The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

What is required for the mining industry to grow and prosper in a politically challenging world? The answer to this can be summarized as “the industry’s three priorities.” The first priority is gaining access to the world’s mineralized jurisdictions. The second is establishing a measure of security and predictability in government treatment of mining. Confidence in the stability of the fiscal and legal framework within which mining operates is necessary to encourage the investment of large amounts of capital in mine development. The third priority is sustaining the industry’s welcome during the long term in those jurisdictions worthy of investment.

Two of the largest industries in northern Michigan, pulp and paper manufacturing and iron mining, formed a mutually beneficial partnership and collaborative research program to utilize paper mill residuals for waste rock stockpile reclamation. Historically, the majority of the paper industry’s residuals have been disposed of in landfills. The beneficial use of paper mill residuals for mine reclamation provides an environmentally sound recycling solution for the solids generated at northern Michigan paper mills and eliminates the need to strip additional overburden (glacial till) for final mine reclamation. Residuals offer a cost-effective source of organics and nutrients necessary for successful reclamation and waste rock stockpiles offer an economical and environmentally sound solution for disposal of residuals. The goal is to successfully pioneer technical development of paper mill residuals to accomplish vegetation of steep waste rock stockpile slopes and benches to establish a self-sustaining plant community that meets final reclamation requirements. Of the various types of iron mining wastes, rock stockpiles pose the greatest reclamation challenge. Success depends on incorporating sufficient organic matter into the rock stockpiles to produce a growth medium that can sustain vegetation without the need of overburden. This is an ongoing research program that is evolutionary in nature with numerous field trials, greenhouse studies, data collection and monitoring over multiple growing seasons. The program is a combination of innovative ideas and accepted reclamation practices that is proving to be a beneficial and economic approach to paper mill residual management and mine reclamation that will eventually lead from research to standardized reclamation procedures.

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

Magnesium alloys containing nickel, nickel and manganese, lithium, lithium and manganese, and lithium and aluminum were investigated. Melting, casting, and mechanical working techniques and the heat treatment of various compositions were studied. Amenability to cold and hot working was shown for many compositions. The magnesium-nickel and magnesium-nickel-manganese alloys failed to develop superior mechanical properties and were very low in resistance to corrosion. The magnesium-lithium series, although entirely plastic, had low strength properties. The addition of small amounts of aluminum to the Mg-Li base did not affect greatly either the ductility or the strength; further additions developed increased strength, but only at room temperature, and the alloys became brittle with age. Continued study, concentrating on the ductile lithium-rich beta phase as a base composition for ternary and quaternary systems, is recommended.

Lime addition to acid mine drainage waters (AMD), possibly accompanied by aeration, has been the basis for their remediation by precipitation of predominantly metal hydroxides. An efficient novel alternative technique causes precipitation of double M(II)-M(III) hydroxy sulfates which readily precipitate and are easily dewatered. When the Fe(II)/Fe(III) + Al(III) ratio of the AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate (GP) Process provides a more effective alternative to normal liming/aeration. The process can be adapted to give a continuous in-line treatment by the choice of suitable computer-controlled reactors designed to improve the liming efficiency, reduce scaling and control the rate of treatment. The processes are described in terms of the chemistry involved.

The optical properties of Au nanoparticles have been known for some time, with both Au colloids and Au nanoparticles embedded in glasses having been extensively studied. In this study, Pt nanoparticles have been incorporated into Au colloids, and the linear and non-linear optical properties investigated. UV-VIS spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectroscopy and the z-scan method have been used to examine the effects of such additions.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco's decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco's precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay's ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. The time frame required to complete the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for a new mine, or for the expansion of an existing mine, can range between 9 months to 24 months, or more. The time frame will vary depending on whether an Environmental Assessment (EA) or an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be completed. Completing properly designed baseline studies to collect natural resource data to support the EA or EIS prior to the start of the NEPA process can shorten this time frame. The two year natural resource baseline study completed by Homestake Mining Company for the Ruby Hill Mine, located in Eureka County, Nevada will be used as the case study to describe how properly designed and executed natural resource baseline studies streamlined the NEPA process.

To reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase self-sufficiency in energy, nowadays, there is an increasing interest to produce heat, power and transportation fuels from renewable resources. Solid biomass is one of the most important renewable energy sources for meeting this target. However, fouling, slagging, and corrosion threaten long-term operation availability and costs of biomass power plants. Slags accumulated on the surfaces of superheaters, which decrease thermal efficiency, often constitute a considerable percentage of complex inorganic phases. However, thermodynamic properties of the complex inorganic phases and their combined effect, which will help to deal with the slag related problems during high-temperature biomass combustion processes, are not well known. In the present paper, thermodynamic properties of K-, Ca-, and Na-based inorganic phases and their mixtures under different gas conditions are both critically reviewed and experimentally studied. The obtained results are presented and discussed.

