This contribution of the concept of mass blasting both closing and production allows breaking paradigms, to limit the number of tons to thunder. The areas of geotechnical different mining large mining companies worldwide and especially from the National Copper Corporation (CODELCO, Chile) has been declining volumes closing blasting and production, with the misconception to protect the end walls of the pit, before any geotechnical risks caused by various types of faults; especially the circular faults. A blasting of small tonnage can do more damage to a wall when it is not properly sequenced, leading to the coupling of the wave train and therefore the exponential damage in/s (peak particle velocity, PPV) on the wall of the Tagus. Blasting closing mass production and contribute technically and operationally in the dynamics of the following operations: loading, hauling, crushing, processing and preparation of the final product; eliminating delays to return to thunder small volumes where one must stop all mine equipment, incurring high costs and especially losing valuable time in the continuity of the following unit activities.

The effect on an explosive column of the sharp transient stress waves generated during the earlier detonation of adjacent blastholes is of paramount importance to explosives users. Some explosives will sympathetically detonate under these stresses. Others may suffer a transient desensitization, arising from a temporary increase in the density of an explosive beyond certain limits and persisting until the explosive mass relaxes back to the original density. Some explosives are so adversely affected by these stresses that the product suffers immediate and permanent loss of sensitivity. These effects can be clearly seen while blasting in tough conditions such as burn cuts or wedge cuts and in materials, such as coals, that propagate shock waves well.

By recording the arrival time of a pipe wall at evenly spaced intervals in a plane perpendicular to the pipe axis, application of the equations of motion permits calculation of the pressure of the explosive acting to accelerate the pipe wall. Data observed from various non-ideal explosives are presented, together with values of pressure to be expected from thermodynamic calculations.

A bridge over a main line railroad system was scheduled for demolition. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and spanned three mainline railroad tracks which could not be shut down due to blasting or demolition. To further complicate matters, the mainline tracks had high tension power lines running above the tracks, but below the bridge. These high tension wires provided the electricity for electrically powered trains. The tracks could not be damaged or disrupted, nor could the power line be broken.

Several large quarrying projects recently occurred in Miramar, Florida. These were closely monitored by the Seismologist of Record and Broward County in accordance with County and City regulations. In addition to this monitoring, the City of Miramar employed The Pepper Engineering Group, Inc., to provide additional spot check monitoring and to review the records of the other two parties on a routine basis. Broward County ordinances require that the location of each shot and the nearest protected structure be recorded along with seismograph measurement of each shot at the nearest protected structure. The positions of the blasts and nearest protected structures were determined using GPS. The blast vibrations were measured by seismograph. Over 600 shots, which are the subject of this study, were measured both by the County, the Seismologist and, on many occasions, The Pepper Engineering Group. As such, the vibration data was constantly cross-checked for consistency. The blasting contractor also provided blast designs for each shot. In this paper, the measured vibrations are plotted in terms of Resultant Peak Particle Velocity (RPPV) versus Scaled Distance (SD) on logarithmic scales. The data curves are fitted with least squares and upper 95% and 99% prediction limits are provided. Equations are presented to predict the RPPV based on scaled distance and prediction level using power fits. Statistical information concerning the derivation of the various limits is presented. The raw data used to develop this paper, along with other information concerning the shots, will be posted on the Internet for use by other researchers.

Many technological advancements have been made in explosive products and applications over the last 15 years resulting in productivity and cost gains. However, the applications of total energy (engine horsepower) in the majority of rotary drilling technology, has remained virtually unchanged over that period. While advancements have been made in components, efficiency, and types of hydraulic systems used on drills, the application of current hydraulic technology to improve drilling productivity has not been interactive with end users. This paper will investigate how traditional design assumptions, regarding typical application of horsepower in current rotary drill systems, can actually limit productivity.

A series of small-scale crater tests were performed in concrete and sand in an effort to understand the cratering process in large-scale field blasts. The surface orientation of these tests varied from flat to a 30° slope. In comparison to previous crater experiments in competent oil shale, the crater tests in concrete produced craters similar to those in oil shale after scaling the measurements for differences in the mass of explosives among the experiments. Material strengths and the degree of brittleness had a significant effect on the size and shape of the crater. The small-scale sand tests resulted in some crater features that were similar to large explosive tests in alluvium and soil.

The surface vibration field in the area above an underground mine prior to its development has been investigated, in order to assess the vibration levels expected in existing buildings and in the planned mine facilities from future underground blasts. Shots of 50 and 100 kg of explosive placed in drillholes at depths of 100 to 150 m were fired, and the vibration events were recorded using an array of 40 seismographs in a 400 m square grid, covering a 2×2 km area. Contours of isovelocity were obtained for each shot, showing some directional transmission patterns. Propagation laws were obtained from the results of each shot and also from the bulk of data, both for the whole area and dividing it into four quadrants. The shift of dominant frequency with distance was also analyzed.

A goal of all mine operators is to optimize the breakage of the inplace rock to achieve maximum excavating efficiency. The use of the seismograph at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division, open pit mine in Ely, Nevada, has demonstrated that optimum blastability can be predicted by knowing the seismic velocity of the inplace rock. The relationship of seismic velocity to the quantity of the explosive required to achieve adequate breakage of the material can be determined. Once quantified, this relationship can be used by the mine operator to obtain the optimum drill pattern and powder factor for breaking the material to be excavated. A substantial savings in primary and secondary drilling and blasting costs can result from using the seismograph for blastability determination.

The information will enable him to set minimum standards in product selection, blending, and application.

The time domain during which an explosive detonates and causes rock to fragment and displace is on the order of tens of milliseconds. Because of this, the dynamic processes that occur during this time frame often become a source of confusion when trying to analyze the performance of explosive products in decked blast designs. As an illustration, the authors have experimentally examined explosives malfunction in decked blasts through state-of-the-art measurement techniques. The interaction of explosive products and blast geometry was examined in detail using the analysis of a series of decked blastholes. Explosive and initiator malfunction in decked blasts is often considered to be entirely the result of insufficient inert decking material, however, it is shown that rock properties and dynamic burden conditions may have a significant impact on decking performance. The successful application of deck-blasting technique for control of ground vibration amplitude relies on an understanding of the true dynamic performance of the blasthole.

The aim of this study was to understand clearly how VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives is influenced by parameters such as nitrate salt composition in the oxidizing phase, product density, blend composition, gassing rate, type of sensitization, etc. Also some VOD testing was performed on watergel-based gassed explosives in order to compare the results with those obtained for emulsions. VOD measurements were conducted in the surface blasting facility at the Research and Development laboratory of ENAEX SA (Calama, Chile). Despite the fact that the influences of some parameters on VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives are easily predicted, there was found to be an unexpected correlation. Although it is commonly believed that the VOD of gassed explosives depends on the density, this study found that the VOD depends on the both size and the amount of gas bubbles incorporated into the product as well as type of sensitisation, regardless of whether the explosive was straight emulsion or a blend. Density is just a consequence of the incorporation of voids into the explosive. Future work in this area may examine variation of other parameters, in order to obtain a greater knowledge of detonation properties and therefore to design more efficient explosives.

Blasting techniques and protective measures exist that can mitigate risks associated with flyrock and the nuisance of vibration, and overpressure. However, these are often misused or not used because there are no prescriptive regulatory requirements and typically urban blasting guidelines do not exist. The relationship between the increasingly negative publicity that the urban blasting industry receives and the existing state of regulatory control on blasting in urban environments is presented.
