Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Launching a panel session isn't easy but after Associate Dean Howard Hartman from Pennsylvania State had made his statement, it was obvious that the balloon would go up. Hartman sees a crisis and gave its dimensions. Even with enrollments declining, there are not enough graduates being recruited by the mineral industry. Opportunities in the mining field are not attractive to youth in the face of competition from other disciplines. Nor will we be able to fill our ranks with good men from other engineering disciplines because they won't be attracted either. Salaries are too low. In 1966, mining engineers from Penn State averaged $660 per month starting. The average of all other engineers was $683 per month. The mining engineers ranked seventh out of nine disciplines. The bad image of the mineral field is created in part by industry which offers poor working conditions and inconsequential jobs and in part by the schools which have unimaginative curricula and poor teaching. Hartman called for immediate action and had his own set of solutions ready. "The gut of the problem is pay. Boost starting engineers $100 to $150 a month and older employees in commensurate manner. Compensate for poor working locations by better environment on the job." He did not fail to add that improvement of the public image of the mineral industry is needed. He called for elimination of all of the "schisms," or subdivisions of mineral industry curricula, and suggested a unified curriculum with a name such as "Geo-engineering."

If asked whether limestone production was a mining problem I would not hesitate to answer emphatically in the affirmative. The question, "When is a quarry a mine?" is familiar. The immediate mental picture induced by the thought of limestone production is that of an open quarry. All are familiar with the open pit in the iron-producing districts of Minnesota and Michigan and the open cuts of the so-called "porphyry" coppers of the West. If these are mines, they differ little from limestone quarries in general mode of operation; if quarries, why do they need the attention of mining engineers? During 1923, the United States produced in round numbers 70,000,000 tons of iron ore. The limestone production of the United States for the same period was something over 100,000,000 tons. In tons, it about equals the oil production of the United States. The uses of limestone are legion. A paper read by a prominent engineer of Chicago, at the meeting of the National Crushed Stone Association held last February in St. Louis says: "There is no industry in the United States today that is more basic in its operation or by itself controls more industries. There is hardly a chemical operation, hardly a metallurgical operation or building operation that a crushed-stone man does not control if he will jump in and make the full utilization of it." Some of the many uses are for road metal, concrete, railway ballast, building stone: riprap, and rubble, the manufacture of iron and steel, alkalies, calcium carbide, magnesia, carbolic and carbonic acids, asphalt filler, mineral wool, poultry grit, sulfuric acid, phosphates, nitrates, soap, baking powder, the purification of copper and prevention of coal-mine explosions, to say nothing of the quantities used in the making of lime and cement. It has been said that without iron we would revert to the Stone Age; how much iron would we have without limestone? From the point of view of the mining engineer, using the term in its broad sense to include geologists and metallurgists, the production of limestone is important because of its occurrence, volume, commercial importance, and the problems presented by its recovery and treatment.

In 1034 the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama began an investigation of the availability of kyanite ores as a source of raw material for the manufacture of refractories. Under this program, gravity concentration and flotation tests have been made on two varieties of Georgia kyariite ore, mica schist and massive. Most of the attention has been directed to the mica schist ores, as they are more widely distributed and seem to offer greater economic possibilities than the massive ores. It is evident that the preparation of kyanite for use as a refractory material involves other considerations than the mere elimination of impurities. A concentration process that eliminates impurities satisfactorily may have to be followed by some additional treatment, since the final product must be of a coarseness and size ratio that will make it suitable for refractories manufacture. So far in the investigation at the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines only the concentration problem has been considered, and this paper is intended as an interim report. Ores The schist ores contain 1 to 9 per cent of kyanite crystals embedded in mica and quartz, with smaller amounts of graphite, garnet and iron oxide and minor amounts of other heavy minerals. The garnet content varies from a trace to a few per cent. The minerals are easily released by moderate grinding. The size of the kyanite ranges from fine needles to crystals 1 1/2 in. long, 1/2 in. wide and 1/4 in. thick. The garnet, quartz and iron oxide grains have a smaller mean mesh than most of the kyanite. The maximum size of the garnet crystals corresponds to about 14 mesh and that of the sand grains is considerably less. Most of the iron oxide is still finer, for the minus 100-mesh size is greatly enriched in Fe²O3. The massive ore consists of radiating masses of kyanite interlocked with quartz, mica, corundum and small amounts of other heavy minerals.