The Pennsylvania anthracite region is composed of four fields, namely, the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern. It is in the eastern part of Pennsylvania and is shown on figure 1. The anthracite industry is confronted with a crucial problem of inundation by water impounded in underground pools in many mines and by infiltration of water from streams and pools on the surface (3). The deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, and the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered as a State problem rather than a national one (1, 4, 6, 7). Anthracite was discovered in Pennsylvania in 1762, and the first mining company was formed in 1793. It was not until 1812 that anthracite began to receive recognition in the Philadelphia market as a domestic fuel, and by 1838 the annual production was nearly 1 million net tons. Since anthracite mining began, mine water has become progressively more difficult and costly to handle because of the extraction of anthracite both underground and along the outcrops of the beds, until at the present time mine drainage is a major anthracite-mining problem. Mine water is handled at the anthracite mines as follows: (a) by pumping, (b) by drainage tunnels, (c) by combination of pumping and drainage tunnels, and (d) by water hoists (hoisting water by means of large buckets) (4, 5,6, 7). This paper covers removal of the water from mines by means of pumping plants. Pumping is indispensable in the production of anthracite (5). The cost of pumping mine water has increased progressively since anthracite mining began. Some collieries have been forced to discontinue mining because of the high cost of pumping.

Cost evaluations were made for five processes for producing 100,000 tons of electrorefined copper per year from a chalcopyrite concentrate. The processes were (1) conventional smelting with all furnace gases vented to the atmosphere; (2) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases vented to the atmosphere; (3) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases to a citrate system plant; (4) conventional smelting with all furnace gases routed to a citrate system plant; and (5) a modified smelting process in which the concentrate is roasted before being charged to the reverberatory furnace, with roaster and converter gases routed to an acid plant. The total fixed capital costs of the plants were estimated as (1) $56.7 million, (2) $77.4 million, (3) $87.2 million, (4) $73.9 million, and (5) $77.0 million, respectively. Total S02 removal from stack gases as sulfuric acid or sulfur for each process was (1) none, (2) 66 percent, (3) 99 percent, (4) 98 percent, and (5) 78 percent. Assuming no credit for byproduct sulfur or sulfuric acid, total operating costs per pound of electro-refined copper produced were estimated as (1) $0.081, (2) $0.103, (3) $0.119, (4) $0.111, and (5) $0.103, respectively.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. The orogenic gold deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Orogenic gold deposits are typically quartz vein deposits formed in fault and shear systems at crustal levels within and above the brittle ductile transition zone, at depths of 3 12 km and temperatures from 200¦ to 400¦C. In New Zealand, orogenic gold deposits are found in regionally metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age. The deposits in Paleozoic rocks include those at Golden Blocks in Northwest Nelson, Lyell and Reefton on the West Coast, and Preservation Inlet in Fiordland. Quartz veins are developed along shear zones that dip steeply and generally strike parallel to the axes of folding in the greywacke and argillite/slate host rocks, although most are discordant to bedding. The lodes are typically less than 1 m wide and extend an average 200 m horizontally and vertically, but the Birthday Reef at Blackwater, Reefton, the largest quartz vein deposit in Paleozoic rocks, averages 60 cm in width and was mined over a strike length of 1070 m, and to a depth of 830 m. Disseminated gold occurs adjacent to the quartz lodes at Globe-Progress and some other Reefton deposits. The deposits in Mesozoic rocks are hosted in schist of Otago and Marlborough, and schist and greywacke of the Southern Alps. The lodes are typically lensoidal, less than 1 m wide and localised along single or multiple parallel shear zones that generally dip steeply, and are discordant to the schist foliation and bedding. A notable exception is Macraes, where the lodes are developed in the semi-concordant, low angle Hyde Macraes Shear Zone that has a strike length greater than 25 km.

THIS REPORT gives results of an investi¬gation of the carbonizing properties of coals from Pittsburgh bed, Jamison No. 9 mine, Marion County, W. Va., and from Upper Freeport bed, Bull Run No. 1 mine, Preston County, W. Va. The study included Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate the plastic, expanding, and agglutinating properties of coal. A blend of each coal was carbonized in the 500-pound slot oven. The carbonization sample of Pittsburgh coal contained 2.7 percent moisture, 35.8 percent volatile matter, 54.4 percent fixed carbon, 7.1 percent ash, and 0.9 percent sulfur. It contained 60.9 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and had a heating value of 14,780 B. t. u. per pound on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. It therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous and was blended with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. Upper Freeport coal contained 2.8 percent moisture, 27.7 percent volatile matter, 60.9 percent fixed carbon, 8.6 percent ash, and 1.0 percent sulfur, as carbonized. It contained 69.5 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and therefore ranks as medium-volatile bituminous. It was blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh coal from Allegheny County Pa.

The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique.
