"As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold's autoclaves/CIL facility at Goldstrike, Nevada, blanking the gold cyanide adsorbing native carbon in the ore with hard (m.p. >55°C) paraffin wax was proposed. To avoid interference from other ore constituents in the exploratory testwork, commercial activated carbon was substituted for native carbon in the ore to establish the best conditions for de-activation of carbon with molten wax.IntroductionDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including the Goldstrike deposit, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (POX). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers more correctly to gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the autoclave oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This behaviour is used advantageously on a large scale by gold millers, who use man made activated carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold after autoclave oxidation."

"Lead alloys electro-winning from chloride melts was under investigation. Impurities concentration in cathode lead is strongly depended on temperature, electrolyte composition, anode current density. The equilibrium electrode potentials of lead-antimony alloys with the various content of electropositive metal in the alloy were investigated in the wide temperature interval. Thermodynamic properties of Pb-Sb alloys containing 20-95 mol% of Pb were studied by EMF method in temperature interval 723-873K in molten mixture of potassium and lead chlorides. Partial and integral thermodynamic characteristics were calculated. Small negative deviations from Raul’s law were found. Anode processes were investigated. The lead dissolution was found to be the only process in certain interval of current densities and electropositive metal content in alloy.IntroductionAt present human race is facing the problem of pollution by lead and its compounds and also the pollution influence on population health all over the world. One of the solution ways is the recycling lead containing technical wastes by ecologically clean technologies.World scientific community pays much attention to the electrolysis of molten salts. The usage of salt mixtures, as electrolytes, discovers new possibilities in the production of metals, metal compounds and alloys. ?????????? of the electrolysis at the temperature 50 - 200 °? above the melting temperature of chosen salt mixture allow to unbreaks processes, that undergo in the pre-electrode layer. The rate of the electrodepositing of elements are much higher than in the water electrolytes. At present there are technologies developed for production of metals (Ta, Nb, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ca, Al, Mg, Be, Li and others) by the electrolysis of the melts. Electrolysis of melts might be used in order to convert different technological formations containing lead and other nonferrous metals, that produced by different enterprises. According to the level of the influence on the living organisms lead is in the group of highly dangerous substances alongside with arsenic, cadmium, mercury, selenium, zinc, etc. Toxity and ability to accumulate in the human organism are two main sources of danger for the human being."

"Tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS), a precursor of silica nanoparticles, is prepared from the waste silicon sludge, followed by the synthesis of silica nanoparticles from the TMOS by flame spray pyrolysis. A two-dimensional multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for the flame spray pyrolysis process (FSP) for the synthesis of silica nanoparticles has been developed. The model incorporates the governing turbulent equations of overall continuity, momentum, energy and species mass transport to represent the gas phase and the population balance model (PBM) to account for the silica nanoparticles. The model has been validated with experimental data in terms of gas temperature and average particle size. Introduction Silica (SiO2) nanoparticles are used in various industrial applications, such as catalyst, pigments, thin film substrates, electronic and thermal insulators, and humidity sensors [1]. They are also used as additives in plastics and rubbers to improve the mechanical properties of elastomers, and in liquid systems to improve their suspension behavior. These applications rely on the particle morphology, average particle size, particle size distribution, and phase composition [2]. Silica nanoparticles can be synthesized by wet chemical processes such as sol-gel methods and high-temperature processes such as flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). The FSP process provides a unique control of particle size and crystalline structure and it can also produce high-purity, thermally stable particles continuously with minimal further treatments. The sizes of the flame- made particles range from a few to several hundred nanometers, depending on the operating conditions [1]. The synthesis of silica nanoparticles from organic compounds that contain silicon by the FSP process is of interest because it generates no harmful by-products [1, 3]. Several compounds such as tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) can be used to synthesize silica nanoparticles, but most such compounds are expensive. Thus, it is desirable to prepare the precursor compounds from waste materials. In the present study, TEOS and TMOS synthesized from silicon sludge were used as precursors of silica nanoparticles [4]."

