The development of the relatively deeper fields discovered during 1937 helped build the 1938 production to 18,456,760 bbl., an increase of 6,295,910 bbl., or 51.6 per cent over 1937, and the largest production for south Arkansas since 1930. Schuler and Rodessa accounted for the increased production as well as for over half of the wells drilled in the state. There were 243 holes drilled during 1938, of which 200 were completed as oil or gas wells. Of the 29 wildcat wells completed, 25 were dry, 3 found oil in the Smack-over limestone, while 1 made a small oil well in the Nacatoch sand. This was less than half the number of wildcats drilled the previous year, but nearly twice as many field wells were drilled. The old depth record of 7973 ft. was exceeded twice during the year, with the present record of 8332 feet. Trend of Prospecting The porous "Reynolds" oolite of the Smackover limestone1 has been the object of most of the wildcat prospecting during the past two years. Seismograph work, which brought 22 crews into this area during 1938, was largely pointed toward a study of the structure of this limestone formation. Thirteen dry wildcats have been drilled to this formation and five pools have been opened in it since it was first found to be productive at Snow Hill in the spring of 1936. With the failure of "updip" prospects to produce, activity moved southward and basinward. Success in five instances in Columbia and south Union Counties has spurred activity in this area. Much of the acreage is under lease and half a dozen deep limestone tests are assured for the current year. Fig. 1 shows the location of the principal oil fields in south Arkansas, as well as one or two minor producing areas. The fields are numbered in the order of their discovery. ROBERT WOOLSTON HUNT, who joined the Institute in 1874, served twice as its President, was made Honorary member in 1919, in whose honor the Hunt prize and medal were established, and who, within a month, had received the Washington Award, died at his home in Chicago on July 11, 1923. Robert Woolston Hunt was born Dec. 9, 1838, in Fallsington, Buck County, Pa., His father, Dr. Robert A. Hunt, of Trenton, N. J., graduated from Princeton College in the class of 1824, and later from the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania. His mother was Martha Lancaster Woolston. Mr. Hunt spent several years learning the practical side of iron making in the roll-ing mills of John Burnish & Co. at Pottsville, Pa. Later he took a course in analytical chemistry in the laboratory of Booth, Gar-rett & Blair, upon the completion of which he entered the employ of the Cambria Iron Co. at Johns-town, and for them, on Aug. 1, 1860, established the first laboratory in Amer-ica forming an integral part of an iron or steel organization. In the fall of 1861 he en-tered the United States military service, and was in command of Camp Curtin at Harrisburg, serving as mustering officer for the State of Pennsylvania, with the rank of Captain. In 1864 he assisted in recruiting Lambert's Independent Mounted Company, and was mustered into active ser-vice as a sergeant, having tossed up with a friend who had also participated in recruiting the company, as to which one should receive a Lieutenant's commission. Upon being mustered out of service, Mr. Hunt returned to the employ of the Cambria Iron Co. which sent him to the works at Wyandotte, Mich., where experiments with the new Bessemer process of making steel were being conducted. He was placed in charge of those works in July, 1865, and so continued until May, 1866, when the Cambria company called him back to Johnstown to take charge of their steel business, intending at once to begin the erection of a Bessemer steel plant. The plant, however, was not built for several years, and in the meantime the Cambria company began the rolling of steel rails for the Pennsylvania Railroad, using ingots of Bessemer steel produced by the Pennsylvania Steel Co. at their Steelton works. Mr. Hunt had charge of the steel for these operations; and in August, 1867, the first steel rails made in America on a commercial order were rolled.