Every constructing engineer and designer knows how often it is desirable to provide a speed-adjustment between parts of a machine performing different functions, or between a prime mover and the devices to which it furnishes power, and how bulky and unsatisfactory are most of the methods by which the result is usually accomplished. Of course the step-pulley is the most simple and generally used. It requires, (1) parallelism of shafts; (2) a considerable distance between centers; and (3) a cessation of power during the change from one speed to another. Add to this the necessity for careful design in order to obtain equal belt-tension for all positions; the weight and hulk required for a wide range; and the operative's positive conviction that better results could be obtained at a speed intermediate between those furnished by two successive steps, and we begin to realize the mechanical shortcomings of this old and familiar friend. The hundred and one other devices, patented and otherwise, for accomplishing similar results, present other objections of varying importance, which need not be discussed here. Without pretending to overcome these entirely, and indeed without claiming absolute novelty, a recent invention of Mr. E. F. Gordon, of Dover, N. H., has seemed to the writer to offer such advantages in flexibility and range of application as to merit a more extended study and use than can be given in his own work, to which it is being applied as rapidly as opportunity permits. It is placed before the members of the Institute, not only to bring out an expression of opinion as to its limitations, but also with the hope that it will thus find opportunities for applications hitherto untried and outside the scope of operation of those at present interested in its development. PROF. HENRY Louis, of Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, a distinguished member of this Institute and other technical societies, has recently sent to the Institution of Mining Engineers, and to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, in Great Britain, a communication, the substance of which is as follows Prof. Louis calls attention to the absence of any recognized English term for the definite description of a frequent phenomenon-namely, the oblique position of an ore-body in the plane in which it. lies. In this connection, Prof. Louis says that in America the term " pitch " has been occasionally applied to this relation, and proposes that, in the literature of ore-deposits, it shall be hereafter restricted to this particular meaning, the angle of the pitch, like that of the dip, being always measured from the horizontal, and the dip being always taken at right angles to the strike, while the pitch is taken on the plane of the dip, in the direction of the strike. Thus, for example, in a vein or bed striking N-S., and dipping, say, 45° E., there might be an ore-body, the axis of which pitched northward, at an angle of 45° below the horizontal line, as measured on the plane of the inclosing vein or bed. If the term " pitch " had this universally recognized meaning, the situation could be simply and perfectly expressed by its use, in connection with the general data of strike and clip. As Prof. Louis says ?This suggestion has a certain practical value, and is not merely academic. Every mining engineer of practical experience in such types of ore-deposit will have met with cases, in which a vertical shaft has been sunk with the object of cutting the deposit, but has missed it, because the dip alone has been taken into account, while the pitch has been overlooked." Conclusive evidence is given showing that the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution follows mainly the over-all equation A similar equation can also be written for the dissolution of silver. Theoretical derivation of the velocity equation for this reaction has been obtained, which describes quantitatively the experimental facts. The equation is as follows: where [CN-] and [O2] = the concentrations (in moles/ml) of cyanide and dissolved oxygen, respectively. DcN- and Do2 = the diffusion coefficients of cyanide and dissolved oxygen; 1.83 x 10-5 and 2.76 x 10-5 cm2 sec-1, respectively. A = the surface area of the metal in contact with the aqueous phase, in cm S = the thickness of the boundary layer; varies between 2 and 9 x 10-3 cm, depending on the speed and method of agitation. Rate being expressed in g. equiv. sec-1. INTRODUCTION During recent years a number of papers have been published on the kinetics of dissolution of gold and silver in cyanide solution.1,6 The authors agree that the rate of dissolution is diffusion-controlled, but disagree regarding the mechanism of the reaction. Some authors'-3 support the Bodlander equations: The apparently conflicting results, when critically reviewed, are concordant and lead to the conclusion that the proper equation for the dissolution reaction should be only Eq. 1. This conclusion is based on the following facts: 1) For every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved one mole O2 was consumed. 