"Kahama Mining Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, poured the first dore bar and filtered the first concentrate produced at the Bulyanhulu mine on February 28, 2001. This event marked the completion of the initial development of the Bulyanhulu Mine – Barrick’s first mine located outside of the Americas.Bulyanhulu is a 2,500 tpd underground mine located in the Lake Victoria gold belt of northern Tanzania. Gold is recovered as a gravity concentrate and smelted on site to produce dore bars or collected in copper concentrate that is shipped to offshore smelters. The facilities were constructed to meet Canadian standards. Unit operations include single stage crushing, SAG milling, gravity recovery, flotation, thickening and dewatering. Tailings are converted to paste and returned underground as paste backfill or pumped to the surface tailing site. The surface paste tailing disposal system is believed to be first of its kind in the gold industry. Paste disposal has several advantages over slurry, including lower dam construction costs, reduced water losses, and lower reclamation costs. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the challenges faced during development and construction including logistics, lack of infrastructure, recruiting and training, security, and social issues as well as initial operating results.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Gold Corporation completed the Bulyanhulu mine development in 2001. Capital cost of the project was US$280 million. The mine produced 241,575 ounces from start of milling to year end at a total cash cost of $197 per ounce. Numerous challenges were overcome in the mine’s development due to the general lack of infrastructure in Tanzania and the mine’s location some 1200 km inland by road from the port of Dar es Salaam."

"IntroductionIn autogenous mills, grinding of the ore feed is accomplished by the direct action of the variously sized rocks making up the feed on each other and the mill interior. Size reduction is achieved without the addition of grinding media foreign to the mill feed, differing in this respect from rod, ball, and pebble milling. The term ""semi-autogenous"" has entered common usage in the industry to describe autogenous mills to which supplementary grinding ball additions are made to increase the rate at which size reduction of the mill feed occurs, beyond that achieved solely by the action of rock on rock. In a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, 50Jo to 10% of the mill volume may be occupied by grinding balls, whereas a range of 25% to 45% is more usual in ball milling.The comminution of mineral ores using ""conventional"" techniques has been described in previous papers. In conventional operations, size reduction of mined ore, and liberation of the valuable mineral content, is typically accomplished using flowsheets employing two to four stages of crushing. Crushing is followed by one to three stages of grinding and classification using various combinations of rod, ball, and pebble mills. This paper describes operations employing autogenous or semiautogenous grinding as the principal stage in the comminution process. Primary crusher discharge, or in some instances run of mine ore, is fed directly to an autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding circuit. Final product sizing may be accomplished in a single grinding stage, the mills operating in closed circuit with classification equipment, or in several stages using autogenous and semi-autogenous mills for primary grinding, and ball or pebble mills for secondary grinding. In several operations a portion of the primary mill discharge is crushed in an intermediate comminution step, these circuits being called autogenousball- crusher circuits (ABC). Many different flowsheets exist, but common and important to most are crushed ore stockpiles, reclaim feeder and mill feed conveyor systems, pumps, screens, and classifiers. Autogenous grinding is employed in both wet and dry processes, although today wet predominate."

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

"Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on. Presently the global gold production surpasses any estimated expectations.Present efforts are directed towards showing the evaluation and optimization of the different parameters that govern the performance of the Knelson concentrator, as well as illustrating the difficulties and successes throughout the operating period.In the first year of operation 200 tons of gold concentrate have been produced with an average concentrate grade of 320 gramdton, having paid back in full the cost of the automated KC-XD- 48 Knelson Concentrator, the peripheral equipment, and the cost of the installation."

"A great deal of effort has been expended in the last 11 years by the authors and others to identify the correct power required to grind ore in a SAG mill, by developing ore hardness variability functions for the ore body to be mined. This paper describes the next step in the SAG design process, which is choosing a SAG mill to accomplish the required specified design performance.At the test work stage, each ore hardness data point is a unique and discreet bit of information that represents the energy required to grind the ore represented by that sample at optimum SAG conditions. When the design criteria are set, it is now considered necessary that the required power draw in the mill chosen be provided at optimum conditions as well.Based on actual 3-ft diameter pilot plant results, we can now show that the grinding efficiency and throughput drop when the optimum load limit is exceeded. Future work is expected to show a similar reduction in efficiency when exceeding optimum speed. Providing specified power by exceeding these optimum conditions is not adequate and leads to a lower cost but underperforming SAG mill.It is possible in some cases to modify a SAG circuit to force it to perform better, but this often takes time, much effort and costly modifications. In most cases the capital spent on a properly sized SAG mill may prevent production losses that would be many times greater over the extended start up period. This is the direct result of choosing the proper SAG mill at the start.INTRODUCTIONThe sequential steps required for the design of any grinding circuit, have changed dramatically in the last seven years. Previously, it was considered necessary to do six foot diameter SAG mill pilot plant tests on representative samples of minus six inch ore (F80), in order to understand design requirements. It can now be shown that this method is costly and not likely to produce the desired result because it is difficult to recover six-inch material from deep within a new mine. The representative nature of the sample is often compromised when the sample is selected."

