"Longwall mining is generally recognized as safer, more productive and economic when compared to room and pillar underground coal mining. There has been, however, increasing concern for the control of airborne coal dust concentrations in long wall faces. The airborne dust cloud at a longwall face is a complex aerosol system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. For the development of more effective dust control practices in longwall faces, it is necessary to understand more clearly the characteristics of the longwall dust cloud.In this paper, results of a research study on dust concentration distributions along longwall faces are presented. The objective of this study is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behaviour and provide necessary fundamental data for a better understanding of the longwall dust problem. MSA personal samplers and gravimetric total dust samplers were employed to collect respirable and total airborne dust samples. The size distribution of these samples was determined by MicroTrac SPA. The instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentrations were recorded using RAM-I. The dust concentrations are related to face operations, particularly the shearer location and activities. The size distribution of airborne dust, instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentration, and air quantity distributions along longw all faces reveal a complex dust flow phenomenon. Additional fundamental studies are needed for characterizing the temporal and spatial behaviour of the dust cloud at longwall faces.IntroductionModern mechanized longwall mining was introduced in the United States in the 1960's and has become more common in the last twenty years. United States longwalls are multiple-entry retreating faces. According to a recent survey, 91 of the 102 longwall faces employ double-drum shearers (1). Several recently installed longwall faces have consistently produced over 4 000 to 5 000 tons per shift over extended periods of operation. The trend in under-ground coal mining in the U.S. certainly is toward the introduction of longwalls. This trend is true not only for new mines but also for renovation of existing mines. While longwall mining has many advantages over other mining methods, including improved safety, such as higher pro-duction. greater productivity and enhanced reserve recov-ery, it is associated with severe problems of dust control. The increase in longwall production has been accompanied by an increase in respirable dust problems which limit realizing the full potential of the longwall mining system. Despite the efforts to develop improved equipment and operational procedures to control the dust levels at longwall faces, it is still difficult to bring several double-drum shearer operations into compliance with the Federal stand¬ards of 2,0 mg/m 3 respirable dust without loss of produc¬tion. In fiscal year 1987, fifty-eight of the longwall sections were found to be in non-compliance once, and an additional 31 were cited two or more times'''. If the full potential of the longwall mining method is to be realized, new measures must be implemented to control the dust concentration to mandated levels. There is a need for detailed and extensive sampling of longwall faces to understand the dust source-sink relationships and the transient ambient concentrations. These must be related to the mining activities on the face. This paper is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behavior through a series of experiments in operating faces and provide necessary fundamental data for further studies to develop improved dust control practices."

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.

The objective of this research is to find the extent of the range of applicability of previously developed statistical methods for determining grade and tonnage of ore to bedded uranium deposits. Uranium assays obtained from gamma-ray logs of exploratory drill holes are used to compute grade and tonnage of ore in the deposit by a standard polygonal method and by statistical analysis. The results obtained by the two methods are compared. The uranium-assay frequency distributions are shown to be lognormal and a simple transformation permits the use of standard normal curve statistics. The effects on the assay frequency distributions of stratified sampling, a required minimum mining thickness, and increased assay-interval length are investigated. The addition of low-grade mineralization to make up the required minimum mining thickness results in a distinct change in the skewness of the assay frequency distribution. Any statistical inference regarding grade-tonnage relationships that will be produced, using the minimum mining thickness, should be made on the basis of this "revised" assay frequency distribution.

The Kline tract ?3.nd the Frey tract are two separate properties situated in the Wentworth district on the easterly edge of the Tri-State zinc-lead region (fig. 1). The Kline tract is in the southwestern corner of Lawrence County, Mo., and the Frey tract, 1 1/2 miles west of the Kline, is in the northeastern part of Newton County, Mo. A bureau Of Mines drilling project embraced work on both properties, but the amount of work done on the Frey tract was comparatively small. At the time of the project the Kline tract was under lease to the Wentworth Mining & Milling Co. The Surprise Mining Co. held the lease on the Frey tract. Underground workings on the generally flat-bedded are deposits of the Kline property-covered an area of-about 15 acres. No total metal-production records are available. In 1942-1943 the mine, operated by the Wentworth Mining & Milling Co., produced at an average monthly rate of 83 tons of 60-percent zinc concentrate derived from mining and milling 1,700 to 2,100 tons of ore. At the end of that period no significant amount of reserve ore was in sight. The gravity-flotation mill on the property was operating at about one-sixth capacity.

The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. Although coal is found in several locations in Virginia, almost all recent mining has occurred in the southwestern part of the state. Potentially minable reserves are estimated at 2.6 billion tons, slightly less than one percent of the national total. Coal ranges from high- to low-volatile bituminous, and seams average three to four feet in thickness. Virginia produces coal with higher BTUs (British Thermal Units) and a lower sulfur content than the national average. Historically its high quality has made Virginia coal attractive for metallurgical coke production and for the export market. Coal production and related industries have a significant economic impact in southwestern Virginia. In the seven coal- producing counties, coal mining is the major industry. In the two largest coal-producing counties (Buchanan and Wise), over 40 percent of total earning is derived from the coal industry. Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,198 1, and received final approval May 8, 1984. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program December 15, 1981, with emergency program authority approved November 13,1987.

