Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. A major aim of the GOLD 2003 conference, is to promote new gold related science and technology with a view to developing new useful industrial applications for gold. Current industrial uses have provided a steady annual industrial demand for gold of around 350-400 tonnes in recent years, the bulk of which is centred on electronics applications, with dental uses constituting the second largest application. However, there is good reason to believe that whilst gold will continue to play a major role in these sectors in the future, substantial growth of demand is not anticipated. Increased industrial demand for gold is only likely to come through the emergence of new applications, probably most significantly in five broad market sectors: ? Pollution and emission control technologies, including fuel cells. ? New uses for gold in advanced electronics, electrical systems and devices. ? Chemical processing of a range of bulk and speciality chemicals, using gold based catalysts ? Advanced coatings exploiting the novel properties of gold, particularly in nanoparticulate form. ? New biomedical uses for gold including medical treatments, drugs, implants, sensors and devices. There is cause for optimism that many new applications for gold could emerge in these sectors over the next decade and that this will lead to a substantial growth in demand for gold. It is clear that many of these new opportunities will be based on a chemical approach to synthesis of useful products rather than what has historically been a materials or mechanical approach. To turn this expectation into reality requires sustained support of R & D and a determination to exploit this new science and technology into viable commercial applications.

Estimates of the "plasticity" of a metal are commonly deduced from three types of test—tensile, torsion and impact. The several results have been more or less at variance, though this disparity has attracted little notice, largely perhaps because they have been expressed in different terms. The discrepancy between the results of the three tests becomes obvious when each is made at a series of low temperatures, for the temperature range within which the "plasticity" of iron largely disappears proves to be very different in the three types of test. The rather abrupt disappearance of "plasticity" of iron within a narrow temperature range cannot be due to any physicochemical change (such as a precipitation) taking place in the material at that time, because the original plasticity is immediately regained when the temperature of the material is brought above the sensitive range. Accordingly this difference in behavior shows that the "plasticity" of a metal depends upon the mode of action of the stresses which produce the deformation, and therefore upon the method of test. Analysis of the stresses leads to the conclusion that the observed plasticity of a metal is determined by the relation between its resistance to rupture by separation and its resistance to shear (slip), on the one hand, and between the effective normal and shearing stresses on the other; and that the relation between the two resistances does not in general remain constant with change of temperature, and may somehow be altered to some extent by the previous treatment of the specimen. This suggests the view that the results of none of the usual mechanical tests are directly comparable even for a single metal tested at a series of temperatures, or for a series of metals at one temperature, because the proportion of the total resistance of the metal to the test contributed by the

Among the investigations that the Bureau of Mines is conducting witha view to increasing efficiency in the utilization of fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government is an investigation of the processesthat take place in a foundry cupola during a melt. Some observations on the results of cupola tests of cokes at the Government fuel-testing plant in St. Louis, Mo., the coke being fromcoal from many coal fields of the United States, have been stated in a previous bulletin.s Especial attention was given to the meltinglosses that resulted from the use of different grades of coke, light and porous or heavy and dense. These losses amounted in one instance to 52.5 per cent of the iron charged and showed, in convincing manner, the need of exact information in regard to conditions in the fuelbed of the cupola.b Melting losses of iron have been fully appreciated but little under-- stood. The fact that these losses were possible with either light or heavy coke led to the belief that by using small charges 80 placed that. melting would take place in that zone of the cupola where the highest heat and the smallest percentage of oxygen prevailed and by confiningall melting to this zone these losses would be eliminated and the economical use of practically any coke produced for metallurgical purposes would become possible. This widening of the field from whichcoke might be drawn for foundry purposes would serve to place the foundryman in an independent position as regards his source of supply, and would tend to conserve the better grades of coking coals, which are being rapidly exhausted, by making the poorer grades available for mixing with them. In order to investigate conditions within a cupola, the Bureau of Mines as a first step decided to install a commercial cupola, to sample the gases during their travel from the tuy~res upward, and to determine the temperature of the fuel bed.

