The use of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) regional meetings as a forum to educate teachers on the role of minerals in our society has been immeasurably successful. Each year, on average about 3,500 to 4,000 teachers participate in each of the three regional NSTA meetings. At each of these meetings, nearly 2,000 teachers visit the “Minerals Coalition Booth” and receive free mineral samples and other educational support materials. Some rules of thumb for a successful booth at the NSTA are provided. Considering the level of effort for such a booth, are there alternatives? The NSTA also organizes a national annual meeting with attendance of about 20,000. All who have participated in a regional NSTA agree that the traditional approach of providing a mineral set and teacher materials for a substantial fraction of the 20,000 attendees is not feasible. Conceptual alternatives for minerals education at the national NSTA meeting are introduced and evaluated.

"The purpose of this paper are (1) to present a broad picture of the recognized methods of measuring the various forms of atmospheric pollution; (2) to evaluate the significance of such measurements; and (3) to suggest suitable methods for obtaining comparative information on the concentration of contaminants in city air.The atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth) consists of a mixture of gases. These gases and their usual proportions are:4/The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere ranges from almost zero (in very cold weather) to about 5 percent arid averages about 1.2 percent.Strictly speaking, any other substance in the atmosphere or an excess of any of the substances mentioned (with the possible exception of water) is a contaminant. Needless to say, there are many contaminants in the atmosphere.In accordance with their physical state, contaminants may be classified as gaseous or particulate, and the latter may be classified as solid or liquid matter. Particulate matter, especially when dispersed in some medium such as air or some other gas, sometimes is referred to as dispersoid, and the complete system of gas and dispersoid is referred to as aerosol.All substances on the earth are potential sources of atmospheric contaminants. Combustible materials (particularly fuel for heating and power), sea water, earth or soil, metals, and animals (including man) are some of the important sources of contaminants.Ordinarily gases are produced by chemical processes, whereas dispersoids are produced by both chemical and physical processes. There are two general dispersoid-producing processes: (1) Condensation, in which molecules join to form larger units or particles, and (2) disintegration, in which large units are reduced to the particulate range (which for the purpose of this article may be considered to be from 100 microns, or 1/254 inch, down to molecular size) by such processes as crushing, grinding, abrading, and atomizing.“Condensoid"" is a convenient term for dispersoids formed by condensation, and ""disintegrasoid"" for those formed by disintegration. Solid condensoids are sometimes called ""fume,"" solid disintegrasoids ""dust,"" liquid condensoids ""fog,"" and liquid disintegrasoids ""mist.""5/"

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data. Thunderbird is part of the Integrated Mining Systems (IMS) alliance. IMS offers the mining industry the most comprehensive line of monitoring and navigation products available today for mobile mine equipment. In addition to Thunderbird’s drill monitors and GPS systems, the product line includes: Fleet Management Systems for trucks and loaders; dragline and shovel monitors; GPS based navigation systems for shovels, dozers and other mobile equipment; and surveying systems. IMS uses common communication systems, operating systems, and hardware components in order to provide a truly Integrated Mining System.

A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

Scenario-level uncertainty is a representation of large-scale differences encountered when considering ultimate mining pits optimized over various subsets of stochastic realizations. Accounting for scenario-level uncertainty allows mine plans to be assessed against several probabilistic subsurface interpretations. Scenario-level uncertainty is found through clustering stochastic geostatistical realizations and optimizing final pits across the realizations in each cluster. Where these pits are geometrically different, plans for each scenario differ. Knowing these differences allows the value of each planning alternative to be assessed based on the value and relative probability of each scenario. These results also facilitate the use of formal decision-making frameworks for planning, leading to optimization that better represents the full statistical characterization of the deposit. An example utilizing this approach evaluates both infrastructure placement and drilling program requirements. In both cases, scenario-level uncertainty improves initial plans by limiting opportunity costs and identifying additional potential.

