El presente trabajo evalúa la adición del oxígeno puro al circuito de cianuración, con la finalidad de incrementar el porcentaje de recuperación de oro y plata, así como su efecto sobre el consumo de cianuro de sodio. En ese sentido, la mayoría de las plantas mantienen un alto nivel de concentración de cianuro, en lugar de un alto nivel de oxígeno disuelto en la solución. Como consecuencia de ello , operan a niveles de cianuro de modo que la disolución del oro depende del nivel de oxigeno disuelto. Por ello, es más fácil mantener un nivel alto de cianuro, que un nivel alto de oxígeno disuelto en la solución, principalmente si se utiliza aire en lugar de oxígeno.

"Coal—mine explosions are accidents that can and should be prevented. In former years hundreds of lives were lost each year in the United States as a result of such explosions, but after 1932 the numerous precautionary measures adopted had reduced their frequency and severity 75 percent or more until in 1940 several very disastrous explosions marred the good record. Unfortunately, both the number and severity of explosions seem to be tending to increase compared with the relatively good achievement from 1933 to 1940. The requisites for an explosion are ever present in all soft-coal and many hard-coal mines. A certain combination of circumstances, such as a flame or an arc in a cloud of dust or in a body of gas or both may start an explosion at any time. The fact that the frequency and severity of explosions were lowered for 6 or 7 years is no guarantee that such freedom from explosions will continue, as the bad record of 1940 has shown, and underground workers should feel honor bound to exercise the utmost care so that they will not help to bring about the circumstances that will cause an explosion.Although mine operators bear the main responsibility for preventing explosions, miners can do many things to help. As about 9 out of 10 explosions begin at a working face, it is largely within the power of workers to prevent them. All miners should do their part willingly and should not defend a fellow workman from punishment, even from discharge, for disobeying necessary rules, whose disregard may cause the death not only of the safety-rule breaker but also of many of his coworkers.When a miner is careless and is injured some other way than by an explosion he may be the only one to suffer, but if his carelessness causes an explosion he not only endangers his own life but also that of every other man in the mine and possibly the lives of persons outside the mine.Experiments have shown that ignition of as small a quantity as 150 cubic feet of an explosive mixture of methane and air under certain circumstances can start an explosion that will traverse an entire mine. Thus, ignition of an explosive mixture of gas 1 foot down from the roof and 13 feet back from the face of a 12-foot entry might cause a widespread explosion if the right quantity and kind of dust were present. Many persons have ignited much larger quantities of gas without being killed, but they survived only because dust, confinement, and other conditions were not exactly ""right."""

Rock burst is one of the most serious mining hazards, adversely affecting the safety, economy and productivity of mines. It is a sudden manifestation of the release of strain energy stored in the rock mass. At present, there is no universally accepted method for predicting the timing of the rock burst. However, if the seismically hazardous regions in mines can be identified before they are exposed to mining then precautionary measures can be planned before the work begins. A study was conducted in Sudbury Nickel Belt and an approach has been proposed to identify rock burst prone workings on the basis of (a) Rock properties and bursting indices (b) In-situ approaches (c) Geological features (d) Mining conditions (e) Observations during mining operations (f) Comparison and analogy with previous case histories of bursting. This approach will facilitate the judicious application of the burst control techniques to seismically hazardous areas.

Mining of copper ore and the related industries play an important role in Iran?s economy. Copper ore production in Iran accounts for 75% of the total production in the Middle East. All activities related to copper, that is, exploration, production, refinement etc are owned and managed by state owned companies. Decisions have been made to privatize all these activities. To assess the success of this privatization process, different components of the industry must be subject to economic analysis. In this paper, the cost estimation of all operations has been carried out. The total potential and attainable revenues have also been estimated using historical data available from the industry. Risk is a major factor in all mining activities and the copper industry of Iran has been subject to risk factors arising from many internal and external variables. These variables have been recognized and their effects evaluated. The effect of risk on the economic feasibility of the operations in the industry has also been analyzed.

