The areas are identified where the techniques of operations research have been applied in the petroleum industry. Particular emphasis is given to the linear program models that have been used for solving management problems. Of the entire gamut of applications for linear programming, attention is focused on the models that represent underground reservoirs. Such models could be used to help schedule drilling rig operations and to schedule oil production. A framework is established for placing the model for underground reservoirs in the proper perspective along with the models which represent other facets of the oil business. One of the remarkable phenomena of this century is the rapid growth in the size and' complexity of human organizations. The mere size of modern business means that administrative decisions can affect vast quantities of capital and large number of people. Mistakes can be tremendously costly, and a single wrong decision can require years for rectification. Moreover, the pace of modern business is such that decisions are required more rapidly than ever before; the mere postponement of action can give a decided advantage to a competitor. It is not surprising that the increase in difficulty of decision making has been followed by efforts to put this activity on a more objective basis. The growing science of operations research, which relies heavily on the methods that have proved so successful in the physical sciences, is one aspect of these efforts.

In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

A methodology was developed wherein. the increase in compressive strength, mineralogical changes and pore water composition were all studied simultaneously as a function, of moisturized spent shale curing time. From these results the relationship between the nature of cementation process and the composition of pore water was established. Heavy metals were entrapped in the cementing constituents and the pore water became mainly a solution of alkaline sulfates. While the specific data are applicable only to the material studied, the methodology and general conclusions are useful for evaluating the environmental factors in spent shale disposal and expected leachates composition.

"In early 2014, Nicholson Construction Company was awarded, together with its tunneling sister company Bessac, the Norris Cut Miami Tunnel Project. The 2.5-meters diameter segmental lined tunnel, 1600-meters long, is aimed to replace the existing 54” force main connecting the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WTP) on Virginia Key to Fisher Island. To overcome project challenges such as the highly permeable limestone of the Fort Thomson Karstic Formation (one of the most permeable formation in the World), the project team has developed State of the Art solutions: The TBM was launched with pipe-jacking technique for the first 70-meters and then converted to segment erection mode. It allows substantial schedule savings and drastically reduces the size of the circular launching shaft. The TBM, jointly designed and manufactured by Bessac and Herrenknecht, can convert from slurry to EPB mode within a few minutes. The cutters can be replaced by wet divers thanks to an innovative application in the TBM industry. PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT The aim of this project is to replace the existing 54-inch force main pipeline which transmitted all sewage collected from Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor, North Bay Village and Fisher Island to the Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) to Fisher Island. The existing pipeline consisted of pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe which is in poor condition in a number of locations and could be subject to sudden failure. An adjacent portion of this existing force main under the Government Cut (North Fisher Island) has already been replaced as part of a previous design-build contract and involved the installation of a 60-inch diameter fiberglass-reinforced mortar pipe installed inside a micro-tunneled casing."

"Metro Line 5 in Sao Paulo is being constructed. This lot extends for 4,940 m with twin EPB shield tunnels under a dense and busy urban area, with an excavation diameter of 6.9 m. The tunnels run predominantly in the tertiary soils of Sao Paulo where extensive experience exists from previous EPB shield tunnel projects. However, new experience is being gained in Sao Paulo in shield tunnelling through Saprolite, the weathered product of the underlying Gneiss crystalline basement, through the resulting residual soils and in rock-soil mixed face conditions. Furthermore, experiences in difficult mixed face soil conditions with overconsolidated clay at the face in combination with loose sands at the crown under the groundwater table will be presented. Additionally, the design, operational and controlling approach followed for the shield drive at particular critical cross-sections where the shields were driven close or under buildings. INTRODUCTION Within the framework of Sao Paulo´s metro network expansion, the excavation of the shield tunnels for Metro Sao Paulo Line 5 is currently taking place. The present paper deals with the description of the most relevant features from the construction of the Line 5 – Lot 3 tunnels. The paper presents how particular challenges were dealt maximising potential of EPB shield tunnelling technology. Challenges were posed not only by the difficult boundary conditions of urban shield tunnelling, such as shield drive under buildings, but also by complex geotechnical situations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The great urban area of São Paulo is one of the biggest cities in the world, with around 20 Million people living in the city and in the suburb area. The city faces great mobility problems and in the last years the government has been investing great amounts on the megacity´s metro expansion. The Line 5 Extension plays an important role to connect the south area to the central area of the city, with a whole extension of 11 kilometres, including 11 new stations. It is estimated that this line will transport almost 900.000 passengers/day. The first stretch of the expansion, Lot 3, consists of two single tunnels, almost 5 kilometres long each, crossing 4 stations. Figure 1 shows details of the Line 5 Expansion."

