Experimental results obtained on the recovery of below 0.5 x 10-3m coal fines by flotation employing geometrically similar columns of 0.056m, 0.080m, 0.100m and 0.220m diameter have been presented. The hydrodynamics of such a unit as well as its performance have been related to operating parameters to establish optimum conditions. The results have further been analysed critically in the light of the known relationship on the behaviour of similar systems to assign reasons for the critical factors established in a bid to reduce the empiricism required to be followed in the scale up of such a unit.

Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338°F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

The primary purpose of the Prototype Installation Facility (PIF) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in this conceptual design was to test the magnets and other physics equipment. PIF was located in the northwest quadrant of the SSC 54 mile (87 km) main ring and consists of the first segment of tunnels, approximately 17,060 lineal feet (5.2 km) of 12 foot inner-diameter (ID) (3.7 m) tunnel, three 250 ± foot (60 m) deep shafts, connecting tunnels, and associated niches and alcoves. PIF would be the first portion of the main ring collider tunnel to be constructed. The geology, underground excavation conditions, underground facilities, and contractual considerations are discussed.

Conflicts are common in the mining industry. Engineers are accustomed to addressing issues such as land use, air and water pollution, and health and safety. Although conflicts of interest are important in the industry, they do not have the impact on organizational decision making that controversy does. Controversy is a type of conflict, probably the most important type, for effective decision making and competent problem solving. It exists when one person's ideas, information, preference, choices, conclusions, theories, opinions, or perspectives are incompatible with another's and the two seek to reach an agreement (Johnson and Johnson, 1979). Interpersonal and intergroup controversy is prevalent in the day-to-day functioning of organizations. If constructively managed, this type of controversy has important implications for effective decision making and problem solving. Too few organizational members accept controversy, and almost none attempt to stimulate it. This is because too few of them understand controversy well enough to accept and use it effectively. Most organizational personnel lack the interpersonal skills needed to stimulate controversy and manage it effectively. Discussion of conflicting ideas may not be common in problem solving situations due to the fear and anxiety most people feel in conflict situations. Traditionally, organizations suppressed conflict. They believed it was avoidable, caused by management errors. Optimal organizational performance required its removal. Conflict, though, is inevitable. And optimal organizational performance requires a moderate level of conflict. Management should manage the level of conflict and its resolution, for optimal performance. The current view stresses the importance of controversy for learning. Confronting a person with a different point of view stimulates that person to gather more information to elaborate, justify, or provide rationale for their position. Controversy: Process and Outcomes The decision making process begins with participants categorizing and organizing current information and experiences so that a conclusion is derived. When participants present their conclusions to another group and realize their conclusions are being challenged, a state of internal conceptual conflict or uncertainty ensues. This uncertainty motivates the challenged group to actively search for more information, experiences, and a more adequate cognitive perspective and reasoning process to resolve the uncertainty. Participants will adapt their cognitive perspective and reasoning through understanding the perspective and reasoning of others to derive a new or reorganized conclusion. This process may be repeated several times before a decision is reached. The active search for additional information on the alternatives is also promoted, along with greater mastery and retention of information and a more accurate understanding of opposing viewpoints (perspective taking). Of the many positive outcomes of the use of controversy, the effect on higher level cognitive reasoning and processing is especially important in engineering decision making. Research has been done on expert-novice difference in medical diagnoses, physics problem solving, and geological exploration. It shows that preparation for verbal interaction and the actual verbal interaction with peers with differing view-points promotes the development of expertise. Constructive Controversy Conditions Some controversies among decision makers concerning their preferred solutions to a problem can be beneficial. But sometimes they are not. As with all types of conflict, the potential for either constructive or destructive outcomes is present. Whether the consequences are positive or negative depends on the controversy and the way it is managed. The conditions and procedures of controversy management that determine the outcome include: the goal structure within which the controversy occurs; the degree of heterogeneity of decision makers; the amount of relevant information distributed among decision makers; the ability of decision makers to disagree with each other without creating defensiveness; and the perspectivetaking skills of the decision makers. Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem.

The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead. Buttressing is a widely employed control measure for mitigating slope failure in various settings such as openpit mines, road sections, dams, and hilly or rocky terrains. This paper presents a study on the effects of buttressing, specifically concerning slide-head toppling failure. Drawing insights from a case study of slide-head toppling in Zambia, our investigation employs both analytical (limit equilibrium) and numerical (3DEC software) modeling techniques. The analytical and numerical models exhibit notable similarities in their schematics and overall results, revealing a subtle effect of buttressing in controlling slide-head toppling failure. This study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced role of buttressing in slope stability, with implications for optimizing buttress design parameters. While the overall findings suggest a modest influence of buttressing on slide-head toppling failure, further discussions delve into the specific implications and potential refinements for practical applications.

Innovative hard rock narrow-vein, longwall, and stope leach mining systems concepts are described and evaluated economically. The principal tool proposed for use in these systems for both mine development and production is the U.S. Bureau of Mines radial-axial splitter. The mining systems concepts are prefeasibility level costed and projected to be cost competitive for steeply dipping veins, 0.6-1.2 m wide, for horizontal tabular ores 2 m -5 m thick, and for leachable ores with greater than a 1.7:1 stripping ratio. In all of the systems the orebody, less swell, is retained underground for use as backfill.