"In Italian building market one of the reasons that often stop building contractors from not taking into consideration the possibility to recycle rubble from building is represented by the increase of costs for rubble separation. However the recycling of C&DW can also allow a decrease in disposal costs and a reduction in raw materials requirement.In this paper the results of a testing conducted on a case study through economic and technical analyses are presented.Results highlight that a wise management of demolition and disposal processes can generate a remarkable saving and that it is possible, on the other side, to achieve environmental benefits such as reduction of raw material consumption and dump life lengthening.IntroductionTwo major factors have been found to have considerably influenced the market of recycled aggregates in Europe and Italy: the EU and national regulations and environmental awareness. The market of recycled aggregate has grown in countries with limited natural resources.Waste disposal has also been one of the top EU political and environmental priorities. In the complex interaction between human activities and the environment, waste is proved to be one of the most environment-degrading products.In 1972 the European Commission introduced measures on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. In 2006, directive 2006/12/EC (European Commission) on waste was issued. It covers the scope of minimizing the waste, prevent hazardous waste, maximize reclamation, reuse, recycling and energy-recovery.No specific directive refers to management and recycling of construction and demolition wastes. However, in 1992 the European Commission listed debris among waste management priorities because of its growing amount.Only recently, effective environmental policies have been implemented in Italy, even though relevant environmental issues started rising as early as the beginning of the 1970s. In the 1980s the Government undertook the first significant measures to handle the waste management."

"Proper training and education in the field of recycling and waste treatment are inconceivable without the proper teaching of the terminology specific to both recycling (aerospace products recycling, automotive recycling, general recycling, recycling behaviour, recycling schemes, recycling systems, and waste recycling) and waste (characterization of waste, electronic waste, heavy-metal containing waste, monitoring of waste, radioactive waste, solid waste, waste collection, waste conversion, waste recycling, waste reutilization, waste stabilization, waste storage, and waste treatment) in both the students’ mother tongue and in English for Special Purposes (ESP) as a second language (with focus on the structuring of the specific terminology). Including linguistic approaches among the possible approaches of environmental protection and material sustainability means including linguistics among the various disciplines addressing energy supply, cement and building materials, metallurgy, chemistry, glassware, pulp and paper industry, machinery, automobile and electronic industries, collection, and sorting, further treatment and final disposal of post-consumer material.IntroductionCultural and technical changes have produced more novel artefacts than novel activities or novel properties, generating new vocabulary needs that are readily answered by new words (nouns).The purpose of this research is to show that ‘waste words’ – phrasal words (items that have the internal structure of phrases but function syntactically as words, e.g., cattle waste) and particularly compound nouns (words formed by combining roots, that tend to have a meaning that is more or less idiosyncratic or unpredictable, e.g., wastepaper ‘discarded paper’) – used in the study of the English of recycling, waste treatment, and clean technologies can be misleading for both native and non-native students and/or users of English because their structure alone does not allow instant, proper understanding of their meaning.Our hypothesis is that this inconvenient can be overcome by getting to reach the proper meaning of these new words. Or, arriving at the precise meanings of the ‘waste words’ depends on our knowledge of the world (for example, wastepaper indicates that some used paper is discarded and not wasted) rather than on purely linguistic knowledge."

The purpose of this paper is to offer some basic knowledge of these factors and how they can impact the performance of a filter, the life of the media and the overall cost of operation through case studies of actual plant filtration applications.IntroductionThe use of woven filter cloth in liquid/solid separation applications is generally well known. Woven filter cloth, by the nature of the weaving process, offers unique consistency and repeatability when compared to some other filter media such as needled felts, papers, sintered structures and knitted cloth. This unique consistency and repeatability is particularly applicable to woven filter cloth produced using monofilament fibers. These fibers are consistent in shape and form the basis for a woven cloth with predictable pore size and throughput characteristics. Woven filter cloth can be used in most wet filtration applications. Typical examples are the separation of chemical and pharmaceutical solids from process liquors, waste stream solids capture, liquid foods clarification, mining separations, and polymer filtration.EnvironmentOne of the first considerations is the environmental demand of the given process. Though it is tempting to look immediately at the particles in a filtration process, it is often better to consider some of the more basic needs of the system. There are numerous materials available, both synthetic and wire cloth. Each has its own unique set of properties."