"Introduction.Recent experiments (Fieldner, A.C., Katz, S.H., Kinney, S.P., and Longfellow, E.S., Poisonous gas from carbon tetrachloride fire extinguishers, Jour. Franklin Institute, October, 1920, pp. 543-565), by the Bureau of Mines have shown that carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids when applied to fires produce small quantities of irritating and poisonous gases which may be dangerous in very closely confined spaces where conditions are such that the user can not escape without breathing the fumes. The results of the experiments have been confirmed in an independent investigation by the Underwriters Laboratories (Nuckalls, A.H., Corrosive action and products formed when carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids are applied to fires, Nat. Fire Protection Assoc. Quarterly, vol. 14, January, 1921, pp. 221-236) who conducted similar experiments for the purpose of determining the corrosive action of these fumes on metals. Both investigations showed that carbon tetrachloride vapor, hydrochloric acid gas, and phosgene were produced in addition to the ordinary products of combustion, such as smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The Bureau of Mines' tests were made by applying a one-quart extinguisher to a wood fire of excelsior in a gas-tight room of 1000 cubic foot capacity. The glass and metal construction of this chamber limited the experimental fire to very small dimensions. It was, therefore, deemed desirable to make a test on a larger scale in the entry of the Bureau's experimental mine in order to similate more nearly the practical use of carbon tetrachloride and other types of extinguishers in mines.Description of extinguishers.Two series of tests were made under identical conditions on different days. Commercial carbon tetrachloride extinguishers were used in the first series of tests and ""foamite firefoam"" extinguishers in the second series of tests."

ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.

THE Lake Shore mine has been developed by two vertical shafts, with level intervals at 200 feet to the 2200 level and at 125 feet below this horizon. A main cross-cut joins the two shafts on all levels to the bottom of No. 3 shaft, and opening into these cross-cuts are the ore passes and sand passes, which are completed from surface To the 4450 level. In the west part of the mine, additional connections have been made between No. 1 and No. 2 veins, through which the major part of the ore from No. 2 vein west is routed to drifts in No. 1 vein. With the lesser amount of stoping on No. 1 vein, this arrangement permits better haulage to be maintained. The ore passes are driven at 50 degrees from the ends of short cross-cuts off the main ones and are broken through to the levels above at the mouths of the short cross-cuts, to allow for dumping on each level. The passes are controlled at each level by ball-and-chain gates and deliver to crushers and thence to loading pockets, shown in Figure 1. That system is quite flexible in that it is possible to by-pass the crushers at any station and load from either shaft at a number of different pockets. The sand passes are driven from the main cross-cuts at the same inclination as, and parallel to, the ore passes. Each is equipped with a chute and dump hole, so that waste or sand fill may be loaded or dumped at each level. A transfer door, hinged on the bottom, is installed opposite the chute for by-passing fill from one level to the next, and in the closed position protects the opening at the top of the pass. The dump hole situated beside the transfer door is protected by a grizzly with 10-inch spaces. Waste rock may be withdrawn from the system through No. 3 shaft loading pocket at the 2950 level to a waste bin on surface. Levels are developed by drifts in No. 1 and No. 2 veins for their entire lengths. Subsidiary breaks are followed at a later date, when full information has been obtained by exploration, and a considerable amount of development by sub-drifts is carried out in the upper part of the mine, particularly in more or less erratic sections of No. 1 vein.

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.

The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

The Bureau of Mines conducted beneficiation and smelting studies on siliceous offgrade manganese samples to indicate effective methods of manufacturing silicomanganese from materials that cannot be economically beneficiated to meet General Services Administration (GSA) specifications for stockpiling. Laboratory and pilot-plant flotation tests were conducted on 2 samples, 1 from the waste-tailings dump of the Domestic Manganese & Development Co , Butte, Mont., and the other from the Nettie mine in the Butte-Philipsburg area. Smelting tests were made on the combined concentrates from the pilot-plant flotation tests and on part of the tailings sample The flotation scheme found to be adequate in laboratory tests and later in the pilot-plant tests consisted of flotation by a fuel oil-tall oil emulsion in an acid circuit (pH )-1-.8 to 5.0). The oil-emulsion reagent flocculated the manganese minerals and selectively floated them from the siliceous gangue, In the pilot-plant flotation test on Butte-mill tailings 90.1 percent of the manganese was recovered in a concentrate that analyzed 32.6 percent Mn, 4.8 percent Fe and 28.1 percent Si02. In the test on Nettie mine ore 90.8 percent of the manganese was recovered in a concentrate that analyzed 36 6 percent Mn, 5.5 percent Fe, and 26-4 percent Si02.