TVI Resource Development (Phils) Inc. Canatuan mine is a polymetallic ore deposit located in the Province of Zamboanga del Norte on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The deposit consisted of an oxidized capping of gossan overlying a Besshi type volcanogenic massive sulphide lens which is near surface and flat lying. Construction and development of a sulphide processing plant began in early 2007 and commissioned in November 2008. During the initial stages of sulphide operation, high copper (Cu)-low zinc (Zn) ore was fed to the plant. Marketable copper concentrate at 91-95% recovery was produced utilizing a high-pH bulk sulphide rougher flotation and 2 cleaning stages. Because of increased levels of Zn of the ore body, a Cu/Zn separation circuit was initiated in early 2010 following an intensive laboratory test work program. This Cu/Zn separation circuit was necessitated because of the copper ion pre-activation of the sphalerite that lead to the zinc being readily recovered to the copper rougher concentrate. In-situ activation of zinc (in the pit and stockpiles) was caused by the leaching of secondary copper minerals in the ore (particularly from the dominant copper species, chalcocite and covellite). This problem required the development of metallurgically complex and intensive reagent regime to effectively depress the activated sphalerite. As well, the immediate reactivation of zinc after it has been depressed, at the onset of Cu/Zn separation flotation, added additional metallurgical complexity to the process. Subsequent to the Cu/Zn separation circuit, an unconventional, yet proven effective, simultaneous cyanide detoxification-zinc flotation circuit was set-up to recover the zinc. Laboratory test work results realized Cu-Zn recovery differential from a Cu/Zn separation circuit of over 40-45%. This performance has been achieved in the plant, at 72% Cu overall recovery. With the gradual improvements on-going with zinc circuit capacity and effective zinc separation being achieved, zinc recovery has currently reached 40%.

"This paper describes the distribution, occurrence, and paragenesis of known sulphide deposits within an area bounded by longitudes 102°00' to 106°00' west and latitudes 54 ° 301 to 57 °00 1 north. The Precambrian bed-rock which outcrops over all but the southern fringe of the area con- . sists of regional metamorphic assemblages ranging from low grade or green schist facies to high grade or amphibolite-granulite facies. The areas . of low-grade metamorphism correspond to 'islands' of volcanic rocks which are surrounded by highgrade paragneisses and migmatites. Intrusive rocks range in composition from ultrabasic to granitic and may be divided into syntectonic and posttectonic sequences. The average composition of the former is granodiorite and of the latter quartz diorite.The massive sulphide deposits fall naturally on basis of mineral content into the following divisions: ( 1) pyrrhotite and / or pyrite, (2) sphalerite and/ or chalcopyrite plus iron sulphides, (3) sphalerite and galena, ( 4) sulphide-bearing pegmatite, and (5) nickeliferous pyrrhotite and / or chalcopyrite. The deposits of iron sulphides are ubiquitous. Ratio of pyrrhotite to pyrite is fairly constant for individual deposits, but their areal distribution appears to be independent of the nature of the enclosing rock and grade of regional metamorphism. All deposits containing ore-grade quantities of base metals have been concentrated at favourable structural locations. Copper-zinc and lead-zinc deposits appear to be associated with syntectonic granodiorite with the lead-zinc concentrations confined to calc-silicate gneisses. Copper-nickel deposits show a close relationship to post-tectonic gabbros and pyroxenites. The paragenesis is more or less the same for the majority of deposits, with iron sulphides and sphalerite being introduced early and followed by chalcopyrite and galena. Some vertical and / or horizontal zoning is apparent in a few deposits. Temperatures of formation and origin of the deposits are briefly discussed."