"Navarro is the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it collects about 1.600 tons of waste daily. The environment surrounding Navarro is highly contaminated and the pollutants released by the dump threaten human health in the adjoining neighborhoods. The goal of our project is to identify major pollutants released from the dump and their distribution in the surrounding ecosystem. In a first phase of the sampling and analysis program landfill leachate was collected and screened for heavy metals and for the most common persistent organic pollutants. This allowed us to identify the most relevant compounds on which we focused in a more detailed second phase investigation. These compounds were quantified in the vicinity of the landfill (groundwater, surface water, drinking water and soil) to get information on their mobility and possible pathways into the human body.IntroductionThe usual technique of waste disposal in most developing countries is by landfilling on not -, or not well controlled sites, where people live close by or even on the waste itself. A typical example for this practice is Navarro, the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it now consists of about 23 million tons of household and industrial waste. The dump is located on a wetland in the riverbed of the Cauca River, the main drinking water source for Cali. Two ponds of unknown permeability located next to the landfill collect a fraction of the waste leachate. During the rainy season, the ponds frequently overflow and drain into the soil (alluvial, loamy sediments) of surrounding sugar cane fields. The environment of Navarro is assumed to be highly polluted and there is evidence that it affects the health of nearby inhabitants. Specifically, the incidence of respiratory diseases was higher among vulnerable individuals (<3 and >50 years old) living in a <3 km perimeter of Navarro as compared with a control group (Solano et al., 2006). Further, a clustering of extremely rare congenital malformations (sirenomelias and cyclops) was observed in a small area during a short time period (<6 months) (Filigrana et al., 2008)."

"The production of solar cells is increasing dramatically and the shortage of polycrystalline silicon for these cells has become a serious problem, making development of a low-cost production process for solar grade silicon essential. An electron beam melting technique is known to be effective for the removal of phosphorus from molten silicon. Although the phosphorus is removed by preferential evaporation in this process, the rate of removal is not sufficient, and its improvement requires thermodynamic information on phosphorus in the molten silicon. In this research, the vapor pressure of phosphorus in equilibrium with a siliconphosphorus alloy was measured by double Knudsen cell mass spectrometry with a system blowing gas into the Knudsen cell. The activity of phosphorus in silicon, the Gibbs energy change of the dissolution of phosphorus in silicon, and other factors were estimated from the results. Using these data, we provided guidelines on how this process can be improved.IntroductionSolar energy is in great demand since it is inexhaustible and cleaner than that from conventional energy resources. Silicon is the material most widely used to convert solar energy into electricity. Figure 1 shows the recent production of solar cells. High purity silicon for solar cells, namely solar grade silicon (SOG-Si), has been commercially supplied mainly from off-grade high purity silicon in the semiconductor industry. However, production of solar cells has increased rapidly in recent years, and the shortage of SOG-Si has become a serious problem, so that a new processes which can produce SOG-Si economically are required.Directional solidification was applied to remove transition metal elements such as Fe or Ti by segregating them from the remaining melt. However, such solidification is useless for phosphorus because the segregation coefficient of phosphorus is nearly unity. Numerous approaches have been made in an attempt to produce a resource of low cost SOG-Si from metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si). [1,2]"

