The New Orient mine, owned and operated by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., has caused a great deal of comment and interest because of its unusual features and huge daily production. It is in Franklin County, Illinois, adjacent to the town of West Frankfort. The seam being mined is the Illinois No. 6 which in this locality is 9 to 12 ft. thick and lies approximately 500 ft. below the surface. Without fear of contradiction, it can be said that this is one of the largest coal mines in the world from a daily production standpoint. During 1928, New Orient produced 2,400,000 tons, which amounts to over 10,000 tons each day the mine operated that year. The mine is built for a capacity of 12,000 tons but has actually hoisted over 15,000 tons in one 8-hr, shift. This enormous production can perhaps be better visualized if it is realized that each day's operation depletes over two acres of coal. The general features of this mine have already been fully covered in a paper by George B. Harrington,' President of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In a paper of the nature of Mr. Harrington's, it was unnecessary to stress any particular phase of mining conditions, consequently the ventilation problems were touched upon but lightly. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe some of the problems which have been encountered in providing adequate ventilation for the mine. Ventilating Conditions The acreage allotted to New Orient mine has a length, north and south, of approximately 6 miles, and a width, east and west, of 2 to 4 miles. A number of important considerations caused the hoist shaft, air shaft and surface plant to be located near the southeast corner of the property, instead of near the center, as is usual. During the initial phase of the mine development, the mine was ventilated through these shafts, although there was a full realization that at some future date other shafts would be required.

The minerals barite (BaSO4-barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3-barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1980 consumed at least 90% of the world's production of 8.8 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite is much less common and abundant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world's barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir conditions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemically, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite homogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber industry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and linoleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other substances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weigh down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise

THERE has been much interest recently in the iron ore supply of the Lake Superior district. It may be of interest to this meeting to give some thought to this situation, dealing more particularly with the present great iron ore deposits of this section. Ores from its various iron ranges are the foundation of the tremendous tonnage of steel and iron of all kinds produced in the territory along and adjacent to the Great Lakes, drawing the bulk of its supply from this northwestern ore country. For a number of years estimates have been made of the quantity of available ore. The latest study, by M. C. Lake, chief geologist of the M. A. Hanna Co., is of great interest and brings the estimated tonnage to Jan. 1. 1929.

THE following brief description of the main features of the, engineering work was prepared for the use of members of the American Society of Civil Engineers and members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers on the occasion of their visits to the tunnels at the time-of their respective. annual meetings in New York, January and February, 1905. DESCRIPTION. Those portions. of the Pennsylvania Extension into Manhattan and Long Island, lying east of the Terminal Station and west of the East River, have been designated as the " Manhattan ?Cross-town:. Tunnels." They traverse a section of the city second in importance only to the financial district, and one that includes the larger hotels, retail shops and theaters and the residences of many of the best known citizens. Section "D," consisting of twin tunnels for west-bound express and local passenger traffic, lies under Thirty-third Street from a point 400 ft. west of the west line of Sixth Avenue, eastward to the river shaft, situated in the block between Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Streets east of First Avenue. Beginning at the east end, the tunnels are in separate excavations, leading westward from the subaqueous tubes, on a curve of large radius, gradually closing together until it is found more appropriate to drive them in a single excavation. At a point just west of Second Avenue they reach the tangent, aid from there westward lie directly under Thirty-third Street. At a point about 180 ft. west of the west line of Sixth Avenue, the center concrete-wall between the twin tunnels is omitted, and the excavation somewhat widened to make room for a third storage-track, and the tunnel continues to tile station portal in three-track section. THE discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the, surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.1 The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment Is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as -is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.

