The copper market has become highly competitive around the world; therefore, operations efficiency is a must for copper producers. The economic outcome in a day-to-day milling is not evident at the concentrator stage, when traditional procedures are used in operations management, based on the supervision of process variables and metallurgical indices. Therefore, in such a complex business, there is a strong need to devise an approach to furnish concentrator's operators with procedures and tools to state and solve the problems related to operational decision making, leading to maximize the economic return of investment; this is what is aimed to be presented in this paper.

The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunnels of the Abu-Tartour project in Egypt create blocks of irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Although most of these blocks are unable to move into the free space of the tunnel, a few key blocks are capable of such movement. In addition, as soon as they move, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the removable key blocks of the walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks and then determine the best tunnel direction.

This paper is concerned with the problem of calculating ground movement that occurs as a consequence of mining. Solution to this problem is straight forward in principle but rather complex in practice. The complexities of the problem arise from the ever present constraints of technology and economics. However, the identity of these constraints is often obscured by a faulty understanding of the fundamentals of the problem and a lack of appreciation of current computational capabilities and costs. As a consequence much time and effort are sometimes wasted on gathering information that is of little direct value to ground control programs while important input data are neglected. This paper therefore reviews the essentials of the process of formulating the ground movement problem. Emphasis is upon application to longwall mining, although much of the discussion applies to other mining methods as well. In many instances, the hardrock term stope could be substituted for longwall panel because the fundamentals of the problem are independent of the excavation dimensions and numerical values of rock properties. The latter affect the outcome of a calculation, of course, but not the underlying formulation. Only the major features of the problem are discussed in this brief review. The objective of the discussion is the generation of a reliable basis for developing a technically sound ground control strategy. Any rational ground control strategy must be consistent with basic physical laws. For example, under static conditions, equations of equilibrium must be satisfied. Operational, that is, tactical, details may vary widely with local conditions, but the basic approach must be based on physical laws. The alternative empirical route is intrinsically unreliable and unnecessary as well. Empirical descriptions of ground motion caused by mining including recent statistical curve fits to specialized data sets (for example, surface subsidence data) as well as antiquated "theories" of ground pressure and so forth, however dignified with mathematical formulas, are hardly worthy of the label "theory". Extrapolation of statistical data is always accompanied by rapidly diverging confidence limits, while empirical equations simply lack predictive capability under circumstances even slightly different from those of the original development. For example, applications of surface subsidence curves generated empirically in the United Kingdom to coal mines in the United States generally result in considerably greater subsidence and wider subsidence troughs than actually observed. Locally, empirical criteria for specific ground control actions may be made practical through trial and error, but such tactics are no basis for the development of a general ground control strategy. In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall the traditional scientific distinctions between speculation, hypothesis and law, between the empirical and the proven.

High costs--and high risks--are normal in coal exploration and mine development. But risks and ultimate costs are minimized by foreknowledge of prospective coal seams and adjacent formations. Extensive drill hole programs are often used to obtain needed information. Cores and cuttings from these holes are used to determine coal location, thickness, and quality; they are also used to study physical and geological characteristics of surrounding beds. Valuable as these core and cuttings studies are, their effectiveness is often diminished by loss of recovery or by incomplete analysis. Needed is an effective and economical method for augmenting these studies. Well logs provide information of the type needed for efficient cool prospecting. Furthermore, obtaining these logs in drill holes, and evaluating the data they provide, is both fast and economical. To investigate the usefulness of well logging methods in coal explorations, the authors worked with Mr. Jon Jenkins of Truax Truer Coal Company. Logs were run in a number of drill holes in various areas of the Illinois Basin; these areas provided variety both in coal quality and geologic conditions. The data were studied extensively using computer methods similar to those now used in the evaluation of oil and gas wells. (2, 3) This study was used to produce a computer-generated analysis designed especially for mining problems.

Explosions of methane in coal silos and coal ships is an ever present hazard. Recent investigations have shown beyond question that considerable accumulations of methane do occur in coal storage silos and numerous recent explosions in coal transport shipping strongly indicates that the same conditions also exist in ship storage holds. Investigations have shown that the main concentrations of methane occur within the actual coal pile. Within this region normal silo and ship ventilation systems are ineffective. The main 1ine of defence is therefore to exclude potential sources of ignition or to place the coal in an inert atmosphere, or both. This paper presents the results of a methane survey of all operating silos in Western Canada. These results demonstrate that a serious and widespread hazard of explosion exists. This paper also discusses various methods by which this hazard may be reduced including methods of venti1ation, inertization, microbiological control and early warning systems.

