THE theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = K MM/R2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C. G. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. GRAVITY AND LEVEL SURFACES Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration. In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm./sec 2) and less commonly merely as centimeter-gram-second units (C. G. S.). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as "the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it commonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

The first paper which appears in the published Transactions of our Institute is that read by our respected Secretary at its first meeting in Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871. It is entitled " The Geographical Distribution of Mining Districts in the United States," and presents a brief but masterly review of what was known of the distribution of our deposits of useful minerals, particularly the metals, not only from a geographical but from a geological stand-point. At the request of Dr. Raymond I agreed, somewhat hastily, perhaps, to write for this occasion a brief sketch of the geological distribution of the deposits of the useful metals in this country, in the light of the increased knowledge of the present day. In the time given no personal investigation was possible, and as it was therefore out of the question to attempt to make anything that could be considered an original contribution to the history of our ore-deposits, I have been obliged to limit myself to an examination of such pub-

WHEN scientific literature was lacking or meager, research necessarily meant laboratory investigation above all else. Today, scientific literature has attained tremendous proportions, and the volume increases at a much faster rate than it is digested and efficiently utilized. For that reason the present-day research worker should spend much more time in the library, and correspondingly less in the laboratory, than is the general custom. Library research would overcome two serious errors often made by scientists: duplication of work described completely and failure to appreciate inventions described almost verbatim in the literature. To emphasize these failings that often occur in present-day research, consider a hypothetical scientist as he conducts his search from inception to the stage where it is made available to the public by patent or other publication.

The mine of the Miami Copper Co. is in the Miami district, Gila County, Ariz., approximately 7 miles west of Globe. In 1906, the General Development Co. secured the ground now owned by the Miami Copper Co., and about a year later discovered ore in a prospect shaft at a depth of 220 ft. The Miami Copper Co. was organized in 1907, the claims held by the General Development Co. were transferred to it, and an active development campaign was inaugurated. The railroad was extended from Globe to Miami in 1909, a concentrating plant was constructed, and the company began producing early in 1911. The unit size of mineral tract in the district is the standard lode claim 600 ft. in width by 1500 ft. in length. Ownerships of land are held in fee. The geology of the district has been described by F. L. Ransome.' The formations of local importance are: The pre-Cambrian Pinal schist, which consists mainly of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks and is commonly of a thinly laminated sericitic variety; the diabase, which is thought to have been intruded in late Paleozoic or early Mesozoic times; the Schultze granite and granite porphyry, considered early Tertiary; the dacite of late Tertiary time; and the Gila conglomerate of early Quaternary. General Items Influencing Mining Methods The bodies of disseminated ore in the district are flat lying masses of irregular outline and variable thickness. As a rule, these masses lack definite boundaries; the orebody follows a curve along one of the main ridges, approximately 5500 ft. in length with a maximum width of 1600 ft. The minerals occur as finely divided and uniformly disseminated chal-cocite in the Pinal schist and Schultze granite. The typical overburden or capping is a barren rusty brown, very friable, highly siliceous, leached schist, or granite-porphyry. The topography of the district is fairly rugged and irregular; the altitude ranges from 3400 ft. above sea level, at the town of Miami, to 3900 ft. on the hills above the Miami orebody. The climate is mild; the mean annual temperature is 63.°F.

