The Murray Basin is being heralded as the next major mineral sands province in Australia. Already exploration programs have delineated extensive commercial deposits and several companies are progressing with plans to produce zircon, rutile and ilmenite in the Basin. As these deposits are developed consideration will need to be given to several key issues of the Murray Darling Basin; the availability of fresh water and management of salinity in the area being two of them. In this paper ideas being developed in CSIRO that link the processing of mineral sands with the salinity problem in the Basin are presented. The proposal presented here is to process saline water to produce industrial minerals with large volume applications and to produce value-added products from the mineral sands in the Basin using reagents produced from the saline waters. Processes to produce titania pigment and zirconia consume chlorine, caustic soda, soda ash and hydrochloric acid, all derivatives of salt (sodium chloride). There may be a good economic incentive if these processing plants were located in the close vicinity of each other.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. On a worldwide basis trackbound transportation is on the decline. As mining operations progress from open cast operations to underground operations, most utilise mechanised equipment. However, in South Africa hard rock mines, only a small percentage (¦10 per cent) of the production can be generated by mechanised methods and therefore trackbound mining methods will remain the dominant means to transport ore. In the Australian context there may be occasions where the nature of the orebody would dictate the use of rail transportation with the ore being transported from drawpoints by means of locomotives and hoppers. This paper focuses on horizontal rail haulage systems from the stope loading boxes to the shaft station area and will be largely based on South African experience. It is intended that this document will provide a practical guideline for mine designers and planners during the design process. The paper looks at trackbound transport systems and evaluates such items as construction and management of an underground rail haulage system. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

Mining and metallurgical processing of gold and base metal ores often results in solid wastes and effluents containing high concentrations of arsenic. In addition, arsenic can be released to the atmosphere from gold roasters and base metal smelters. Speciation of arsenic in roaster products, in a stack sample from a copper smelter, in organic soils impacted by smelter emissions, and in an anaerobic effluent treatment system at a smelter site was determined in order to broaden our understanding of the nature and occurrence of arsenic in a wider range of metallurgical wastes. Micro-XANES spectra obtained from iron oxide particles forming in a gold roaster indicate preferential enrichment of As3+ species in maghemite-rich domains and microlayers. In comparison, haematite-rich iron oxide particles are dominated by As5+ species. It appears that maghemite is retarding oxidation of arsenic and its volatilisation during roasting. Arsenic occurs as both As3+ and As5+ species in a stack sample emitted from a Cu smelter, confined to fine-grained secondary product layers accumulated on the surfaces of spherical Cu particles. This is probably resulting from condensation of As species upon cooling following their volatilisation during the combustion process. Soil samples collected at various distances from the Cu smelter are dominated by As5+ species including monomethylarsonic acid and tetramethylarsonium iodide as the organic arsenic species. The presence of reduced As3+ species highlights the importance of organic material influencing the speciation of arsenic and mineralogical transformations taking place within the soil profile. The XANES spectra indicate that arsenic occurs predominantly as aqueous arsenite species in the anaerobic treatment system, contrary to the conventional thinking of As retention by the formation of secondary sulfides.

In 1983 the New South Wales (NSW) Government began to construct a 35 km freight rail line to provide additional rail capacity to Port Kembla in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, through a direct connection between the Unanderra to Moss Vale line at Dombarton to the Main South rail line at Maldon in the Southern Highlands. The project area lies within the carefully managed Sydney Water catchment and is also underlain by previous coal mining activities.Construction of the line halted in 1988 prior to its completion after the NSW Government reassessed the demand case and found that the project was not as viable as originally forecast. However, by this stage the line was partially constructed, including the majority of civil earthworks, approach structures to the main river crossings and establishing the portals for the Avon tunnel as a precursor to major tunnelling works.In 2012, the Commonwealth Government funded Transport for NSW to undertake the necessary engineering and environmental preconstruction works. Most importantly here, the 1980s rail link was predicated upon the use of electrically powered locomotives, whereas the locomotive fleet in operation today in NSW is diesel powered. This fact has a significant impact upon the approach and development of the Avon tunnel section, as the diesel powered locomotives combined with the length and grade of the tunnel alignment produces a unique set of conditions requiring specialist engineering design and systems to ensure safe and functional operation of the railway through the tunnel section.Given the above, the Avon tunnel will need to be supported by a ventilation and smoke control design based on the heat rejection from the locomotive consist, consideration of ambient air quality compliance, comparison against in-tunnel air quality goals, and providing safety systems in line with the fire and life safety strategy it requires.This paper explores the current development of both the tunnel civil works responding to the geography, geology, rail functional requirements, as well as the tunnel ventilation systems being revised to suit the diesel locomotives.Further, this paper describes the importance of combining the design outcomes with the procurement methodology in order to achieve the project objectives, a functional outcome and value for money across the project life.CITATION:Baker, T and Bagis, A, 2014. Rock mass strength and brittleness generally have a significant impact on both cavability and fragmentation. Variability in these properties across a panel or block footprint is of particular interest because stronger units have the potential to significantly impact cave shape. This paper describes how FLAC3D™ was used to examine the impact of variability in rock mass properties on predicted cave performance to aid in assessing potential risks associated with the proposed design.A case study orebody was subdivided into a number of domains to reflect the heterogeneity of the rock mass at the scale of a proposed inclined cave. The results suggest that the presence of stronger units has the potential to impact cave shape significantly in the southern half of the cave footprint and could increase the potential for cave stalling at shallow depths. If this unit is stronger and less brittle than expected, an overhang is predicted to develop in the southern half of the inclined cave at depth. The effective hydraulic radius is significantly reduced due to the overhang in the south, and the cave could eventually stall at shallower depths in the north.CITATION:Garza-Cruz, T V and Pierce, M E, 2016. Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

