Kriged estimates are not typically calculated on blocks substantially smaller than the sample spacing (eg the Standard Mining Unit or SMU). Moreover, the sample spacing for quality variables is often much greater than the SMU size. For short to medium term planning decisions, the shorter term variability in the quality variables is a key economic consideration in defining, setting and meeting coal product specifications.Global uncertainties can be calculated using Drill Hole Spacing Analyses (DHSA). However, knowing the precision of a variable for a one or two year production volume is usually not adequate for variables with low spatial continuity that may fluctuate significantly over daily, weekly, SMU, or shipment volumes.Is there a feasible, reasonable and valid geostatistical method to model the uncertainty of coal quality variables on blocks substantially smaller than the drill spacing (say on the SMU)?The validity of using co-kriging variances, calculated on SMUs to characterise local uncertainty, was tested using a suite of conditional simulations generated for several quality variables for BHP’s Blackwater operation. The conditional simulation results were used as a benchmark against which the results derived from the kriging variances could be compared.The agreement between the kriging and simulation methods for thickness is excellent, with much closer correlations than for the quality variables. The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

Cretaceous volcanic activity (Hauterivian Albian) in the Peruvian Andes can be found along the coast of Peru and the western edge of the Andes mountains between 15o30'S and 5o30'S, extending discontinuously in south to Chile and north to Ecuador and Colombia. This volcanic activity formed in three aborted marginal basins; the NNW-trending volcanic Ca±ete and Huarmey, and NNE-trending Lancones basins. These volcanic rocks are predominantly andesitic and basaltic in composition, of calc-alkaline and tholeiite affinity with subordinate dacitic and rhyolitic rocks. One notable feature is the appearance of æocoitasÆ from Ica (14oS) south to Santiago de Chile. These rocks have a calc-alkaline to alkaline affinity. From south to north, the continental crust gradually becomes thinner, allowing mantle material to rise towards the surface. Ophiolitic sequences of this type form a marginal basin in Colombia. Very low-grade regional metamorphism which affects the volcanic rocks also varies gradually from south to north. Between Santiago de Chile and Ica this takes the form of burial metamorphism, with moderate geothermal gradients (20o-30oC/km). Metamorphism in the Huarmey basin is transitional between burial and ocean-floor metamorphism, with very high geothermal gradients (>3000C/km). High geothermal gradients are also apparent in metamorphism of the Lancones basin, though less than the other basins. Ocean-floor metamorphism is present in the ophiolitic sequence in Colombia. Associated mineral deposits in the Huarmey and Lancones basins, and in the north, are of the volcanic massive sulphide-type (VMS). The principal deposits in Peru are Leonila Graciela (20 Mt Zn and Pb) and Tambogrande (40 Mt Cu and Zn). There are also smaller mines and prospects. To the south of Lima, manto-type Cu deposits (CuMT) are found with a mineralogy of chalcopyrites, pyrites, magnetite, actinolite and apatite. The main example is Raul Condestable (10 Mt Cu). Other prospects are present to the south and Chile has some very large mines of this type (El Soldado, Lo Aguirre). The notable differences between the CuMT and the VSM deposits are thought to be the result of the prevailing conditions in the earthÆs crust during the Hauterivian Albian. To the south, calc-alkaline and alkaline volcanic activity in aborted marginal basins, with thicker crust, was thick, produced moderate geothermal gradients associated with burial-type regional metamorphism and deposits of CuMT. In the north aborted marginal basins associated with calc-alkaline to tholeiitic volcanic activity and a gradually thinning crust, produced transitional regional metamorphism between burial-type and ocean-floor type, associated with high to very high geothermal gradients and VMS deposits. In Colombia these conditions led to ophiolite extrusive rocks, ocean-floor metamorphism and also VMS deposits.

The manganese deposits¦of Western Australia are mostly superficial. They hav' been formed during the Cainozoic Era by supergene enrichment ò6f Precambbrian: manganiferoius sediments, and by deposition from -solution on, or'in caves in, the Cain- ozoic land surface. The manganese in solution was derived from the weathering of Precambrian manganifer.ous s.edimexsts, None of the deposits are of hydrothermal origin, nor are they related to igneous rocks in any war, other than as ultimate source rocks. There is ho evidence-'t.o.:sugge,st that meta- morphism has been responsible for.the emplacement of any deposit. The tenor of the ore varies'aec'ording'to the quantity of gangue in the orebody and- also to the nature of the part- icular ore minerals. The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

