Essential features of the role of the fill material in mechanized cut and fill mining are discussed, with particular emphasis on its dewatering and strength development after emplacement. The fill material is regarded as a chemically-reactive porous medium, the most important property of which is permeability. Methods are described for measurement of permeability and other fill properties and results of such measurements applied to develop an orderly approach to the operation.

New ZealandÆs share of global greenhouse gas emissions, at about one fifth of one per cent, is very small. But the profile of those emissions is unique among OECD countries; more than half come from methane and nitrous oxide associated with livestock agriculture. Consequently, fulfilling its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol is potentially quite onerous for New Zealand.In this paper we use a single region, static general equilibrium model to assess the implications for New Zealand of various climate change policy options. The energy and agriculture sectors are modeled in a detailed manner to enable realistic simulations to be carried out.Choosing an optimal set of policies is made more difficult by the fact that New Zealand relies heavily on emission intensive sectors for much of its export earnings. For example, one emission intensive sector alone, dairy, accounts for over 20 per cent of all merchandise exports. Avoiding carbon leakage is therefore an important consideration in selecting appropriate greenhouse policies.Our analysis shows the degree of sectoral adjustment required is substantial. In addition, the total costs depend on the uncertain level of variables such as the global carbon price and the level of afforestation activities in New Zealand, ie the rate of new forest planting.

This paper presents three case studies from three surface coalmines. The first case study is from a coalmine where a dragline operates in 60 m wide and 1 km long strips. Typical overburden height ranges from 30 m to 50 m. The base case blast was modelled using an advanced blasting model (Distinct Motion Code – DMC) to establish the baseline using the blasting parameters in use before optimisation. DMC was used to model the alternative blasting scenarios to obtain the following key objectives:the post-blast muck pile profile was required to have an optimum height of ~28 moptimise cast percentageachieve a well-fragmented muck pile for the draglinethe muck pile profile should be appropriate for the dragline entry into the strip.Achieving these objectives would optimise the dragline performance through reducing rehandle and improving advance along the strip. DMC modelling resulted in the following outcomes:the required muck pile profile could be achievedthe cast percentage increased from 21.1 to 25.1 – a four per cent increaserehandle volumes were reduced.Establishing a good quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) process was essential to delivering a blast that could achieve these outcomes. The blast was fired successfully and the dragline completed the strip approximately two weeks ahead of the time taken for the previous strip.The second case study is from a coalmine where D11 dozers are used to move the blasted material to the spoil. An optimum profile was required for the dozers for this low-cost mining operation. To achieve this, an electronic blasting system (uni tronicTM 600) was introduced to optimise the muck pile profiles being delivered. The new muck pile profiles showed improved cast percentage from 10.6 per cent to 17.8 per cent. The changes in the muck pile centre of mass displacement improved dozer efficiency as a result of pushing material shorter distances to its final position. Dozer productivity (bcm/h) statistically did not change but coal was being exposed at a faster rate.The third case study summarises the results from a site where dozers are used to minimise the total mining cost. Traditionally, excavators had been used on-site with conventional blast designs. After firing the first cast shot, the blasted material was found reasonably well-fragmented. Although dozing productivity hasn’t been quantified on-site, operators were providing positive feedback (easier push) due to the reasonably good muck pile profile suiting to the dozers. The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

High-grade hematite ores in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia are associated with hydrothermal magnetite-apatite and magnetite-hematite-carbonate-apatite proto ores below the modern weathering surface. In addition, hydrothermal alteration of country rocks, once believed to be absent, is now recognised widely in shales and dolerites up to several hundreds of metres away from the ores. Both observations appear to exclude a simple supergene model for ugrading the host iron formations to high-grade hematite ore. Similar hydrothermal proto ores and country rock alteration are now being recognised in other high-grade hematite deposits worldwide, or have been recognised in the past.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

Clause 17 (1) of the Resource Management Act 1991 (duty to avoid, remedy, or mitigate adverse effects) provides the legislative basis for local authorities to impose resource consent conditions requiring land to be rehabilitated to approved uses during and after mining.