SOME time ago the writer needed a cheap, light, and portable hydraulic lift or crane, that would be universal in its application, and that might -be suspended from crane-arms, overhead tramways, beams, etc., and serve all the uses of ordinary hydraulic cranes. This was accomplished by the use of a closed cylinder of wrought-iron hydraulic pipe, provided at its top with the ordinary gland and stuffing-box, through the centre of which passed another similar pipe of slightly smaller diameter, forming in effect the ordinary plunger of the regular hydraulic crane. Over the top of this centre pipe or plunger or piston a disk of iron is placed with two arms projecting several inches from the rim, as may be required. Through these arms long iron rods pass, one on each. side, and are fastened in place by nuts screwed to a bearing immediately above and below the disk. These rods also pass through the enlarged head of the lift down through a casting which closes the bottom of the cylinder, which, at the same time, gives them a bearing, and they terminate at a point below the casting equal to the height of the lift of the crane. The rods at this point pass through a disk similar to the top disk and are similarly secured in place. A common hook arranged with a swivel passes through the centre of the disk, and on this hook the load is suspended. For a stationary hanging crane the apparatus is suspended by two rods passing through the head of the lift in similar manner to the two already described, at right angles to the first, and of sufficient length to let the first set play between them and rise to the full height which the plunger will allow. The second set of rods terminates in an iron disk similar to the one at the bottom of the first set, and a hook through this in turn suspends the entire apparatus. In order to adapt the lift to an overhead tramway, single or double, in place of the suspending rods, a projection or offset is arranged on each side of the head of the lift and a journal cast in, allowing the lift to be suspended on pivots arranged as follows

This paper covers some of the problems presented to the oil industry in the drilling of oil wells in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The hazards, delays and relative costs of offshore drilling are reviewed and various forms of drilling platforms discussed. The requirements of the offshore drilling rig are summarized together with the principal items affecting the cost of construction. Sea waves and their size and characteristics as affecting offshore platforms are reviewed. Drilling platforms are classified as fixed, or fixed and floating. Fixed platforms of the conventional cofferdam and pile-supported type are discussed together with their good points and their limitations. The desirability is pointed out of eliminating as much offshore work as possible where operations are subjected to constant and expensive delay and substituting therefor the prefabrication of structures ashore or in sheltered waters. Marked economy will come with the standardization of offshore rigs aid special means of transporting them to the site. Several types of structure which are partly pile-supported and partly buoyancy-supported are discussed and their possibilities of future usefulness commented upon. General Considerations The predominant attribute of offshore drilling equipment is that it must be equal to the job in hand. We therefore give first thought to the matter of adequacy. In view of the probable depth of drilling, the investment involved and the per diem labor costs, it is assumed heavy modern drilling equipment will be employed. In order to usc such equipment efficiently, the working deck must be ample in size and strength and supported so as to be relatively free from motion and from green seas even in heavy storms. These requirements necessitate a high and rigid land-based support for the drilling rig and machinery with plenty of space for supplies, such as pipe, mud, water and fuel, with reserves for days when transportation from shore is impracticable. In offshore rigs the crew will be housed onboard in comfortable quarters, probably air conditioned and equipped with a galley and refrigerated food storage. An important consideration will be the ability to transfer stores and crew to and from the rig in all but the heaviest weather and the platforms must be protected from the impact of supply vessels when alongside. It will be essential to maintain continuous communication with shore by radio or cable, not forgetting the possibility of a helicopter landing space for the transfer of crew and light stores as well as a means of general communication. Whatever structure is constructed must be secure from storms of hurricane force and a safe place for the operating crew to work. If the well comes in, the drilling rig will presumably be removed and a small but rugged pile-supported platform will remain to carry the Christmas tree with safe working space around it. It will be protected from damage on all sides by buffer piles or dolphins. It is assumed that the flowing oil will be piped to storage tanks in the vicinity of the well. A new correlation of blast penetration in model and operating blast furnaces is presented which overcomes objections to prevzous correlations. It is shown that the tuyere diameter is only of small importance in determining the magnitude of the penetration. The data from operating furnaces correlate satisfactorily with the data from models whose cross section is a segment of a circle. A bubble-shaped gas space called a "raceway" normally exists in front of the nose of a blastfurnace tuyere. The periphery or "wall" of the raceway is well defined and is composed of densely packed charge particles. The blast. issuing as a jet from the tuyere, entrains gas from the raceway, in the usual manner of a jet, as it flows to the opposing wall. There it divides and flows back around the walls to be entrained once more. The blast must, of course, eventually leave the raceway and pass up through the charge column, but before it does it may, on the average, make several circuits of the kind described and in doing so it carries with it charge particles, which, because of their fast and circulating motion, suggested the name of "raceway". A fuller description of the raceway may be found elsewhere."' Here it is only necessary to mention, in addition, the measurement which characterizes its size. If an iron bar is pushed through the opened peepsight of a tuyere, .as far as it will go with ease, it will be stopped by the relatively impenetrable opposing raceway wall arid the distance that the bar has been pushed from the tuyere nose is called the "penetration". This measurement may be of practical importance and has; been the subject, with considerable success, of several attempts at correlation with other variables2-5 as stated in the next section. There is still, however, a serious objection to the most recent correlation,3 which is overcome by the correlation proposed in this paper. It will be shown that the objection is not trivial, in that the new correlation will attribute considerably different importance to the variables affecting the magnitude of the penetration. The data to be treated were made available by Wagstaff and are the same as those used in his correlation. They include measurements taken on small models, in which a cold air blast was used and no combustion occurred, and they also include data from operating blast furnaces at Wheeling and Fairless. The information from the blast furnaces will be shown to be in substantial agreement with those models whose plan views are segments of a circle and which are thus like segments of a blast furnace. First, Wagstaff's most recent correlation3 will be discussed and the objection will be given. Then the new correlation will be developed and its implications considered. CORRELATION OF J. B. John Birkinbine, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Sperry's paper is certainly a valuable addition to the literature upon alloys with iron, supplementing the data already published concerning the influence of manganese, chromium, tungsten, titanium, aluminium, etc.; and it is to be hoped that the presentation of information upon the influences of nickel may bring out comparisons with other alloys. Taking into consideration the properties of nickel, and its use as an alloy in heavy forgings, as set forth in the paper, there would appear to be no serious difficulties in utilizing this alloy by extending its application to pieces of more moderate size. The melting-temperature of nickel, as stated by Mr. Sperry, is considerably lower than those given by various authorities. Its point of fusion being so near that of iron, and its density but little greater, the difficulty of alloying it in the foundry should not be serious, particularly if it is applied as a ferro-nickel. The addition of nickel monoxide (NiO) to molten steel would appear to be less desirable than the application of metallic, nickel or of ferro-nickel, if such is produced on a commercial scale and at a satisfactory price.