This study investigated the formation of vapor complexes between aluminum chloride and the chlorides of iron, titanium, and silicon. For the A1-Fe-C1 system the proposed gaseous complex species is Al2Fe2C112(g), which is formed according to the reaction 2A1C13(s) + 2FeCl3(s) = Al2Fe2C112(g) The corresponding free energy expression was determined to be ?G° = 38091.49 - 71.45 ? T 400 < T < 600°K The vapor composition above AlC13 melts contaminated with FeC13 was calculated. In the Al-Ti-CI and Al-Si-Cl systems the proposed vapor complex species are Al2Ti2Cl14(g) and Al2Si2Cl14(g) respectively. Free energy expressions were estimated for the formation of the two complex species. Again, the vapor composition above AlCl3 melts contaiminated with TiCl4 or SiCl4 was determined. The results of this study were compared with previous studies on the three systems.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

Metal-mine fires in the United States are not of frequent occurrence and relatively for of those that do occur result in loss of life, although many cause heavy property loss or are costly to extinguish. Over a span of years, however, more lives are lost in metal Trines from fires than from any other of the untoward occurrences which afflict metal mining, such as electrical storms, floods, cave-ins, magazine explosions, or strikes. In perhaps more than 90 per cent of the fires. in metal mines&apos; there is no loss of life; hence, the general public, even the general mining public, seldom hears of these fires, though the property loss frequently reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars; on the other end, in some instances the property damage from an underground metal-mine, fire has been negligible and the loss of life comparatively high. In any comprehensive study of metal-mine fires, ventilation is certain to be found a vital factor. The influence of ventilation on fires and the influence of fires on ventilation are of vital importance. In metal-mine fires very few persons meet death from actual contact Pith heat or flame; nearly all fatalities are duo to asphyxiation or suffocation. A well-planned, well-installed, and well-operated mechanical ventilation system is unquestionably one of the best available present-day protections from loss of life and property in case of fire in a metal mine; that this is true is attested by the usual helplessness of mining officials in trying to handled underground fires in a mine that has not had the foresight to install mechanical equipment to control underground air flow. On the other hand, the establishment of high-velocity air currents without sufficient day by day attention to such details as the method of coursing, or controlling, or confining them most certainly tends to increase dangers from fires rather than to aid in the avoidance or elimination of these dangers; the truth of this latter statement is shown by the fact that the greatest, loss of life in metal-mine fires during the past 20 years has been in relatively well-ventilated workings, and in every case the life loss has been due to some more or less trivial or easily remedied defect in the Ventilating system - usually a defect that has had some reference to doors used or supposed to be used to deflect or control air currents.

Lower Sunnyside seam coal from Utah was blended with various proportions of char and high-temperature coke to improve the quality of the coke obtained from carbonizing this coal. The Hanson 5-pound carbonizer was used as a "screening test" for the larger scale Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests, which were correlated with industrial production. Eighteen carbonization tests were made in the BM-AGA 13-inch retort, with a coal charge of about 90 pounds; the cokes were evaluated by the standard ASTM tumbler test. Carbonization of blends containing char and coke breeze yielded less fissured and blockier cokes of significantly higher ASTM I-inch tumbler indices as compared with the value for the straight Sunnyside coal. It was found that the simultaneous addition of char and coke breeze yielded stronger cokes than that obtained by the addition of either one of these additives. Addition of a small proportion of Pocahontas No. 3 or Sewell coal to an optimum blend improved the resulting coke strength further.

To process and use the heavy ends of petroleum effectively, the development of suitable separation and characterization procedures not currently available was required. A systematic procedure was developed by the Bureau of Mines using such techniques as isothermal and molecular distillation, chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, and spectrometry. Using these techniques, the Bureau achieved a detailed separation and characterization of a 370° to 535° C distillate from Gach Saran, Iran, crude oil. Such a systematic procedure and the semiquantitative data resulting therefrom should be of value in selecting feedstocks and in optimizing petroleum processing operations.

Gypsum mining and processing has been one of the principal industries in Iowa for more than 75 years. For most of that period, Iowa has ranked among the five leading States in the production of crude gypsum and of calcined-gypsum products. The Fort Dodge area accounted for 11 percent of the gypsum products produced in the United States in 1956. Before 1927 the output by the major companies came from underground operations, using a room-and-pillar stoping method. At present, all production comes from quarries. The quarry methods at the various properties are similar. This paper describes the quarrying, methods employed in the district and the type of equipment used by each company. The sections on history and geology are, in part abstracts from State annual reports and an Iowa Geological Survey publication.3/

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the properties of arc-melted iron-chromium alloys ranging in chromium content from 12 to 50 wt.-pct. Alloys were prepared by consumable-electrode arc melting of electrodes composed of high-purity chromium and high-purity iron. Alloys were fabricated to rod and sheet, and the following data were obtained: Electrical resistivity, hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength at room temperature; and creep-rupture life at 650° C. (1,200° F.). As the chromium content of the annealed alloys varied from 12 to 50 pct., the properties varied as follows: The electrical resistivity increased proportionally from 41 to 53 microhm-cm,; the Rockwell hardness varied from A 38 to A 58; the tensile strength ranged from 52,000 to 96,000 p.s.i.; the impact strength of V-notched charpy specimens varied from 140 to 405 ft.-lb., and the 100-hour creep rupture life at 1,200° F. varied from 5,000 to 16,000 p.s.i.