THE PETROLEUM DIVISION of the A.I.M.E. continued with its diversified activities during 1.935. Sessions at the New York meeting in February were devoted to production engineering, domestic and foreign oil production, and petroleum economics. The symposiums on domestic and foreign production proved their increased usefulness. The data accumulated for 1935 were added to those published during prior years in "Petroleum Development and Technology." A joint session on the use of metals in the petroleum industry was held by the Institute of Metals, Iron and Steel, and Petroleum Divisions. W. S. Farish, chairman of the board of the Standard Oil Co. (N. J.), was the principal speaker at the annual dinner. The October meeting, held in Hous¬ton, was characterized by an excellent program and large attendance. Four sessions were devoted to problems in estimating reserves, reservoir energy, properties of drilling muds, electrical logging, water flooding, and other subsurface studies. Foreign representatives of the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. presented a paper on surface tension and specific gravity of crude oil under reservoir conditions. TWO outstanding members of the Institute will be honored at the Annual Meeting this month: Robert Peele, who will accept his election to the small group of Honorary Members; and Clinton Hoadley Crane, president of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and William Lawrence Saunders Medalist for 1936. Eminence in the profession character, interest in Institute activities, and general recognition as a gentleman and a friend by so many people, have contributed to the election of Professor Peele. The Saunders Medal is for "achievement in mining." In awarding it to Mr. Crane the citation reads "For distinguished achievement in the successful development and operation of low-grade lead mines."

The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristics of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economi-cally sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydro-carbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates .3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residua,4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessi-tates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufac-turing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. DESPITE the handicap of reduced production in many districts, the mining industry in 1938 forged steadily ahead toward solution of its minor technical problems and has of-defected major advances in several fields. In California hydraulic mining for gold, shut down for forty years, will shortly be resumed following revision of restrictive laws. Disposal of hydraulicked ground is to be regulated by settling dams so as not to interfere with agriculture. Gold mining has been aided also by the development of a new high-efficiency dry amalgamator which applies the Ramsay mercury separator to the original de Phily process. Based on the principle that crushed ore will follow a rod into a mercury bath, this simple device is primarily adapted to dry areas and is to be available in small, multiple units suitable

Introduction Loading and hauling systems are evaluated in open pit mining for new properties, expanding existing operations, changing systems or equipment, and equipment replacement analysis. The objective of such evaluations is to determine the equipment needed to handle planned tonnages at the lowest cash flow cost. Cash flow costs are used to combine capital outlays with operating and maintenance costs. Leasing costs could be substituted for capital costs with appropriate modifications to calculation procedures. These modifications will not be covered. This chapter will describe methods of evaluating loading and hauling systems, concentrating on some of the more often raised questions concerning quantitative data. While the methods described are not the only ones in current use, they have a record of proven reliability. The shovel and haulage truck system is used In the examples because of its common use in open pit mines. In medium to large open pit mines, electric shovels and diesel-electric drive haulage trucks are normally used. The basic ideas presented in this chapter apply to all loading and hauling systems, with appropriate modifications. The process of performing a shovel and haulage truck evaluation can be time-consuming and tedious because of the quantity of data involved, but it is not particularly difficult. The examples used to Illustrate shovel and haulage truck evaluation are based on a hypothetical open pit mine operating 350 days per year producing 31 750- 000 t (35,000,000 st, 100,000 stpd) annually, of which 11 110 000 t ( 12,250,000 st, 35,000 stpd) are ore. Selection of the optimum shovel and haulage truck fleets will be shown. The principal sources of data for the examples or any other equipment evaluation are equipment manufacturers and actual operations. Whenever possible, actual operating experience should be used to verify estimates. The quantitative data presented herein are unrelated to a specific existing mining operation.