2) For every 1 equivalent of metal dissolved, 2 moles of cyanide were consumed.' 3) Hydrogen peroxide is formed during the dissolution of gold or silver, and for every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved, one mole H2O2 was produced.1,2 The fact that Kudryk and Kellogg4 did not detect H2O2 during the dissolution of gold should not throw doubt on the many affirmative reports of other investigators. Lund2 has shown that depending on the crystalline nature of the silver surface, (e.g. method of etching the sample) H2O2 may undergo catalytic decomposition heterogeneously according to: Further Kudryk and Kellogg4 carried out their experiments in the presence of 0.5% KC1 to achieve a greater electrolytic conductivity, and Matsudaira7 has shown that H2O2 is catalytically decomposed (homogeneously) in the presence of C1- ion in alkaline solution. 4) Experiments carried out by Boonstra8 and Lund2 showed that the dissolution of gold and silver respectively in KCN + H2O2 in the absence of oxygen was a slow process. Thus the reaction takes place to a minor extent only. Further kinetic studies showed that: 1) The rate of dissolution depends on the surface area of the metal in contact with the liquid phase, thus indicating that the process of dissolution is a heterogeneous process. 2) The rate of dissolution depends on the speed of stirring,5,6 thus indicating that the process is controlled by a physical phenomenon.

DEFORMATION of cold-rolled fcc metals and alloys produces one or the other of two types of rolling textures, usually referred to as the copper type or the brass type. The pure fcc metals, with the exception of silver, develop the copper-type texture when rolled at room temperature. Silver, brass, and many other alloys develop the brass-type texture. Transition from one texture type to another can also occur. Solute additions to pure copper cause a transition from the copper-type to the brass-type texture.' Varying the deformation temperature also produces texture transitions. Copper rolled at -196°C developed the brass-type texture2 and silver rolled at elevated temperatures, 200°C, developed the copper-type texture.374 The work of Haessner,' Smallman and Green,6 and Hu and coworkers3'4 seems to have established an apparent correlation between the type of rolling texture (and the texture transition) and the stacking-fault probability. Thus materials with low stacking-fault energies are thought to develop the brass-type texture while high stacking-fault energy materials develop the copper-type texture. Mikkola and cohen7 measured by X-ray diffraction techniques the stacking-fault probability, a, in the ordered and disordered fcc alloy Cu3Au. Unexpectedly, ordered specimens showed about twice the stacking-fault probability as the disordered ones. Marcinkowski and Zwe118 also found stacking faults in ordered Cu,Au, but not in the disordered CusAu. More recently, Camanzi and coworkers9 have shown that the intrinsic stacking-fault energy of Cu3Au undergoes a considerable decrease (approximately 100 ergs per sq cm) when passing from the disordered to the ordered phase. In general, deformation reduces order'' but some of our measurements showed that some long-range order still remains in Cu3Au after cold reduction by rolling 80 pct. From the above considerations Cu3Au offers the possibility of studying the texture transition in fcc alloys without varying either the temperature or the composition. If the stacking-fault energy correlation is correct, an initially ordered alloy should develop the brass-type texture during rolling while a disordered alloy should develop the copper-type texture. The present communication describes some initial results of experiments designed to investigate this possibility. The rolling textures of ordered and disordered Cu3Au samples were determined after various amounts of deformation. The ordered sample had an initial long-range-order parameter of S = 1, determined from X-ray diffraction. The grain size of both the ordered and disordered samples was the same, and the initial textures of both were also identical and approximately random. No obvious differences in the deformation textures of the ordered and disordered materials were detected up to 35 pct reduction and the (111) pole figures of Fig. 1 resemble that of pure copper. However, with reduction larger than 35 pct and less than 50 pct, a marked deviation from the copper texture was noted in the ordered material. An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. The revised program-written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State's Computation Center-is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following: 1) Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all airways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2) Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3) Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values. The basis of analysis used is the Hardy Cross method of successive approximation for solution of any fluid network, explained in detail in the earlier article. In brief, corrections to assumed air flows are computed for all the loops of a network; following distribution to the airways of each loop, the process is repeated until acceptable accuracy is attained. When a hand or desk-calculator solution is used, there is advantage to close approximation of the actual flows in the original assumption of air-flow distribution in the network. Since publication of the previous paper, in which assumption of initial quantities was also necessary in the computer solution, the program has been modified to make the first distribution itself, assigning the total quantity to one specified path in a split and then proceeding to correct the flows. The number of iterations required for a high-accuracy solution is little affected, at least in networks of few loops, 10 to 15 being sufficient to reduce the error to 1 pct or less. The principal limitation of the original program was that it contained no provision for handling a fan. Further, it did not determine the overall head loss in the network and was not designed for multiple parallel openings, such as occur in coal mines. The revised program was written to overcome these disadvantages and also to print out the adjusted flows for all airways, corrected for the system operating point. At the present time, the program can handle only an external fan. The procedure employed in solving a ventilation network is now as follows: 1) Input data consisting of airway characteristics and loop designation along with assumed direction of flow, for each branch of the network and any trunk airways, are fed into the computer. 2) Employing the resistance relationship, where R is resistance, K is friction factor, P is perimeter, L is length, A is area, and n is number of airways (where multiple intakes and returns are employed); values are computed for all airways. 3) An arbitrary, continuous route of flow through the circuit—from beginning to end—is selected and the path identified by airway numbers and read in. 4) Based on a total assumed quantity of flow Q (usually 100,000 cfm.) the computer employs the procedure described in the previous article in distributing quantities of flow among all the airways until a satisfactory level of accuracy has been attained (in the current program, the machine is turned off when the cumulative corrective error in cfm, is reduced to five times the number of airways). 5) Airway head losses H are calculated by the relation H = R Q2 and cumulated along the original designated flow route to find the overall head loss for the network. Trunk airways are then included to obtain the mine head.

It is difficult to see how such a conclusion can be reached except by extrapolation from test data,. and such extrapolation always gives results of questionable value. A Knudsen effusion tnethod I~as been used lo measure the vapor pressure of pure iron in the temperature range 1000° to 1500°C. Neutron-irradiated , natural iron was used and the Mn'~proclzdced by the (n, p) reaction removed by evaporation at high temperature. The results can be represented by the equation: where pM - 1.088 x 107 atm and T, = 20,890°K. A value of 100.2 kcal per g- atom was obtained for AH;. THE vapor pressure of pure iron in the temperature range 1000" to 1500°C has been measured. Radioactive iron and a Knudsen cell technique were used and the Mn' produced by an (n, p) reaction removed by evaporation at high temperature. From the variation of vapor pressure with temperature values of the enthalpy and entropy of solid iron have been found. Previous workers2 used a Lang-muir method and measurements were made over a smaller temperature range than that in this work. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus used was similar to that of Pyle and Shuttleworth, and McLellan and Shuttle worth. However, because of the higher temperatures the Knudsen cell was machined from tungsten bar and the flanged furnace tube was beryllia. Heating was by passing a high current (70 amp at 7 v for 1500°K) through a strip of tantalum foil laid across the top of the cell and through a turn of molybdenum wire around the furnace tube. This method of heating ensured that the top of the cell was slightly hotter than the base and prevented condensation and re-evaporation from the orifice. The temperature was measured by means of a pt/Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple spot-welded to the base of the crucible. To ensure accurate temperature measurement the iron was in the form of a thin disc (0.75 cm