Rhodes Mining NL, Perth, Australia, is developing the Lahoca Gold Project which is located in Hungary, about 30 km from the town of Eger. The preliminary resource is estimated to contain approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold. The project is being evaluated for an annual process capacity of 2 million tonnes. The test samples contain just over 2 g Ault and 6% sulfur as sulfide. Copper and arsenic levels are approximately 0.2 and 0.1 %, respectively. The ore is refractory due to submicroscopic gold occurrences and structural associations with pyrite. A small amount of the gold is finely encapsulated in quartz. Approximately 30% of the gold in the crushed ore is soluble in cyanide and up to about 55% is cyanide-recoverable with ultra­fine grinding. The ore has little preg-robbing ability. Metallurgical test work done by Colorado Minerals Research Institute (CMRI) and other investigators has shown that as much as 85 to over 90% of the gold was recovered by the relatively severe conditions of pressure oxidation or roasting of the whole ore or a flotation concentrate. The Lahoca ore responds to flotation with gold recoveries of 87% into a low grade concentrate. Subsequently, with a view toward defining a process route with potentially more attractive economics, Rhodes Mining and CMRI conducted an extensive review of biooxidation technologies and concluded that, in particular, heap biooxidation methods promised lower process costs which normally are associated with heap leaching. Based on the study, which included the analysis of the closely related practices of copper dump/heap bioleaching now well established in that industry, CMRI conducted simulated heap biooxidation experiments which evaluated factors such as ultra fine ore crushing, agglomeration techniques, heap design, forced aeration oxygen supply, and whether or not the heap is irrigated. Separate flask biooxidation tests at Little Bear Laboratories showed that the finely crushed ore is biooxidized readily, with a near linear relationship between sulfide oxidation and gold cyanide solubility. Gold recoveries of as high as 66% have resulted after biooxidation of crushed ore. This paper highlights the metallurgical developments of the Lahoca project, and focuses on recent biooxidation laboratory test work aimed at enhancing the treatment of crushed ore.

Conventional Smelting Practice Conventional copper smelting practice varies from smelter to smel¬ter, but generally consists of some or all of the following unit processes: roasting, smelting, converting, and fire refining. Roasting. Copper sulfide concentrates can be smelted directly or after an initial roasting step. Roasting is used in some smelters because roasting prior to smelting increases smelting capacity, less energy is required to melt hot roaster calcines than wet sulfide concen¬trates, roaster off gases are high in Sot concentration, 5-15% SO2, and some volatile impurities are removed from the concentrate prior to smelting. However, many smelters do not use roasters, because the problems associated with handling hot dry calcines outweigh the advantages mentioned. Concentrate roasting is performed in multiple hearth or fluid bed roasters. If the moisture is low, roasting can be performed autogenously, usually at 500-600°C. High roasting temperatures are avoided because excess oxidation of the iron compounds may lead to magnetite formation. Magnetite is detrimental to reverb operation because mag¬netite can combine with refractory minerals to form a highly viscous slag. This slag prohibits efficient matte-slag separation and leads to excessive copper losses. Also, magnetite can settle through the matte layer, deposit on the furnace bottom, and consequently reduce furnace capacity. Roasting is carried out only on sulfide concentrates prior to smelt¬ing in reverb or electric furnaces. For smelting processes, such as the flash and continuous that rely on the exothermic heat of oxidation of the sulfur minerals, roasting is not practiced. Reverberatory Smelting. The predominate copper smelting fur¬nace for the past 50 years has been the reverb. These furnaces are typically 100-120 ft long, 30-35 ft wide, and 12-15 ft high. A typical furnace layout is shown in Fig. 2. Refractory brick linings cover all internal surfaces of the furnace. Originally the flame was directed to reverberate or reflect off the furnace ceiling and melt the feed material. Current practice is to direct the flame down the furnace length to melt the concentrate. A method of charging the concentrates or calcines, generally along the side walls to minimize refractory erosion, is incorporated in the furnace design. The copper concentrates, calcines, and fluxes charged into the reverb undergo a series of complicated reactions as the temperature of the mixture increases. The reaction of the iron and copper sulfides with the oxygen in the furnace produces a molten Cu25-FeS mixture called matte. Copper smelting metallurgy is based on the fact that sulfur has a greater affinity for copper than for iron and most other common metals. Therefore, in a system containing copper, the copper will preferentially remain as a sulfide compound until all of the other metals have been oxidized. The oxidized metals combine with silica to form a silicate slag that floats on the matte and is removed from the system. Reverberatory furnace smelting chemistry can be approximated by the following chemical equations: FeS2 + O2 - FeS+ SO2 (1) The formation of FeS ensures that any copper present other than as sulfides will be reduced by the relationship: CuO2 + 2FeS + O2 - CuS + 2FeO+SO2 (2) or 2Cu +FeS - Cu2S + Fe (3) As the molten charge travels down the furnace, continued oxida¬tion of the iron minerals and sulfurization of the copper minerals occurs. When all of the copper has been converted to sulfides, the iron sulfides can then be further oxidized as: FeS + (3)2 O2 FeO + SiO2 (4) The FeO reacts with the silica added as flux in the furnace charge. A simplified equation is: FeO + SiO2 -FeO SiO2 (5) The iron silicate slag formed is skimmed from the surface at the end opposite the burners. The copper content of reverb slag is usually less than 0.6% Cu and is discarded. Matte is removed along the side wall and is taken to the converter for oxidation of the remaining sulfur and iron. The main objectives in reverberatory smelting are to produce a molten Cu2S-FeS matte containing 30-60% Cu and a throwaway slag. Production of matte permits complete conversion of all copper minerals into copper sulfides, which can migrate because of specific gravity differences, through the lighter slag layer. Also, the molten matte droplets collect the noble metals, gold and silver, as the matte settles in the furnace. The large settling area of the furnace provides enough separation time to produce a low grade slag, which can be discarded without further processing. High heat losses are associated with reverberatory smelting be¬cause of the large volume of gases sweeping through the furnace. Therefore, an outside source of heat is required to keep the smelting reaction going. Natural gas, fuel oil, or pulverized coal are used as this heat source.