This paper describes the algorithm used in a BASIC program for an IBMXT microcomputer, to simulate the underground mine climate. The program called CLIMSIM has been developed and refined over several years as a result of considerable use at operating mines. The program has been designed to be easy to use and be understood by the practicing mine ventilation engineer. It provides predictions of the work place climate, so that the optimum ventilation/cooling system can be designed to obtain a certain air cooling power or effective temperature at the work place. An example is given of the application of the program to a mechanized cut and fill stope at the Homestake gold mine in South Dakota.

The purpose of this paper is to present the benefits of high reactivity meta kaolin (HRM) in high performance cement-based systems. HRM, unlike other pozzolans, is manufactured from selected naturally occurring kaolin ore and carefully processed under stringent conditions to result in a consistent product with highly pozzolanic properties. HRM is an ultrafine pozzolan that enhances the mechanical properties (workability and strength) and chemical stability (durability) of Portland cement concrete and cement-based products. HRM is unique with respect to its white color which makes it an ideal choice for architectural applications where visual and aesthetic concerns are critical.

Chelating resins can be used to recover important metals from different sources, and it is important to understand which resin is most suitable for each metal [1]. This review  benefits the mining industry because chelating resins can be used to recover metals from low-grade ores and mining tailings, increasing the industrial process efficiency [2–4]. There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

INTRODUCTION The state of the art of soft-ground tunneling was discussed in detail by the senior author at the 7th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held in Mexico City in 1969. Little can be gained by repeating the information assembled at that time. Hence, in this report, only the briefest summary will be given of the overall state of the art and attention will be concentrated on trends and developments since 1969. A characteristic of recent developments is the continued trend toward use of shields and excavating machines. The implications of this trend with respect to design and construction, and particularly with respect to the treatment of unfavorable ground conditions, will be examined. Settlement associated with lost ground, a subject as old as tunneling itself, will be reviewed and methods will be considered for its reduction. Design of tunnel supports was discussed in detail in 1969 with respect to essentially rigid or essentially flexible types of linings. In this report, a definition of flexibility will be considered and design procedures suggested for linings of flexibility intermediate between the two extremes.

New Mexico is the leading domestic producer of perlite, a hydrated volcanic glass that can be expanded thermally to form a white, very porous, lightweight material. The United States is the leading consumer and producer of perlite in the world (Pettifer 1981). New Mexico produced, at five mines (Fig. 1), about 86% of all domestic crude ore mined in 1984 (Meisinger, 1985). Perlite is mined in 6 other western states, ore is expanded in 33 states, and the expanded ore is consumed in all states (Meisinger, 1985). Gross value of domestic ore mined in 1984 was about $16,500,000 (FOB mine; Meisinger, 1985) with much value added by expansion and processing prior to sale to end users. In contrast to the ubiquitous nature of perlite products in the U.S. economy, facilities for testing perlite ore, expanded perlite, and perlite products are notably lacking on a commercial, cost-effective, or readily accessible basis. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Min¬eral Resources (NMBM&MR) established a perlite¬testing facility in 1984 to mitigate this lack and to further the mining of perlite in the state.

Since gold was first discovered in Colorado in the late 1850s' mining has been a major part of the state's economic history, according to Stanley Dempsey, chairman and chief executive officer of Denver- based Royal Gold Inc. While the mining industry has seen some lean times throughout the past century, it has always bounced back. Today, dozens of major gold companies are headquartered in the Denver area. The state's coal mines produced record amounts during 1996. And even some of Colorado's uranium mines are resuming production. Dempsey joined other speakers in addressing the state of Colorado's mining industry during the Colorado Mining Association's (CMA) National Western Mining Conference. Some 800 people attended the CMA meeting, held Feb. 2-5 in Denver. The meeting was the association's 100th since it was incorporated in 1897.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to evaluate alternatives to sodium cyanide in gold leaching, three organic nitrile compounds were tested for their effectiveness as gold lixiviante. The organic compounds examined were malononitrile, acetonitrile, and cyanoacetamide. The reagents were tested on an oxide ore, two carbonaceous ores, and a eulfidic ore. Acetonitrile and cyanoacetamide were shown to be ineffective gold leachante. Malononitrile was the most successful of the organic lixiviants. On an oxide ore, malononitrile performed shilarlyto sodium cyanide with extractions of around 80 pct. For carbonaceous "preg-robbing" oree, sodium cyanide was completely ineffective while malononitrile extracted 24 pct of the gold. When using a resin-in-leach technique, extraction with sodium cyanide increased to 60 pct and the extraction with malononitrile increased to 80 pct. On the sulfide ore, sodium cyanide and malononitrile performed similarly with 80+ pct extraction as long as the pH of the malononitrile solution wae maintained above 10.5. Malononitrile is six times less toxic than sodium cyanide as measured by LD, levels. Therefore, malononitrile has a significant advantage over eodium cyanide, but its high cost and undemonstrated usefulnees make it unlikely to gain acceptance.