APPARATUS described in this paper uses the properties of X-radiation, emitted by substances under electron bombardment, as a means of rapid chemical point analysis. The method is based upon the principles of emission X-ray spectrography pioneered by Moseley in 1913. A very finely focused beam of electrons—the electron probe—is projected on the surface of a sample, which has a very large area compared with the beam diameter, at the point where it is desired to know the chemical composition. The minute volume of the sample which is thus irradiated emits a complex X-ray spectrum consisting principally of the characteristic radiations of the elements present in the volume. Measurement of the wavelength and intensity of each component of this spectrum thus affords a simple method of determining the chemical identity and concentration of these elements. The volume of sample which is analyzed at each position of the beam is limited by the diffusion of electrons in the sample. For an accelerating potential of the electron beam of about 30 kv, which is a convenient value for producing the characteristic radiation, this diffusion extends over a diameter of about 1 µ normal to the beam, and about 2 µ in the direction of the beam. Thus a beam of 1 µ in diameter leads to a volume of about 2 µ in diameter being irradiated. The limits of the analyzed region are thus considerably smaller than those obtained by using spark or arc emission spectrometry, which must extend to about 50 µ at right angles to the beam, and those obtained in X-ray fluorescence analysis, where the penetration of the specimen is considerably greater. The apparatus itself consists of three main parts: an electron optical system. an X-ray spectrograph and an optical microscope. The electron opticai system consists of a tungsten cathode emitting the electrow and a pair of magnetic lenses which focus the electron beam on the specimen to be analyzed. The specimen is prepared in the usual way, as in optical micrography. The X-radiation, emitted at the focal spot where the electrons strike the sample, is analyzed with a curved crystal, Geiger-Müller counter, vacuum spectrograph. The light microscope, designed to observe the surface of the sample in the region to be analyzed, is provided with a reflecting objective placed on the axis of the second magnetic lens. Its magnification is X450. The quantitative determination of an element A in the analyzed region is made by measuring the intensity I, of a strong characteristic line of the element, as emitted from the sample, and then the intensity I (A) of this same line as emitted from a

Rubber-tired shuttle cars are finding increased use as gathering units in under-ground mines. As the name implies, they shuttle back and forth between the loading machine and the section transportation system. In many mines their use has in-creased the efficiency of the loading and gathering operations, resulting in increased output per man employed and decreased costs per ton. A car motivated by cable reel is shown in Fig I, and a car with battery power in Fig 2. A brief chronological account of the development of rubber-tired haulage equip-ment follows: 1936. J. H. Fletcher1 installed his first unit for the Blue Bird Coal Co., Carrier Mills, Illinois. This unit consisted of a battery-powered industrial tractor and a trailer with drop-bottom doors. The coal was transported for short distances to a hopper for discharge into mine cars. 1938. A battery-powered self-contained shut-tle car with rubber-tired wheels was built by the Joy Manufacturing Co. Two units were installed for the Katherine Coal Co., Lumberport, West Virginia. The shuttle car consisted of a materials-receiving body with a conveyor in the bottom to move the coal forward during loading and to unload the coal at the discharge station. 1938. A cable-powered shuttle car with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer was developed by A. L. Lee. Special wheels mounted on king pins on the car permitted all four wheels to be steered. The cable reel was driven by a torque motor to give the cable proper tension during the payout and uniform tension when rewound on the reel. 1940. A Joy shuttle car equipped with trolley poles and a cable reel was developed to operate on a double trolley-wire system.2 This unit was installed at a potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemicals Corporation at Carlsbad, New Mexico. It is believed to have been the first installation of its kind, and the first of shuttle cars for handling material other than coal. 1941. Truck haulage3 was introduced in the Tri State District by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company. Storage battery electric trucks were rebuilt to handle a bottom-dump trailer. 