Heavy metals contamination is an environmental problem at Army installations engaged in firearms training and munitions production. At these facilities, weathering and corrosion of expended munitions and leaching from wastewater lagoons, landfills and burn pits have resulted in heavy metals contamination of the soil. The principal metals encountered in firing-range soils are lead, copper and zinc. Cadmium and other metals, such as antimony, that are often incorporated in the munitions are sometimes seen in lesser concentrations. Mercury is associated with various propellants and, while present in much smaller concentrations, is of concern because of its acute toxicity. Chromium is primarily associated with plating operations. The transport of metals into groundwater has been confirmed at some locations, which has required treatment of the soil and groundwater at these sites. Certain treatment processes for contaminated soil produce metals-laden extracts, which also require treatment before reuse or disposal. Ion exchange is generally quite effective for removing metals from aqueous streams. However, resins are expensive and must be regenerated, and activated carbon is generally less effective for most metals and also requires regeneration. Therefore, alternative effective and economic sorbents are needed. Twelve sorbents were screened in initial batch testing. These included activated carbon, bark, chitosan, crown ether, corn cob, xanthate, clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite), peat moss, seaweed and reagent-grade zeolite (aluminosilicate, Sigma Product No. Z3125). Of these, zeolite demonstrated the highest capacity for Pb, Cr and Cd. For this reason, zeolite was selected for further testing in batch, kinetic and column studies. Materials and methods Zeolite. The zeolite used in the second-phase batch and column studies was obtained from a natural deposit of clinoptilolite-rich rock located in South Dakota (Rocky Ford SDH) (Desborough, 1996). Large blocks of the material were crushed and sieved into the following three particle size ranges: 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 4.0 and 2.0 to 4.7 mm. This material demonstrates high structural stability in acidic solutions (pH 2.5) (Desborough 1996) and has a measured surface area of 30 m2/g. The measured total cation-exchange capacity (TCEC) was approximately 10 meq/100 g. This is well below what has been indicated for commercially available zeolite, which has been reported to be about 180 to 220 meq/ 100 g. The TCEC test was repeated (Method 9081, SW 846) using sodium acetate. The test resulted in a TCEC of 54.5 meq/100 g. The difference between values obtained for this material and published values for zeolites may be attributable to the greater heterogeneity in the material used in this study, compared to commercially available materials, or to the effect of the relatively large particle sizes utilized. Batch studies. Seven batch studies were conducted using synthetic metal solutions and soil extracts (Table 1). Extract composition: The P-extract was prepared by sequential surfactant extraction of organics from a burnpit soil followed by acid extraction of metals. The pH of this solution is approximately 1.1. A number of metals and organic compounds were present in the soil. Analysis of the extract was restricted to Pb, Zn and Cu concentrations for this study. The FBH extract was produced from a firing-range soil that was oxidized with a 0.01 M CaO solution and then extracted with 0.1 M acetic acid. This was filtered through 0.5-µm Whatman No. 5 filter paper and stored at room temperature. The pH of the FBH extract was approximately 4.5. pH Control: Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be present in the zeolite horizon or bed. Calcium ion (Ca") is released from the exchange sites when in contact with solutions containing ions for which it is more selective, such as lead. This results in a rise in solution pH over time. Acid washing removes most of the carbonates, eliminating the need for a buffer. Batch studies were conducted using both acid-washed zeolite (AW) and unwashed zeolite (UW) for performance comparison. The UW zeolite was rinsed with distilled deionized (DDI) water to remove fine soil particles. Both materials were dried at 105°C (220°F) overnight, so that the dry mass could be determined. The alloys mainly used for short (or segmented) chip material cutting (cast iron, porcelain, etc) are alloys of the WC-Co type; in some cases with small additions of other carbons. The same alloys but of different granulometric classes are also used for pieces exposed to wear (wire drawing, moulds) The higher performance of the WC-Co alloys in chip machining applications is accounted for by their very good heat conductivity, which is 2-3 times higher than that of fast steels. The hard-alloys producers can resort to a wide range of possibilities to achieve variation of properties of a WC-Co composition and thus they can adapt their products to the particular type of tools they may choose to manufacture. The present metallography technique allows for a correct identification and evaluation of hard sintered carbons structures. The metallography approach is an indispensable method of investigation and control in the industry.