Determination of the fusibility of coal ash consists in melting a pyramid of the ash to fluid under prescribed conditions . The conditions of the test are specified by the American Society for Testing Materials4/ and must be adhered to strictly if comparable results are to be obtained . The Society formerly specified a particular type of furnace , but with improvements in design of both electric and gas furnaces , it was decided by the Society to specify only essential details of the test . The Chairman of Committee D - 5 , Coal and Coke , of the American Society for Testing Materials suggested that the Coal Analysis Section of the Bureau of Mines conduct a cooperative investigation on the effect of furnace type and atmosphere upon fusibility of coal ash . The Coal Analysis Section enlisted the aid of a number of laboratories using the more common furnaces to cooperate in the investigation . Four types of gas furnaces burning natural and manufactured gases and two types of electric furnaces with different methods of maintaining a reducing atmosphere were employed . The results from the survey are tabulated herein , and some comparisons are made . There were not enough data from any particular furnace and atmosphere to make a reliable statistical analysis . However , definite tendencies are evident , and attention is called to them by direct comparison. in tables .

"Crushing and grinding are the two most common industrial processes. These processes consume nearly 20 per cent of the entire electric power produced worldwide. This enormous amount of electric power consumed results from the fact that modern crushing and grinding machines employ the processes first introduced by the prehistoric man, namely those of compression, impact, attrition, and cutting. The material thus handled decomposes indiscriminately, and almost completely ignoring the microscopic cracks and other defects of its structure. Apart from the irrational use of the power, the crushing and grinding processes currently in use result in irretrievable loss of useful components or else in a substantial deterioration of the final products obtained, all as a result of incomplete grinding or, reversely, of overgrinding, palletizing, or fracture of particles.The principal type of equipment that has almost universally been used all over the world for more than 150 years for crushing both natural and synthetic minerals comprises unbalanced jaw and cone crushers. The driving element of crushing bodies in these machines is an unbalanced weight, which transfers the crushing body, allowing it to squeeze the material within the eccentricity value only. The maximum reduction ratio achieved by such a drive is 5, which is due to the rigid kinematic arrangement of the crusher, its dynamic unbalance, and the impossibility of increasing the number of impacts on the material being crushed. Moreover, conventional machines cannot cope with super hard materials, and their mechanism is vulnerable to damage by uncrushable objects.On the basis of fundamental research into the theories of solid body and vibration, OAO Mekhanobr- Tekhnika have developed a range of vibrating jaw and cone inertia crushers that make a reduction ratio of 30 feasible in an open-circuit operation with the reduction ratio monitored within a wide range. In these crushers, the eccentric drive is replaced with a vibrating one. In this way the rigid kinematic drive became dynamic, thus allowing pieces of material to be crushed in a thick layer due to the effect of their bumping into each other, and with the amplitude changing automatically. Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

Longwall tailgates in coal mines are often subject to severe mining induced loading and deformation. Innovative tailgate supports have been developed over the years to provide safe and economical access and a ventilation pathway at the tailgate. The support capacity and yield capabilities of the supports need to be matched to the loading imposed by the surrounding rock mass. The ground response curve can be used to represent the rock mass response to mining and its effect on support systems. The FLAC finite difference code was used to supplement field results by simulating a longwall tailgate and the associated ground response. The ground response curve is developed by modeling tailgate excavations with different internal support pressures and recording the resulting convergence. Ground response curves are developed for two typical longwalls operating in the Pittsburgh seam with weak and strong immediate roof. An additional model is presented in which the effect of weak overburden strata is simulated. The ground response is shown to be significantly affected by the strength of the immediate roof as well as the main roof. The importance of yield capacity of standing support is demonstrated. Gob height and compaction are found to affect the amount of convergence in the tailgate. The potential exists to develop site specific tailgate design curves by combining model results with field observations.

