fluctuations being more capable to remove the solids from the formed bed or whether it is liquid viscosity, which results in the hydrodynamic shearing force. The results demonstrate that liquid viscosity plays a role in the erosion mechanism and yields different erosion velocities of the solid bed hence, it should be taken into account when modeling flow pattern transitions for solid-liquid flows. Prior studies have not identified this and it could be the reason of the disagreement between theoretical models and experimental and field data.

Lithium requirements in the next few decades for batteries and controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors (CTR) may exceed the availability of the current mineral and brine reserves. It is thus prudent to search for new reserves and resources to satisfy these and future lithium applications. The lithium content of the waters from the Smackover oil field. located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, ranges from 100 to 500 mp/l and could represent a substantial new reserve. Experimental evidence described in the literature indicates that a specific chelating agent dipivaloylmethane (DPM), of the diketone type, has a specific selectivity toward lithium in the presence of other metal ions in aqueous solutions. Based in part on this unique property of dipivaloylmethane, a conceptual design of a full-size plant to extract lithium from the Smackover brine is presented in this paper. This study includes alternate flow-sheet development, design information on the major units of the process, energy requirements, and an economic analysis of a facility capable of producing 106 kg of lithium per year. The economics of three different process concepts depend primarily on the amount of water needing to be evaporated from the initial oil-field feed waters in concentrating the brine. The results, as a function of production rates, are indicated only in a general manner.

A phase-species classification is suggested for the mathematical models of flotation kinetics. Important models are discussed and the structure of their rate constants and parameters is analyzed. Split or enhancement factors are formulated for different kinetic models. The steady state dynamics of the flotation circuits can always be described in terms of these factors. For simulation of circuits, feed is characterized in a formal manner starting from a multivariate distribution of particles in flotation rate, size and mineral content. Synthesis of optimum circuits which simultaneously searches for the best process variables and structural parameters from a generalized master network is described. Trends in the areas of search algorithms, role of middlings and feed identification etc. are indicated.
