"Scheelite is the main raw material in tungsten production. In hydrometallurgical processes, extraction of tungstate ions into solution is very important. During the leaching of scheelite in oxalic acid solutions, tungsten dissolves as a chelate complex. Scheelite includes impurities along with calcium tungstate. Determination of the dissolution of these impurities is important in the subsequent tungsten production stages. In this study, scheelite was dissolved in oxalic acid solutions and the dissolution of impurities was investigated. The quantities of dissolved impurities were determined by ICP - OES and characterization of the undissolved impurities in the leach residues was carried out by SEM - EDS analysisIntroductionScheelite and wolframite ores are used for the industrial production of tungsten. Both ores are dissolved in acidic or basic solutions, and ammonium paratungstate is obtained as an intermediate product. Prior to crystallisation of ammonium paratungstate, all the impurities must be removed. Among these, Fe, Si, P, Mn, Mg and Mo are classified as ""harmful"" elements and different methods are used for their removal [1]. During purification, solvent extraction, ion exchange, etc. methods are used.Potashnikov et al. [2] studied the dissolution of scheelite in acidic solutions and the effects of stirring speed, temperature and oxalic acid concentration on the dissolution kinetics.There are no works in the literature about the removal of impurities from scheelite ores in oxalic acid solutions. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the dissolution mechanisms of impurities during the leaching of scheelite in oxalic acid solutions. The effects of temperature and oxalic acid concentration on the dissolution were also investigated. In addition, the characterization of the impurities which were not dissolved was studied."

Managers are frequently faced with the decision to perform a task or manufacture an object in-house or to hire an outside vendor to perform the function. Outsourcing decisions are usually driven by economics: work is outsourced if it can be completed at a lower cost or in a shorter time than it can in-house. A technique termed incremental analysis can be used to make this decision. Incremental analysis examines the financial impact of outsourcing decisions as a function of the firm's fixed and variable operating costs. To use this tool, individual components of production cost are identified as being either constant or varying with levels of production activity. The assignment of cost type can be made in several ways: though analysis of historical operating data, understanding of individual expense types, and so forth. Changes in fixed and variable costs resulting from each potential course of action are explicitly identified to project the financial outcome of each alternative. The alternative having the greatest positive impact on profit is selected for implementation. By using the fixed- and variable-cost framework, the analysis is conceptually straightforward and substantially simplified. Production managers can therefore use incremental analysis as a tool for fast economically beneficial decisions on a real-time basis.

"The effects of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate and particle size on the dissolution rate of synthetically prepared calcium molybdate were investigated. Dissolution of calcium molybdate in oxalic acid solutions takes place as a series - parallel type reaction. In the first reaction step, which proceeds according to the ""Langmuir - Hinshelwood Mechanism"", calcium aqua oxalato molybdate is formed as a complex chelate intermediate product. In the second reaction step, molybdic acid is formed during the slow hydrolysis of calcium aqua oxalato molybdate, and it reacts rapidly with oxalic acid to form the polymeric hydrogen oxalate dimolybdate chelate as an end product. Activation energies were calculated as 41.4 and 49.9 kJ mol-1 for the first and zero order reactions. The fractional conversion versus time relationship can be given by the following equation.IntroductionMolybdenum is used widely in electric-electronic, metal working, aerospace and aeronautic, nuclear, glass and petrochemical industries because of its high melting temperature and resistance against chemical effects. However, the largest molybdenum consumers are the iron-steel and super alloy industries where molybdenum is used as an alloying element. Industrially important molybdenum minerals are limited to molybdenite (M0S2), powellite (CaMo04) and wulfenite (PbMo04), which are considered as primary molybdenum resources. Secondary molybdenum resources are spent catalysts and scrap [1-4].Molybdenum has been produced by pyrometallurgical processes in the past. Since it is possible to process low grade molybdenum ores and industrial wastes by hydrometallurgical processes, which are more environmentally friendly than pyrometallurgical processes, the importance of the use of hydrometallurgical processes has increased in the molybdenum production industry."