CFA piling is a ?blind? construction process that relies heavily on the rig instrumentation to produce sound piles. If the data measured and recorded during construction can be made available to engineers and managers within hours after construction then there are many economic and quality control benefits that can be realised. A state of the art CFA instrumentation and data management process has been developed in the UK. The key components of the instrumentation, GSM data service and the central database are described. Many benefits to the business have been realised and, where possible, these are quantified.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The results suggest that meaningful geochemical maps can be produced from very low-density surveys, and that existing data sets could perhaps be incorporated into such a map series with the use of a system such as Uniras software. There are still many problems to be resolved, however, including the compatibility of data derived from different analytical methods, and the precise methods to be employed will necessarily require international agreement. Sampling densities should be chosen on the basis of the scale of the geochemical and geological features to be distinguished and will vary from region to region. Reanalysis of selected samples from archives to increase the range of elements determined or to unify analytical methods is only likely to be effective if the original survey was at quite a low density

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. THE following note describing the behavior of copper under rather unusual conditions is offered here for its suggestiveness rather than as a complete study of the question. The examinations described were made because of a request for information concerning the embrittlement of copper when heated in a molten salt bath (sodium chloride) for the purpose of cleaning it, as well as for softening it. It is well known that metals may be rendered very brittle by electrolytic action, in aqueous solutions, in all probability by the action of nascent hydrogen, and it was suspected that perhaps the embrittlement of the copper by means of the molten salt was produced in a somewhat similar manner. It was found that the copper was in contact with iron (or steel) while immersed in the molten salt, through the occasional use of an iron stirring rod, iron forceps for handling the pieces, and an iron pot for containing the fused salt. In the electrochemical potential series iron and copper stand some distance apart, copper being electronegative to the iron. Assuming that the two metals bear a similar relation to each other, when immersed in a bath of molten salt, as they do in an aqueous solution, they would be expected to form a galvanic couple, the copper being the cathode. By this means the copper might be embrittled, as often happens in aqueous solutions, by the action of the liberated hydrogen. In this case, however, the embrittlement must be attributed to some other agent than hydrogen. To demonstrate how copper may be embrittled under these conditions, two small rods, one of copper and the other of mild steel, approximately 3/8 in. (9.5 mm.) in diameter, were immersed in a bath of sodium chloride that had been heated somewhat above its fusion point (melting point of sodium chloride is 819° C.) and an electromotive force of approximately 6 volts from a storage battery was impressed upon the system. Cameco has studied the concept of underground milling of high-grade uranium ore. Compared to conventional milling on surface, the underground milling scheme appears to offer significant cost savings and a lower environmental impact. The ternary system A14C3-AIN-Al203 has been examined to determine compositions which may display desirable high-temperature refractory properties. Powder methods were employed in the synthesis of all test compositions. Forming and sintering behavior was examined and hot-pressing parameters were measured. Several properties were studied for each composition of interest in the system. The properties included hydrolysis rate in moist air, elevated temperature oxidation rate, density, softening point, tensile strength, and rupture strength. In most cases equilibrium was not achieved, and the data are representative of a nonequilibrium system. Approximately 16 separate phases have been observed in the system. Forming behavior and selected properties of five compositions of interest were compared with those of aluminum oxide and aluminum nitride. None of the compositions compared favorably. Oxidation and vaporization appear to be serious drawbacks to the use of these compositions at elevated temperatures.

In the mining industry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used extensively to simulate air flow in underground mines. CFD modeling of pollutant transport in open-pit mines is relatively new. Modeling the actual pit geometry of an open-pit mine and the open domain is complex. The complexity is primarily due to the faceted geometry of an open-pit mine with its numerous associated sharp features. Important issues that are not considered carefully at the geometry level are generally propagated to the subsequent processes. Several challenges and pitfalls are encountered in modeling pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These challenges and pitfalls are related to the geometry, meshing, boundary conditions, and turbulence modeling parameterization. An appropriate mesh selection is critical. A detail discussion of the meshing of the domain of an open-pit mine is presented in this paper. The selection of an appropriate turbulence model, such as kappa-epsilon (?-e), large eddy simulation (LES), Reynolds stress model (RSM), etc., to obtain the best possible solution is equally significant. This paper discusses the various challenges in modeling the pollutant transport process in an open pit and some of the approaches adopted to address these challenges.