In the last two decades three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have become an important tool in engineering sciences. More recently, the safety requirements in underground railway stations have increased with regard to incidents. For this reason, existing underground stations (eg Munich, Strasbourg and Berlin) are being equipped with smoke extraction facilities to protect passengers from smoke and visibility impairment in the event of fire. In addition, designs of planned underground stations (eg Karlsruhe, Doha) also include these facilities.For the commissioning of ventilation engineering systems with complex structures, the functional testing of the whole technical installation are important, as are the acceptance tests of ventilation and equipment parts. This functional testing includes not only the technical inspection of the equipment but also the acceptance measurements of the capability of the equipment and the execution of hot- or cold-smoke tests to confirm the effectiveness of the ventilation system.Due to the fact that the overhead contact line and other sensitive installations were already installed in the tunnel roof at the time that smoke tests were proposed, hot-smoke tests with fire loads up to a maximum of 1 MW could only be executed. Therefore, the evidence of the attainability of the safety objective had to be provided computationally in this special case with a fire scenario of a heat release of 10 MW using CFD simulations.This paper presents the interplay between the results from acceptance testing and smoke tests and the use of 3D CFD simulation and virtual reality using the example of Allmend station, which was repositioned underground and is part of a new section of track from Lucerne railway station to Kriens in the Zentralbahn network. The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer Gold Mine consists of an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation located 734 m directly below active open pit operations. Open pit and underground current production rates are 50 million and 5.7 million tonnes per anum (Mt/a) respectively. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 with breakthrough planned to occur on the 5484 bench of the west wall in late 2009. Risk to the south ramp was identified during this time, resulting in the construction of the north ramp. The SLC was continually tracked from initiation with a suite of monitoring systems and managed with a Major Hazard Management Plan (MHMP) and associated Trigger Action and Response Plans (TARP). At breakthrough the eastern limb of the cave was located within a 70 m horizontal distance from the south ramp. The south ramp was closed in October 2009 due to significant slope deformation, extensive cracking in the berms and batters between the ramp and breakthrough bench and a major failure 250 m to the north of the cave breakthrough. Wall response was first identified from slope deformation measurements taken by the wall monitoring radar in May 2009, at which point the SLC was 160 m from breakthrough. The impact of the SLC on the slope is a unique case with the monitoring systems in place able to provide data on the slope reaction to the SLC progression. This paper will discuss the management of the south ramp such as the early interpretation of risk associated with cave breakthrough, monitoring systems implemented to track the cave progression and wall deformation, data integration and interpretation and risk management. Following the closure of the south ramp further instrumentation programs and risk assessments were conducted to determine the risk of re-opening this haulage route. The outcomes of this program will also be presented.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

Some low grade South Australian iron ores were classified on the basis of their physical characteristics. Ores from Mount Christie and Billeroo are coarse grained mixed ores; Mount Christie ore could be concentrated by gravity or dry magnetic separation at 10 mesh, but Billeroo ore needed to be crushed minus 36 mesh. Ores from Razorback Ridge and Wilgena Hill are fine grained mixed ores; ore from Wilgena Hill could be concentrated by flotation, but poor results were obtained on Razorback Ridge ore. Malcolm Creek ore is non-magnetic and crystalline, and can be concentrated by flotation, but the deposit is small. Ores from Grants Quarries and Peeralilla Hill are nonmagnetic and earthy and could not be satisfactorily concentrated.INTRODUCTIONThe Geological Survey of South Australia has for several years been undertaking a systematic study of the iron ore resources of the State (excluding the Middleback Ranges) in relation to their geology, reserves, and beneficiation. As part of the latter phase of the investigation samples of the ores have been submitted to The Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (AMDL), and it was the study of these samples which provided the material for this paper.The mineragraphic and metallurgical work was undertaken by several officers of AMDL and the results are contained in unpublished reports submitted to the South Australian Department of Mines. Field data published here was obtained from unpublished reports by G. F. Whitten, Senior Geologist, Iron Exploration, of the Geological Survey of South Australia.

Lower greenschist quartzo-feldspathic schists within the N-S trending Earnslaw Synform of the Upper Wakatipu area are pervaded by late-stage quartz filled extensional and extensional shear fractures, with quartz-scheelite lodes infilling normal faults. Exposed veins/lodes mapped over at least 1000 km2 define a paleoflow system developed during late metamorphic exhumation of the schist. Both veins and lodes have consistent angular relationships to the schist foliation independent of their location on the Earnslaw synform. Unfolding the synform leads to a regional subhorizontal foliation and a systematic set of subvertical quartz veins striking NNW extending over a depth interval >5 km, striking parallel to a set of normal faults hosting the quartz-scheelite lodes. The structures define an extensional regime with s1 sub-vertical, s3 oriented WSW-ENE, a low differential stress, and suprahydrostatic fluid pressures.   The quartz-scheelite lodes (<2 m thick) occupy faults which cross-cut the quartz veins, and are traceable for a few hundred metres, at most. The lodes consist of laminated and/or massive quartz, slivers of crushed and folded schist, random and discontinuous lenses of scheelite with clay selvages separating the lode from relatively undisturbed wallrock schist. Textural evidence suggests that slip developed incrementally with total displacement on faults during lode formation on the order of a few ten's of metres.   The distribution of Glenorchy veins demonstrates broad scale hydrothermal flow through low-permeability schist, channelled within dilatant mesh style structures comprising interconnected shear and extension fractures. Flow through the lodes was likely derived from the greater surrounding area via the interlinked network of fractures and focused into the low displacement shears. Available evidence suggests the system developed together in a uniform extensional stress regime toward the bottom half of the seismogenic regime.