1941—Joy shuttle cars were installed in a mine of the United States Gypsum Company, Oakfield, New York. 1943—Joy shuttle cars were installed in several bauxite mines.4,5 1945—Joy shuttle cars installed in a lime-stone mine. Because of the nature of bituminous coal beds trackless equipment has had its greatest application in bituminous coal mining. Usually a shuttle car is filled by a continuous type of loader. Measurements have been made of the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of two specimens of 0.005-cm (2-mil) Be-Cufoil over the temperature range -140° to +200°C. The thermal cmductivity of Be-Cu Alloy 125 was found to be significantly higher than that of Alloy 25, which had a higher impurity content. The thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity values obtained were in concordance with the Smith and Palmer relation for copper alloys which states that ? = 0.0239 (T/p) + 0.075 where A is thermal conductivity (W cm-' deg-'), p is electrical resistivity (microhm-cm), and T is absolute temperature (OK) , indicating that the Smith and Palmer relation can be used to predict the thermal conductivity of this type of Be-Cu alloy over the temperature range -140" to + 200°C to within an accuracy suitable for most engineering applications. THE National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., requested the National Bureau of Standards to measure the thermal conductivity of 0.005-cm Be-Cu foil which was to be used to fabricate antennae for use in Radio Astronomy Explorer space craft. It was felt that measurements had to be made on the actual antenna material, rather than on a thick bar of similar material, since the cold-working and age-hardening properties of the alloy would make it very difficult, if not impossible, to place a thick bar in the same metallurgical state as the 0.005-cm material. As discussed in Section 111 of this paper, the thermal conductivity of many copper alloys can be computed rather accurately from electrical resistivity data using an empirical relation developed by Smith and palmer' and further confirmed by owell.' However, there has been very little work done on correlating thermal and electrical conductivities on Be-Cu alloys. We were reluctant to assume the validity of the Smith-Palmer relation on Be-Cu alloys because of the very large mass difference between beryllium and copper. As will be seen, however, our experimental results indicate that the Smith-Palmer relation is valid for the two alloys on which we made measurements. I) DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Samples of Be-Cu Alloy 25 and Be-Cu Alloy 125 were furnished to NBS in the form of rolled strip material, 0.005 cm thick by 5.08 cm wide. The Be-Cu Alloy 25 was purchased by NBS in the form of a continuous length of flat strip. The Be-Cu Alloy 125 was furnished to NBS by Goddard Space Flight Center in the form of two lengths of strip that had been formed into "tubing" of about 1.2 cm diam, with one side of the strip overlapping (but not connected to) the other side by about 90 deg. This "tubing" had been opened up to be flat and then rolled onto spools of about 3 cm diam. When unrolled, the strip would spring back into tubular form. Samples of both of the Be-Cu alloys were chemically analyzed by the NBS Analytical Chemistry Division. The beryllium content was determined quantitatively by the phosphate-gravimetric method to be 1.83 wt pct for Alloy 25 and 1.80 wt pct for Alloy 125. The two alloys were also examined by a general qualitative spectrochemical method for metallic elements. The Alloy 25 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 wt pct Al, Co, Fe, and Si and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Ni. The Alloy 125 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Co and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Al, Fe, and Si. Other metallic elements present were in amounts less than 0.01 pct. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section measured the tensile strength, elongation, and Knoop hardness of both the Be-Cu Alloy 25 and the Be-Cu Alloy 125. These are given in Table I. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section also prepared photomicrographs of the two alloys; these are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Although Australia is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, the last few years have not been easy for companies in Western Australia's Pilbara region (see map) where more than 90% of the nation's iron ore is produced. For at least two years, the industry has been plagued by dwindling markets abroad, production-crippling strikes at home, skyrocketing costs (well above the official 13% annual inflation rate), an acute shortage of investment capital, increasingly ferocious competition from foreign iron ore producers-and, as if all this weren't enough, by an over-valued currency that has caused incalculable damage not only to iron ore producers but to the entire mining industry of Australia. (This last problem was mitigated less than two months ago, on November 28, 1976, when the Australian dollar was devalued by a whopping 17 1/2%.)

The total footage drilled was 23,83134 ft., of which 12,802 1/2 ft. was by cable tools and 11,029 by rotary. Four of the dry holes were drilled into Mississippian or older beds.

