The Bureau of Mines, as part of an effort to maximize minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources, has investigated the feasibility of recovering heavy minerals as byproducts from sand and gravel, placer gold, and industrial mineral operations in northern California. Sand samples from about 50 locations were treated by gravity separation to yield heavy-mineral concentrates (black sands). Mineral compositions of the concentrates were determined by chemical analysis and mineralogical examination. Individual zircon, ilmenite, magnetite, platinum-group metals, thoria, and silica products were prepared from heavy-mineral concentrates by selective separation using low-and high-intensity magnetic, high-tension, and flotation equipment.

Concentrating, nodulizing, and smelting studies were conducted at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines to determine whether (1) western iron ores of the type found in the Carter Greek deposit near Dillon, Mont., could be utilized; (2) concentrates of acceptable grade with good iron recovery could be attained by wet-magnetic beneficiation; (3) nodulized concentrates could be smelted with reductants readily available in Montana; (4) iron concentrates could be smelted without prior agglomeration; and (5) high-purity iron could be produced directly from high-grade concentrates, Three small samples and two tonnage samples from the Carter Creek deposit were uniform in chemical composition, and their iron content averaged about 31 percent. They were found to be banded gneisses, and magnetite was the principal iron-bearing mineral.

"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. To assess the efficacy and economics of producing power from coal, four open-cycle magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processing schemes were selected for study. Each involved a different mode of coal combustion and level of gas cleanliness. The options considered were: (1) coal burned in a slagging combustor; (2) suspension gasification with slag removal prior to combustion; (3) parallel cyclone combustors, one operating fuel rich and the other operating with excess air; and (4) suspension gasification by the hot exhaust gases from the MHO duct with ash removed prior to combustion. Option 1 has the highest ash content in the combustion plasma and as a result would have the greatest operational difficulties associated with it. Options 2 and 4 have the cleanest MHD combustion plasma. For coal priced at $4/ton, the power generating cost of option 4,11.78 mills/Kw-hr, is the highest, with Option 1, at 9.04 mills/kW-hr the lowest. These costs may be compared with a conventional power cost of 9.92 mills/kW-hr for the late seventies. Capital costs of three of the four options were competitive with those of conventional thermal power plants employing stack gas S02 cleanup systems. Option 2 has the most favorable combination of operating characteristics and power cost. It was concluded that a clean, high-temperature working fluid can probably be produced from coal without leading to depressed system efficiencies and exorbitant capital costs.

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures, a comprehensive international database of 131 case histories has been compiled. The cases include six failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and seven even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. The case studies suggest two types of room failure mechanism. The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender or remnant longwall panel narrows. The second is an overburden weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rockwell above the immediate roof. The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields. The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used. Weighting failures were not greatly affected by the density of roof reinforcement. In one of the overburden weighting cases, in a Pittsburgh coal bed mine, stress cell, convergence, bolt load and extensometer data have been used to analyze the failure in detail. In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the Douglas Deposit in an attempt to find an additional source of supply of copper. The deposit, which was opened in 1878, was worked until 1883 and is reported to have produced between 2 and 3 million pounds of copper. Heap-roasting and smelting and later gravity concentration were employed in ore reduction. Old slag dumps and tailing piles from these operations still remain. In 1917, the American Smelting & Refining Co., purchased the mine, and in June 1918 production was started in a 125-ton mill, using both tables and flotation. The mill was closed December 31, 1918, and soon after the milling plant Was dismantled and removed. The mine has remained idle ever since. The deposit occurs in a mineralized zone that follows the schistosity. The principal metallic minerals are pyrite) chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite) arsenopyrite, sphalerite, magnetite) slight chalcocitel and cuprite. To search for additional ore shoots and to prove the known ore shoot at depth, the Bureau of Mines drilled seven holes, which totaled 2,117.4 feet. No additional ore was developed by this work.

Heats of formation were obtained for four anhydrous crystalline sodium borates by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry. The heats of formation at 298.15° K from the elements are NAB02, -233.2 ±0.6 kcal/mole; Na2B07, -786.4 ±1.0 kcal/mole; NaB305, -549.9 ±0.8 kcal/mole; and Na2B6013, -1,412.5 ±2.0 kcal/mole, The heats of formation from the constituent oxides are NaB02, -31.5 ±0.8 kcal/mole; Na2B407, -78.8 ±1.3 kcal/mole; NaB305, -44.1 ±0.8 kcal/mole; and Na2B8013, -96.7 ±1.5 kcal/mole.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a simple method of producing low-phosphorus hematite concentrates from certain submarginal southeastern iron ores. The investigation was undertaken to obtain additional information on the Clinton iron ore outcrops at the southwestern extremity of the Birmingham district of Alabama and to assist in the development of operating techniques that would make it profitable to use the marginal ores of this area for blast-furnace feed. Batch and continuous pilot-plant tests demonstrated that a relatively simple wet scrubbing treatment) followed by a desliming operation to reject argillaceous (clayey) gangue, consistently yielded a marketable granular hematite product. Iron losses were relatively high but could be tolerated in view of the low treatment cost.

Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the "gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ultimate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficacy of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity show a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate of gas injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of its studies of the explosibility of various coal dusts in the Experimental coal mine, the Bureau of Mines has tested coals representing the entire range of volatile content found in the United States. In connection with their work the Bureau's field engineers some¬times meet operating officials who are not impressed by the fact that there is an explosion hazard in mines working low—volatile coals. Actually the difference in explosion hazard between high—volatile and low—volatile coals is one of degree and not of kind. The purpose of this paper is to set forth briefly the experimental evidence that has been accumulated on the explosibility of coal dusts containing 8 to 31 percent volatile matter on a dry, mineral—matter—free basis.There have been numerous dust explosions in mines in which coals were worked that have compositions within this range. Those explosions are listed in an appendix, together with a bibliography of Bureau of Mines papers describing explosion tests in the Experimental coal mine."

Analytical results for nahcolite, dawsonite, total extractable alumina, and oil yield are presented for samples representing Green River Formation oil shales in the saline section of two cores from Colorado's Piceance Creek basin. Analyses are also reported for samples extending the analyzed section of Colorado corehole No. 3 beyond that reported previously. These data permit evaluation of the deposit for possible production of three coproducts--shale oil, alumina, and sodium carbonates--from the saline section of the formation at these sampled points.

In 1930 the Shenandoah-Dives Mining Co. near Silverton, Colo., put into operation a newly erected, 300-ton selective flotation plant to mill complex ores from its nearby mine. The operation was a steady producer and was enlarged to treat 600 to 800 tons a day. In 1942 the company opened and started milling an area in the mine containing semioxidized ore. The valuable mineral. Content of this ore was considerably higher than in the straight sulfide ore previously handled alone. The mixture of clean sulfide and semi-oxidized ore was difficult to treat; consequently tailing losses, especially with respect to lead, were high. A. few years later, in order to study the possibilities, of obtaining higher recoveries by a modification of the mill flow sheet, a 1,200-pound sample of mill feed, taken over a period of several days by the company, was submitted to the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station for testing. Although this sample proved to contain more than twice as much lead as the average yearly mill feed, the same problem of recovering the oxidized values were present.

The Bureau of Mines conducted phosphate beneficiation studies to determine the influence of mineralogical and textural features on the recovery of phosphate from select bed and composite samples representing different phosphate rock types of the western Phosphoria Formation. Batch heavy-liquid tests showed that ore grade) pellet size, and type of interstitial material were significant parameters affecting concentrate grade and recovery. Recoveries at acid grade (31.5 percent P2O5) ranged from 98 to 56 percent. Liberation was essentially complete at 28 mesh, and recoveries tended to drop when overgrinding occurred.

Pittsburgh bed and Lower Freeport bed coals were tested in the U.S. Bureau of Mines two-stage froth flotation pilot plant, which utilizes a new flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur. The process consists of a first-stage coal flotation step to remove coarse, free pyrite and other refuse in the tailings. The clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped and treated with a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother to selectively float the remaining pyrite in a second stage. Results in the pilot plant were excellent, comparing well with those obtained in laboratory batch tests. That is, about 70 percent of the pyrite present in the Pittsburgh bed coal and about 90 percent of the pyrite present in the Lower Freeport bed coal were removed with excellent final clean coal recoveries.

Heat capacities of ferrous molybdate (FeMoO4) and ferrous tungstate (FeWO4) were measured over the temperature range 51° to 298.15° K. Ferrous tungstate has a lambda type heat capacity anomaly at 74° K. The 298.15° K entropies are FeMoO4) 30.9 cal/deg mole and FeW04) 31.5 cal/deg mole.

In the course of experiments on the stabilization of acetylene gas by addition of other gases, notably hydrocarbons such as methane, propane, and butane, it was observed that large quantities of carbon black are produced during the explosion of acetylene or mixtures of acetylene with the, above hydrocarbons, the added hydrocarbon being essentially decomposed into hydrogen and carbon. It is known that in the complete absence of air acetylene explodes upon application of an intense ignition source at pressure above 5.9 p.s.i. gage. The same is true of mixtures of hydrocarbons and acetylene. However, the pressures necessary for explosion are considerably higher in the case of these mixtures and depend on the amount of added hydrocarbon. The present report contains data on gaseous products and the physical characteristics of the carbon black formed by explosion at elevated pressures of various mixtures of acetylene and hydrocarbons as well as other gases, such as hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.

Typically, the majority of such traffic consists of trucks hauling either mine product or waste [rum the surface mime pit and/or the processing plant. Fugitive dust generated along these unpaved mine roads includes particles of all sizes which become airborne. The potential hazards include the deleterious effects to human health of inhaled dust, traffic visibility hazards and environmental impacts on the localized area by the larger-sized visible airborne dust. Two held surveys were recently conducted to quantify fugitive dust generation and dispersion from truck traffic on unpaved and untreated mine haulage roads For these surveys., airborne glow sampling was conducted at multiple sampling fixations away from an unpaved haulage road at a limestone quarry/plant and at a coal mine preparation plant lo measure the size characteristics, concentrations. and dispersive behavior of the dust cloud generated from truck traffic- Results show that at least 80% of the airborne Just generated by haul trucks was larger than 10 µm- Airborne respirable, thoracic, and total dust concentrations all decreased and approached background concentrations 30.5 in (100 feet) from the road This report describes the average and instantaneous peak dust levels that were measured tip to 30.5m (100 feet) Iron the haulage road.