Higher production, better safety standard, and potential for automation are some of the benefits of longwall mining. Today, longwall face advances at a faster rate exposing many diversified rock layers in a short period of time. It is now a serious challenge to cope with ground control problems such as roof falls, face and floor failure, and excessive shield loading as fast as possible to minimize production and monetary losses. In Illinois coal mines, the existence of weak floor strata blow the coal seam may pose additional problems related to floor heaving, shield base punching, and associated roof and face falls. In this study, the effects of weak floor on longwall ground control are analyzed using two-dimensional finite element models. A two-leg 635.6-ton (700-short-ton) yielding capacity shield is included in the models to evaluate the effects of different thickness and material properties of the weak floor. The study indicates that the thickness and material properties of weak floor have significant effects on shield loading, the distribution and intensity of front abutment stress, failure zones in the surrounding strata, roof-to-floor convergence, and floor punching by the shield base.

So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

La efectividad de un equipo en la planta de la industria minera es importante en tanto se opere con eficiencia y efectividad. Empero, es necesario conocer el método de cálculo que se ha empleado para determinar la tasa de efectividad del equipo y sobre qué datos se han hecho los cálculos. En esta perspectiva, el presente trabajo describe las herramientas utilizadas en Southern Perú Cooper Corporation para el logro de la calidad de trabajo a través del incremento de la productividad y control de los costos. Para ello, se han utilizado herramientas como: la recolección de datos, visualización de datos, diagramas de Pareto y análisis de beneficios. Asimismo, para una óptima efectividad del equipo deben mantenerse registros precisos de la operación del equipo.

Technological advances in underground coal mining have reduced fatalities but may not have reduced worker exposure to cumulative injury risk factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cumulative injuries before and after the implementation of technological advances in underground coal mining and to make a general cost estimate for these injuries. A previously published algorithm was utilized to identify cumulative injuries within the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) database for two data sets: 1983-1984 and 2003-2004. For both, the following were determined: the number and percentage of cumulative injuries, the average days lost, the average age at the time of injury, the average years of experience and the general cost estimate by body part. The percentage of cumulative injuries remained largely unchanged (37 percent in the 1983-1984 period and 33 percent in the 2003-2004 period). The average number of lost days due to cumulative injuries increased (36±55 days and 62±82 days, respectively), which may have been due to the increased worker age (seven years older in the 2003-2004 period), increased length of employment (seven years longer in the 2003-2004 period) or other factors such as changes in medical practices. Cumulative injuries to the back decreased by 10 percent, while cumulative injuries to the knee increased by 8 percent. The reduction in back injuries may be due to the implementation of assist devices, while the increase in knee injuries may be related to kneeling/crawling in low-seam mines. Cumulative injuries were found to remain a major financial burden on the industry. Recently, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed tools to assist mining companies with incorporating an ergonomics process into their existing health and safety programs. The participating companies have reported tremendous success. Therefore, it is recommended that ergonomics processes be implemented as a means to systematically identify and address the root causes to cumulative injuries and ultimately reduce costs.

Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources. A resource document, prepared for the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines, which outlines aspects of occupational health and safety in the Canadian metallurgical industry has been expanded to provide examples of some practical solutions. General process descriptions are provided in conjunction with some of the major potential hazards associated with each step. Emissions to the working environment, particularly around converters, are discussed. Newer metallurgical processes, the role of automation and other advances in the metallurgical industry are described with respect to their impact on the work place. The role of staff and unit employees in providing safe working conditions in the complex metallurgical plant of today is outlined and the need for close cooperation within the human sector emphasized. The technology is available and is being applied to integrate the complex process requirements with realistic regulations to control emissions and provide a safe, healthy environment in metallurgical plants.

Extensions to the Convention Centre in Adelaide, South Australia consisted in part of construction over the existing railway system comprising nine rail lines and passenger platforms. Vibro-pile (Aust) won the design and construct tender with a solution comprising over 500 cast insitu concrete piles. The pile types were 500 to 900mm diameter non-displacement CFA piles and 400mm diameter displacement V-piles. The V-pile is a cast insitu screw pile developed by Vibropile (Aust) Pty Ltd. Both pile types were installed with minimal noise and vibration required for the project, while the displacement V-pile had the advantage over the CFA pile by developing the same pile capacity but with a smaller diameter and with minimal spoil. The latter was important in alleviating spoil removal problems near the railway tracks and disposal of potentially contaminated spoil. The results of dynamic compression load testing and static lateral load testing indicated that the performance of a 400 mm V-pile was equivalent to a 500 mm CFA for this site. The lateral load testing indicated that the surficial soils have a major influence on the load-deflection response, but despite the site containing up to 4 m of filled ground, the piles were found to carry the required lateral loads satisfactorily.