diam by 0.075 cm) which lay on the base of the cell. The high-purity iron was irradiated in the Harwell pile for a week at a neutron flux of 1.2 X 10" neutrons per sq cm per sec. The isotopes fe'~ and Fe" are produced by (n! y) reactions but only Fe", half-life 45.1 days, is a emitter; Mn which is also a y emitter, half-life 300 days, is produced simultaneously by an (n,p) reaction.' Immediately after irradiation of natural iron the ratio of ~e" to Mn y activity was 100:l. However, manganese is very much more volatile than iron and almost all the y activity of the condensate is due to Mn'~. Thus it was essential to eliminate all the manganeses before any measurement of the vapor pressure of iron was made and this was done by preliminary heating for 20 hr at 1400°C. For each determination the iron was dissolved from the target with acid and the y activity compared to a known weight of iron. By means of a y-ray spectrometer the y-activity measurements were made at the 1.09-mev peak of the 17e5' spectrum where the background was of the order of 3 cpm. Despite the low specific activity of ~e" a mass of 10- " g of iron could be determined corresponding to a vapor pressure of about l0-'' atm. FOREWORD-Back in October of last year, I approached three of the largest commercial banks in the country to solicit an article about the role of commercial banks in mine financing. "We'll be delighted to cooperate with you in any way we can," was the stock response. Any commercial banker will be truly delighted in talking with you, if you have a good mining prospect, a good reputation, a good batting average in your business-and if he has the capital you want to borrow. But what happens when banks themselves are illiquid? Much as they would like to help you, they simply can't. And most of them clam up.

The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. THE award from the fund established by Mrs. John-son, in memory of her husband, J. E. Johnson, Jr., to be given to some promising engineer, not over 40 years of age, because of meritorious research, inven-tion or contribution to the professional literature of iron and steel along the lines of blast-furnace process, has been given, for, 1928, to P. H: Royster. Mr. Royster was born at Raleigh, N. C., in 1888. and graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1907, taking his A.M. degree at, the same school in 1908. He then went to Harvard where he continued research work in physics. After engaging for a while in commercial research in the turbine department of the General Elec-tric Co. and with Cutting and Washington he joined the staff of the Bureau of. Mines in 1916 and was assigned to work on the physical chemistry of the blast-furnace process. He worked with A. L. Feild on slag viscosity and they jointly presented-to the Institute the. papers on "Temperature and Viscosity Relations in the Ter-nary System CaO-A12O3-SiO2" (TRANS. LVIII, 658) and "Slag Viscosity Tables for Blast-furnace Work" (TRANS. LVIII, 650). He also presented a paper on "Production of Ferromanganese in the Blast 'Furnace" .(TRANS. LXII, 18), and jointly with T. L. Joseph contributed a paper on "Effect of Coke Combustibility on Stock Descent in Blast Furnaces" (TRANS. LXX, 236), and another on "Pyrometry in Blast-furnace Work" which was included in the special pyrometry volume published in 1920. The titles of these works perhaps sufficiently indicate the part Mr. Royster has played in the notable research work on the blast-furnace process carried on by the Bureau of Mines, and for which the committee recommended him to the Board of Directors to receive the Johnson award.

[THE conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may of be able to adopt the practice of larger mines because of necessary capital expendites for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has n yet been developed. CONVENTIONAL DRILL BIT IN USE That drilling speed increases as the hit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests married out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. show that when bit sizes are reduced from. 1 ½ in. 1 3/8 in., and 1 3/16 in., to 1 3/8 in., 1¼ in., and it' in., respectively, the volume of the hole is15 per cent less and the drilling speed 4q per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to 1.826 in., a difference of 0.251 in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr characteristics) by some mines.4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and I4° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as can be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier papers.5,6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert.7 REQUIREMENTS FOR DETACHABLE BIT FOR HOLLINGER Under these circumstances, it was apparent that it would be difficult to introduce a detachable bit that could successfully compete with the conventional bit already in]