AN investigation has been made of the multiplying factors for some of the more common alloying and deoxidizing elements for use in calculating hardenability of steel according to Grossmann's method.1 The factors for manganese, silicon, and aluminum that were reported in an earlier communication2 have been confirmed by microscopic determination of the half-martensite structure rather than on the basis of an empirically determined hardness corresponding to a half-martensite structure. Measurement of ideal critical diameter by microscopic examination was found to he necessary for other alloying elements, and multiplying factors for nickel, chromium, molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, titanium, and boron have been determined. The nature and order of magnitude of the multiplying factors reflect the effect of the alloying elements on the structural character of the steel. Except for nickel and vanadium, the multiplying factors agree fairly well with previously published results. Good correlation between actual and calculated ideal critical diameters has been found in developing the multiplying factors and in checking the results against fairly simple steels. However, some discrepancies have suggested the need for a more thorough study of low-carbon and complex steels. TESTING PROCEDURE The investigation was conducted principally on steels made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. However, a few open-hearth steels were used in establishing the effect of nickel, and the hardenability factor for boron was based primarily on open-hearth steels. All bars were normalized prior to the machining of Jominy hardenability specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under conditions standard for the test.3 Austenitizing temperatures judged to-be-appropriate for the composi¬tions of the steels were used., Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Residual amounts of phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper were determined on only one heat of each group made with the same materials during the same period. "Acid-soluble" aluminum and zirconium rather than total amounts were determined, as it is considered probable that the acid-soluble amount is more representative of the effective alloy. As tin was present to the extent of only 0.002 per cent, its effect was neglected. The method used to determine boron in the steels shown in Table 9* was developed by Galen Porter, Vincent Napoleon, and Thomas R. DURING the last several years the authors have been conducting tests on a tensile machine that autographically records load-elongation data. In certain tests at elevated temperatures on face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic materials (binary alloys of nickel, zirconium, and iron), the load-elongation curve as shown in Fig. 1 reaches a maximum load (Pmax,) at relatively small amounts of strain and a large amount of elongation occurs subsequently with a continuously decreasing load, until finally localized necking and fracture take place. This early maximum load behavior has been found without the accompanying evidence of localized necking as has been assumed by some, or of evidence of cracking as observed by others.' This behavior has also been observed by Nadai and Manjoinez whose results are in good agreement with ours. The prior strain, strain rate, test temperature, and crystal structure affect the observations. The influence of prior strain was observed in tests on unalloyed zirconium at 300°C in which specimens containing large amounts of prior strain (cold work) exhibited the type of curve shown in Fig. 1. No localized necking was observed after strain as much as that of point B. Annealed and recrystallized specimens of the same material showed a load-elongation curve with maximum load occurring after considerable strain hardening and at the beginning of localized necking. Interrupted tests (Fig. 2) show no loss in strength because of recovery or recrys-tallization during an interval at temperature without load. Recovery under stress such as found by Wood and Suiter3 in aluminum is now being investigated as one possible explanation. The strain rate is a contributing variable as shown in Fig. 3, a test on high purity nickel. Here the strain rate was decreased by a factor of ten during a test in which the maximum load was reached at a small strain. The slope of the true stress-true strain curve was positive with the more rapid strain rate and negative with the slower strain rate. In many binary ferrites an added effect of temperature has been observed. Fig. 4 shows the load-elongation plots for a binary ferritic alloy containing 2 pct Mo. There are probably as many variations of the method for blowing-in blast-furnaces as there are furnace superintendents. That some of these variations are poor practice is shown by the troublesome and sometimes disastrous experiences of many furnace-men, even within the last few years. It is the object of this paper to put on record a blowing-in practice that has gradually developed to the point where the results are sure, safe, and satisfactory; and also to bring into discussion several variations that are questionable. The blowing-in of a modern blast-furnace is one of the greatest of metallurgical operations. On its degree of success depends much of the future life of the lining and the subsequent behavior of the furnace; and it involves possibilities of danger to the men engaged in the work. The objects to be attained are the heating of the interior of the furnace to the high temperature necessary for smelting iron; the starting of the smelting process; and the gradual movement of the stock in its downward course. The most critical points are the placing of the kindling-wood, the " bringing down " of the gas, the closing of the iron-notch, and the first cast. The lighting of the first gas, the opening of the cinder-notch for the first flush, and the running of the first cast are anxious times for the superintendent and the furnace-men. Drying-Out the Furnace. As soon as a furnace-lining is completed it should be thoroughly dried out, whether it is to be blown-in soon or not; and the longer it is dried, the better for the furnace. At least two weeks is desirable; but good results can be