The realities of foundation enginering are that the work never proceeds exactly as expected. The various reasons, exploration, design, construction, and legal are discussed. Case histories are presented with an analysis of why the projects did not turn out as expected and how the difficulties might have been avoided.

This research investigates roof deformation and failure characteristics, as well as mechanical interaction between the panels of the roof strata above two adjacent working faces in a steeply inclined coal seam. Physical modeling with photogrammetry measurement method has been employed in this investigation. The movement of roof strata and section pillar, as well as the stratum morphological characteristics, was quantitatively analyzed. Results show that the roof movement direction above the two panels has zoning characteristics, especially in the lower panel. Roof migration in the lower panel of the working face is larger than that in the upper panel. The roof to floor closure perpendicular to the seam direction is larger than the sliding along the seam. The maximum roof concave and convex bending occurred at the middle and upper parts of both panels; the roof bending in the upper panel mining area indicates a larger mining disturbance induced by lower panel mining. The void ratio contour of the lower panel is an asymmetrically arched shape, which is different from that of the upper panel area. The higher roof strata above the upper panel exhibit separation and breaking, whereas the lower roof exhibits compression due to mining in lower panel. The section pillar is compressed and slides slightly, which aggravates the mechanical interaction between the panels and increases the caving height of the roof over the lower panel and the periodic weighting intensity

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling. Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.

Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

Recovery of Fine Gold Particles from Philippine Gold Deposits by Enhanced Gravity Concentration and Flotation The objective of the study is to determine the applicability of enhanced gravity concentration (EGC) and flotation for gold recovery. While gravity concentration methods have long been applied to gold ores, especially to free-milling types that requires minimal beneficiation, flotation for gold recovery has not yet taken hold as a major operation in the Philippine setting. In this study, the application of EGC and flotation for gold is applied and compared to the existing methods for gold recovery. Two samples, with assays of 7.315 and 5.333 g Au/MT (samples 1 and 2, respectively) are used for this study. These samples are subjected to mineralogical studies and is found to have a gold-particle size ranging 10 to 200 microns. To verify the separation size, the mesh-of-grind (MOG) is used as the primary parameter for experimentation. Initially, the samples are stage-crushed, ground, and subjected to EGC using a Falcon SB40 Concentrator. Based on the results, the two samples showed that recovery increases with a finer MOG. The ratio of concentration (K) decreases with a finer MOG. This shows that there should be sufficient liberation of the gold values for EGC to be effective. The effect of the enhancement is to pronounce the difference in specific gravity of the minerals, promoting better separation. This is validated by the high recovery values of 86.97 per cent and 98.73 per cent exhibited respectively for samples 1 and 2 (at 54 microns). For the flotation runs, sample 2 with an average particle size of 80 per cent passing 74 microns is examined using thiocarbamate-based collectors for roughing and subsequently exhibited a recovery of 96.32 per cent. At this point, the concentration ratio (K) is noted as an important efficiency indicator for flotation process since it yielded a very low-mass and high-metal content concentrate.

In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. The form of the hill, a smooth, rounded dome, rising some 640 ft. above the plain and having a base diameter of n miles, lends itself ideally to the "bench" system of open-cut quarrying.Fig. 1 shows the relationship of the benches "A," "B" and "E" in their order of development. Dynamic rock anchors are interior fixtures developed by the author which promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The fixtures are designed to be placed in the ground with modern roof bolting equipment, such as the type used in the American coal mining industry. They are composed of a plastic form- able anchor tube which serves to fasten a buttress deformed rod which is thrust and turned into the plastic and in turn clamps the roof plate to the rock surface. Plastic tubes 10 to 16 inches in length provide sufficient anchorage to exceed the yield strength of steel rods 5/8, 3/4 or' 7/8 inches in diameter. This paper presents field testing and early work done on the device over the last seven years. Results of pull tests, creep tests, laboratory testing in concrete, and field testing under natural rock conditions demonstrate the uniqueness and effectiveness of this new support system. A second development which uses the dynamic rock anchor in conjunction with a resin cartridge to provide a stiffer anchorage system is also discussed. These products will be manufactured and marketed by Ingerso-11-Rand Co. under the trademark of DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS anchors.

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is located twenty-six kilometres east of Timmins, Ontario, within a metallurgical complex including a 109,000 MTPY zinc plant and a new 59,000 MTPY copper smelter and refinery. A complement of 159 persons is employed in the operation of the concentrator.Ore from the Kidd Creek Mine is crushed underground to minus 15. 0 cm, then transported twenty-seven kilometres by rail 1:0 the concentrator. After being crushed to minus 1. 6 cm, the ore is further processed by grinding and flotation.The concentrator commenced operations in November of 1966 at a designed capacity of 8,200 MTPD. Two parallel flotation and grinding circuits treated copper-zinc ore (2.28% Cu, 5.63% Zn) and a third treated silver-copper-lead-zinc ore (230 g/MT Ag; 0.57% Cu, 0.88% Pb, 7.89% Zn).By 1975, the concentrator was treating 9,100 MTPD of ore. Seven concentrates were being produced, namely, high silve1: copper, low silver copper, lead, low silver zinc, high silver zinc, pyrite and tin.Planned minesite expansion to a second underground mine required increased concentrator throughput. Expansion of the concentrator enabling a thirty-three percent increase in copper-zinc ore throughput occurred during the period 1975 through 1978. This expansion included increased load-in capacity, major redesign in the crusher house, the addition of a fourth grinding and flotation circuit, the building of a fourth dryer, and numerous expansions of services."

At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds.

A new process comprising metallizing reduction, magnetic separation, and electroheat melting separation is proposed with the aim of achieving high recoveries of iron, vanadium, and titanium from vanadium titanomagnetite. The effects of magnetic intensity, reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, and coal particle size on the efficiency of reductionmagnetic separation were investigated, the reaction mechanisms elucidated by SEM and EDS analysis, and the optimal process parameters established. Recoveries of up to 80.08% for titanium, 95.07% for iron, and 71.60% for vanadium were achieved. The reduction sequence is shown to be: Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe; Fe2TiO5 ? Fe2TiO4 + TiO2 ? Fe + FeTiO3 ? Fe + FeTi2O5 ? Fe + TiO2.

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson, County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut, coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 316-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an. extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

President Lien presented Mrs. Holmes with the first of speaker appreciation gifts presented by his firm Amax Coal West, Inc. These were books by Rand-McNally entitled The Executive Golfer Guide. Following the coffee break, Clark Moseley presented the first annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards for the safest mines in the eight member state region. The awards were based on: 1. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

Geochemical mapping provides a direct approach to delineating areas of epigenetic mineralisation and for relating the regional distribution of this mineralisation to an overall tectonostratigraphic and structural framework, as well as to extensive areas of hydrothermal alteration. Organic lake sediment is a widely available and effective sampling medium for regional geochemical mapping in Newfoundland, that has proved to be valuable in Au, Sb and W exploration

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions applicable to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance concerning the minimum size and/or in situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and predict exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust under the present conditions. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the minesite by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.