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of fuzzy logic control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC of heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be developed using statistical process control (SPC) techniques that are first applied offline in manual mode through the use of control charts. This process is then brought on line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to automate the circuit. The advent of programmable logic controllers into preparation plants has enabled the implementation of regulatory control. As shown in Fig. 1, regulatory control is the first level of process control as applied in a processing facility. This involves: ? The logic sequences for start-up and shutdown procedures and all the necessary interlocks for safety purposes. ? The systems to control individual parameters and individual units. Various sensors provide information that is useful to plant operators, while some can be used as signals to simple control loops (Couch, 1996). This is the foundation of process control. It must be performed well if there is to be any success in supervisory control (level 2). Supervisory control involves overseeing and directing the operation of unit operations, or of the whole plant. This includes more complex loops with cascade control. And it may involve feed forward and feedback systems. There have been some applications of this kind of control to thickeners and flotation circuits in coal preparation plants. In addition, there are supervisory controls on some dense medium circuits and, in a few cases, on jigs. These are implemented with proportional integral- derivative (PID) controllers that are available in the PLC or distributed control system (DCS) operating soft ware. In a coal preparation plant, there might exist 200 to 400 PID loops. In a coal-pro¬cessing plant, this number is increased to 2,000 loops or more. It is important to use the correct algorithm or function to control a process variable to the point where automatic control shows a markedly decreased variability over manual mode. This is where fuzzy logic and neural networks have an advantage over traditional model-based expert systems. Because dynamic models of coal preparation unit operations do not exist, model-based expert systems that are prevalent in minerals processing cannot work. Not enough is known about the dynamics of the gravity separation processes employed in coal preparation. Therefore, an artificial intelligence (AI) system consisting of a subset of fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and neural networks must be applied in coal preparation plants if a supervisory control system is to be successful across a range of feed characteristics and variable set points.

The construction of a large span, high-walled underground opening in a low strength shale rock is unprecedented. The feasibility of constructing a pumped storage project with several tunnels and a large underground powerhouse in low strength shale rested largely on the feasibility of building stable openings large enough to accommodate the required equipment. Because of the lack of experience with large openings in shale, the decision was made to excavate a test adit and test chamber and conduct a multi-faceted geotechnical evaluation program designed to yield pertinent in-situ data on the ability of the shale to accommodate a large underground opening. Factors considered in the shape, size, orientation, and location of the test chamber were: (1) similarity to the anticipated powerhouse chamber, (2) nature of the most important data to be obtained, (3) feasibility of construction, and (4) economics.

The Yindaruqin Irrigation Project is designed to irrigate 57,000 ha of land in the central part of Gansu Province of People's Republic of China. Water for the Project will be diverted through an 87 Km long feeder canal which will convey 36 cubic meters per second from an intake on the Datong River. (Fig. 1) The feeder canal consists of approximately 10 Km of open channels, 75 Km of tunnels and 2 Km of siphons and aqueducts. This is the biggest self-flowing irrigation water control project in the Northwest of China and it is among the most interesting projects in China for the geological and environmental conditions. Nearly half of the investment in the Project is a World Bank Loan and contractors were chosen by means of international bidding. The Italian Company, CMC Ravenna, succeeded in answering the bidding for the construction of tunnels 30A and 38, perhaps the most difficult in the Project, submitting a TBM alternative to the conforming drill and blast contract recommendation.

Permanent magnets are used in most electromechanical and electronic devices to convert electrical to mechanical energy and vice versa. More than fifty are commonly found in the average American home and car. A new species of permanent magnet composed of iron, neodymium, and boron has recently been developed which combines superior magnetic properties with compact size. The reduced size of the magnets has enabled significant new developments in such areas as robotics and consumer electronic, among others. The objective of the present work is to efficiently and economically separate valuable rare earth materials from the relatively worthless iron constituent in NdFeB magnet scrap. Several magnet producers have expressed interest in the development of such a process and have provided information and scrap samples to aid in research. Scrap is generated in a variety of forms from different stages in the processing stream. Pieces of magnetic and non-magnetic metal as well as sludge and ribbon from jet casting must all be treated. Beneficiation techniques have been studied and size distributions developed for the different scrap types. Slag from the casting process is resistant to crushing and may need to be embrittled first, but all other types are amenable to crushing and ball mill grinding using stainless steel balls and water. Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.

The understanding of yielding pillar behavior has been well documented in terms of pillar strength using numerical simulations and empirical formulas, but the understanding of how fracture propagates in a matured yielding pillar is not well established. A new empirical summation chart of fracture distribution along the matured yielding pillar is presented in this paper. The chart was developed using ground penetrating radar (GPR) supported by borescope observations, focusing on monitoring the distribution of extension fracture.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel Project in Toronto extends approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. This project includes the installation of five intake shafts connected by 10.5 km of 6.3 m internal diameter tunnel and eleven drop shafts and vent shafts, connected to the tunnel by a series of adits. During the excavation of one of five intake shafts (20 m in diameter and 52 m deep), significant volumes of free phase oil and hydrocarbons were encountered. Due to the heavy inflows of the contaminants, excavation was stopped at the transition depth. The initial support of excavation needed to be redesigned, shaft had to be backfilled with CDF and installation of deeper secant piles are in progress to cut off contaminants. This paper outlines the initial plan for excavation as well as the design changes to the plan. The current status of the shaft excavation and lessons learned will be discussed.