The purpose of this paper is to outline the basic policy problems for good community relations programmes in the resource extraction industries of Papua New Guinea. The main focus of the paper will be on defining and analysing those problems which lie on the landowner side and which are still not widely understood within the resource extraction industries despite several decades of turbulent experience. Many of the companies operating in the resource extraction industries of mining and petroleum and gas have in recent decades adopted, by choice or necessity, 'good corporate citizen' policies. Some of these companies now pursue ethical business, environmental and community relations policies. Some have adequately funded and well-trained staff in their community relations departments. Although different industry sites scattered over Papua New Guinea show significant differences in their experience of social conflict, I argue here that a good deal of this variation has less to do with the differences between the companies' public relations policies and their effectiveness and more to do with the conflict causing features of indigenous society. Experience suggests that even a company well-equipped with good intentions, good policies and good staff may experience serious difficulties in maintaining good community relations in Papua New Guinea. Many of these difficulties, I argue, can be traced to causes that lie, essentially, within the structure of Papua New Guinean communities and in the customs and social relations of Papua New Guinean peoples. Accordingly the attention of this paper is focussed on the conflict causing aspects of Papua New Guinean society. It is true, to the point of being a cliche, that Papua New Guinean societies are oriented very strongly towards achieving consensus and social harmony. In this regard Papua New Guinean communities differ significantly from, say, Australian communities. My purpose here is not to denigrate this aspect of Papua New Guinean societies but, rather, to point out that the drive for consensus is driven by the desire to avoid its opposite, dissensus. This paper sets out to define the dissensual aspects of Papua New Guinean societies and my special interest is in those conflict producing aspects of Papua New Guinean societies that are most resistant to the mechanisms that are designed to create social harmony. A survey of the recent history of industry and community relations in Papua New Guinea indicates that there are three main factors present on the landowner side which are liable, separately or through their interaction, to cause difficulties. These factors are respectively generational challenge, social boundaries and custom variability and I shall discuss each of these in turn.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of quartz-reef fields that make up the greater Central Victorian Goldfield. At Bendigo gold particles are characterised by their very coarse nature, ranging from below 100 to over 10 000 ¦m in size. Some 60 per cent of the gold occurs in particles greater than 1000 ¦m in size. This characteristic ensures that the mineralisation is very challenging to both sample and evaluate. Diamond drilling provides a measure of geological structure, but is a poor measure of in situ grade, understating it by up to 75 per cent. Drilling combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and geological interpretation has been used to define Indicated Mineral Resources. For grade control, a balance had to be sought between sample representivity, cost, turn around time and practicality. Sampling of extreme nugget effect deposits generally requires the use of bulk sampling in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a 50 kg micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can discriminate between ore and waste. As the mine passes into production, grade control will increasingly become dependent upon geological data collection and interpretation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

The Harbour Lights Mine situated at Leonora in Western Australia, mines a refractory sulphidic gold ore. The main sulphide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite. Due to the association of gold with the pyrite and arsenopyrite, gold recovery is not amenable to the normal cyanidation process.A pyrite/arsenopyrite flotation concentrate is produced at Harbour Lights. This concentrate has been stockpiled for the past two years.A bio-oxidation process (BIOX«)* to treat refractory gold flotation concentrates has been developed by GENMIN in South Africa. Harbour Lights acquired the technology from CRL BIOX« Pty Limited in Brisbane, to treat the refractory gold concentrates.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

The function of a thickener is to optimise and accelerate the process of gravity sedimentation. The desired end product (be that maximised concentrated solids or clarified liquid) determines how the thickener is designed and operated.Significant internal research, together with extensive on-site piloting, by Outotec has resulted in the determination that the application of the appropriate amount and type of shear to hindered settling aggregates can result in a substantial change to the sedimentation process. A new patented technology, called shear enhanced thickening (SET), has been developed. SET results in considerable design implications for full-scale thickeners, including a substantial reduction in required footprint and/or significant increases in underflow density.The development of SET, combined with laboratory and pilot scale verification, will be discussed along with the introduction of this technology to a number of full-scale thickeners. Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the mining and processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. The audits described in this paper involve working with site personnel to develop and implement major improvement projects, providing advice on how to improve environmental practices and facilities, and disseminating innovative ideas and practices across the site and to other operations within the same group. Essentially the lead auditor assumes the role of a æskills coachÆ as opposed to a æpolicemanÆ, which is quite often the case for many audits. The audit process has been developed from involvement with a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years and more recently, with a metalliferous mine in the Northern Territory. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided. The auditing process as described is applicable to metalliferous mines, the processing of mineral ores, coal mines, coal handling and preparation plants, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