5.1 INTRODUCTION Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for exploitation of low-grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successfu1, ore must exhibit certain characteristics, as previously discussed in Chapter 1. Primary among the necessary ore characteristics is that the ore must have good permeability after being crushed or treated and stacked into heaps if uniform distribution of the cyanide leach solution is to be achieved. Gold and silver ores containing excessive amounts of clays or fines generated by crushing are some of the most difficult to treat successfully by heap leaching. The presence of excessive amounts of slimes (generally classified as minus 50-micron or 270 Tyler mesh sieve size particles) in the heap leach feed will slow the percolation flow of the leach solution, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap, causing the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than to penetrate the ore heap. The problem of heap leaching ores containing fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the ore heaps, because natural sorting of coarse and fine material occurs during these steps (Johanson, 1978). This phenomenon results in a concentration of ore fines at the center of individual ore piles and a concomitant concentration of larger rock fragments on the lower slopes and base of the piles. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off prior to installation of the sprinkling system which delivers the leach solution, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. The segregation results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. As a consequence, the leach solutions follow the path of least resistance, percolating downward through the coarse ore regions and bypassing or barely wetting areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective utilization of marginal gold and silver resources through heap leach processing requires the development of new methods in order to achieve more uniform size distribution during ore heap preparation and better slime control during leaching.

Introduction The success of in situ leaching depends upon: • maintaining adequate injection and recovery flow capacities in wells, and • distributing leach solution effectively to contact and leach ore minerals within the target zone. Solution balance is an important indicator of the capability of a particular in situ hydrologic design to efficiently and effectively control and distribute leach solution within the target ore zone. As part of ongoing hydrological investigations into in situ leaching, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is studying factors affecting solution balance in an unsaturated copper ore deposit at the Cyprus Casa Grande Mine. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of hydrogeologic features and in situ operating conditions on changes, during leaching, in: • solution storage within the deposit, and • solution balance. At the Casa Grande Mine, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility, solution balance estimates are obtained for 10 selected intervals during 17 months of leaching under a variety of well configurations, pressures and flow conditions. Operational and geological description The Casa Grande Mine is located 32 miles south of Casa Grande, AZ. The mining area is within the Casa Grande Deposit, a porphyry copper stock consisting primarily of an intensely-fractured, granodiorite cap overlying a copper sulfide base. As a result of mine dewatering activity, unsaturated conditions existed in the deposit prior to leaching (Schmidt et al., 1990; Friedel and Schmidt, 1991). No groundwater was present in any of the in-situ-leaching, test-facility wells after drilling and prior to leach solution injection. Also, no ground water seepage occurs in the test-facility drift. The Casa Grande, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility consists of 58 injection and recovery wells collared in an underground drift. The wells were drilled at various angles into the granodiorite deposit in a series of 15 divergent fans (Fig. 1). The fans are 12.5 ft apart and lie parallel to one another between the 900- and 1100-level drifts. Each fan contains three to five wells drilled at angles ranging from 6° to 89° from the horizontal. The wells can operate in an injection or a recovery mode. Currently, 36 flow sensors and 28 pressure transducers (part of a hydrologic, data acquisition system) are used to continuously monitor injection-well flow rates and pressures.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).'O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

"Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

First reports of microbial coal solubilization appeared in the early 1980's (Fakoussa, 1981; Fakoussa and Truper, 1983; Cohen and Gabriele, 1982). These degradations, which occurred at ambient temperature and pressure, resulted in a dark brown to black viscous liquid and required days to weeks to occur. Rates and degrees of coal biodegradation varied from coal to coal. Hard coals were not extensively degraded (5-7%) while low-rank coals such as Leonardite, a sublignite, were completely solubilized. A correlation between degree of weathering or oxidation of coal and the coals susceptibility to biological attack was observed. This led to oxidative pretreatments as a method to enhance microbial degradation of coal (Strandberg and Lewis, 1986). Products of microbial degradation of coal are water soluble solids that do not have significant solubilities in organic solvents (Wilson, et. al., 1987; Quigley, et. al., 1987; Quigley, et. al., 1988a). Solutions of solubilized coal did not separate or form precipitates which suggested that they were true solutions and not colloidal suspensions. Biosolubilized coal contained more oxygen than starting material suggesting that microbial attack of coals involved oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds. This small change in oxygen content was the only change observed in coal structure during the biosolubilization process. Many coal solubilizing microorganisms have been isolated. Some are lignin degrading organisms such as Phanerochaete chrysosporium and various Streptomyces species (Gupta, et. al., 1988; Wilson, et. al., 1987). This was not unexpected since the structures of lignin and low-rank coals are similar. These organisms produce an enzyme complex, ligninase, that utilizes hydrogen peroxide to oxidatively cleave the bond between a and ß carbons of an aliphatic chain bound to an aromatic nucleus. Another important organism is Trametes versacolor (syn. Coriolus versacolor, Polyporus versacolor). Even though this organism produces a ligninase (Dodson, et.al., 1987), coal solubilization has been attributed to the enzyme laccase (Pyne, et. al., 1987). Laccase utilizes molecular oxygen to oxidatively cleave a - ß bonds using a mechanism similar to that observed for ligninases (Kawai, et. al., 1988). Other coal solubilizing microorganisms have been isolated from coal outcrops (Ward, 1985; Ward, 1988), but enzyme activities responsible for coal solubilization have not been identified. "This study adopts and analyzed a shield tunneling case in Taiwan, with a diameter from 5.25m to 6.70m and the smallest radius of curvature 100m, which was constructed in gravel formations as well as a vibration sensitive area. In this case study, a vibration monitoring plan, comprising the sensors inside the shield machine and on the surface, was proposed and performed to provide the vibration data during the construction. In this project, the major vibration reduction considerations were increasing the open ratio of the cutter head (to reduce the cutting function) and reducing the rotational speed of the cutter head. The results of the construction suggest the appropriateness of the above considerations. The findings could provide suggestions to the other similar shield tunneling cases. INTRODUCTION Underground vibrations during shield tunneling are typically isolated and absorbed by the soil. However, a portion of these vibrations may disseminate to the surface. These vibrations are considered micro-vibrations, which generally do not pose a threat to surface structures, and are thus seldom the focus of research. The present project was located in the Hsinchu Science Park where shield excavation bypassed numerous high technology manufacturing plants (e.g., wafer manufacturing plants). The vibrations generated by shield tunneling may affect the vibration-sensitive manufacturing equipment and instruments in these plants, and induce problems in manufacturing processes. Therefore, research to comprehensively understand the characteristics and potential influence of such vibrations is essential. To clarify the characteristics and potential influences of vibrations generated during shield tunneling, the vibration level in the excavation of the Taoyuan International Airport Access (TIAA) Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Project was examined, as it possesses similar excavation conditions to the present project. The parameters collected from relevant tests were provided as a reference to the firms along the excavation route of the present project to explain the effects of vibrations, and to relevant units for shield machine selection and project execution. No yield problems resulting from shield machine induced vibrations were reported by the firms, and the vibration levels measured in the present project were comparatively lower than those in the TIAA MRT Project. Because the related literature is scarce, this study aims to analyze the collected measurement data and provide suggestions on shield machine selection or designs. Such that we can more properly evaluate and control the impact of shield tunneling induced vibrations in similar projects."

"INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."

Carbon dioxide, a by-product of combustion reactions, is a greenhouse gas linked to climate change. At Michigan Technological University, we have studied the capture of CO2 using alkali scrubbing solutions in a pilot scale packed bed counter-current scrubbing column. To do this, we have simulated flue gas by combining streams of CO2 and compressed air. Real flue gas has impurities such as CO, SO2, and NOx, and has lower levels of O2 than our simulated flue gas. In order to study CO2 capture from a real flue gas, the Department of Chemical Engineering worked with the Facilities department to install a pilot scale scrubbing column in the Michigan Tech steam plant. Experiments were conducted using a sample stream of the flue gas from the boiler in the steam plant. Data collected from these experiments were compared to the data collected from identical experiments conducted on simulated flue gas in the lab. The capture efficiency of the real flue gas scrubbing column is discussed in this paper. BACKGROUND The most common equipment used to separate CO2 from a flue gas stream is a counter-current packed-bed scrubbing column. The department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University has two such pilot scale columns. In order to study the effect of impurities found in real flue gas, one is installed in a controlled laboratory using a simulated flue gas created by mixing CO2 and compressed air. This column will be used to establish a baseline for percent capture analysis and is displayed by figure 1. The second scrubbing column is identical to the first, and is installed in the Michigan Tech central energy plant. The plant produces up to 130,000 lb/hr of 80 psig steam to provide hot water and heat for campus buildings. A typical wintertime load burns around 25,000 SCFH of natural gas; this load releases 1.4 metric tons of CO2 per hour. The flue gas the steam plant produces is roughly 7.5% CO2 by volume. In order to study CO2 capture from this flue gas, a tap has been installed on the main exhaust duct which draws a sample of the flue gas into the pilot scale scrubbing column. Figure 2, a simplified diagram of the steam plant, shows that the tap was installed between the economizer and the stack condenser.

During the gold cyanidation process, cyanide can be lost from the leachate by various chemical routes. The products of these cyanide losses include base metal cyanide complexes, thio­cyanate and cyanate. These losses are particularly important when treating pyritic or cupriferous ores since the two most sig­nificant cyanic ides, in order of importance, are sulfides and cop­per bearing minerals (I). Cyanidation of pyritic minerals results in the formation of thiocyanate. The problems caused by cyanide soluble copper minerals are well known to the gold processing industry and have been reviewed by several authors (e.g. 2, 3). An important consider­ation, especially with a number of more recent leaching tech­nologies, is the effect of the CN :Cu mole ratio, R, on the gold leaching kinetics. In order to efficiently leach cupriferous ores, it is important that R is maintained at a level that allows suffi­ciently rapid leaching without excessive use of cyanide. The optimum value for R in a fixed leaching system would appear to lie between 3 and 4. This is based on the early observations that the leaching rate is very slow when R is below 3, with a rapid increase in the leaching rate above 3 (2, 3,4). The leaching rate increases gradually when R is greater than 4 (4). The major Cu(I)-cyanide complex in this range of R values is the [Cu(CN)J]2· species. It has been postulated that leaching occurs due to either uncomplexed cyanide or the fourth ligand in [Cu(CN)4]3·, since the stepwise formation constant for this complex is very small (2, 3). An additional consideration when leaching cupriferous ores is the oxidation of cyanide by Cu(II) minerals, resulting in the formation of cyanate. It has also been reported that both sulfide minerals (5) and activated carbon (6, 7) catalyse the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate. From the above discussion, it is important for the leaching con­ditions to be carefully controlled when treating pyritic and cuprifer­ous ores in order to achieve efficient and economically viable leach­ing. For example, large concentrations of thiocyanate in the leachate would reveal large cyanide losses and thus indicate the need for a pretreatment step to oxidize the sulfides. Alternatively, a low R value would indicate slow leaching kinetics and consequent low gold recoveries, indicating the need for increased cyanide dosage.