"High quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold in Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP), and Carbon-in-Column (CIC) circuits. Goldcorp’s Campbell complex at Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) experienced a period of low soluble gold (Au) recoveries during Q3 2013, during which time the processing plant saw higher than typical Au grades in the CIP tails solution stream. A technical review identified that the CIP circuit may be experiencing a carbon-fouling issue. To further understand the degree of fouling, and to troubleshoot the low recovery problem, samples of carbon were collected from the CIP, elution, acid wash, and regeneration circuits, and submitted for characterization test work. This paper summarizes the steps taken to remedy the carbon-fouling problem at RLGM resulting in increased overall Au recovery.Overview of Red Lake Gold MinesRed Lake Gold Mines is located approximately 450 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Ontario’s western boundary region.All mining is carried out through underground operations, utilizing overhand cut and fill, underhand cut and fill, and long-hole mining methods. Ore types include: silica-replaced carbonate veins with free milling gold, siliceous replacement-type mineralization (rich with arsenopyrite) marginal to veins, broad disseminated sulphide mineralization along major shears, and some minor sulphidized chemical sediment-hosted ore. The operation is supported by two milling complexes: Red Lake, and Campbell.Process DescriptionThe Campbell processing plant's main unit operations consist of grinding, gravity concentrating, flotation, autoclaving, leaching, carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon elution and reactivation, electro-winning, bullion smelting/refining and cyanide destruction, and concentrate handling. A schematic of the plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.BackgroundHigh quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold at many CIP/CIL/CIC processing plants. At RLGM, gold-bearing ore is milled and cyanide is added to leach the gold from the solids into solution. The dissolved gold then comes into contact with activated carbon, and adsorbs onto its highly porous surfaces. Gold is then recovered by separating the activated carbon from the main slurry for further refining. As such, the characteristics and quality of the activated carbon have a significant and direct impact on overall gold recovery."

"Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, (TMM) has recently completed a prefeasibility study evaluating the development and operation of an underground copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and gold (Au) mining project on the Maturi deposit in northeastern Minnesota.The Maturi deposit is a magmatic Cu-Ni-sulphide deposit occurring along the basal contact of the South Kawishiwi intrusion, comprised of heterogeneous troctolites to gabbros forming a tabular body designated the BMZ (basal mineralized zone). These rocks provide the major gangue mineralogy (plagioclase, olivine, and clinopyroxene) with local, minor rock-forming orthopyroxene, biotite, magnetite, and ilmenite. Altered silicates exist within local fracture and/or alteration zones, which are commonly associated with minor faults in the regional area. The Maturi deposit is comprised of four main mineralized zones within the BMZ, referred to as Stage 1, Stage 2 (S2), Stage 3 (S3), and Upper Heterogeneous. Chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, and pyrrhotite are mainly hosted within the S2 and S3 units, with talnakhite frequently occurring within the S3 unit.A cross-discipline approach combining geology, geochemistry, metallurgy, QEMSCAN™ mineralogy, and mine planning has been implemented to develop a preliminary geometallurgical model and life of mine metallurgical performance forecast. This paper provides an overview of the methods that were used to develop the model and forecast, and discusses the advantages of such a model in project development and evaluation.INTRODUCTIONThe TMM Project proposes mining a copper-nickel-palladium-platinum-gold-silver (Cu-Ni-PGM) magmatic sulphide deposit situated in the Duluth Complex of northeastern Minnesota, USA. The prefeasibility study proposes a 45,000 million tonnes per day mine and concentrator facility to produce two saleable concentrates. The mine will access two separate deposits, Maturi and Maturi Southwest. Saleable concentrates are the final products of the sequential flotation plant where a high grade Cu concentrate is produced followed by a Ni concentrate."

"INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

Zinc production by Cominco Ltd. began in Trail in 1916 at a rate of 55 metric tonnes per day (t/d) and was increased ,in several increments until now electrowinning capacity approaches 750 t/d. The last increment, 40-t/d high-productivity electrowinning plant, was commissioned in 1974. In this paper, the design and operating experience with both the existing electrowinning plant and the new high-productivity plant are described.