ILZRO sights are locked securely on the targets of the expanded applications and ever-improving quality in the major market for zinc-coated steel. A wide range of ILZRO-sponsored research projects examine issues of formability, paintability, and corrosion resistance for traditional hot-dip galvanising, electrogalvanising, and ILZRO's own proprietary zinc coating, Galfan. Recent research has focussed on the on the interaction between Galfan and different substrate steels to determine optimum combinations for different applications. ILZRO enjoys an evolving role in providing the connection between research laboratories and marketing divisions through supporting research and services for the Galfan Technical Resource Centreò(GTRC) and the recently formed North American Galfan Development Authority (NAGDA). GTRC has just produced a new problem-solving manual that provides a comprehensive source of hands-on solutions for the many Galfan licensees throughout the world, and should contribute substantially to the reputation of Galfan as a consistently top-quality steel-coating product. Meanwhile, NAGDA is advancing the market with new advertising for Galfan based on superior corrosion-resistant qualities proven through ILZRO-sponsored research. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

Eyewash safety showers located in remote hot environments may be unsafe to use due to excess water temperature and high risk levels of water borne bacteria such as Legionella. Australian Standard AS 4775 specifies that dispensed water shall be bacteria free and have a maximum temperature of 37.8°C. Legionnaires disease is contracted when water aerosols containing Legionella bacteria are inhaled.Laboratory tests show 30 to 70 times more aerosols are generated by showers operating at 38°C than with showers operating at 25°C. Furthermore, excess temperature in flushing water can cause burn injuries leading to hospitalisation, skin grafts and/or permanent scarring. Excess temperature also increases the rate of reaction to corrosive substances, opens pores in the skin to allow greater dermal penetration and can cause dizziness and fainting by dilating blood vessels and reducing blood pressure.CITATION:Challenor, H A, 2017. For the past decade, demand for Australian resources has reached unprecedented levels, thanks mainly to the emerging superpowers of China and India. Meeting demand has meant miners and governments alike have ploughed billions into capital expenditure projects for logistics infrastructure such as roads, rail and ports, to support the ever expanding number of mines and mineral volumes. In more recent times, however, the effect of the global economic crisis has led to a decline in demand for Australian minerals. The downturn has seen companies lay off workers in droves, and delay or cancel expansion projects, in an attempt to preserve cash flow. Whilst the current economic cycle has hit the mining sector hard, it is an opportunity for companies to take stock of their existing operations and plan for the future. As mining companies grapple for scarce capital resources, it is inevitable that industry consolidation will ensue. This presents challenges and opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike, looking to expand operations, or sell off assets to raise cash.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Any consistent relation between gas condition and subsequent mining conditions - outbursting or not might be valuable in prediction of outbursts.INSTANTANEOUS OUTBURSTSInstantaneous outbursts (Hargraves, 1958) , are largely unpredictable and unaccountable ejections of coal (up to 5,000 tons) and gas (up to 5,000,000 cu.ft.) from a standing coal face. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. Rocks from the shear zone obtained from recent drillholes are unweathered and facilitate paragenetic studies. There is a progression of mineral deposition from semiductile foliation-parallel shearing, to subsequent folding, and brittle fracturing. Sheared rocks are dominated by microshears containing fine grained hydrothermal muscovite and rutile that has recrystallised from metamorphic muscovite and titanite respectively. Euhedral pyrite occurs within segregations in the schist and is locally brecciated by the shears.   Arsenopyrite occurs within microshears and is intergrown with hyrothermal muscovite. Fractures within relatively undeformed schist are filled with ankerite, siderite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and these veinlets also crosscut the microshears. Locally the schist is folded and zones of brecciation, silicification and vein deposition overprint the rock. Vein quartz and albite predominate and arsenopyrite and gold infill breccia matrix and crosscutting veinlets. Sulphide deposition began in the later stages of metamorphism with pyrite deposited in quartz-albite segregations. Subsequent shearing caused brecciation of some grains and accompanied deposition of arsenopyrite ¦ gold and rare sulphides along foliation-parallel microshears. Minor amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena were then remobilised in ankerite veins that crosscut the shears. In areas of high strain, arsenopyrite was then deposited as euhedral grains in veins and breccias. Synmineralisation deformation caused the brecciation of some grains and gold was deposited infilling fractures in the arsenopyrite. The paragenetic sequence shows gold mineralisation occurred in two distinct sets of structures (semiductile and brittle) that formed at different times in the formation of the shear zone.