The fluid flow in the mold during up-hill teeming is of great importance for the quality of the cast ingot and therefore the quality of the final steel products. At the early stage of the filling of an up-hill teeming mold, steel enters, with high velocity, through the nozzle into the mold and the turbulence on the meniscus could lead to entrainment of mold flux. The entrained mold flux might subsequently end up as defects in the final product. It is therefore very important to get a mild and stable inlet flow in the entrance region of the mold. It has been acknowledged recently that swirling motion induced using a twist tape swirl blade, in the submerged entry nozzle is remarkably effective to control the fluid flow pattern in both the slab and billet type continuous casting molds, resulting in increased productivity and quality of the produced steel. From the above result, we propose, swirling flow generated through a swirl blade inserted into the entry nozzle, as a new method of reducing the deformation of the rising surface and the unevenness of the flow during filling of the up-hill teeming mold. The swirling blade has two features: (1) to generate a swirling flow in the entrance nozzle and (2) to suppress the uneven flow, generated/developed after flowing through the elbow. The effect of the use of a twist tape swirl blade was studied using both numerical calculations and physical modeling. Water modeling was used to assert the effect of the swirling blade on rectifying of tangential and axial velocities in the filling tube for the up-hill teeming and also to verify the results from the numerical calculations.

"In recent years, zinc recovery from flue dusts and other industrial wastes has been increased, offering to the market a large tonnage of secondary zinc oxides, which can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content.The ZINCEXTM Technology has been commercially applied for more than thirty years and represents the most suitable solution to deal with secondary or crude zinc oxides due to its flexibility, simplicity, and cost-efficiency, allowing production of SHG electrolytic zinc and pure zinc sulfate salts thanks to the flexibility and selectivity of the zinc solvent extraction unit regarding to get rid of impurities.A dual plant able to produce electrolytic zinc and crystallized zinc sulfate has been engineered to provide a flexible and profitable solution to zinc market. A description of the study and the relevant achievements is presented in this paper.IntroductionZinc is a valuable commodity in the marketplace and can be recycled again and again and still maintain its physical and chemical properties. Zinc recycling offers both environmental and economic benefits such as reducing volumes of material that end up in landfills, saving energy by reducing the need for mining and smelting, and relieving environmental impact on the land and water, and conserving zinc ore [1].The supply of zinc able to be re-processed will be increasing from year to year according to secondary materials enter the recycling stream, and as a result, more recycled zinc will become available in the market. Thus, some existing zinc refineries are implementing an annexed treatment line to process secondary oxides in conjunction with primary zinc concentrates [2].The galvanized steel scrap is normally recycled in electric arc furnaces or in basic oxygen furnaces, which generates a large tonnage of zinc-bearing flue dusts (EAFD). Around one million ton EAFD is yearly produced at the USA and the EU, respectively. The flue dusts are treated commercially by pyrometallurgical ways such as waelz kilns, electrothermic furnaces, etc, to yield secondary zinc oxides that can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content [3]."

"The paper presents the results of a laboratory study, conducted at the Experimental Road Laboratory of the University of Padova, in order to verify the possibility to use different types of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slags – in substitution of the natural aggregates – in the composition of both dense graded and porous asphalt mixes for flexible road pavements. The research has been articulated in a preliminary study of the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the EAF steel slags, and in the following mix design and performance characterization of the bituminous concretes, through stiffness modulus tests at various temperatures and permanent deformation (creep) tests. All the mixtures with EAF slags have satisfied the requisites for acceptance standardized for the road sector, thus resulting as suitable for use in the construction of infrastructures, moreover presenting higher mechanical characteristics than those of the corresponding asphalts with full natural aggregate. IntroductionSteel is produced industrially employing two main technologies: the integral cycle, which starts from mineral iron, and the electric cycle, which uses scrap metal. A consistent amount of the steel produced in Italy (approx. 55%) comes from Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), which every year, alongside the steel, produce approximately 2 million tons of slag. The recycling of this waste product to produce new high-quality raw materials would reduce both the exploitation of limited natural resources and the amounts of refuse. In the European Union, 60% of slag from EAF is still today disposed of in dumps. The extremely diverse origins of scrap metal (waste from mechanical manufacturing, industrial and civil demolition, car bodywork, etc.) means that the by-products generated by the smelting, slags and ashes, contain different elements, in varying composition, also depending on the type of steel to be produced and the consequent adding of binding and melting elements during the production process. For this reason, iron and steel industry electric furnace slag - unlike the blast furnace dross utilised in cement works, which has a more uniform composition as it comes from a more standardised cycle – has been viewed in the past with some diffidence and so, at least in Italy, the possibilities of its re-use have never been fully developed."