had with 10 days of firing. Secondary hardening in tempering has long been recognized as a typical characteristic of steels containing large amounts of carbide-forming alloys. These steels, when quenched and tempered, tend to soften somewhat after tempering at low temperatures, and to reharden at intermediate tempering temperatures before finally softening to low hardness. This behavior in tempering has been studied by many investigators, chiefly with respect to thc secondary hardening of high-speed steels. The initial softening has usually been ascribed to decomposition of martensite and growth of iron carbide particles. The secondary hardening has been explained by formation of fresh martensite from residual austenite, formation of very fine alloy carbide particles and by precipitation hardening of metallic compounds in the ferritic matrix. However, factors derived for the calculation of tempered hardness in low-alloy steels1 indicated only a tendency toward retarded softening rather than a discontinuous rehardening. A study was, therefore, made to determine whether fresh martensite from residual austenite and precipitation hardening are essential to rehardening and the degree to which tempered martensite could be rehardened by precipitation of alloy carbides. The mechanism of carbide rehardening was also investigated to determine the nature of the process. The causes of secondary hardening in high-speed steel have received serious consideration for about thirty years. Among the earlier workers Bain and Jeffries2 in 1923 recognized residual austenite as a significant factor, but in addition, emphasized the effect of the formation of alloy carbide particles of "critical" size. They conceived that freshly quenched martensite forms low-alloy iron carbide at low tempering temperatures; with further tempering the iron carbide is then modified by alloying elements that can diffuse most readily at intermediate temperatures (850°F); and that the iron carbides grow in size by coalescence so that the steel tends to lose hardness. At higher tempering temperatures carbide stability rather than alloy availability becomes the controlling influence and in high-speed steel "iron-tungsten carbide is the most stable one and forms to the elimination of the earlier formed carbides. . . . The iron-tungsten carbide particles reach approximately the size for critical dispersion after a short reheat at II00 F." This concept, the formation of alloy carbide nuclei, redissolving of the iron carbide, and diffusion of carbon to the alloy carbide, was restated for vanadium steel in 1932 by Houdremont, Bennek, and Schrader. Subsequent studies have confirmed that iron carbide changes to alloy carbide at 1000 to IIOOOF, but the mechanism of the process has received little consideration.

This DaoerAA calls to attention for the first time, to the writer's knowledge, a purported recovery of oil by substantially horizontal gas cycling that is considerably in excess of 50 per cent of the oil originally in place. The average angle of dip along the path of travel of the gas is less than one degree of arc. The best recovery by gas cycling previously brought to the writer's attention1 occurred in the case of the Mile Six Field in Peru, where about 68 per cent of the original oil in place has so far been recovered. In this case, however. the recovery was greatly aided 1)y the high dip angle of about 17.5". An approximate estimate of recovery was made by the method developed by the writer' for the case of the Cook Ranch Field, using an average relative permeability ratio function dictated by past experience with a number of good quality sandstones. A result of about 40 per cent recovery of the original oil in place wa* obtained after the 8.5 pore volumes of cumulative gas cycling undergone by the Cook Ranch Field. Tile writer desires to emphasize what appears to him as the sound engineering practiced at Cook Ranch, and also the care attending the taking of data and the high quality of the calculations made. It is impossible to take issue on factual grounds with any of the conclusions drawn in the paper. It is, however, desired to point out the difficulty of explaining the unexpectedly favorable oil recovery on ordinary theoretical grounds. It would be of interest to know whether relative permeability ratios have been measured on the Cook sand. The operator is inclined to attribute some of the excess benefit to settling of the oil across the bedding planes into the lower part of the sand. It is difficult for the writer to appreciate the importance of such an effect, inasmuch as the concomitant opening of excessive vacated pore space in the upper part of the sand would he expected to cause excessive bypassing of the gas. There can be no argument that even with the most favorable assumptions of K,/K,, and with cumulative gas cycling in excess of normal expectations, the calculated oil recovery will be considerably less than the 72.5 per cent recovery realized from this project to Jan. 1, 1951. There probably are at least two reasons for the unusually high recovery from this reservoir, the effects of which would be difficult or impossible to calculate by known methods: 1. The operator did not use the same injection wells for the entire operation, and exercised considerable control over producing GOR by changing the locations of injection wells whenever well performance indicated excessive bypassing. Fifty-six wells were used for injection, not over 29 of which were in use simultaneously. This procedure resulted in frequent shifting of the fluid movement patterns in the reservoir and undoubtedly increased the ultimate recovery. The writer knows of no satisfactory procedure for calculating the effect of this practice. 2. Vertical movement of oil across the bedding planes of the reservoir rock hy gravity drainage tended to maintain a relatively high oil saturation, and hence a favorable K,/K, ratio, in the lower sections of the reservoir. As pointed out by Welge, this condition has aggravated the tendency for high producing GOR, but at the same time it has resulted in increased oil recovery. As may be seen from the performance charts for the various battery areas, operating (GOR'S have been quite high for the last several years of reported history.