Recent publicationsl.2 establishing the presence of cross-slip in strained metallic single crystals oriented wholly within the area of single slip as predicted from the generalizations of Taylor and Elam3 described these markings as they appeared during the initial stages of the deformation process. At that time, the plane having a common glide direction with the primary slipping plane was reported as the cross-slip plane although the specific direction was not confirmed. Consequently, in continuation of the research, it seemed advisable to investigate the micro-graphic appearance of cross-slip together with the Laue back-reflection X ray analysis and stress-strain data during the later stages of the deformation process. Accordingly, a single crystal of brass (72.75 pct Cu, 0.01 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Pb, 27.23 pct Zn) was polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically after the manner described in the earlier paper.' Three pairs of flat surfaces, parallel to the specimen axis, and (1) perpendicular to the plane containing the pole of the primary glide plane and the specimen axis, (2) perpendicular to the plane containing the pole of the cross-slip plane and the specimen axis, and (3) perpendicular to the plane containing the slip direction and the specimen axis, were polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically, resulting in a final minimum gauge diameter of 0.4864 in. in a gauge length of 3.36 in. The specimen was elongated in tension and load-extension readings were taken following the method described in the initial investigation.' Observed reorientations were obtained from a series of Laue back-reflection photograms at the center and ends of the gauge length and at various positions around the circumference of the specimen. These were interpreted after the manner of A. B. Greninger.4 Cross-slip (Fig 1 and 2) was found with the first appearance of the primary slip clusters and usually joined members of these clusters. In addition, a third set of entirely different markings (Fig 3) could be noted. The displacement of this third set by the primary slip lines was measured as 8300 at. diam (3.04 microns). Since the specimen was carefully observed at high magnifications before any deformation and no markings of any type could be noted, it would appear that this third set was formed during the deformation process prior to the initiation of classical primary slip. Additional extensions produced no unusual change in the appearance of either cross-slip or the third set of markings. The number of lines increased with increasing elongation and appeared, generally, in areas where earlier markings were present. The continuity of the clusters of cross-slip lines in Fig 4, 5 and 6 illustrates that they are neither noticeably displaced by nor do they displace the primary lines at this stage. In Fig 7, cross-slip appears in a long narrow localized band approximately 45 degrees from the stress axis. This somewhat resembles a twin band except for the lack of a sharp boundary. After a shear of 0.257, suffcient additional glide occurred on the cross-slip plane to displace the primary slip lines (Fig 8). Generally, where a large number of cross-slip lines could be observed in an area on one flat surface, few cross-slip lines appeared on the diametrically opposite position on the parallel flat (Fig 9). These, of course, were not matched observations on the same glide ellipses. It was extremely difficult to make such comparisons. The third set of markings (Fig 10) was extensively displaced by glide on the primary slip planes. A plot of the width of primary slip clusters versus their displacement of the third set of lines is shown in Fig 11. The slope and the linearity of the plot suggest that each primary glide plane slips to a constant maximum value of shear before further slip is transferred to another plane. A shear value of 0.28 was determined in this case. Heidenreich5 has presented a similar schematic representation of glide for aluminum. After the specimen had attained an elongation of 51.8 pct, corresponding to a shear of 0.973, cross-slip appeared very prominently in certain areas as shown in Fig 12, yet at diametrically opposite positions very little cross-slip could be noted, Fig 13. Classical conjugate slip was found at this advanced stage in the deformation, Fig 14, which corresponds to the axial location shown at 12 in Fig 15. It should be noted that cross-slip occurs within the conjugate slip clusters and on the same plane as the cross-slip associated with the closely spaced primary lines which constitute a background in less distinct focus. THE question, what is the best proportion among weight, fall, and speed of stamps, is one which has not yet received thorough and systematic examination. In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally, the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted. The safest experiments are those made in the same mill, by changing first one and then another condition of working; but this is seldom possible for such conditions as weight and lift of stamps, and only within narrow limits for their speed. We may eliminate questions of friction, transmission, and generation of power, in the case of stamps, by measuring the power actually developed by their fall. Thus, the weight, multiplied into the fall in feet, and the number of drops per minute, gives us exactly the number of foot-pounds exerted by each stamp. Dividing by 33,000, the number of foot-pounds per minute in one-horse power, we have the horse-power per stamp, from which the effective power of the whole mill may be obtained. Dividing the amount of rock crushed daily by the effective horse-power, gives us the daily amount per horse-power; and this is the best measure that can be obtained for the effectiveness of the stamps. A complete discussion of the subject would require us to determine the exact influence of the discharge, etc., and the exact resistance offered by different classes of rocks, for both of which points the data are wanting. SHORTLY after our previous paper on this subject was printed,1 we located a source of uncertainty in the results arising from the unexpected fact that hydrogen slowly reduces silica at 1100° C. in presence of iron, even when the iron nowhere touches the silica, although in absence of iron it does not do so. This difficulty has been completely obviated by the use of a small high-frequency furnace, which enables us to heat the specimen for analysis without raising the temperature of the silica vessel to a point at which any appreciable reduction of the silica glass occurs. We now describe this modification of procedure, and present some typical results obtained with it. For any given specimen of steel, the results are entirely definite and. reproducible, but their precise significance is still open to some question, as indeed is true of all methods of oxygen determination so far developed. Further elucidation of this question is to be expected from the cooperative comparison of the several methods now under way under the auspices of the Bureau of Standards at the instance of the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E.