Task analyses were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at four underground low-seam coal mines to evaluate their supply-handling systems and for use in subsequent design of laboratory simulation experiments. Items were tracked (by videotaping) from delivery to the surface storage areas to their final destinations underground. Of particular interest were those tasks that required manual handling of supplies or equipment. Analysis of the videotapes revealed that the miners handled materials while stooped over a total of 37.8 pct of the time, 31.5 pct while on both knees and 9.5 pct while kneeling on one knee. These working postures impose considerable stress on the lumbar spine and may be implicated in the high number of back injuries in this work population. This paper also discusses various mechanical-assist devices developed by the Bureau and successfully evaluated in the underground workplace. These devices can be used to minimize the manual effort and the corresponding risk of injury associated with handling supplies and equipment components in low-seam coal mines.

On July 20, 1990, a Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan was approved by MSHA for Jim Walter Resources, Inc. No. 5 Mine. The mine operated under the plan for twenty-nine shifts before MSHA revoked the plan. A total of fifty-five seals were constructed during the process of implementing the plan. The major difficulty in applying the control concept resulted from problems controlling leakage at the numerous seals. The number of seals was a direct consequence of attempting to merge the traditional bleeder system, used in all the Blue Creek Mines, with the bleederless system Jim Walter Resources proposed as a means of controlling the spontaneous combustion hazard. This paper discusses Jim Walter Resources experience with spontaneous combustion control and the new safety standard which applies to underground coal mines that demonstrate a history of spontaneous combustion and how this standard would apply to our No. 5 Mine. The new Ventilation Standards were published in the Federal Register on May 15, 1992, and scheduled to go into effect August 16, 1992.

In May 1993, SME contracted with The Dolecek Companies of Denver, CO to conduct a salary survey and a study of Mining Engineering. A written, four-page survey was sent to a random select sample of 1897 current SME members from the United States and Puerto Rico and to 40 current SME members from Canada. A total of 621 survey responses were input and analyzed, to guarantee the validity of the survey findings. The findings are representative of the entire SME membership. And the survey is within a statistical range of accuracy of plus or minus 5%. Salary survey SME members currently earn an average of approximately $60,000 a year. Some 45% earn less than $60,000 and 49% earn more than that. About 24% of all SME members earn $80,000 or more each year and 13% earn $100,000 or more. Not surprisingly, a statistically greater number of owners (27.5%) and those in senior management (30%) have a current income or salary of $100,000+ a year.

The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

"The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) recently completed the 24-foot diameter Euclid Creek Tunnel using a steel-fiber reinforced concrete segmental lining. During construction HMM, the McNally/Kiewit JV, CSI/Hanson JV, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fiber with synthetic fiber. A section of synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-situ lining was also placed as part of the permanent works for the starter and tail tunnels. Laboratory and field testing were performed on two complete segmental rings reinforced solely with synthetic fibers. This paper summarizes the testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced CIP lining and concrete segments. INTRODUCTION The principal feature of the Euclid Creek Tunnel (ECT) project is a CSO storage tunnel that is one component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s (NEORSD) Easterly CSO storage and conveyance system. The tunnel, shafts, and appurtenant facilities will be used for the collection and storage of CSOs from the northeastern part of Cleveland, Ohio and subsequent conveyance to the NEORSD’s Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The ECT project includes five drop shafts that extend as deep as 220 feet below the ground surface. The ECT alignment and shaft locations are shown in Figure 1. Traditionally in northeast Ohio, tunnel excavations were supported with a two-pass system using steel ribs and timber lagging, followed by cast-in-place concrete. Control of rock overbreak proved difficult with large-diameter two-pass operation, and invert degradation led to train derailments. To mitigate these risks, the ECT was supported using one-pass, precast, bolted, gasketed concrete segments reinforced with steel fiber alone. Tunneling operations were very successful and experienced no significant delays or claims. As a result of the positive ECT experience with steel fiber-reinforced segments, Hatch Mott MacDonald, LLC (HMM), McNally/Kiewit (MK) joint venture, CSI/Hanson (CSI/H) joint venture, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fibers with synthetic fibers in segmental rings. This paper presents the laboratory and field testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-place (CIP) lining and concrete segments."

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard-recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

Transitioning from diesel-powered loading and hauling machinery to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) responds to the need for deepening underground mines as regulations become tighter. When using BEVs, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions can be eliminated, and the energy required for the machines is used more effectively. Unlike their diesel counterparts, which are refueled, BEV loading and hauling machines — specifically, load haul dump (LHD) machines — can use battery swapping. This brings additional aspects to the operation that need to be considered, which have not yet been studied extensively. This study used discrete event simulation (DES) to analyze how the different numbers of BEV LHDs affect queueing and productivity when using different numbers of batteries and different swapping times in an underground block cave mine. The results identified the formation of working groups, where the machines swapped their batteries concurrently within each group, and their relation to the queueing time. Additionally, the minimum number of batteries per machine was identified to maximize productivity while minimizing queueing time. This study demonstrates DES as a powerful tool to assess and analyze conceptual systems and identify their underlying structures, which can enhance the deployment of BEV LHDs in underground block cave mine operations.