For some time, selenate has eluded water treatment by conven­tional means such as precipitation and clarification. This has been due to the nearly universal solubility of all oxidized sele­nium species, the low levels required for surface discharge, and almost identical chemical behavior to all forms of oxidized sul­fur. The last characteristic makes selenate particularly difficult to deal with in acid mine waters where sulfate can easily be on the order of one gram per liter. Approaches such as ion exchange or reverse osmosis often tum into total demineraliza­tion schemes for the sake of removing a "trace" selenium species that may be present on the order of 108 sulfate/selenate. Reduction of selenate to selenite or elemental selenium by chemical means has been relatively unresearched. Some limit­ed success has been reported (Murphy, 1988) using ferrous hydroxide as a reducing agent; however, the reaction time as reported is too slow to be useful in a practical plant design. One significant difference between selenate and sulfate is that selenate has been discovered to be reducible in acid solution by elemental iron when catalyzed by soluble copper. Since the +4 or zero valence states of selenium are rather easy to deal with by coprecipitation with iron salts or alum, the elemental iron dis­solved in the process contributes to the overall process by pro­viding sludge upon raising the pH that can be separated by con­ventional clarification. Commercial production of selenium using copper catalyzed reduction of selenite to selenium metal via sulfur dioxide is well established, however, at the < 5 ppb requirements for surface discharge this reduction process equili­brates at levels far too high to be useful to low level selenate removal criteria. The reaction reported herein uses elemental iron for reduction of selenate with copper acting either as a cata­lyst or as a coprecipitation agent. This method, employed with conventional sludging, clarification and filtration can provide an economic method to achieve non detectable selenium (< 0.005 mg/I). Iron consumptions for the conditions tested have been on the order of 3 lbs/1,000 gallons treated. This represents as little as $0.06 or $2.00 per 1,000 gallons based on using a scrap source of iron or the purchase of electrolytic iron for the process.

Separating oil shale from waste material or into high- and low-grade fractions can have a major economic influence on the surface retorting process. Different shale rock components vary significantly in physical and surface chemical properties, such as specific gravity, color, and water wettability. Various techniques that use the differences in one or more of these properties have been proposed to preconcentrate oil shale before retorting. This article discusses some proposed techniques, such as gravity separation, sorting, and froth flotation. Retorting oil shale is the most common method for recovering oil from the rock. This process is accomplished either underground (in situ) or above ground (ex-situ or surface retorting). Both techniques have serious limitations, such as low recoveries in the underground method and the ability to process rich shales only in the above ground retorting method. Also, environmental problems are associated with both techniques. Some of these limitations could be overcome if feed to the retorts is of consistent grade. This could be achieved by selecting appropriate sites for in situ retorting and selective mining for surface oil shale retorting. Both of these, however, would have a serious economic impact on shale oil recovery. Obviously, little control can be exercised over preparing feed material in the in situ retorting process, but beneficiation of oil shale could definitely be advantageous in surface retorting, and should have positive influence on the overall economics of recovering oil from the shales. For example, preconcentration of mined shale could result not only in reduced costs for materials handling, but also in waste disposal costs, since waste characteristics before and after the retorting process are significantly different. Upgrading the oil shale might also allow substitution of alternate technology for retorting as well as extend the process to recover oil from marginal deposits. Also, the separated material may become a potential source for recovering other values from shale deposits. Overall, the incentives for preconcentration are to reduce costs and improve thermal efficiency of the recovery process. Oil Shale Properties Important to Preconcentration Oil shale is a carbonaceous rock assaying 5-30% organic material (kerogen) and 70-95% ash-forming minerals. Kerogen is soft, nonbrit¬tle or semi-brittle material, and generally forms a matrix between irregularly distributed mineral grains. Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation&apos;s first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12&apos;, 16&apos;, and 20&apos; lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