"The gas dispersion measurement sensors and methodology developed by the mineral processing group at McGill University have to-date been employed at a number of plants in Canada, Australia, the U.S., South Africa and South America. In some cases the measurements have been directly linked with metallurgical performance while in others the gas dispersion surveys on their own have proved very useful in understanding the behaviour of the flotation cells. In addition to reviewing the current state of the gas dispersion measurement technology, the paper will present a series of case studies from the various plants and will show how this technology brings a remarkable new level of understanding to flotation behaviour. The influence of the bubble size distribution on recovery and grade are emphasized in the paper.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundThe advent of new sensors to characterize gas dispersion parameters in flotation cells is a development that is long overdue. While the chemistry of flotation has been studied since the early 1900’s, it is only now that the significance of bubble size distribution, gas rate and gas holdup can be meaningfully measured in-plant with robust and precise sensors. Early researchers, like T.A. Rickard (1916) recognized the importance of understanding the role of air and bubbles in flotation when he wrote in 1916 “we know that the key to the flotation process is to be found not in the oil, the acid, or the apparatus, but in the bubbles. The man who understands the mystery of a soap bubble has mastered the chief mystery of flotation”. In his 1999 review paper on The Froth Flotation Century D.W. Fuerstenau laments the fact that due to their “inert nature”, bubbles have never received their due attention from researchers who tended to focus on the chemical, physical, surface and colloidal aspects, rather than the physics of the process. It is perhaps fitting that now, 100 years after the inception of industrial flotation practice at Broken Hill, Australia, researchers and industry have turned their attention toward the importance of truly understanding the role of bubbles in flotation."

Silver and cupric ions have been proven to play the roles of catalysts to promote the oxidation kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid solution. In this study, the interaction between silver ions and cupric ions during ferric leaching of chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution has been investigated. The electrochemical study by Tafel analysis showed a significant boost of dissolution rate for chalcopyrite dissolution in Fe3+- Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution after Ag+ was added in the solution. For 10 ppm Ag addition, the dissolution rate of chalcopyrite increased to 7.94 ×10-6 A/cm2 from 3.2 ×10-7 A/cm2, when Ag+ was absent. On the other hand, the effect of Cu2+ on the dissolution of chalcopyrite in Fe3+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solution was not obvious from electrochemical measurements. The chalcopyrite leaching tests in different acid solutions showed that silver addition had an obvious catalytic effect on promoting chalcopyrite dissolution. Comparing the leaching rates of chalcopyrite leached in Fe3+ containing, Fe3+-Ag+ containing, Fe3+-Cu2+ containing and Fe3+-Cu2+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solutions, it was found in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution, the leaching rate was highest among all the aqueous acid systems. Further leaching tests suggested that with increase of the Ag+ concentration from 0 to 20 ppm, the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution also increased and reached 57.62% with 20 ppm Ag+ addition after 24 h. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most important copper mineral in copper hydrometallurgy and it accounts for nearly 80% of the universal copper resource (Olvera, Rebolledo, Mora, Dixon, & Asselin, 2018). The hydrometallurgy of chalcopyrite has been intensively studied with emphasis on solving the slow dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid environment. A variety of aqueous systems, such as sulfate (Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima, & Tsunekawa, 2001), chlorides (Liu, Chen, & Yang, 2017), and ammonia (Hua et al., 2018) have been studied to improve copper leaching. From another perspective, chalcopyrite leaching studies have indicated that the mechanism of chalcopyrite dissolution in acid solution is essentially electrochemical (Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). Therefore, extensive studies have recently been carried out to explain the dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in different media by various electrochemical techniques.

"A novel on-line visualization system, previously developed at Syncrude Canada Ltd., has been modified to characterize rising bubbles, particles and particle-bubble aggregates in a flotation process. With this system, the bubble size and rise velocity in a laboratory flotation cell can be determined. The technique allows the loading of solids on bubbles to be visualized, thereby providing an in-depth understanding of sub-processes of flotation. A step-by-step data processing procedure is presented. The applicability of the developed system to mineral flotation and bitumen extraction is discussed. Under batch flotation conditions in a laboratory Denver cell, three main bubble-particle attachment patterns are observed. They are: i) single particles attached to single bubbles, ii) particle aggregates loaded on single bubbles; and iii) a group of particles aggregated with a group of bubbles. The results demonstrate that the on-line visualization system is a powerful tool for understanding and diagnosing flotation processes.INTRODUCTIONAir (Gas) bubbles are an indispensable component in a flotation system. Both industrial practice and theoretical analysis indicate (Yoon, 1993; Diaz-penafiel and Dobby, 1994) that the size and population of bubbles are two important process parameters in modeling flotation. More recent investigations (Finch, et al., 1999; Gorain, et al., 1997) suggest that for a given flotation system, bubble surface area flux, defined as the air liquid interfacial area per unit time and unit cross-sectional area of flotation cell, showed a better correlation with the flotation rate constant. As a result, the bubble surface area flux is now being considered as a key parameter to account for the combined effect of bubble size and population in evaluating the performance of flotation machines and modeling flotation processes. However, the success of using bubble surface area flux in flotation process modeling largely depends on how accurate it can be determined or estimated (Finch, et al., 1999)."