Experimentation was per formed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved with a 75% P2O5 recovery.

A comprehensive flotation study has been conducted on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The results are compared with those for a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4% to 5% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity than the concentrate produced by up to six stages using a conventional mechanical cell. The results also show that the packed-column flotation process is particularly suitable for the recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

The Rosebud district is located in the Kamma Mountains, southeast of the townsite of Sulphur, Nevada. Since discovery in 1989, LAC Minerals, in joint venture with Equinox Resources, has delineated a resource containing approximately 570,000 ounces of gold and 5,500,000 ounces of silver. The deposit is of the volcanic-hosted epithermal quartz-sericite type. Mineralization occurs in tabular zones in and along the hanging wall of the South Ridge fault, and in cross-cutting high-angle structures. Multiple stages of discontinuous stockwork gold-and silver-bearing quartz-calcite-clay veins cut variably clay-altered, silicified, and sericitized rhyolitic Miocene volcanic rocks.

Arsenic sulfide (orpiment, realgar, amorphous AsS and As2S3) oxidation rates were measured in mixed flow reactors at pH-2 and at temperatures of 25 ° to 30 °C. The measured oxidation rates for arsenic sulfide solids by dissolved oxygen are in the range of 10-11 to 10-10 mole m-2s-1 after being normalized to final surface area. The order of arsenic sulfide oxidation rates decreases at pH-2 from amorphous AsS > realgar > orpiment > amorphous As2S3. Compared to pyrite, arsenic sulfide oxidation rates are approximately 1.5 to 15 times slower than pyrite oxidation rates at pH-2.

Previous applications for using waste rock for backfilling in South African gold mines were reviewed and it was found that in many cases the mechanical equipment selected and the design philosophy applied did not meet the requirements. A more simplified system configuration is proposed, which allows the equipment to be relocated as mining progresses. Innovative high-intensity grinding and dense-phase pumping technology are proposed to provide a low-porosity backfill with a particle top size of 5 mm to 8 mm. According to recent rock mechanics modeling work, this comminuted waste backfill material can provide a good compromise between underground support characteristics and reliable hydraulic transportation behavior.

The length of Alaska’s coastline, combined with the presence of a significant number of fjords, encourages consideration of marine disposal of mine tailings. However, since various factors govern the viability of the submarine tailings disposal (STD) option, the decision making process is complex. An expert system, called Submarine Tailings Disposal Expert System (STADES) that will help mining project planners explore the feasibility of STD, was developed. Existing literature, supplemented by engineering recommendations, on the various aspects of marine disposal of tailings was reviewed and formed the knowledge base for the expert system. The shell used to develop the expert system was LEVEL5®.

The Bureau of Reclamation's Syar Tunnel project included excavation of a 9.2 kilometer (5.7 mile) long, 3.6 meter (11.8 ft) diameter tunnel through gently dipping sedimentary rocks consisting of shales, siltstones, sandstones and limestone. The tunnel was supported full length with precast concrete invert segments and lightweight steel sets and lagging. Several world records for advance rate were set, including 57 meters (187 ft) in an eight hour shift and 127 meters (417 ft) in a 24 hour day. The tunneling system utilized a remanufactured and modified Robbins hardrock TBM and a 9,280 meter (30,450 ft) long, 61 centimeter (24 inch) wide, continuous conveyor system.

The importance of fluorspar to the United States and the world and the role it plays in industry and society extend far beyond that which is suggested by its measured production and consumption quantities and declared value. Compared to many other industrial minerals, the annual worldwide consumption of 5 million short tons valued at less than $500 million are not impressive figures. Fluorspar is made special primarily because of its status as a critical and strategic commodity; it is essential for the processing of most steels and all aluminum. It also is the raw material for the production of elemental fluorine, which plays a part in uranium refining.

Observations of calcite and opal in cavities in the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain indicate that: 1) seeps are not regularly spaced in underground workings and not all fractures sustain flow, 2) many cavities represent sites of seepage that have remained stable for millions of years, 3) typically there is no evidence (such as dripstone) for seepage dripping into cavities from their ceilings, and 4) seepage is not likely to be greater than about 1 liter of water per year (per 5-m-long drift) based on calcite abundances observed in the ESF. This estimate of seepage is significantly lower than that used for performance assessment.

This paper summarizes the results of treating arsenic­bearing refractory gold concentrates from six gold Mines of Chi­na by using bioleaching method and discusses the conditions of bioleaching processes. Results indicate that Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans T-3 Strain can intensely oxidize arsenopyrite, how­ever oxidation rate and degree differe considerably for different. During initial inoculation of 5 X 106 cell/ml. FeH contration generaly 4 -8 g/1. Sample size > 80 % - 3 20 mesh and pulp density 10 % ( w /v) and leaching time ,1 -- G clays, arsenic re­moval rate reached more than 80 % , Fe extraction ,10 - GO% desulfurization rate 30-45% after bacterial oxidation of 4-G days.