"As zinc consumption is gradually increasing all the time in the world, many zinc plants are looking for possible expansions. As the sulphuric acid market as well as the fertilizer market in many areas is saturated, the costs for the roasting-acid plant section of the zinc plant will create problems when making feasibility calculations for possible expansions. For solving the customers' situation, two proven zinc concentrate direct leaching technologies are available. A third one, which is possible, does not have any industrially proven applications in the zinc area.IntroductionTime to time, the zinc plants in the world scrutinize their operations with respect to their cost efficiency, the total zinc recovery and the near-by or far-away consumer markets, especially the for zinc and sulphuric acid. Their preliminary profitability calculations can show that a possible total expansion is not economical, when they are looking to expand the whole roasting/acid plant - leaching - solution purification - electrowinning - casting route, as the possible market price for the sulphuric acid is low or the sulphuric acid market is too far away. Based on these facts, their economical study often indicates that implementing a zinc concentrate direct leaching option could be more favourable. Regarding this situation, several aspects concerning three alternative direct leaching methods will be discussed, of which pressure leaching and the atmospheric leaching processes have several industrial applications in the zinc industry, as the ultrafine grinding - conventional leaching process at present has none. As iron is also dissolved during zinc concentrate direct leaching, iron removal processes generally used in the zinc industry are additionally discussed below."

"The removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from coking wastewater was experimentally investigated using a three-dimensional electrode reactor. The experimental results showed that the refractory organics in coking wastewater can be effectively removed by this process, and COD removal efficiency was affected by the operating parameters, such as electrolytic retention time, particle electrode dosage, initial pH, current density, aeration amount and electrical conductivity. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional electrode could have a COD removal efficiency of more than 60% and a running cost of no more than 6 YUAN (RMB)/t. This indicates the great potential of a three-dimensional electrode reactor in engineering applications as an advanced treatment methods for coking wastewater.IntroductionCoking wastewater is generated from coal coking, coal gas purification, and by-product recovery processes of coking; it is composed of phenolic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, cyanide, polycyclic nitrogen-containing aromatics, acyclic compounds, etc. Most of these constituents are refractory, poorly biodegradabile, toxic and carcinogenic [1-3]. Currently, coking wastewater is usually treated by different forms of A/O biological nitrogen removal processes as the primary treatment means, but the aforementioned processes are not efficient enough to meet the requirements of the National Discharge Standard in China (GB13456-1992). According to the continuous requirement on improving environmental protection for the coking industry (revised 2008), increasing wastewater utilization ratios and reducing the discharge of effluent in the coke industry have to be implemented for cleaner production and sustainable development. Therefore, advanced technologies need to be developed to treat coking wastewater and reutilize the product as industrial cooling water, which would be one of the best choices to achieve zero discharge of wastewater and reduce water consumption per ton of steel produced. In this study, a three-dimensional fluidized bed electrode reactor was adopted for the advanced treatment of coking wastewater, and the effects of operating conditions, including particle dosage, initial pH, current density, supporting electrolyte, as well as aeration amount on the COD removal rate, were investigated. Its running costs were also estimated."

"Dowa Metals & Mining Co. Ltd. has developed and plant-practiced a unique scorodite synthesis technology (DMSP®) for arsenic immobilization by oxidizing Fe(ll) ions in the presence of As(V) ions. Dowa has improved the DMSP® technology and has developed the process extensively for other applications. This paper focuses on the applicability of the DMSP® for various cases of copper smelting, and introduces other technologies for fixing arsenic and recycling gallium from GaAs, simultaneously processing (fixing) arsenic and thallium, and fixing and recovering arsenic from dilute arsenic solutions. The DMSP® was found to be applicable not only for various processes in nonferrous smelting, but also for other applications with a high potential for reducing environmental problems.IntroductionDowa Metals & Mining Co. Ltd. developed a method for synthesizing scorodite at ambient pressure [1], The scorodite is precipitated by oxidizing Fe(II) ion in a high-concentration As(V) solution. The scorodite produced in this way does not readily release arsenic because of its high crystallinity. Dowa built a demonstration plant for this technology at the Kosaka Smelter and established the production of scorodite at 30 t As/month by treating intermediate products from copper smelting as the starting material. The DMSP® was demonstrated to be favorably applicable to copper smelting [2]. We are engaged in further increasing the amount of arsenic fixation by the use of this process. Further improvements in productivity, cost reduction and applicability in various processes have been devised. Dowa has been endeavoring to resolve other problems as well as to improve productivity. We have gained extensive knowledge on arsenic treatment in our endeavors, enabling us to solve problems and improve productivity. This paper introduces the investigations and developments related to DMSP®."