The term "finite element analysis" is heard and seen in print a great deal these days; a few words on what precisely it is are in order. In the broadest sense, finite element analysis is an application of an idea developed by a nineteenth century mathematician named Rayleigh. His basic idea was to decompose any problem in mathematical physics into a large number of simpler problems, solve the simpler problems, and then put those solutions together to form an approximation to the solution of the original problem. The scheme works nicely because of two features: first, much of the difficulty in solving practical problems of mathematical physics stems from irregularities in the boundaries and the simpler problems can be chosen with regular boundaries and second the smaller problems are solved for small physical areas where simple approximations of the solution do not differ much from the true solution. In the narrower sense, in which we are now interested, finite element analysis is a technique of using imaginary simple structural elements to construct analytical models of real structures. A direct parallel with the Rayleigh approach exists since the "finite elements" have simple boundaries and are restricted to simple behavior within a single element. Although the correspondence between Rayleigh's ideas and finite element analysis is now widely recognized, the computational tool, as it has developed over the last thirty years, comes not from the discipline of physics but rather from that of structural engineering. The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. "INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."

Of the fossil fuels used for power generation coal is by far the most variable and complex in its properties. A thorough review of the characteristics of the coal to be fired is essential before boiler design can begin. Major parameters such as heating value, moisture content and ash properties will determine not only the boiler size and configuration, but also the performance of the unit with respect to the thermal efficiency, particulate and gaseous emissions, and unit availability and reliability. An example of a review completed on a large low-rank coal deposit for a power plant will be described.

The concept for a Mine Escape Vehicle (MEV) is motivated by the desire to enable personnel to evacuate a mine rapidly as the first and most desirable response to any underground emergency. Under a NIOSH contract, Raytheon UTD developed a conceptual design for a vehicle that coal miners could use to facilitate their rapid exit from an underground coal mine in the case of emergency, including fire or explosion. The vehicle requirements include the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, operate in an oxygen deficient, low or no visibility atmosphere, and travel at speeds faster than miners can walk out of the mine. To develop the MEV concept, three primary tasks were identified and executed. The first task focused on developing a realistic concept of operations (CONOPS) and associated high level vehicle requirements. The second task identified and evaluated currently available equipment and technologies that could be applied to address the CONOPS. The final task developed a design concept that integrated the identified components for the five (5) MEV sub-systems to provide the foundation for future detailed engineering design and prototype construction. The resulting MEV design concept is centered upon retrofitting existing mine personnel carrier chasses with available, mine-worthy equipment capable of addressing the MEV requirements. This approach offers a practical and economic avenue to prototype development and delivery with minimum lead-time and risk. Furthermore, by integrating familiar and available equipment into the design and CONOPS, the resulting Mine Escape Vehicles should also be more readily accepted by the mining industry.

With underground stone operations developing in deeper and more geologically complex conditions, accurate pillar stability analysis becomes for the evaluation of engineering design. This paper provides engineering-based recommendations for applying LaModel to evaluate multiple-level room-and-pillar stone mines in both shallow and deep cover. It provides practical guidance on model calibration using field observations, selection of input parameters, and interpretation of results to inform design and operational decisions. The analysis demonstrates LaModel’s effectiveness in simulating pillar load transfer, stress redistribution, and failure mechanisms in complex mining geometries where empirical methods may be inadequate.