The impact of the work of Herty "et al" on modern liquid steel technology can only be evaluated by first setting the stage as it existed in 1926. It is important to briefly review not only the steel making process and viewpoints regarding methods of refining, but also to describe the tools which were available for research at the time. One must recall that only 15 years before the beginning of this program, the open hearth production exceeded that of the Bessemer in the United States. Many open hearths were still operating on producer gas (a very inefficient fuel), although some plants were converting to the use of natural gas and very few to oil. Continuous rolling of wide strip started this year. The Faraday Society in England held a World Conference on Physical Chemistry in Steel Making in 1925 and the contributions to this work created considerable interest throughout the world and it appeared that physical chemistry might convert the art of steel making into a science. These papers, however, attempted to solve the problems through the use of the older physical chemical concepts such as Nernst's numbers, etc. and considerable data were missing. In 1923, Lewis and Randall had published their book Thermodynanzicsl and this was later to establish and standardize the steps which are now accepted for the calculation of physico-chemical equations. At the time this research work was started, there were no small high frequency induction furnaces. ZINC metallurgists continue to follow with keen interest reports of successful results from the continuous retort plants at Palmerton, Pa., and Meadowbrook. W. Va. The new process had already demonstrated its ability to reduce the lead content of the metal and to effect savings in labor and fuel. The past year has shown that the retorts themselves can he built to last long enough so that the retort cost per ton of metal is lower than in past practice with small horizontal re- torts. A number of the latest type of retorts are reported to have been in continuous operation for over 18 months without a failure and are said to be still in good condition. This seems a complete answer to the last question which remained before continuous zinc smelting could he pronounced commercially practicable.

The classes of ore deposits in the mountain province of Colorado that have been the most productive in the past and that offer the greatest promise for the future are: (1) disseminated or stockwork molybdenum deposits associated with Tertiary stocks; (2) combination precious- and base-metal veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks; and (3) base-metal replacement deposits and veins in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Veins in Precambrian rocks, including precious metal-bearing sulfide veins, gold-silver telluride veins, and tungsten veins, have been mined extensively in the past, but their aggregate output has been far subordinate to that of the groups named above, and the outlook for major output from them in the future is poor. Principal ore deposits of south-central Wyoming are sedimentary iron ores of Precambrian age and uranium deposits in Tertiary sedimentary rocks. Precambrian deposits of several kinds are scattered through the mountains of both states. The most promising of these, based on present indications, are vanadiferous titaniferous magnetite in southern Wyoming and southwestern Colorado and thorium-niobium rare-earth deposits associated with alkalic intrusive complexes in Colorado. Most of the mining districts of Colorado are in the Colorado mineral belt, a generally narrow but somewhat irregular belt that extends northeastward across the north-trending mountain ranges and the north-northwest trending geologic grain of the state. The belt is characterized by intrusive rocks of Laramide and younger age and by ore deposits, and it occupies environments ranging from Precambrian crystalline rocks through Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks to Tertiary volcanic rocks. Two ages of intrusion and ore deposition recently have been recognized in the mineral belt. One is Laramide (late Cretaceous and early Tertiary), and the other is Oligocene. As interpreted herein, the major replacement deposits and most of the sulfide vein deposits in Precambrian and sedimentary rocks are Laramide in age, and the molybdenum deposits, the tungsten and the gold telluride veins in Precambrian rocks, and the precious- and base-metal veins in volcanic rocks are Oligocene in age. In general, the Laramide deposits are mesothermal in aspect, and the Oligocene deposits are principally epithermal. The existence of two mineralization stages, in considerable part characterized by different suites of metals, has many applications in exploration.

WASHINGTON CAMP, in Santa Cruz county, Arizona, is a small and little known mining district situated on the lower, eastern slope of the Patagonia mountains, about 20 miles east of Nogales and a like distance south of Patagonia Station on the Sonora railroad, which connects it Benson, 83 miles from Nogales, with the main line of the Southern Pacific. This district is also about 4 miles north of the international boundary, 35 miles west of Bisbee and 40 miles north of Cananea, in Sonora. The topography of the district, which lies at a general elevation of 5,500 ft. above the sea, is only very moderately rugged, and presents no obstacles to mining operations. Although some of the claims of the camp, including the Pride of the West, Belmont and Holland, were extensively worked for silver 25 years ago, they passed, at moderate depths, as in so many other districts, out of the argentiferous lead carbonate and sulphide into zinc, copper and iron sulphides; and for two decades the camp was abandoned and almost forgotten. In recent years, however, its apparent possi¬bilities as a copper producer have led to a revival of mining activity; but not, as yet, with conspicuous success. Although economically relatively unimportant, the deposits of Washington Camp are, mineralogically and structurally, nevertheless, typical examples of ore-bodies developed in connection with the garnet ledge now recognized as a normal feature of granite-limestone contacts; and, in the opinion of the writer, this is an instance where a minor example is yet essentially normal and capable of throwing important light upon the origin and genetic relations of the type.