"Stricter environmental regulations demand for safer treatment and disposal of incineratior fly ashes. So far no sound technology and processes are available for a sustainable and ecological treatment of the waste incineration ashes, and only partial treatment is practised for temporary and short-term solutions. New processes and technology need to be developed for comprehensive utilization and detoxification of the MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) incinerator residues. The objective of the current research is to better understand the behaviour of the environmental harmful elements during low or high temperature treatment, and to find an optimum route for an efficient processing of the incineration fly ash. In the present study, the fly ashes including boiler ash and ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) ash sampled from a MSW incinerator were washed with warm water, and the residues were dried and sintered or vitrified at high temperatures. The solutions from ash washing were analysed, and will be treated for salt extraction and purification. The ash residues before and after thermal treatment were also analysed. The results of vitrification and thermal behaviour were compared with those from the ashes without pre-washing. It was found that water pre-washing is an efficient way to remove certain water-dissolvable volatile salts such as chlorides, and thus the secondary emissions during vitrification could be reduced. INTRODUCTION The air pollution control residues from MSW incineration are classified as harzardous waste, including boiler ash, ESP ash and filter cake. The boiler ash is the firstly settled flue dust in the dust-collecting equipment under the boiler, the ESP ash is collected by an electrostatic precipitator in the second step, finally the flue-gas is further cleaned by the wet-scrubbers and residues are accumulated in the filter cake. Both the boiler ash and ESP ash are classified as hazardous materials, harmful to the environment due to the high concentrations of environmental hazardous elements. However, due to the different locations of the ash collection, the boiler ash has different compositions compared to the ESP ash, and is considered less toxic. Fly ash is generally toxic and with low bulk density, and has to be treated before final disposal. The current industrial practice is normally the landfilling after partial detoxification such as cement solidification."

"Classical thermodynamic analysis of any thermal and chemical process is usually based on the first law of thermodynamics. Such an approach is not sufficient when deeper understanding of the nature of each elementary process is required. The use of the first and second law of thermodynamics together is necessary to solve practical process more effectively. Enthalpy and exergy balances allow to enhance our understanding of thermal processes especially when cumulative consumption of energy and exergy is calculated. To ensure reliability of such an analysis the least squares method for adjustment of mass balances of principal chemical elements has been applied and described in detail. Numerical analysis has been carried out to compare two different processes of copper production – shaft furnace and flash smelting.IntroductionClassical thermodynamic analysis of any technological process is usually based on the First Law of Thermodynamics in the form of energy (enthalpy) balances. Such an approach is useful in engineering practice as it makes analysis easier in the global scale neglecting modeling of the elementary processes, allows calculation of the thermal efficiency and makes possible to control quality of the measurement results. Additionally, graphical presentation of the energy balance is simple in the form of Sankey diagram.In the case of aluminum electrolysis process, design of the new electrolyzer or its modernization is always based on the enthalpy balance.However, deeper thermodynamic analysis leads to the conclusion that such an approach is not sufficient. The First Law of Thermodynamics guarantees the exact equivalence of the various forms of energy (allowing all forms to be measured in the common unit such as joules) but it does not guarantee interconversibility. Thermal energy (heat) is in a peculiar and unique position, for whereas all other forms can be completely converted into thermal energy, the reverse process id impossible, only a portion of the heat can be converted into mechanical energy. Explanation comes from application of exergy balances. As we know exergy expresses the amount of mechanical work necessary to produce a material in its specified state from components common in the natural environment, in a reversible way, heat being exchanged only with environment [1]. Consumption of exergy connected with the fabrication of some considered product appears not only in the plant manufacturing the product, but also in all plants delivering raw materials for the final production process"