.In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the resistance of a metal to fracture is a function of all three principal stresses. Consequently since a technical cohesion limit is defined as the technically deter-minable resistance to fracture under a specific stress system, the technical cohesive strength comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits corresponding to the infinite number of possible combinations of the principal stresses. As shown in the previous papers, the technical cohesive strength increases with plastic deformation, with decrease in temperature, and with increase in the strain rate. The technical cohesion limit, therefore, is affected by the same factors that affect the flow stress,$ namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate. The effect of each of these factors on the fracture stress is qualitatively the same as its effect on the flow stress. The effect of any of the factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. Since the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit, the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. In the general investigation described in the previously-mentioned papers, 10-18,20,21,23 the influence of the stress system on the fracture stress was studied by means of tension tests of notched specimens. When a circumferentially notched cylindrical specimen is subjected to longitudinal tension, the minimum cross section is under transverse radial tension. The mean radial stress increases with the depth and sharpness of the notch, but is always less than the longitudinal stress. The greatest principal stress (S1), therefore, is longitudinal, and since the radial stress is effectively equal to the circumferential stress, the transverse principal stresses are equiaxial in that plane (Sz = S3). By the use of notched specimens in tension tests it was shown that the fracture stress increases with increase in the radial stress ratio (s3/s1) The evidence is based not only on the results of tests to fracture at various constant temperatures, but also On results of two-stage tests, in which each specimen was plastically deformed a predetermined

The complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.l It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to he drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the 0 phase, "CuAl2." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. The complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.l It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to he drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the 0 phase, "CuAl2." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact ?' in a high State of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

The word ".development," as used in connection with mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. Rut, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character of development that is considered here. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development" as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its " value " should be determined by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation. Mine Development Account Perhaps the majority of mine accountants will agree that the mine development account is that capital account which shows the extraordinary expenditures incurred in opening and expanding the underground workings of a mine until it has reached its normal production, the expenditures being those made for shafts, slopes, rock tunnels, drift mouths and such relatively permanent work; also payments over and above ordinary mining costs made for driving entries, air courses and break-through; for

4.1-1. Introduction. Open pit mine planning must be correlated to all phases of a mining operation. The factors that must be considered in planning an open pit mine are numerous and must reflect the characteristics and surrounding conditions of a particular orebody. Therefore, only an outline of the subject can be presented here to aid the planning engineer in pointing out procedures that are generally applicable to pit design. The presentation is directed toward the planning of an open pit copper mine, but the procedures discussed should apply in most cases to any type of metallic or nonmetallic orebody. In planning an open pit mine the pertinent elements that must be included are: assays, geology, tonnage and areal extent of ore reserves, topography, mining equipment, economic factors of operating costs, capital expenditures, profit, types of ore, pit limits, cut-off grade, stripping ratio, rate of production, pit slopes, bench heights, road grades, ore metallurgical characteristics, hydrological conditions, property lines, and marketing considerations. 4.1-2. Sampling. Sampling must be adequate to classify the various materials to be removed from an open pit mine. Drillhole assays are plotted on sections and plan maps with ore and waste blocked out by selected bench intervals. These maps are prepared to depict the geological and other conditions existing on each mine level. The confidence factor to be applied to sampling and the resultant assays values must be given careful consideration. In uniformly disseminated de- posits, the confidence factor will approach unity. For widely fluctuating values, the average assay values should be discounted somewhat, the degree depending upon such factors as drillhole spacing. Such samples, at best, represent a very few pounds for hundreds to thousands of tons of ore