"MillMapperTM is a new 3D laser scanning technology that has only recently been introduced into the North American mining industry. It enables mill operators to gain a much more complete understanding of the condition of their mill internals and to more accurately predict how liners will perform in the future. This paper describes the technology and techniques used to obtain data on internal mill conditions, how this data is processed into meaningful information which enables better prediction of liner life and gives examples of the reports provided by the software. Examples are given, using client sites data, on how this information is being used to reduce the costs and improve the revenue from SAG and ball mills.INTRODUCTION Scanalyse Pty Ltd developed the MillMapperTM technology in Australia over a number of years and has recently introduced it into North America with a significant take-up in Canada. The technology was commercially released in Australia in late 2006 and there has been significant technical development in the features provided since that time. MillMapperTM has been accepted as a useful technology in the Australasian region and more recently has been introduced to sites in Chile, Peru, Brazil, USA, Canada, Laos and South Africa. Over 100 different mills have been scanned and the technology has been thoroughly tested and validated. It has become an integral tool in condition monitoring and improvement programs for SAG and Ball mills across many sites and is now providing significant and measurable benefits to the mining industry. Some of these benefits will be described in this paper using actual examples."

"The effective thermal conductivity (ETC) is one of the most important thermo-physical properties of porous media. Due to the lack of higher precision influence of temperature on thermal conductivity, we took 6 groups of experiments on rock samples (including igneous rock, sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock) under different operating temperatures from 20? to 50? by 7 acquisition points. The general equation of thermal conductivity drives the value of it increasing along with the decreases of the temperature. While in our experiments, it is easy to find a singularity among them for each sample. The experimental investigations we attempted to observe and interpret the alteration mechanism. According to the Heat Capacity Theory in solid state physics, this research gives the explanation about the “singularity” from 3 understanding of specific heat, average free path, and thermal conductivity. Our research divided the condition of the rock thermal conductivity into 3 different types. INTRODUCTION The effective thermal conductivity (ETC) is one of the most important thermo-physical properties of porous media(Huang & Han ,1988; Peierles ,1955). This parameter is necessary for analysis of heat transfer(Vaferi et al, 2014;Hans-Dieter & Rudiger,2003). It’s well known that a general equation for ?(T) was set by Sass et al. (1992) which based on the coupled effect of composition and temperature on the thermal conductivity(Jesse et al, 2013; Mongelli et al,1982).The equation was further successfully verified for other rock (Zumrud et al,2010;Abdulagatova et al,2009;Seipold& Huenges,1998).Thermal conductivity is also related to other physical proper ties of porous rock, such as thermal diffusivity, heat capacity(Brettmann et al,2011;Abuel-Naga et al,2008). It is well known that ETC and other thermo physical properties of rock materials are affected by various factors, such as temperature, pressure, mineralogical composition, porosity, stratification, size and shape of the components, and nature of pore fluid, etc. (Tiedje & Guo, 2014; Touloukian et al,1970).The understanding of heat transport processes still requires the knowledge of thermal properties of rocks."

Introduction The world's largest known deposits of natural sodium sulphate (Glauber salt), generally termed 'alkali ' throughout western Canada, are located in the Province of Saskatchewan: reserves are estimated to exceed 200,000,000 tons. These are surface deposits resulting from the recent or present-day natural evaporation of brines, in which respect they are similar to those occurring in certain other parts of the world, as in semi-arid sections of the United States, Russia, Germany and Austria. In some areas, underground deposits formed hundreds of thousands of years ago have been _encountered in drilling, and indications are that they also were formed under arid or semi-arid conditions. The master key to the formation of deposits of natural sodium sulphate, wherever they occur, is a climate, either past or present, under which evaporation exceeds precipitation over a considerable period of time. Commercial development of the Saskatchewan deposits began about thirty years ago. Previously, the demand for sodium sulphate had largely been met by salt cake produced as a by-product in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid from common salt. The rapid increase in the production of Kraft paper and, more recently, the development of synthetic detergent materials, have caused a marked increase in the market for sodium sulphate. This chemical gives the extra toughness to Kraft paper and is used in detergent compositions in proportions as high as 75 per cent. Saskatchewan now has six commercial plants producing natural sodium sulphate. Production from each in the fiscal years 1947 and 1948 is shown in Table I. The newest and latest plant is that of Saskatchewan Minerals, at Chaplin, which 1s designed to produce up to 150,000 tons of salt cake, 98.5 to 99.5 per cent pure, yearly. This is equivalent to about 24 percent of the total United States production of crude commercial salt cake for 1947.