"This paper illustrates the possibilities of applying what is essentially a physical soil-washing technique for treatment of soil contaminated by semi-volatile hydrocarbons in order to reduce the level of pollution to that permitted by Italian regulations.The ground around a factory producing lubricating-oil additives consists of silty-sandy soils which have long been contaminated by heavy hydrocarbons, especially branched alkyl benzenes and naphthalene derivatives. Pollution is particularly marked in some zones (hot-spots) where Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) values are as high as 7000 ppm. The hydrogeological characterization showed the presence of a gravely soil in a sandy/silty matrix, with big stones making preferential paths to the water circulation. The permeability is 10-5 m/s and the water-table occurs at about 3 m below ground level.After laboratory and pilot-scale studies on representative samples of in-situ soils with TPH between 2700 and 7000 ppm a flow-sheet is proposed for reducing TPH values below the acceptable limits in Italy, namely 700 ppm for hydrocarbons with more than 12 carbon atoms and less than 250 ppm for those with fewer.On the basis of indications provided by laboratory tests a mainly physical treatment process of soil washing has been developed. This is used to clean-up soil from a site polluted by non-volatile hydrocarbons with a high TPH value. The process involves a high-density attrition stage followed by wet screening at 0.5 mm and then wet-gravity separation of the minus 0.5 mm fraction in the centrifugal field.The gravity separation products consist of a light fraction with particle size finer than 15 micron which contains most of the pollutants, and a heavy coarse fraction with TPH values conforming to the limits set by Italian regulations (less than 700 ppm hydrocarbons whose structure contains more than 12 C atoms, and less than 250 ppm of hydrocarbons with less than 12 C atoms)."

The United States not only is the largest producer of phosphate rock but also manufactures and consumes greater quantities of phosphate products than any other country. New and expanding uses will increase even further the demand for this basic raw material. Only a small proportion of the total quantity of phosphate rock mined and marketed is consumed directly in a raw or unprocessed state; the vast bulk is chemically treated and converted into [ertilizer] and a wide variety of finished products that play a vital role in [r] national economy. Three fundamental methods are employed in decomposing phosphate rock. 1. Reduction by carbon at high temperatures. 2. Treatment with one or more acids. 3. Calcination or fusion with silica, sodium salts, magnesium minerals, or small quantities of phosphoric acid.

Rock mass characterisation is a critical component of effective stope design. Unexpected excessive stope dilution or uneconomic stope sizes can be the result of rock mass characterisation that is not representative of actual stope conditions. Comprehensive characterisation of the rock forming the stope hanging wall, back, ends and footwall is best done by a rock mechanics or ground control expert, however, this is time consuming and is often limited by available access. There are two general approaches for characterising a stope hanging wall for dilution estimating. Detailed classification and mapping data can be collected in local areas where good exposure is available. Personnel, exposure and time are usually not available to do a thorough analysis for all stopes. The stope hanging walls are then broken into lenses or domains and similar conditions are assumed for each area. The second approach consists of using readily available data such as RQD. Other rock mass properties which influence hanging wall behaviour are estimated based on back analysing a few case histories. Stope design is then based on the variability of the one parameter, such as RQD, that is consistently measured for the rock mass surrounding the ore body. This paper presents a third approach which looks, in depth, at the interpretation of geological core logging data for rock mass characterisation. Several rock mass properties that influence stope design, such as joint alteration, rock mass strength, joint spacing and orientations, have been linked to data collected by the mine geologists. This drill hole logging data was calibrated against underground mapping and used to back analyse the dilution prediction for mined-out stopes.