THE small agricultural village of Santa Barbara, in the State of Guanajuato, has been the center of spasmodic tin-mining operations during recent years. The deposits, so far as I know, are unique, and a few brief notes may be of interest. Santa Barbara, about 12 miles west of San Felipe station on the Mexican National Railway, and at an elevation of 2,400 m. above sea-level, is situated in a flat valley extending east and west, and bounded north and south by broken rugged bills rising about 330 m. above the general level of the valley. Tin-mining operations have been conducted-at the Queensland mine, near this village. A small concentrating-mill was erected and attempts were made to smelt the ore in reverberatory furnaces. The country-rock of the district for many miles is rhyolite of great thickness. There are some local variations due to differences in cooling, or subsequent alteration or impregnation; but throughout the whole district the principal constituents of the rocks remain the same, viz., free silica, orthoclase-feldspar and sanidine. The latter is especially marled. The crevice and joints of the rock are frequently filled with calcedonic and opalescent quartz. The ore-formation at the Queensland mine is of an unusual nature, consisting of cracks in the rhyolite which have been filled with clay. This phenomenon is largely developed over a width of from 80 to 100 m., in which the principal fissuring follows an approximate direction of north and south. The av¬erage clip ranges between 70 to 80 degrees. Some of the fissures bold sufficiently true for a time to afford the impression that they are clue to dynamic causes, or earth-movement. Numerous results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,' formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of structures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of transmission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction,

In an earlier study at this laboratory,' the authors investigated the solid solubility of holmium in copper, silver, and gold, and also the melting point of the first eutectic on the noble-metal-rich side in these systems. In a more recent study of the solubility of rare-earth metals in gold at this laboratory. Rider, Gschneidner, and McMasters2 noted that the reported eutectic temperature in the Ho-Au system was lower than the corresponding eutectics in systems of dysprosium and erbium with gold. A redetermination of the eutectic temperature in the Ho-Au system with the same alloy used in the original study showed the eutectic temperature to be 810°C instead of 778°C as originally reported. (The eutectic temperatures in the Ho-Ag and Ho-Cu systems were also redetermined and were found to be 795" and 864°C compared to 787° and 868°C, respectively, which were reported originally.) Since this large change in eutectic temperature made the solubility data appear questionable, new alloys were prepared, heat-treated, and examined metallographically. The procedure of sample preparation and heat treatment used in the original work' was followed except longer heat treatments were used ranging from 7 days at 600°C to 6 hr at 900°C. The results obtained are shown in Fig. 1. There is good agreement between the two studies in the maximum solubility of holmium in gold. Since the slope of the solvus is less pronounced in the present study, the extrapolation to 550°C shows a solubility of 1.6 wt pct Ho in gold compared with 1.0 wt pct in the original work. Since additional data were obtained and longer heat treatments were used in the present study, the larger value is believed to be more accurate. The authors wish to express their appreciation to P. By confining the electrolytic reduction of TiCl4 to the interior of a porous basket-cathode the electrolyte between the anode and the cathode can be kept free of reduced chlorides of titanium eliminating undesirable reactions of reduced titanium chlorides with brickwork or oxygen in the cell atmosphere. Semiwalls are not needed. Operating conditions are given and discussed. Titanium yields based on TiCl4 introduced are 93 pct. Cell voltage and amperage characteristics are adaptable to multiple cathode-series cell urmngements. EXPERIMENTS conducted in the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, Research Laboratories showed that titanium metal could be deposited in an electrolytic cell in which titanium tetrachloride was introduced through a tubular cathode.' The reduced chlorides as formed were confined to the vicinity of the cathode. They were reduced to form a cocoon-shaped growth of sponge titanium metal at the end of the cathodic tube below the surface of a sodium chloride-strontium chloride electrolyte. No diaphragm was needed.' Although high-purity, coarse crystalline metal was produced in the cocoon growth, the yields of metal removed from the cell, based on the amount of titanium introduced as TiCl4, were usually only 40 to 60 pct. The growth of the cocoon deposits was away from the cathodic tube for introduction of TiC14 toward the anode following the flu lines. The reduced chlorides of titanium diffused through the deposit and were reduced to titanium electrolytically within the deposit or on the outer surfaces. Deposition within the pores of the cocoon was detrimental to further deposition because it plugged the passages used by the reduced chlorides to diffuse away from the point of titanium introduction. As plugging due to deposition in the pores proceeded, the reduced chlorides in the center of the cocoon would force their way out by forming a channel and would escape from the vicinity of the cathode without being reduced to metal. Some work had been done previously1, 2 which indicated that if the end of the cathodic tube for introducing TiC14 was surrounded by a screen connected to the tube so that it too was cathodic, growth could be made to occur within the screen. Direction of growth was observed to be from the screen toward the point of TiCl4 introduction. Through a series of design modifications a cathode evolved which consisted of an introduction tube surrounded by a perforated metal basket as shown in Fig. 1. Modifications of this design are described in Refs. 3, 4, and 5. This basic cathode designa" was incorporated in electrolytic cells containing graphite anodes and constructed of high-silica brick refractory for containing the electrolyte (see Fig. 2). The inner crucible was surrounded by insulating brick and the entire unit contained in a welded steel shell. Suitable cooling chambers with inert gas atmospheres were devised so that the cathode could be removed from the cell without exposing the deposit to air while hot. Various alkali and alkaline earth chlorides were used as electrolytes.