"The objective of the study conducted by the authors is to determine what media size(s) addition will maximize any given plant ball mill’s grinding efficiency (Fig. 1). The functional performance parameters “mill grinding rate through the size of interest,” and “cumulative mill grinding rates” from both plant and smallscale tests are applied to this task. A plant media sizing methodology, and industrial case studies, are provided.BackgroundA previous article (“Ball mill classification system optimization through functional performance modeling,” Nov. 17, McIvor et al., 2017, Mining Engineering) described circuit classification system efficiency (CSE), equal to the percentage of coarse (plus circuit P80 target size) material in the ball mill. It can be measured and then increased through pump and cyclone adjustments. By so transferring the application of ball mill power from fine (minus P80 product size) to coarse material, circuit efficiency is increased and overgrinding is decreased.The other factor that determines overall circuit efficiency is how well the power that is applied to the coarse material grinds it. This is affected by design and operating variables like the media sizing and mill percent solids. From circuit functional performance (McIvor et al., 1990):Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Power applied to coarse material (kW) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (1)The power applied to coarse material is the total mill power multiplied by the CSE. Therefore:Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Total mill power (kW) x CSE (%) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (2) Production rate, mill power and CSE can be measured during a plant circuit survey. The mill grinding rate of coarse material is then calculated. At the circuit target P80 size, this is the mill grinding rate (of coarse material) through the size of interest. The objective is to maximize this rate. The mill grinding efficiency can also be calculated by taking the ratio of the mill grinding rate over the material’s grindability as measured in the lab. Mill percent solids optimization has thusly been achieved (McIvor et al., 2000). For media sizing, maximizing the mill grinding rate on a given ore is equivalent to maximizing the mill grinding efficiency. Ores of different grindability will be part of the discussion."

Sonora Mining Corporation (SMC) operates the 6,000 tonne per day Jamestown open pit gold mine in the Mother Lode district of California. The mine has been in operation since January, 1987, and has produced approximately 7,800 kilograms of gold since start-up. The property consists of five ore bodies lying along a five kilometer stretch of the famous Mother Lode vein system. At present, only the Harvard ore body is being mined. The Harvard pit is centered around a historic underground mine of the same name that was operated from 1896 to 1916. The present ore body averages 2.5 grams gold per tonne as free milling gold and auriferous pyrite. The project consists of the open pit mine and concentrator complex in Tuolumne County, California, and a carbon-in-pulp leach plant located near Yerington, Nevada.

The topic of this paper is to demonstrate the development of mobile crushing installations from throughput capacities of 200 tons per hour, to mobile and semi-mobile large- scale crushing installations with throughput capacities of 3,500 up to 10,000 tons per hour. Basis are approximately 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations which have been built since 1956 or were on order in 1987. [FIGURE 1. Total Number of Mobile or Semi-mobile Crushing Plants] Sixteen of these approximate 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations have a throughput higher than 3,500 metric tons per hour. Mobile crushers were developed more than 25 years ago in Europe for the quarry industry, which had special requirements - fairly low capacity, mostly softer and less abrasive material (limestone) and full mobility. So the majority of the units up to about 1980 were fully mobile, having a fairly small capacity and utilizing mainly hammermills, double roll and impact crushers. It was only when the mining industry and large quarries picked up the concept in the early 1980's that a drastic increase in capacity took place. Even though the first mobile crusher in a true mining application went into service in 1971, it took another 10 years before it proceeded in a larger scale. This trend was obviously supported by the drastic fuel price and energy cost increase in the mid 70's. Since the cost of conveying material is substantially cheaper than trucking it, the increase in energy cost, combined with increasing haulage distances provided a strong incentive. Figure 1 shows clearly the throughput distribution of all crushing installations and it also shows the sharp increase in the throughput capacities within the last few years.