THE ancient copper-mines of Lake Superior, having been destroyed or covered by-modern mining-dumps, are not accessible to the present inhabitants of that region, and, since no more are likely to be found, some account of those already discovered, from one who has seen them, may be acceptable to the Institute. Early in May, 1855, 1 took a party of men to open an ancient pit on the Quincy mine-location. Mr. C. C. Douglas was the Agent.," as mine-managers were then called on Lake Superior. The Quincy Co. had previously done work on a fissure-vein, several hundred feet west of the Amygdaloid lode (afterwards called the Pewabic lode), on which was the ancient pit herein described. It was at this pit that the Quincy' main shaft was subsequently stink. The ancient pit showed an apparent depth of about 4 ft., but when cleaned out it was shown to be 14 ft. deep, having been filled up by the sliding-in of material composed largely of broken rock, taken out in sinking the ancient shaft, and left near its mouth. Midway of the shaft, and below water-level, was found a scaffolding, of white-birch poles,- which had been used as a landing, to assist in removing the excavated rock. The shaft was 7 ft. in diameter. The excavation had been done by first building fires in order to disintegrate the rock, as was proved by the abundance of charcoal found; then breaking the softened rock with hammers of diorite, such as is found in the greenstone range on Keweenaw point. These hammers had about. the size of large paving-stones. Only broken ones were found, the whole ones having been doubtless carried away for other work, such as could be traced on the lode for a hundred feet or more to the south. 011, and gas development has continued unabated on the Texas Gulf Coast during 1937. Although the number of important new discoveries has not been great, the extensions in older fields, owing to discovery of new sands and the lateral extension of known sands, has been extensive. Twenty-four new producing fields were added during the year, and many of these areas give promise of developing into important producing districts in the future. Alta Mesa, Amelia, Aransas, Clara Driscoll, Five Corners, Hamman, Heyser, Old Ocean, Premont, Seabreeae, Segno and West Columbia have all had major extensions during 1937. The 1937 production for the Texas Gulf Coast was 120,141,429 bbl., or 32f per cent increase over the 1936 production of 90,865,293 bb1. t The total number of producing wells has increased from 6727 to 8968. Well abandonments have becn few and indications are that they will continue to be so. Rigid proration has been and continues to be in effect, and, as a result, wells in the Gulf Coast will have prolonged life. New Fields Tables 1 and 2 contain general information on all fields in this district. The following named fields were discovered in 1937: Aransas County.—Barnsdall Oil Company's No. 1-A Edwards was the discovery well for the Lamar field. It was drilled to a total depth of 9785 ft., plugged back and completed at 7530 ft. in the Frio as a gas and distillate well. Present indications are not very promising for a major field. Bee County.—The McMurray (Strauch) field was discovered by Dirks Bros. No. 1 Strauch at a total depth of 4577 ft. This is a Yegua producer, and had an initial production of 230 bbl. on a 3/16-in. choke. Brazoria County.—The Sandy Point field was discovered by Henry DeArmanls No. 1 Fite, which was completed as a producer at 6501 ft. in the Marginulina-Frio series. Galveston County.—Although the Hitchcock field was discovered in 1936, the first commercial oil producer was completed in 1937 when

Diamond-drill blasthole sloping has now been used for a long enough time to permit us to discuss fairly its problems from the ore-breaking angle and to attempt to peer into its future. To do this we have gathered information from many properties through questionnaires. The operators have indicated fairly well in their answers what they think of the method. To attempt to look into the future of a mining method immediately brings to light many problems and variables. For instance: why were diamond drills used in the first place? What has the cost trend been? In what type of deposit has the method proved most advantageous? What will the future cost of diamonds be? What are the possible substitutes?