With a price slowly rising above US$35 per ounce gold became a mineral worthy of prospecting and mining endeavour in the early to mid 1970s. Fortune therefore appeared to smile onNew Zealand with its favourable geological environment for gold and past record of major gold production from both hard rock and placer deposits. This was a particularly welcome development as the post war years, including both the base metal exploration boom of 1967/1971 (which produced major nickel, iron and bauxite mines in Australia) and the earlier period of uranium exploration failed to produce any mines in New Zealand with the exception of the small Tui Mine and iron sand mining. Whilst hard rock mining now appears imminent it is 15 years further along the track since the 1967/1971 exploration boom and eight years since the upsurge in prospecting for gold in 1978. New Zealand still has no hard rock base or precious metal mining. This is not for want of proven or potential gold mining situations for these clearly exist at Waihi, Monowai Reef, Golden Cross, MacRaes Flat and elsewhere.

The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. I report results of over 850 microprobe analyses of sulfides, sulfosalts and electrum from the Favona adularia-sericite epithermal deposit of the Waihi district in the southern Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand. Pyrite and marcasite from altered wall rocks that enclose the veins are stoichiometric, with compositions of FeS2, and no significant trace elements. In contrast, pyrite in veins commonly contains appreciable As (up to 3.2 wt per cent), and locally contains several tenths of a percent of Cu, Zn, Co, Ag and Sb. Vein pyrite may contain up to 0.22 per cent Au, but Au contents do not show a positive correlation with As. Limited electrum data indicate that it ranges from Ag0.47 Au0.53 to Ag0.54Au0.41Cu0.01Zn0.04. Chalcopyrite is stoichiometric CuFeS2, and most galena is PbS, but some galena contains up to 4.4 wt per cent Se, which substitutes for S in its lattice. The galena is not argentiferous; the highest Ag content is 0.45 wt per cent Ag. Sphalerite averages 4 mol per cent FeS, but ranges up to 15 mol per cent. Tetrahedrites [(Cu,Ag)10(Zn,Fe)2(As,Sb)4S13] show variable substitution, but most are Cu- Zn- and Sb-rich. Veins also contain aguilarite (Ag4SeS), stromeyerite (CuAgS), naumannite (Ag2Se), and mckinstryite [(Ag,Cu)2S].

3D photogrammetry is a powerful tool for data capture and interpretation, utilised at all Australian underground MMG sites. In personnel constrained mines, 3D photogrammetry can free up personnel time, improve data quality for resource modelling, as well as benefit other mining departments.At Rosebery one of the challenges faced by geologists was no longer data capture but, rather, avoiding paralysis by analysis from the sheer abundance of information currently available to the department. Although the data had been interpreted, the structural model was cluttered; the geological block model was not incorporating any geological domains captured by 3D photogrammetry, nor was it being utilised by other departments such as geotechnical engineering.The geology department is now focusing on utilising all the interpreted data gained from each photograph heading into an uncluttered, easily understandable model for geologists and other mining departments.Our solutions involve integrating the Leapfrog modelling suite into the process, streamlining the structural model, tailoring the data interpretations for future updates of the block model and training other departments to improve utilisation of the interpreted data. This process also uncovered other benefits for near-mine exploration, and improving our understanding of the deposit’s origin.CITATION:Robertson, M, 2017. Hydrometallurgy has a history of over 300 years with copper leachingand cementation having been exploited in Spain as far back as 1670.Since then, hydrometallurgy has become an integral, expanding branch of extractive metallurgy. This paper reviews major developments in hydrometallurgy over thepast century with emphasis on recent commercial developments and their impact on the mining and metals industries. The environment in which these developments has taken place has changed significantly in the past two decades and many factors, often non-technical, have emerged as constraints on the operation of existing plants and the expansion and development of new hydrometallurgical operations. Finally, a number of possible new developments that will shape thefuture of hydrometallurgy in the new millennium are discussed,particularly as they relate to the assimilation of technical advances in other areas of science and engineering. The impact of current trends in the education of hydrometallurgists and the provision of research in support of these future developments is also addressed.

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. "Current closure objectives and criteria are often difficult to achieve and are not delivering value for money outcomes at closure. Current mine closure processes tend to focus on rehabilitation and revegetation of landform structures to as close to premining condition as possible, rather than focusing on the functions of those structures and values they provided. Because mining has highly disturbed the environment, premining conditions and vegetation are often not achievable and objectives and criteria aimed at achieving close to these conditions have been shown to be very costly.The authors have developed a broader approach to developing mine closure plans that is based on environmental risk and gaining post-closure social, environmental and economic value. We think the focus should shift from trying to return the original landscape to returning functions and values provided on- and off-site. If it is not possible to return values on-site in a cost-effective manner, investment should be provided to deliver equivalent values elsewhere.This process can provide better stakeholder acceptance, deliver better environmental outcomes on the tenement and within the catchment and significantly reduce costs, whist fulfilling closure obligations.This framework should enable closure teams to: focus on the functions and services that are important to achieve as outcomes post-closure, rather than a focus on revegetation and replacing the premining biophysical structure engage meaningfully with stakeholders regarding closure outcomes and link outcomes to stakeholder values conduct transparent option evaluations that enable stakeholders to clearly understand the costs and benefits associated with each option and to participate in dialogue on option selection.We present examples of how the framework could be applied to identify alternate closure options that achieve equivalent value outcomes while reducing the costs of closing the mines.CITATION:Howard, B, Pershke, D and Jones, M, 2014.