"The steelmaking industry which uses electric arc furnaces (EAF) generates approximately 250.000 tons of EAF flue dusts annually in Turkey. These flue dusts contain valuable metals such as zinc, iron and lead. For example, if these flue dusts can be treated efficiently, disposal problems certainly decreases and annually almost 40.000-75.000 tons of zinc can be recovered. In this study, powder and pellet forms of EAF flue dusts taken from a steel mill were carbothermally treated in a temperature controlled pilot scale rotary furnace via carbothermal reduction in order to investigate the reduction behavior of Zn and Pb. Temperature (900-1000 and 1100 °C) and time (0-90 minutes) were selected as reaction parameters. The chemical analysis was performed for the sample residues.IntroductionTurkey’s steel production reached to 23.3 million tons in 2006. There are three integrated steel plants of which capacities vary from 0.7 to 3 million tons per year and seventeen EAF steel plants of which capacities vary from 0.06 to 2 million tons per year [1]. When it is considered that more than 74 % of the Turkish steel production is produced by EAF method and approximately 10 - 15 kg of dust is formed per ton of steel during this process, the amount of annual generated EAF dust may be estimated at approximately 0.25 million tons. EAF dust which contains valuable metals such as zinc, lead, iron, cadmium, and chromium, is considered as hazardous waste product in steelmaking industry. If these flue dusts can be treated efficiently, not only the disposal problems certainly decrease, but also annually almost 40.000-75.000 tons of zinc can be recovered. Many studies which exist on recovering of the valuable metals from EAF dust, propose and practice many hydro-metallurgical and pyro-metallurgical treatments [2- 7]. In this study a laboratory scale work were performed to investigate reduction behavior of zinc and lead in EAF dust by carbothermal process in a rotary furnace."

"Among the methods proposed for spent activated carbon regeneration, the most acceptable is, thermal reactivation, because in this case the existing equipment for manufacture of activated carbon can be adapted for this purpose.In order to conduct the process of thermal re-activation of spent activated carbon directly at gold mills, a fullscale drum-type furnace with external electric heating has been developed, i.e. EPV-300 model with a throughput rate of 50 to 120 kg/hour. Its use ensures restoration of the adsorption properties of carbon up to the level of fresh activated carbon with an insignificant (by 0.7%) decrease in strength and with a high (95% to 97%) yield of reactivated carbon.During the recent years, activated powder carbon has been extensively used in flotation processes for treating polymetallic ores at ore treating plants to improve recoveries of main metals (copper, lead, nickel, etc.).Especially large volumes of activated powder carbon are used at the Talnakh concentrator of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex in Russia for absorption of residual flotation reagents from recycled water in order to ensure efficient selective separation of minerals with similar physical and chemical properties.IntroductionSorption technology based on active carbons use starts being applied in such an important in the widest sense of the word strategical branch of economics as non-ferrous metallurgy. Thus since the middle ninetieth Russian gold extraction industry began to apply widely the processes of sorption from pulps and solutions by means of high-resistant granulated active carbons. That provided the start of gold ore minefield exploration, increasing of gold extraction from the ore and reducing its loss with the ""tails"" of process. At present more than 40% of Russian gold is extracted with the help of sorption technologies [1].Another field of active carbons application in non-ferrous metallurgy is the processes of non-ferrous ores floatation at ore-mining and processing enterprise. For that purpose powdered (less than l00µm) active carbons are used for providing the effective selection of minerals with similar physicochemical properties. This method not only increases the metal extraction level but provides deeper division of them."

