Laboratory batch and pilot plant flotation tests were made to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial grade kyanite from a quartzite- kyanite rock from the Graves Mountain, Ga., deposit. Best results in laboratory and continuous tests were obtained using sodium carbonate for pH control, citric acid for quartz depression, and oleic acid as the kyanite collector. Over 80 percent of the kyanite was recovered in a concentrate analyzing 56.8 percent Al203 and 3.8 percent hydrochloric acid soluble Fe203. Subsequent treatment of the flotation concentrate by magnetic separation reduced the acid soluble Fe2O3 to 0.6 percent and increased the alumina content to 59.2 percent. Acid leaching of the concentrate gave a product analyzing 59.7 percent Al203 and about 0.1 percent Fe203. As a result of the beneficiation research, a commercial kyanite flotation plant was completed in September 1962 by private industry.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated temperature increases on the heads of resin-grouted bolts as indicators of the integrity of the anchoring of the bolt. Expected increases were calculated by the finite difference method; the calculations were checked by bolthead temperature measurements, both in the laboratory and in the field. The accuracy of the calculations varies with the validity of assumptions necessary to the process. Measurements in the laboratory produced a temperature rise of about 4.00 F on the head of a 4-foot bolt when installed with a full column of resin. This increase remained for about 30 minutes. Similar increases were noted on bolts installed at the White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., but bolthead temperature increases in the mine lasted only about 10 to 15 minutes. When partial columns (reduced amounts) were used, the temperature increases were smaller.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver, as well as of the manganese, contained in some domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method consists of an initial leach of manganese with aqueous sulfur dioxide (S02) followed first by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach with cyanide solution for the extraction of silver. Refractory silver in these ores was either (1) intimately associated with the manganese, (2) chemically resistant to cyanide leaching, or (3) rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct of the silver and 65 to 96 pet of the manganese were attained in laboratory column-leach tests using the dual leaching method on equivalent-sized ore pieces from seven domestic deposits.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following questions are frequently asked by coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any, of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when coal is stored? DISCUSSION (a) Loss of Heating Value Studies by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss of heating value of coal in storage commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh gas, and Sheridan (Wyo.) coals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a worldwide literature review of bleederless ventilation practices to evaluate their use as a spontaneous combustion control measure in U.S. coal mines. Factors that must be taken into account in the design and use of these systems include seal construction, the use of ventilation control devices, the use of methane-drainage systems in gassy mines, and the ground control plan. Monitoring for the detection of spontaneous combustion and the control of methane when methane-drainage techniques are employed is critical to the successful use of a bleederless ventilation system. This report describes the types of ventilation systems used throughout the world and the spontaneous combustion risks associated with these systems. Methane-drainage systems used in conjunction with bleederless ventilation systems are discussed. Ground control considerations such as pillar design, entry stability, and seal usage are reviewed. Monitoring systems for spontaneous combustion detection, methane-drainage control, and behind seals are examined. Finally, methods for evaluating the spontaneous combustion hazard of a mining operation to determine when the use of a bleederless ventilation system is warranted are reviewed.

Part Two of this report is based upon six working memoranda prepared during the first half of 1972 at an early stage in our work for the Bureau of Mines. This work presents preliminary performance estimates of baseband voice and narrowband through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau for operational/ emergency mine communications applications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; on theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau and on semi-empirical models which describe the intelligibility of voice communications as a function of the frequency variations of the signal-to-noise ratio across the voiceband. This work examines the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, and uplink transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/ meter (high) were used; the former figure for both voice and narrowband calculations and the latter for narrowband calculations only. Examples of high, moderate, and low, surface and subsurface, harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low-levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. The effects of simple voice spectrum shaping techniques on the intelligibility of through-the-earth voice communications are examined, and indexes of intelligibility more broadly based than signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Finally, a means of overcoming the affects of 60 Hz noise and its harmonics which are the largest contributors to typical audio frequency in-mine noise, is suggested. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