INTRODUCTION The Panna Maria Uranium Project is located in South Texas, between San Antonio and Corpus Cristi, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Karnes City, Texas. The tailings disposal facilities are located immediately south of the mill area and the central portion of the west pit. The mine and mill drainage pond is located north of the tailings pond. Location of the facilities is shown in Figure 1. The tailings pond is a disposal area for mill process wastes and has a capacity for storage of approximately 9 million metric tons (10 million tons) of tailings. This capacity is adequate for approximately 10 years of milling at a maximum rate of 2,700 metric tons (3,000 tons) per day. The tailings disposal facilities were designed to essentially eliminate discharge of contaminated waters to preclude degradation of surface streams or ground water. Water levels in the ponds will be maintained. through reuse in the mill and by evaporation. WASTE CHARACTERISTICS The sources of waste that is stored in the tailings pond include runoff from the mill area and tailings from the mill processing. The tailings consist of a sand slime slurry; the percentage passing the No. 200 sieve varies depending on the ore material, and it is generally in the range of 10 to 25 percent. The tailings have a density of approximately 1.2 metric tons per cu m (75 lb per cu ft) and an average specific gravity of 2.55. The liquid effluent from the mill consists of waste solutions from the grinding, leaching, extraction, and washing circuits of the mill. These solutions have an initial pH of 1.5 to 2.0 and contain the remnants of the leaching agents used in the mill process, sulfates, some silica as the primary dissolved solid, and trace quantities of soluble metals. This liquid is discharged with the solids into the tailings pond and is diluted by rainfall and runoff from the tailings dam. Runoff from the mill area, drainage from the mine area, and de-oiled water from truck washing facilities is discharged into the mine and mill drainage pond. Runoff from the mill area drains approximately 28 hectares (70 acres) from offices, shops, the mill site, the ore pad, haul roads, and adjacent areas. Mine drainage is collected in the mine area and pumped to the mine and mill drainage pond.

In 1991, US mine production of barite decreased 3.4%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 11.7%. Imports also decreased by 15.4% over 1990. World mine production increased I%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, increased 3.3% according to the Bureau. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1991 increased from $40.61/t ($36.84/st) in 1990 to $42.35/t ($38.42/st), the Bureau stated. Nevada was the leading producer of barite with 78% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 75% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 93% was used in drilling fluids. The remaining 7% was in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 860. That was 14.9% less than the 1990 average of 1010 in the US. Crude barite imports were 138 kt (152,000 st) less than 1990 or 15.4%. Imports accounted for 70% of the (ap¬parent) barite consumed in the US. During 1991, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the US with 85.1 %. India followed with 14.8%. About 97.5% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector. Ground barite imports decreased from 56.7 to 46.2 kt (62,500 to 51,000 st) 1991. Mexico was a major exporter to the US, accounting for 75.3% of the total ground barite imports. Canada shipped 23.7%, while other countries accounted for less than 1 %, primarily for the nonoilfield market. During 1991, the number of grinding plants supplying the drilling fluids market along the Gulf Coast was reduced from 12 to 10. Stone, one of the oldest building materials, today remains a well-established material throughout the construction industry. The use of natural stone is much less prevalent now than in the past. It is still widely considered to be the most aesthetically pleasing, prestigious, and durable building material. New and re-opened quarries are coming onstream to meet increased demand related to new building technology and increased residential use of stone. CLASSIFICATION No classification can completely eliminate overlap between dimension stone, aggregate, and decorative stone because most stone is multi-purpose. Many used for decorative purposes are not produced specifically for that end use. Rock otherwise considered waste in dimension stone or aggregate quarries can be decorative stone coproducts (Fig. 1). Many uses require a compromise between decorative and structural qualities (Bowles, 1992, written commu¬nication). Shipley (1945) used decorative stone interchangeably with or¬namental stone. Gary et al. (1972) defined decorative stone as that used for architectural decoration, such as mantels, columns, and store fronts, but added that it is sometimes set with silver or gold in jewelry as curio stones. Bates and Jackson (1987) also restricted decorative stone to that used for architectural decoration. Meanings of otherwise identical terms used in the stone industry differ be¬tween geologists, engineers, and quarriers. They often carry a much broader meaning for quarriers and engineers compared to their very specific use by geologists (Makens et al., 1972). Decorative stone, including ornamental stone, is more broadly defined by geologists as any stone used primarily for its color, texture, and general appearance. It is not used primarily for its strength or durability, such as construction stone, or in specific sizes, such as dimension stone. The decorative stone industry uses a much wider range of stone types compared to stone that is dimensioned. Decorative stone usually serves some structural pur¬pose, but is not load-bearing to any great extent. Weak or costly stones serve in decorative, not structural, applications. STATISTICS AND END USES Decorative and dimension stone data are difficult to separate because the US Bureau of Mines keeps statistics only on dimension stone and crushed stone. The value of domestic dimension stone production in 1990, which includes some decorative stone, was about $210 million compared to imports of about $524 million and exports of about $35 million. Production was 1 080 t of which at least one-third was for decorative uses (Taylor, 1992). The principal uses are rough blocks in building construction (23%) and monu¬ments (18%); the remainder is used as ashlar (18%), curbing (12%), and miscellaneous (29%). Major rock types are granite (50%), limestone (30%), sandstone (10%), slate (3%), marble (2%), and other (5%) (Harben, 1990). Crushed stone valued at $5.6 billion was produced in the United States in 1990 by 1700 companies operating 3400 active quarries in 48 states (Tepordei, 1991). About 52% is used in con¬struction, 9% in cement and lime manufacturing, 2% in agricul¬ture, 2% in industrial uses, and 35% for unspecified uses including decorative aggregate. Limestone and dolomite comprise about 71%, granite 14%, and traprock 8% of the stone crushed in the United States. The remaining 7% are, in descending quantity, sandstone, quartzite, miscellaneous rock, marble, shell, calcareous marl, volcanic cinder and scoria, and slate. The basic types of decorative stone are: rough stone, aggregate, cut or dressed stone, and manmade stone [(Table 1)]. Rough Stone Rough stone is used as it is found in nature with very limited processing such as minor hand shaping, edge fitting, and size or quality sorting (Perath, 1992, written communication). This stone type is often marketed locally in relatively small tonnages and includes fieldstone and flagstone. The primary end uses of rough stone are landscaping, edging, paving, or large individual stone landscape or interior accents [(Fig. 2)]. Fieldstone: Fieldstone is picked up or pried out of the ground (gleaned) without extensive quarrying and includes garden or large landscaping boulders (Austin et al., 1990, Hansen, 1969). Boulders and cobbles may be split or roughly trimmed for use in rubble walls and veneers, both interior and exterior. Popular fieldstone rock types include sandstone, basalt, limestone, gneiss, schist, quartzite, and granite, but many others are suitable. Much fieldstone is col¬lected by individuals or small companies because the industry is labor intensive and markets are small. The stone may be sold locally in small quantities from the back of vehicles (Austin et al., 1990). Fieldstone includes many rock types, sizes, and shapes with the only common denominator that it must be set by hand and be durable (Power, 1992, written communication). Moss Rock. Moss rock is fieldstone partially covered by algae, mosses, lichens, and fungi that give the rock an aged and variegated patina (Austin et al., 1990). The plants are supported by moisture and nutrients in the stone. Moss rock is used for landscaping, walls, and fireplaces. Although almost any durable rock can be a moss rock, most are slabby or rounded sandstone and limestone (Fig. 3). Flagstone: Flagstone or flagging consist of thin irregular slabs used for paving, walkways, and wall veneers. Random-shaped flagging is produced widely in the United States. Suitable stone