"Acid separation using short bed ion exchange is a now well established technology in copper refinery tankhouses. Refinery bleed streams from liberator cells are treated by short bed systems to produce an acid-free byproduct stream that contains the bleed metals and valuable nickel salts. Removing the acid eliminates the need for a black acid evaporator and reduces the amount of sodium carbonate required in nickel selective precipitation processes. The recovered sulfuric acid can be recycled to the tankhouse. This same technology is routinely used to treat other acids such as hydrochloric, nitric, and hydrofluoric. In the case of hydrochloric acid, the process can selectively separate chloro-anionic complexes such as Zn, Pb, and Cu, which are then eluted with water. The acid recovery technology can also be closely coupled with ion exchange processes in order to minimize regenerant acid consumption. In many hydrometallurgical applications resin regeneration often requires an acid dosage multiple times the stoichiometric minimum. Coupling an acid recovery bed with the IX column allows recovery and recycle of the free acid in the spent regenerant, thus reducing the overall acid consumption to just slightly more than stoichiometric.Short Bed Ion ExchangeThe short bed ion exchange process has been extensively used in the metal finishing industries since the early 1970s [1,2]. Short bed systems have also been sold to primary metals producers for the separation of sulfuric acid from copper refinery bleed streams [3] and for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from plant effluent streams. This unique technology optimizes the ion exchange process and offers a number of significant advantages over conventional ion exchange. The principal features and benefits of this technology are presented below."

"In view of the increasing importance of processing lean ores as potential future resources, efforts are being made worldwide to develop suitable technologies for the recovery of both nonferrous, base and precious metals. There are various types of low grade ores present in many countries. Gradually, the mineral reserves for production of metals have undergone complex changes with regards to their grades and particularly the physical and chemical properties of the minerals to be separated from each other. So, there is a need for new processing routes or the upgrading of existing technologies to recover metal values that are otherwise unutilized. Accordingly, an overview of the different types of mineral resources and economical processes, based on ore horizons, consumption of energy and reagents and environmental concerns, is made in this paper. In addition, the paper provides a summary of metallurgical and engineering challenges to be overcome when implementing new technologies and concepts with regard to base metal extraction and sulphur removal efficiency.IntroductionLow grade multimetal complex sulfide ores are likely to become an importance source for nonferrous as well as precious metals in the near future. The principle metallic minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, tetrahedrite, boulangerite and cassiterite. Such ores are located throughout the world as multi-pocketed reserves which have present complex challenges with regard to their grades and particularly the physical and chemical properties of the minerals to be separated from each other. Their compositions can vary widely from one deposit to another and even from one location to another in the same deposit, and this poses a problem for the recovering metals present therein. Successful aqueous processing of complex sulphide ores depends on the composition and mineralogy of the raw materials and on their leaching behaviour."

"Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) studies of tetravalent platinum from acidic chloride solutions have been carried out with Alamine 336 as an extractant diluted in kerosene. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Plot of log D vs. log [Acid], mol.L-1 gave a straight line with a negative slope of 0.8±0.03 indicating the exchange of one mole of hydrogen ions for every mole of platinum(IV) extracted into the organic phase. Extraction of platinum(IV) increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slope 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. The plot between metal distributions to aqueous to organic phases is 1.3±0.01; it indicates monomeric species was formed in organic phase. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and bases like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide are studied. The results indicated that hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are the better stripping agents when compared with other acids and bases. Increase of temperature decreases the percentage extraction of metal indicating the process is endothermic. Regeneration and recycling capacity of Alamine 336 and extraction behavior of associated elements such as aluminium(III), magnesium(II), cobalt(II), iron(III) and nickel(II) were studied.IntroductionThe demand for platinum group metals (PGM’s) has risen in the last five years expected to keep in rising. Right now, the demand is already beyond the supply. The primary use of PGM’s today is in the automotive industry. Catalytic converters used in the PGM’s process to reduce greenhouse gases. Because of the current demand to reduce the green house effect the expected need for platinum is here stay. Country’s now advancing in the use of car production also are phasing increasing the needs for this metal. Chemical processing also use it, too. These industries account for more than 50% of all platinum production. Jewelry is other primary use of this precious metal whose value is much greater than gold. Other uses include computer data storage, scientific developments, fuel cell technology and in the glass manufacturing processes."