"INTRODUCTION The Lisbon Valley Mining Co LLC (LVMC) operates the Lisbon Valley Mine located in SE Utah. The mine includes 3 open pits, 150-acre heap leach pad, and solvent extraction electro winning plant (SX/EW). Approximately 25MM tons of ore has been mined since 2005. The ore is stacked on the leach pad to an average height of 55 feet and occurs as a blend of crushed material (minus 2”) and run-of-mine (minus 24”). The host rocks include Dakota and Burro Canyon Sandstones. Copper occurs finely disseminated in this material at an average grade of 0.46%. Minerology is 63% sulfide, 27% oxide, and 10% insoluble. Total inventory mined through 2016 is approximately 230 MM lbs. METALLURGICAL CONSTRAINTS Copper production is constrained by areas of low permeability ore and geochemical issues, including acid consumption. The intrinsic permeability the ore ranges from 10-2 to 1 Darcy. This permeability does not permit sufficient aeration by natural convection, therefore oxygen transport is largely limited to the mass of oxygen that can remain dissolved in leachates. As a result, greater than 50MM lbs of copper remains in inventory and occurs secondary sulfides, including chalcocite, covellite, and bornite. BIOLEACHING FUNDAMENTALS Due to the higher activation energies of secondary sulfides, notably covellite and bornite, a strong oxidant is needed to remove an electron from the metal-sulfide lattice and release the copper cation into the sulfate solution. This process occurs most efficiently using the strong oxidant ferric iron (Fe3+). Ferrous iron can be oxidized to ferric iron by oxygen via chemical oxidation or biologically; which was measured to occur 500,000 times faster when using microbes versus oxygen.1 The microbes that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron are naturally abundant and will develop biomass when appropriate conditions and nutrients present themselves. Most nutrients are provided by the ore/irrigation (P,N,Mg, Ca & Fe2+) while the others (O2 and CO2) are provided by air. In most cases, oxygen transfer is the rate limiting step during copper sulfide leaching. 1 Lacey & Lawson 1970 FORCED AERATION SYSTEM DESIGN This paper describes LVMC’s efforts to bioleach the remaining inventory by forced aeration. Two basic aeration systems were installed and tested including vertical wells and horizontal piping. Vertical System The vertical system was installed using the mine’s blast hole drilling rig. Wells were constructed using 4” high-density polyethylene (HDPE) connected to 4” polyvinyl chloride (PVC) screens similar to conventional bioventing wells. Ore samples were collected at each well location to characterize the spatial distribution of the remaining inventory along with fines (minus 200 sieve), pH (acid consumption), and iron. A block model of each analyte was developed and mapped in 3D."

Column flotation technology has a demonstrated potential for recovering clean coal from high-ash waste fines. The effect of different variables such as air flow rate, frother addition, depressant addition, percent solids and particle size on the quality of separation are discussed. Results indicate that air flow rate and depressant addition are the important variables which control the selectivity in the flotation of fine coal in a column cell. Separation efficiency achieved with column cells is significantly better than that with conventional flotation cells. Under appropriate experimental conditions with a deep column, more than 80 percent coal can be recovered in the concentrate containing 10 percent ash from waste fines containing over 60 percent ash.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology and the modelling work carried out to date. The Lisheen Zinc-Lead deposit was discovered in April, 1990. The deposit comprises two stratiform sulphide orebodies, hosted within the Lower Carboniferous Waulsortian limestone formation. The fully diluted geological resource is 22.5 Mt @ 13.02% Zn and 2.19% Pb, based on a total of 548 diamond drill-boles and 10,998 sampled core intersections. Due to the absence of a geological marker it was necessary to apply economic criteria to define and model the resource envelope. In common with other drill-hole geological databases, the establishment of a workable geological model presents unique challenges.

Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Gh) Ltd., the leading gold mining operation in Ghana is embarking on a major rehabilitation and expansion programme to increase gold production. A new southern ventilation district was targeted for this programme, and the ventilation system was to be reviewed in order to cope with increased production. The southern ventilation district was previously ventilated by booster fans. This arrangement was however, inadequate to solve the problem of the need to reduce smoke clearance time of the production areas, and to generally improve the underground ventilation conditions. Fan maintenance costs increased with the number of fans installed in the booster fan arrangement, and the fact that the fans were installed underground made maintenance difficult and took longer time. It became necessary to consider the installation of a new main fan on the surface. This paper gives an overview of the ventilation systems of the southern ventilation district of the mine before and after the new main fan was installed. The field tests carried out on the fan to ensure that it complied with supplier's specifications are described, and the new system analysed to see it's effectiveness.

Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of continuous miners. Two field surveys were carried out. The first survey assessed the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey studied the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e., magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear, Primary factors affecting bit wear were identified. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study in detail the effect of some of these primary factors on wear. Results indicate, that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity a continuous miners. Furthermore, under severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings in roof and floor) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increase the production cost due to a higher consumption of bits. This study also indicated that beyond 20% of the conical height loss (which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss) the rate a bit wear accelerates. This increased rate of wear is an indication of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a dustier environment.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.