Liquified petroleum gas mixed with oxygen has been used as a new type of mixed gas source for gas detonating system. The experimental studies have been done on the detonation feature of gas detonating transmission in a long and thin tube, the transmitting reliability for detonating network, the design on gas exploder and test devices. The results of the study show that (1 )Liquified petroleum mixed with oxygen can be used as a new type of regular gas source. (2)The transmission of detonating wave is reliable for new type of mixed gas in a 500-meter long plastic tube with 3mm inner diameter and the detonating velocity is up to 2500m/s. The detonating wave can surely initiate and transmit several branched gas detonating cap and explosive through the end of detonating network, the tubes inner diameter for the detonating quenching is 0. I’mm. (3)The gas exploder designed by authors can be used for gas propotional distribution,strong turbulence-mixing,initiating by reflex shock wave and safety control purposes. The developed double flowmeter can be used together or seperately in responsible for main testing in the system.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.

"A method for determining the fineness of Au in electrum from the composition of fahlore coexisting with pyrite and chalcopyrite is presented. This method is based on previously published experimental brackets and activitycomposition models for electrum and fahlore, and it is potentially useful for defining temperatures of hydrothermal mineralization and retrograde evolution of precious metals deposits. The authors demonstrate that it successfully predicts compositions of electrum reported for this assemblage in the literature and illustrate its application for three gold-quartz vein deposits from the Coeur d’Alene mining district, Idaho, that are prospects of the New Jersey Mining Company, the Coleman vein, High-Grade prospect, and Silver Strand mine. Temperatures calculated from average electrum compositions estimated from gravity concentrates (molar Au/(Au+Ag) = 0.76-0.39) and from microprobe analyses of the fahlores (molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.039 ± 0.004, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.57 ± 0.03, As/(As+Sb) = 0.23 ± 0.02) from the Coleman vein indicate that the electrums underwent retrograde re-equilibration to temperatures between about 80°C and 240°C, roughly 80°C below the temperature of hydrothermal mineralization and 10°C to 40°C above the temperature inferred for retrograde equilibration of Fe and Zn between sphalerite and fahlore. Fahlores from the High-Grade prospect [molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.009 ± 0.004, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.55 ± 0.11, and As/(As+Sb) = 0.04 ± 0.03] and Silver Strand mineralized zone [molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.10 ± 0.04, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.63 ± 0.02, and As/(As+Sb) = 0.06 ± 0.02] exhibit strong core to rim depletions in Ag due to retrograde operation of the reaction1/10Cu10Fe2Sb4S13 + Ag + FeS2 =Cu-fahlore electrum pyriteCuFeS2 + 1/10Ag10Fe2Sb4S13chalcopyrite Ag-fahlorewhich proceeds to the left with decreasing temperature. Electrum inclusions in arsenopyrite from the High-Grade prospect [molar Au/(Au+Ag) = 0.90 ± 0.02] define a minimum bound on the temperature of hydrothermal mineralization of 273°C, and the temperatureelectrum composition curve constructed for the most Ag-rich fahlore in the Silver Strand mine indicates that the fineness of its electrum is significantly less than in the other deposits."

In 1997 a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded (i) that Canadian industry and NRCan should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and (ii) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale. The need for INAP (International Network for Acid Prevention) was strongly endorsed by company, university, consultant and government experts from Australia, Canada and the U.S. who were convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP's members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed as sufficient justification for the formation of INAP. INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulfide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulfidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage. This paper will explore the international efforts and activities of INAP.

The value of mineral production in Alabama continued to increase and reached a new high of $260 million, 3 percent above the previous high established in 1967. Record high values were reported for bentonite, crushed marble, lime, miscellaneous clay, portland cement, salt, sand and gravel, and scrap mica. The value of coal, total cement, petroleum, and stone accounted for 87 percent of the State's total value of mineral production. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite and scrap mica and third in kaolin, masonry cement, and native asphalt.