"The treatment technologies for municipal solid waste (MSW) are effective mainly for components sized over 40 – 50 mm. This fraction is separated by screening in the beginning of the process. Usually the undersized product is deposited without additional treatment. Its quantity is variable from several up to 30 – 40 % of the total MSW. Both oversized and undersized fractions are formed by all types of primary matter. Adapted technologies from mineral processing will provide a suitable technology for treatment of MSW under 40 – 50 mm. The MSW content depends on the geographical location, the degree of urbanization and other factors. The methods can be applied for separations of different components suitable for recycling or other utilization are: • Separation by density; • Separation in thin liquid layer; • Selective grinding and screening; • Flotation, etc. Introduction Municipal solid waste (MSW) represents an integral part of public urbanization. However, there are some drawbacks stemming from MSW, in regard to its collection, transport and elimination. Different approaches exits worldwide for tackling the problems arising from MSW. For a short period of time, the attitude towards MSW has evolved in several levels, each further level being characterized by higher percentage of utilization of MSW components. Thus, the bottom line has been shifted from safety storage towards processing that includes recycling and maximal utilization of MSW components. Technologic processes applied for treatment of MSW have a common feature – that the fine components, having sizes under 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, or 50 mm are excluded from treatment process trough screening, and in most cases diverted without any additional treatment to preliminary prepared storage sites. MSW in Sofia – current situation The amount of MSW collected daily in Sofia as around 1000 t/24 h. It is stored or baled. Baling is a spare alternative of storage, since baling insures only temporal keeping of MSW, till the building of suitable storage site where the bales will be transported and buried. The morphologic composition of MSW in Sofia has been determined several times at different time intervals, from some Bulgarian organizations as well as from the Japanese organization JICA. So far, however, there is still a lack of enough systematical and comprehensive study. Generalized results from the studies on the MSW components, as well as some important parameters are given in Table 1."

"This study assesses the Novosol® process, an emerging technology developed by Solvay to treat heavy metals from dredged sediments using phosphoric acid. The main goal is to convert toxic metal ions, such as Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ to insoluble metallic phosphates. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated by performing the chemical reaction in a tubular reactor, followed by convective drying and maturation of the treated sediment at ambient temperature and finally thermal destruction of the organic matter by calcinations (500°C-700°C). Selected variables (acid concentration, volume fraction of solids, flow rate, drying and calcination temperature and time) were investigated. Laboratory scale experiments were carried out with various combinations of these parameters. The influence of the quantity of acid and the temperature of calcinations on physical properties of the sediment and stabilization of the heavy metals are discussed. Introduction The French territory counts 525 000 km of rivers which transport each year on average 6 million m3 of sediments. Their deposit causes the silting of channels, rivers and lakes. This completely natural phenomenon is exacerbated by the introduction of industrial and urban wastes into the erosion and sedimentation process. This silting leads to clogging of rivers, with a reduction in their flow rates. Consecutively, other problems appear, such as flooding risks, decrease of biological purification capacity and associated loss of the biodiversity. The presence of toxic compounds (from industrial, household or agricultural origins) in the sediments worsens the situation, and requires curing to restore the natural environment and its function. The dredged sediments are either spread on agricultural land, land tipped, confined or sent for chemical or physical treatment [12]. The first research programmes on toxic sediments appeared at the end of the Eighties in the United States, in Canada, in the Netherlands and in Germany. Several techniques of treatment were developed for the sediments; these techniques can be used alone or in combination. These techniques include extraction and concentration of the pollutants: the pollutants are isolated from the sedimentary matrix and the sediment is decontaminated. In some cases of organic contaminations, the pollutants are destroyed by chemical oxidation or biodegradation and in other cases, the contaminated material is either stabilized (mixed with hydraulic binders), or destroyed (incineration) [14,15]. Phytoremediation by afforestation has also been reported [19]."