Employing gravity recovery for coarsely liberated gold and sulfide ores has potential to lead to a signifi cant reduction in the energy required for comminution and ultimately can have a significant impact on gold processing. Most of the recognised metallurgical tools at our disposal currently have been designed around recovery of relatively finely ground minerals. In order to change the paradigm of fine grind for liberation, a new set of tools need to be recognised that are capable of separations in the coarser size fractions. Some of these tools already exist and some need to be developed but the key is the way in which the fl ow sheets are arranged. A very strong understanding is required in the existing tools and their capabilities before these new flow sheets can be optimised. Only when we understand the existing gaps in technology can we start to fill these positions with new candidates. Many ores when crushed liberate their gold bearing minerals at coarser sizes than current practice would suggest (Figure 1). In order to characterise this response in ores it is necessary to utilise some new techniques in the lab such as gravity separation and ore sorting at the sizes greater than 15 mm followed by gravity recovery on fractions from 15 mm down to 150 ¦m. The most difficult range has been the mid-sized fraction from 4.0 mm down to around 150 ¦m. This is the size range in which many ores show economic liberation starting to occur and coincidentally this is the range in which many commonly used metallurgical processes reach their operational limits due to physical constraints. Examples of these processes are flotation, hydrocyclones and whole ore leach in agitated tanks which are currently the mainstays of the processing fraternity. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. When a highly anisotropic or weak rock mass is subjected to high-stress conditions, it can lead to large ongoing deformations or squeezing ground conditions. Squeezing ground conditions can impose increased support costs, delays associated with rehabilitation, and disruption to production schedules. Ultimately, in more severe cases, it may result in complete drive closure. Several recent case studies investigated the squeezing mechanism and measures to control squeezing ground in underground mines and also to design appropriate ground support systems. Effective management of squeezing ground conditions requires a sound understanding of the failure mechanism and the driving forces. Once the failure mechanism is understood, the appropriate ground support system should be tailored to specifically manage the critical driving forces that control the squeezing mechanism. Support type, support stiffness, reinforcement length, support density, installation times and mining sequence all have important impact on the effectiveness of the support system. This paper provides a case study at the Ballarat Gold Mine in Australia, where drive squeezing was associated with foliated ground conditions located below 700 m depth. Numerical modelling was used to better understand the failure mechanism and the driving forces that lead to squeezing conditions. The effectiveness of various support types was compared to installed ground support performance. This has provided a credible methodology for assessing and optimising the selection of reinforcement in squeezing ground conditions. CITATION:Talebi, R, Roache, B and Vakili, A, 2018. These have resulted in new legislation which will have an impact on mining economic costs as well safety and health of miners. This paper discusses the changes that new legislation and regulations are making to the industry and current research that is producing technologies to make mining safer and will likely impact the future of mining.

The anticipated economic life of the mine, which defines the rate of mine production, is dictated initially by the design capacity of the mill/concentrator and the production capacity of the mine relative to the grade and tonnage of ore that can be encompassed by the pit design. A small pit will result in smaller investment and cash flow; in contrast, a larger size of pit will increase capital investment and annual revenue. Since open pit mine design and long-term production sequencing are essentially based on three-dimensional block models, changes in block dimensions leads to different mine sizes, and therefore changes in the mine life. The physical characteristics of the deposit, such as reserve tonnage and ore grade, affect the expected future revenues from the mining project, and consequently they affect the life of the mine. Large blocks will increase the recoverable ore reserves and production rates and hence increase the mine life. This paper discusses the effects of the block dimension on the commercial ore reserve, grade-tonnage curve and its effect on the production rate, ultimate pit size, mining cost and consequently the mine life. The result shows that block height is the most effective parameter governing the economical life of the mine.

The effect of using SO2 as an anodic depolariser in the electrowinning of copper from aqueous acid sulphate solutions has been studied using cells without/with a ceramic diaphragm. In all cases SO2-saturation of the electrolyte/anolyte decreased the anode potential by 68 to 75 per cent largely due to a change in the anode reaction from the oxidation of water to the oxidation of SO2 . However, poor quality deposits and low current efficiencies are encountered if SO2 is allowed free-access to the copper being deposited at the cathode. This situation is easily avoided by using a diaphragm to restrict SO2 to the anode compartment and for these conditions the resultant copper deposits are of a similar (high) quality to those obtained in the absence of SO2.

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.