The mining industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformative change.  This is the result of the social and financial accountabilities that the industry is faced with because of the world’s desire to cap average temperature increase to 1.50C above pre-industrial levels (UNFCC, 2016).  To limit global warming to 1.50C, greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2025 at the latest and decline 43% by 2030.  In hard rock mining, comminution is identified as the major energy consumer, being responsible for 40-60% of the electricity use.  It follows that comminution is the major greenhouse gas emission process of the mine.  All effort is being made to radically reduce the carbon emissions of comminution. Grinding media plays a large role in the energy consumption and carbon emission story.  In recent years industry practitioners have attempted to quantify the grinding media carbon footprint.  This paper makes a definitive contribution to that discussion.  The grinding media carbon footprint is quantified in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission terms in the context of a grinding media supplier.  Major emission contributors, steel, natural gas and electricity are discussed in detail.  The steel industry transition is a key factor. The paper will explore the steel industry transition and its effect on grinding media manufacturing.  The carbon footprint of heritage steel process routes are analysed and compared with the process routes of the future.  Emerging steel making technologies are presented and discussed.  The future of the steel manufacturing and procurement route for grinding media is proposed. This narrative allows for a comparison between the heritage carbon footprint and the future carbon footprint of manufactured grinding media.  Of equal importance is the opportunity of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint in the field.  The paper explores possibilities of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint at the customer site.  Media in use options are presented that take account of the mineral characteristics, the mill dynamics, and the product metallurgy to optimise both carbon footprint and media performance. It is intended that this is a landmark paper in the discussion of the carbon footprint of grinding media.

"The development of high capacity adsorbents with uniform porosity denoted, MP-HMS (Mercaptopropyl – Hexagonal Mesoporous Structure) using nanotechnology, and their ability to extract gold from solution, is presented. The preparation of highly effective heavy metal ion adsorbents by the incorporation of thiol moieties into the pore channels of mesoporous silica molecular sieves has been the subject of many nanotechnology research investigations. The unique feature of these nanoporous adsorbents is their ability to adsorb gold ions from ultra-low concentration solutions like mine effluent as well as from leached solutions in gold mills. The preliminary studies from laboratory simulated gold solutions show that the adsorption capacities of these materials are also among the highest reported. MP-HMS has shown the capability to adsorb 370 mg gold per one gram of the nanomaterials from Tetrachloroaurate solution (up to 37% of their weight). Experimental studies indicated that the maximum adsorption of gold (as high as 99.9% recovery). The current studies will be extended to investigate the interaction of ionic gold complexes with nanomaterials. Future development of this work may lead to either to replace the conventional CIP/CIL processes or use nanomaterials in tandem with the former, suggesting plausible use of mesoporous material in pulp, MIP or in leach, MIL, as a novel gold extraction process.INTRODUCTIONGold typically occurs at very low concentrations in ores less than 10 g/t or 0.001% (mass basis). At these concentrations the use of aqueous chemical (hydrometallurgical) extraction processes is the only economically viable method of extracting the gold from the ore. Typical hydrometallurgical gold recovery involves a leaching step followed by the separation of the gold bearing solution from the residues, or adsorption of the gold onto activated carbon adsorbent. After elution from the activated carbon the gold is further concentrated by precipitation or electrodeposition."

"The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill’s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “circuit classification system efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and ultimately the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b, and McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the percentage of “coarse” (typically with reference to the plus P80) size material occupying the mill (versus “fines” or product size material, finer than the circuit P80), and can be calculated by taking the average of the percentage of coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, which is derived as follows.We define “fines” as any product size material, and “coarse” as that targeted to be further ground, the two typically differentiated by the circuit target P80. For any grinding circuit, the production rate of new, product size material (fines) must equal the specific grinding rate of the coarse material (i.e. fine product generated per unit of energy applied to the coarse material) times the power applied to the coarse material."