Accurate measurements of physical dimensions of a section of stainless steel capillary tubing are presented and used to develop two final working equations for an absolute gas viscosimeter. The effects of pressure and temperature on these dimensions are considered. The internal surface finish and nonuniformity of the capillary bore are discussed, as well as entrance, kinetic energy, gas slippage, and gas compressibility correction factors.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an in-mine case study on two consecutive three-entry gate road systems designed in accordance with the stiff-yield pillar design concept. This Bureau study was conducted in order to further develop technology that will improve the health and safety aspects of longwall mining. Support loading and strata activity were monitored to determine the effects of retreat longwall mining on the gate road ground control system. Analyses of pillar stress and roof bolt loading histories revealed that headgate roof support elements ex-perienced cumulative loading throughout the life of the longwall panel. Tailgate pillar loadings had significantly different histories from the loading histories of the headgate pillars. Stress relief occurred in the tailgate pillars following the passage of the longwall face. More-over, the stiff-yield pillar design, with the abutment pillar placed adjacent to the working panel when part of the headgate system, provided effective ground control in that no major roof falls or roof problems were experienced in the headgate or tailgate systems during longwall mining.

A comparison has been made between cubes and spheres in the matrix of the high-intensity wet magnetic separator. For two inclined plane surfaces, such as may occur with cubes, the maximum force value, H [dH-dx] is at the point of nearest approach and is much higher than the force resulting from adjacent spheres. Although the maximum force value for cubes is higher, it decreases more rapidly at increasing distances. The maximum force for spheres is at an appreciable distance from the point of nearest approach. At field intensities for magnetic saturation of the iron spheres, the force extends to further distances with greater uniformity approximating that of the constant force or isodynamic field. The force is also independent of the sphere diameter, which permits the scaling of the sphere diameter to provide changes in particle migration distances without changes in force gradient.

For several years the Bureau of Mines has conducted surveys to determine the changes in motor gasoline being sold throughout the United States. The present survey shows that far the districts in which samples were collected, the average gasoline is becoming more volatile instead of less so, as is sometimes supposed. This year&apos;s gasoline is much more volatile than that sold two years ago, and it has a somewhat better distillation range than last summer&apos;s samples. A comparison of the average figures for several years, shows that motor gasoline is also becoming more uniform in character. The large seasonal change is disappearing, but ?winter gasoline&apos;, still has a lower initial boiling point than "scanner gasoline". This difference in volatility is made intentionally to facilitate starting the motor in cold weather. The end point shown in the present survey is slightly lower either than that of last winter or of the summer of 1921.

The Federal Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on a pressure-gasification pilot plant for producing synthesis gas directly from pulverized coal, oxygen, and steam. A pressure-gasification pilot plant has been constructed, and an investigation was made with the following basic objectives: 1. Determining the effect of varying pressure (75, 100, 150, and 300 p.s.i.g.), coal rate (400, 700, and 1,000 pounds per hour), and oxygen-to-coal ratio (8 to 11 std, c,f. per pound), on percentage of carbon gasified, oxygen and coal requirements per unit of CO + H2 produced, exit-gas temperature, and heat loss. The steam-to-coal ratio was maintained at approximately 0.3 pound per pound. 2. Development of a stabilized gasification zone or reaction space. 3. Improvement in operability of the pilot plant.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if correlations exist between the chlorine or nitrogen contents of materials and the hydrogen chloride (HCI) or hydrogen cyanide (HCN) concentrations evolved during the thermal decomposition of these materials. Hydrogen chloride, hydrogen cyanide, and carbon monoxide (CO) were found to be the primary toxic gases evolved during the combustion process. The experiments were carried out in a 20-L furnace with 1-g samples. The furnace temperature, rising from ambient, was set at 1,000 °C with an airflow of 10 L/min. The variables measured were the gas loads (milligrams per gram) of HCI, HCN, CO, and CO2 (carbon dioxide); CO and CO2 concentrations as a function of time were also measured. Other variables included the average concentrations of submicrometer smoke particles and particles&apos; average diameter, mass of particulates, sample and furnace temperatures, and sample weight loss. The data indicate that there are significant correlations between the percentage of chlorine or nitrogen contained in the original samples and the HC1 or HCN concentrations evolved during the combustion of the materials. These correlations may be used to predict and evaluate a material&apos;s toxic hazard during combustion.