"Copper–cobalt extraction is a reagent-intensive process resulting in acid consumption greatly contributing towards production costs, which in the current market conditions curtail profitability. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have become an attractive approach in the mining and minerals industry for product concentration and reagent recovery based on the ability of the membrane to separate monovalent ions from divalent ions. NF membranes can selectively separate acids from metals and salts allowing acid to be recycled as well as the concentration and purification of product streams. Membrane technology in the field of copper–cobalt processing focusses on the concentration of Cu2+ and Co2+ in the pregnant leach solution, recovery of acid from waste streams to neutralization, recovery of valuable metals from waste ponds and process water recovery. This paper aims to provide insight into the potential applications of NF membranes in copper–cobalt processing circuits as well as a brief overview of the effects of process conditions on membrane performance and process development. INTRODUCTION The copper–cobalt industry commonly uses inorganic acids, such as sulfuric acid, in large quantities for primary leaching of copper–cobalt oxide ores and releaching during product purification (Stuurman et al., 2014). This results in numerous acidic intermediate streams containing high metal concentrations and acidic waste streams with low metal concentrations. Acid consumption typically accounts for 10–15% of the operating costs of mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia (Acid Plant Database, 2015). Due to remote mine locations, poorly maintained roads and cross-border conflict, the cost of sulphuric acid can range between USD 300 and 400 per ton. The pivotal role of acid in the copper–cobalt extraction process has driven many mines to build sulphuric acid plants on site to ensure a reliable acid supply, however elemental sulphur still needs to be imported which faces similar logistical challenges and contributes towards operating costs."

The design of tailings containment structures relies on well-understood engineering methods being applied consistently. Unfortunately, not all facilities are designed or managed to the same level of competency. To standardize procedures, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC, 1998) prepared a “Guide to Tailings Management.” It recommended review of designs and an assessment of the risks associated with tailings impoundments be implemented during all phases of amine life. This paper describes how the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) process can be used to define risks associated with the design, construction and operation of a tailings management facility. And it discusses how, once the risk tolerability curves (RTC) are defined for a project, they can assist the risk management (RM) process.

OWING to the gradual depletion of the hitherto plentiful supply of firewood in the immediate vieinity of Queenstown and Gormanston, which caused a steady increase in the cost of fuel for domestic purposes, the Mount Lyell Company took steps several years ago to make available as a substitute electric current from its Lake Margaret hydro-electric supply. In order to make this practicable it was necessary that the cost of electric power for heating purposes should compare favourably with the cost, of fuel, and the installation of domestic appliances brought within reach of the average householder, and efforts have been continuously directed towards this end since the year 1928.WATER HEATERSThe installation of electrical apparatus in local dwellings began with hot-water services, the heating elements being the types then procurable on the market and adapted to meet requirements.These, however, did not prove satisfactory, but the study of their bilure resulted in a type being developed locally which has overcome all difficulties. The first type of water heater evolved was an outside circulation one the element of which consisted of an iron pipe through which the water passed, insulated with micanite and wound with nichrome wire, the latter being covered with alundun cement to keep it in position and prevent oxidation. This was insulated on its outside surface with a layer of asbestos flour, and connected to the hot-water container as shown in Fig. 1. It was found, however, that the iron pipe had a short life, due to a certain amount of acidity in the water, and a copper pipe was substituted which proved very durable. Some heaters with this improved type of element are still operating after six years of use. The resistance wire is run at a very low current density, which ensures durability.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the fourth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. Them 7 symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized Lignite-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glenharold mine of the. Truax-Traer Goal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydro-electric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.