THE function of a pyrometer protecting tube is to maintain an atmosphere about the thermocouple most favorable to its continued accuracy and long life, and at the same time permit the weld of the couple to attain the full temperature of the area or object being measured. In addition to protecting the thermocouple from the chemical or alloying effects of the products of combustion or bath being measured, the tube must also protect the couple from mechanical injury. The conditions met in practice vary so much that no one material is suitable for all applications. The usefulness as well as the expense of maintenance of a pyrometer system are influenced greatly by a choice of the most suitable protecting tube. The tube must protect the couple without itself becoming too great an expense item. The protecting tube should have the following qualities: (1) A melting point well above the highest temperature to be encountered. (2) Sufficient strength through the entire range of temperatures to hold up its own weight and resist such shock and jar as are unavoidable. (3) It must be impervious to the atmosphere or bath to which it will be subject. (4) It must not give off any vapor injurious to the couple. (5) It must not form any oxides fusible below the highest temperature to be measured. The proper location of the tube in the furnace is almost as important as the choice of material. The tube must be placed as near to the work to be heated .as possible. It must be kept out of the direct path of flame, both because that would give too high temperature readings and because partly burned fuel will destroy the tube faster than the quiet products of combustion.

Records of coal in Colorado begin only a few years before the Civil War. In 1859 Macomb reported beds of lignite on both sides of Galisteo Creek, and in the foothills of the Placer Mountains, a place where an outburst and overflow-of trap had changed the lignite into bright, hard anthracite.1 The Union Pacific Railroad sent Joseph T. Hodge to investigate the coal deposits in the Rocky Mountains, close to the projected line, in the fall of 1863. He was told of coal on South Boulder and Rock Creeks, and that somewhere on Lodge Pole Creek it was being worked for supplying fuel for stage stations; a bed was also reported seven miles north of the stage road between Laporte and Latham. It was only in the vicinity of Denver that coal mines were being worked to any extent; these openings were on Coal Creek about 22 miles north of the town, said to have been opened in. 1860. The coal was used by the smiths with ,difficulty and slacked badly on exposure., Some coke was made from one of the seams, the coke being preferred to the raw coal by smiths. Another district was opened along South Boulder Creek, about two and a half miles from the base of the Rocky Mountains, two mines being worked to supply the Denver market.2 Hayden reported a large bed of coal at Golden in 1861 and of having seen a similar one in 1862 about 65 miles east of Pikes Peak, and in 1866, he saw large beds on Rock Creek 16 to 19 miles from Golden. In 1867 he saw the Belmont or Marshall's mines opened in 1863 on South Boulder Creek, which he said was the finest exhibition of coal in the state. The next one was the Murphy mine, on Ralston Creek, five miles north of Golden. A mine was also being worked near Canon City at that time.3 The coal at Golden was being worked in 1864.4 In 1867 the coal mined at Golden was being used in a firebrick' works. At Canon City and other places on the waters of Arkansas River, coal was being mined for use in the valley towns, bringing $5.00 per ton at the mines.5