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group&apos;s new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem&apos;s work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. INTRODUCTION The first portion of this chapter is concerned primarily with the contamination aspects of fine coal cleaning that include both the solids and water discharged as waste products after coal preparation. Topics include characteristics of the water and solids, changes that occur to both of these phases during use and after impoundment, as well as the impact that these changes have on unit operations and the environment. Attention is also given to the formation of acid mine drainage and treatment options that may facilitate reuse of the water. The second part of the chapter analyzes the problem of air contaminants from coal preparation plants including analysis of air pollutants and control methods. An overview of air quality regulations is also presented; most provisions have little or no applicability to coal preparation plant operation but are presented to provide an understanding of end-user constraints. The final part of the chapter emphasizes the long-range problem of refuse disposal and control. An overview of characterization, maintenance, and control of the refuse area is presented, as well as design guidelines. A brief review of stability analysis procedures is also included. PREPARATION PLANT WATER Characteristics of Makeup Water for Coal Preparation There are few specific rules governing the quality of makeup water used in coal preparation processes.&apos;" It is generally accepted, however, that the solid matter content should be less than 5%. The solids concentration in plant makeup water typically varies between 0.25 to 0.9 lb per gal (30 to 110 g/L) and may reach concentrations as high as 1.7 lb per gal (200 g/L). The water used in coal preparation is usually obtained from one or more of the following sources: public supplies, rivers and streams, canals, mine water, and wells. In most cases, water is obtained at the lowest cost including any necessary treatment. A major portion of the recirculated water is clarified by thickeners and settling ponds to remove fine coal and clay particles. Sufficient water is generally available to meet the needs of coal preparation in most areas. It has been estimated that approximately 65 to 70% of the makeup water used in a coal preparation plant comes from surface sources. It is important to note that a variety of substances are commonly found in natural water supplies, whatever the available source may be (Table 11-1). Excessive concentrations of some of those substances can have an affect on plant performance; the effect of specific contaminants on unit operations will be discussed