"Single phase rubidium jarosite was synthesized by precipitation from aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction and SEM-EDS analyses showed that the synthetic rubidium jarosite formed in subspherical particles with an average particle size of about 35 µm. The chemical analysis showed an approximate composition of Rbo9432Fe3(SO4)2 1245(OH)6. The decomposition behaviour of the jarosite in terms of solution pH was thermodynamically modeled using FACTSage by constructing the potential-pH diagram at 298.15 K. The E-pH diagram showed that the decomposition of jarosite leads to goethite (FeOOH) together with Rb+ and SO42- ions. The experimental decomposition of the Rb-jarosite was carried out in alkaline solutions with five different Ca(OH)2 concentrations. The decomposition process showed an ""induction period"" followed y a progressive conversion period where the Rb+ and SO42- ions formed in the aqueous solution. In contrast, calcium was incorporated in the solid residue and iron was transformed into amorphous ferrihydrite. The kinetic analysis showed that this process can be represented by the unreacted-core chemically controlled model. The reaction order with respect to Ca(OH)2 is 0.4342 and the calculated activation energy is 98.70 kJ mol-1. IntroductionJarosite type compounds are hydrous sulfate minerals containing alkalis and ferric ions, MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6, where M can be H3O+· Na+, K+, Rb+, Ag+, NH4 +, Tl+, ½ Pb2+ or ½ Hg2+. Jarosite-type compounds were formed by the natural ""in situ"" oxidation of pyritic ores leading to the replacement of the original iron sulfides and iron oxides (Dutrizac and Kaiman) [1]. The great interest in jarosites is due to its ability to eliminate or diminish the iron concentration of the acid leach solutions produced in the hydrometallurgical zinc process, with relatively low losses of divalent metals such as Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ or Co . However, the losses of the metal values demand a careful study of the conditions under which the jarosite compounds are formed together with their chemical properties."

"The material flow of urban eco-industrial system includes linear flow, recycling flow, branching flow, converging flow, etc., which consequently lead to the system complexity. Comparing the urban eco-industrial system to ecosystem, it can be concluded that this complexity is caused by the system adaptability. In the system, the interaction and adaptability between the agents themselves and between the agents and the environment stimulates the changes of material-flow mode, which lead to the evolvement from traditional industry to the eco-industry. Focusing on the evaluation of this evolvement process, two material-flow models are established in this paper, one of which is for the system itself and the other for the agents in system. The latter model is applied to analyze the interrelationships among mass, energy and pollutant flow in the iron and steel industry, and to make the direction clear to improve the resource and energy efficiency and decrease the environmental load.1 IntroductionIndustrial system is a subsystem of urban system, and they are interconnected and interrelated through material flow. The industrial development causes the urbanization. But the traditional industrial mode, characterized by high consumption, high pollution and low efficiency, also causes the “urban problems”, and leads to the reduction of resources carrying capacity and the increase of environmental load. Nowadays a lot of researches focus on how to realize the sustainable development of industries and cities. Thus comes the urban eco-industrial system guided by industrial ecology.Regarded as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS), the urban eco-industrial system evolves for quite a long time. According to Holland’s description on CAS, CAS consists of adaptive agents, which interact with the environment and other agents, learn and accumulate experiences, and accordingly change their own structures and motion modes. In this way, the evolution of the whole macro system is improved [1]. The evolution from traditional industrial system to urban eco-industrial system is mainly reflected in the variety of internal material flows which include not only linear flows but also recycling flows. Therefore, to construct models which clearly analyze industrial metabolism, is of great importance to evaluate industrial system evolution.The article is organized as follows: Section 2 describes the urban eco-industrial system. Section 3 presents the system-oriented metabolic analysis model and the agent-oriented one, analyze the interrelations of energy flow, material flow and pollutant flow in Chinese iron and steel industry through the latter model, and indicates the directions of improving the resource efficiency and energy efficiency, and decreasing the environmental load. Recycling technology of spent Mn-Zn system batteries has been worked out and tested in laboratory scale. The proposed technological scheme includes the following basic operations: breakage of batteries, hydro-vibrated treatment of broken up mass, electrolysis by using alkali electrolyte. This method enables extracting of 200-220 kg zinc in powder form, of 300-350 kg manganese concentrate and of 130 kg steel in the form of scrap per tone of broken up batteries.

This paper initially gives a brief overview of Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited (Zincor). The original design parameters of the Zincor roasters are compared to the current operation, and the requirements for efficient roasting are listed. Roaster operational problems experienced during the early to mid 1990's are outlined. A description of the investigation and the outcome to increase overall roaster availability are given. The history and the development of the use of oxygen at the Zincor roaster operation, with an account of the associated operational experiences, are explained.

For the purification of quarry waters from copper and their further utilization a three-sectional electrochemical reactor is constructed providing the extraction of 90-95% copper as a self-loosing powder from the quarry water running as a steady flow. Four variations of the integrated processing of quarry water are developed and their relative technical and economical parameters are calculated.