THE 6 phase of the Cu-Sn system (Cu,Sn, = 32.53 pct Sn) was considered to be stable down to room temperature until Owen and Iball showed by X-ray analysis that it undergoes a eutectoid decomposition into the a and e phases at a temperature near 300°C. Their findings have been confirmed by other investigators,2-5 a11 of whom used X-ray diffraction studies of powdered specimens. The transformation temperature has been reported by various authors as lying between 300" and 380°C. To our knowledge, no microscopic evidence of the eutectoid reaction has been published, as yet. It was in connection with other work that longtime annealings at 300°C were conducted with alloys containing 22, 32.6, and 35 pct Sn (nominal compositions) prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic tin and cast in a small iron mold. The specimens were first annealed at 700°C for 5½ hr and quenched from 400 °C after cooling to, and annealing at, that temperature for 9½ hr. After this treatment the sample with 22 pct Sn was cold worked for 15 pct reduction in thickness; the 32.6 and 35 pct alloys were too brittle to be cold worked. The final anneal at 300°C was done in a sealed pyrex glass bulb for 63 days. Fig. 1 represents the microstructure of the annealed alloy with 22 pct Sn. It shows primary a solid-solution crystals in a matrix of the (a + 8)-eutectoid formed at 520 °C. The a crystals contain 8 inclusions which precipitated from a due to the decrease in the solubility of tin in copper with fall in temperature. The decomposition of the 8 phase into a (light) and E (dark) can clearly be seen in some areas of the (a + 8)-eutectoid matrix. However, the decomposition is far from being completed, even after the long-time anneal used. Figs. 2 and 3 depict the microstructures of the annealed 32.6 pct alloy, which was intended to consist entirely of 6 phase. Due to some loss in copper on melting, the composition is slightly higher in tin. Accordingly, the sample after quenching from 400 "C consisted of grains of the 8 phase with the e phase arranged along the grain boundaries and as a Wid-manstatten precipitate within the 6 grains. After an annealing time of 63 days, the eutectoid decomposition, 6 + a + e, is still in its early, initial state. The pearlitic type of eutectoid is nucleated at the c crystals, preferably those surrounding the grain boundaries of the 8 phase. The appearance of the (a + €)-eutectoid in the 35 pct Sn alloy was very similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Again, the eutectoid decomposition nucleated at the 6 phase and proceeded from there into the 8 areas. As is evident from Fig. 2, the rate of decomposition of the 6 phase at 300°C is extremely sluggish: In the representative area shown only about 5 pct of the 8 phase has undergone the eutectoid trans- formation after annealing for 63 days. On the other hand, Owen and Williams2 have reported that X-ray photographs of powdered samples with between 17.5 and 34 pct Sn did not show 8 lines after annealing for only five to seven days at 300°C. This is in accordance with the fact that the rate of reaction in powdered samples is higher than in massive specimens, as a result of the excess free energy of the powder (due to its greater surface area). Rather large amounts of titanium minerals and some zircon and monazite are being recovered from dune sands about I. miles west of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Southern Experiment station, has been interested in developing additional large deposits of similar sands in other areas of Florida. The results of a field study have been published1 concerning the sands occurring on Trail Ridge which runs north and south about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville. This investigation was undertaken in order to identify the opaque titanium minerals occurring in Trail Ridge and because of the economic importance of Florida titanium minerals. Nature of the Problem The minerals present in the heavy fractions (sp gr > 2.94) of the sands are principally opaque minerals; staurolite, zircon, sillimanite, tourmaline, kyanite, rutile, a small amount of corundum, traces of the zinc spinel gahnite and garnet. Epidote, monazite, hornblende and ti-tanite are present in other dune sands but these minerals were not noted in the samples collected on Trail Ridge. All of the minerals except those which are opaque can be readily identified by the usual petrographic methods. However, Opaque minerals cannot be examined satisfactorily by transmitted light. Polished sections of the opaque-mineral grains were examined but these sections did not furnish useful information. Consequently, it was necessary to use means other than the usual petrographic methods to identify them. Previous Investigations of Heavy Minerals in Florida Sands Martens2 has described the heavy minerals in the Florida beach sands and has classified the opaque minerals as ilmenite with minor amounts of leucoxene. Miller3 studied a number of sands collected by Ross and Mertie in Florida. He states that the material from the Florida beach and dune sands that commonly has been called ilmenite has essentially the chemical composition of the material that has been called arizonite.4 The x ray diffraction patterns of several samples indicated that the supposed ilmenite is essentially amorphous, with only weak lines corresponding to ilmenite, and hence the material is unlike the type of arizonite from Arizona. Opaque Titanium Minerals Rutile is essentially titanium dioxide. However, as pointed out by Dana,5 important amounts of Fe+2 and Fe+3 as well as Cb and Ta are reported in some analyses.