"Lead-zinc mineralization is distributed in Egypt along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas. A representative sample from Um Gheig was collected and ground to -60 mesh for the mineralogical study. It contains hemimorphite (Zn2SiO4.H2O), sphalerite (ZnS), galena (PbS), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) beside the gangue minerals gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and hematite (Fe2O3). Cadmium seems to be incorporated in the crystal structure of the zinc-lead minerals. The chemical analysis of Um-Gheig representative sample revealed that, it contains 16% zinc combined with 0.1% cadmium, 2.3% lead and 0.1% boron beside other elements.Pug and agitation leaching were performed on samples ground to -200 mesh to achieve the maximum dissolution efficiency of cadmium with respect to other elements. Cadmium leaching efficiency reached 90% by using 40% H2SO4 at S/L ratio 1/2 and stirring time 2 hours at 80o C. Cadmium was then separated as yellow precipitate of CdS from the sulfate leach liquor containing 0.9 g/l Cd, 145 g/l Zn, 0.15 g/l B and 0.01 g/l Pb. Separation of cadmium was carried out by direct precipitation using Na2S as well as H2S. The recovery of 94% cadmium free of zinc was achieved.IntroductionLead-zinc ores occur in Egypt in a few localities distributed along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas. Um-Gheig Pb-Zn ore is a replacement deposit in limestone and calcareous sandstone in the basal series of the Middle Miocene rocks. The reserve of the ore deposits has been estimated by Soviet and German Experts to be about 900,000 Ton, Bishai [1]. As has been mentioned, zinc is a common element and cadmium is comparatively rare in almost zinc minerals. It was estimated that zinc is 200 times as abundant as cadmium. According to Bodas [2] about 2.1% of cadmium was carried by the Zn mineral hemimorphite (15.3% Zn) in Thailand. Also, Onal et al., [3] found that 164 g/t Cd was carried by Pb–Zn ore sample containing 10.17% Pb and 10.98% Zn from Aladag in Turkey. Cadmium metal has gained great importance due to its wide applications in civil and navy purposes as well as in nuclear field. It is characterized by its ability to absorb thermal neutrons during the chain reaction inside the nuclear reactors. It is also used in the manufacture of sheets which directed the chain reactions [4]."

"Industrial sustainability looks to improve material and energy efficiencies, product quality and variety, and productivity within an industrial zone, thus pursuing the long-term sustainable development of the region. This paper introduces a systems-based modeling methodology, which provides industrial leaders with the ability to evaluate future production options to determine the path with the highest positive impact on both their own sustainability and the sustainability of the overall industrial zone. A comprehensive study on sustainable development of an auto-manufacturing focused industrial zone under uncertainty is illustrated. Introduction Sustainable development refers to a continuous process of improvements that must be followed in order to achieve a state of sustainability. In its most general form, a widely accepted definition of sustainable development was identified in the Brundtland Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [1]. Sustainability will occur when the material and social conditions can be maintained or improved for human health and the environment over time without exceeding the ecological capabilities that support them [2]. An industrial zone is defined as a geographic area comprised of a network of industrial sectors, each composed of a number of entities. Such a zone is highly integrated and complex, and contains numerous uncertainties due to each industry’s extreme dependencies on its suppliers and customers throughout the product supply chain. In the context of an industrial zone, sustainable development refers to the continuous process of advancements in the zone, and the entities that comprise it, creating more value, wealth, and profits (economically viable dimension), providing environmentally benign products with less raw material consumption and waste generation (environmentally compatible dimension), and collaboration and a direct relationship among all involved in the supply chain, i.e. the corporations, employees, suppliers, investors, communities, customers, etc. (socially responsible dimension). These are the triple bottom lines of industrial sustainability. In order for economic, environmental, and social sustainability improvements to be successfully implemented within an industrial zone, the industrial decision makers must possess system-wide analysis abilities. The analysis of the sustainable development of an industrial zone involves decisions at the local, regional, or national levels, which are complex and involves handling of ill-defined parameters with a high degree of uncertainty due to the imperfect understanding of the underlying issues [3]. This work focuses strictly on the uncertainties in future zone planning and a method and a scenario based approach that can be used to evaluate the sustainable development of an industrial zone among these uncertainties."