Introduction The disposal of spent ore from cyanide heap-leach processing facilities is of concern to the mining industry, the regulatory agencies and the general public. The disposal of an additional several hundred million tons of spent ore from heap-leaching operations is planned in the western United States during the next decade, and this amount could increase if gold prices rise. In the past decade, more than fifteen million tons of spent ore have been disposed of in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The criterion for offloading spent ore was set by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources at 0.5 ppm weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide. South Dakota's nitrate offloading limits vary for each mine, depending on ore type and other factors. Concentrations of nitrate in the leachate from spent ore depositories could be the result of conversion from other nitrogen-containing species. One likely source of nitrate is residual explosives from the blasting of ore. Previous work on the combustion products of nitrogen explosives has shown incomplete oxidation (Johansson and Persson, 1970). Another likely nitrate source is the degradation of cyanide to ammonia, followed by oxidation to nitrite and nitrate. A third possibility may be leaching of background nitrate from soil or rock. Objective The primary objective of this research was to investigate laboratory procedures for predicting nitrate concentrations in effluent after the disposal of spent ore at heap-leach gold processing operations. Laboratory tests were performed to define the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite in leachate as a function of time. Sources and species conversions were examined by investigating the nitrogen contributions from cyanide neutralization and from blasting with ammonium nitrate/fuel-oil (ANFO) explosives. Ore processing at cyanide heap-leach facilities Gold mines in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota normally use the following steps in their heap-leach cyanidation processing: Blasting. Surface gold mines in the Black Hills use ANFO explosives (approximately 95% ammonium nitrate and 5% fuel oil). Field evidence and studies show that explosives often fail to ignite or burn completely in shot holes. One reason is that ammonium nitrate absorbs moisture readily, which reduces blast efficiency. Ferguson and Leask (1988) cited a study conducted at the Fording coal mine in southeastern British Columbia. In that study, the total nitrogen released to surface and ground water was estimated to be about 6% of the slurry explosives. However, Ferguson and Leask (1988), in a later analysis of water quality near coal mines in the Kootenay coal fields, indicated that this is likely an overestimate of the nitrogen release. Mines that used ANFO explosives in dry conditions released 0.2% of the nitrogen from blasting. Cyanidation. At surface gold mines in the northern Black Hills, cyanide species from heap leaching can be classified into free cyanides and simple ions, weak complexes, moderately strong complexes and strong complexes (Scott and Ingles, 1981). Degradation of cyanide and disposal of spent ore. Methods of destroying cyanides include hydrogen peroxide oxidation, natural degradation and evaporation, water leaching and alkaline chlorination. Hydrogen peroxide is used to oxidize cyanides in the northern Black Hills mining area. The hydrogen peroxide oxidation reaction forms cyanate, which can hydrolyze to form ammonium and carbonate ions. After formation of ammonia or ammonium ion, further oxidation to nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) can occur. Spent tailings from gold processing in the Black Hills normally are disposed of in tailings facilities constructed in nearby drainages. Infiltrating rainwater with a typical pH of about 5.6 is an additional component introduced into the spent ore after disposal. Methods Field sample collection. Spent ore samples were collected from conveyor belts (or other convenient points) at heap-leach mines by personnel from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The samples were placed in black plastic bags that were contained within 5-gal buckets and sealed to prevent exposure to ultraviolet light. From the aspect of economic feasibility of mining, ineffective use of expensive mechanization investments is becoming a problem. In many cases, the machinery is in operation only 50 - 60 % of the total working time. The lost time when the machines are idle means a considerable over-investment in machines. The lost time, with LHD equipment in particular, accumulates from the following constituents: - the needs of the person operating the machine trips to the work site, lunch, coffee and other breaks, want for comfort, etc. - deficiencies in the monitoring and control systems for machine operation waiting periods at loading and unloading stations, unnecessary and erroneous actions, inefficient work, etc. - deficiencies in the machine condition monitoring system , and inefficient service and maintenance work The data transfer and computer technology of today provides means for resolving problems in several areas - including the area of underground loading operations. In the paper those areas of automation and data handling are considered which make possible an improvement in the usage and monitoring of LHD equipment. These fields are: remote control of equipment, use of TV cameras and monitors in remote control, locating equipment and data transfer down the mine, measurement of the load and the data storing system, systems for following the condition of the equipment, unmanned operation of equipment.

Due to unfavorable geological condition, excessive deformation of mine drifts occurred in a large underground copper and nickel mine. In searching for a solution, a comprehensive underground monitoring program was implemented and the opening convergence and the surrounding rock deformation were monitored. A large number of field data were collected and thoroughly analyzed. The convergence and deformation as function of time and depth were determined and a rock stability index was proposed. Based on the deformation-time and deformation-depth relations, critical deformation times and locations were identified and defined as characteristic values to be used for mine opening and support designs. The characteristic values are critical in the application of two-step supporting system, and the determination of support parameters. The application of the method developed in this study has demonstrated that this practical approach in support design and installation is effective. With the two-step supporting system, a long-term drift stability can be achieved in the mine.

Research methods to develop an economic model for the determination of regional mineral advantage are discussed. An industrial complex conceptual framework is used to study potential mineral resource outputs of Kansas. A procedure for making a comparative cost analysis of potential outputs for a Kansas-based industrial complex is outlined and illustrated. Methods for estimating aggregate demand and for developing an input-output matrix for a hypothetical limestone complex are explained. The input-output matrix is expressed in physical units. A computer algorithm for converting physical production data and input cost data into total cost per unit of output information is briefly explained and flowcharted. Limitations and usefulness of this procedure in determining regional advantages are surveyed.