"A virtual impactor personal aerosol sampler (VIPAS) bas been developed for use in diesel-equipped mines to collect size-separated samples or diesel exhaust and mine dust particles in the respirable size range. This sampler consists or three stages: a 10-mm cyclone, a 0.8- µm cutpoint virtual impactor and two filter cassettes. The large non-respirable particles are removed in a 10-mm cyclone. The respirable particles from the cyclone pass through a 0.8- µm cutpoint virtual impactor with the particles larger than and smaller than 0.8 JI.ID (mine dust and diesel exhaust particles, respectively) collected on two 37-mm filter cassettes. The sampling How rate is 2 L/min so as to be compatible with the standard respirable dust sampler and personal sampling pumps. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry has been increasing its use of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines, especially in coal mines. With this increased usage has come an increased concern regarding the health effects associated with inhaling diesel exhaust particles since they are in the respirable particulate size range. A Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for diesel exhaust particles to assess worker exposure (MSHA, 1988). In addition, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen as defined in the Cancer Policy of Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988).Past work, with cascade impactors in both the laboratory and in underground coal mine studies, has shown that the diesel exhaust particles are primarily in the less than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter size range whereas the coal dust particles are primarily greater than 0.8 µm (Marple et al., 1986; Cantrell, 1987; Rubow and Marple, 1988; Rubow et al., 1990a, b; Cantrell and Rubow, 1991). This work has been jointly performed by the University of Minnesota and Bureau of Mines researchers over the last 8 years. Typical particle size distributions for a diesel-equipped coal mine and an all electric coal mine are shown in Figure l. Note that the particles in the < 0.8-µ.m mode are the diesel exhaust particles (seen only in diesel-powered mines) and the particles in the > 0.8-µ.m mode are coal particles (seen in both the electric-powered and diesel-powered coal mines). Chemical mass balance analysis was also performed on these two size fractions to determine the degree of particle cross-contamination in the two modes. This analysis showed less than 10% cross-contamination, i.e., in coal mines Jess than 10% of the diesel exhaust particulate was collected in the coarse fraction and Jess than 10% of the mine dust was collected in the fine fraction (Cantrell, 1987; Rubow et al., 1990a)."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the main reactions of coal gasification by steam. Coal (minus 70 mesh)-water slurry was fed into a laboratory-scale tube-coil gasifier to show the effects of residence time (0.6 to 1.1 sec), steam-coal ratio (2 to 11 lb/lb), and temperature (1,600° to 1,900° F), at about 1-1/2 atm. Devolatilization was very rapid: about 70 pet of the coal&apos;s volatile matter evolved within 0.6 sec at about 1,600° F; temperature increase released more volatile matter until about 95 pct was driven off at 1,900° F. Devolatilization was not increased by raising steam concentrations and was only slightly increased by extending residence time. Below 1,600° F, there was no evidence of the steam-carbon reaction, but at 1,900° F more than 80 pct of the coal&apos;s fixed carbon was converted to gas; the conversion was increased Significantly by increased residence time and steam concentration. The water-gas shift reaction occurred simultaneously with devolatilization, and the steam-carbon reaction, approaching equilibrium with increased residence time and temperature and decreased steam concentration.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Midvale concentrator, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Midvale concentrator, a custom lead-zinc selective flotation plant, is in Salt Lake County, Utah, on a flat site several hundred yards east of the Jordan River and about 200 yards south of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks leading to Bingham Canyon. The site is at an elevation of about 50 feet above the river, the highest available location, thus allowing maximum storage of tailings.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses the status of a laser-based guidance system to provide position and heading feedback and closed-loop control of tramming maneuvers for a continuous mining machine. The system has been developed and tested at the Bureau, and is now being prepared for underground experiments. The system hardware includes laser scanners, a sensor communication network, and host computer hardware. The system software includes a position and heading computation module and a tram control module. The description of the software includes discussions of laser data acquisition, error compensation methods, position and heading determination, safety checking for continuous miner tramming, and closed-loop tram control. The accuracy of the laser scanner&apos;s data, the reliability of the lasers in a dusty environment, and the system&apos;s accuracy on tracking the position and heading of the continuous mining machine are shown in the results of experiments performed at the Bureau. Conclusions are stated based on these experimental results, and further work to improve the system performance and prepare for underground testing is discussed.

Two self-contained breathing apparatus of the closed-circuit compressed-oxygen type were evaluated for performance at 32° to -25° F. Low-temperature effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration, visual properties of the facepiece, and mechanical operation of the apparatus were studied. Although operation varied with the wearer, his breathing rate, the apparatus precooling time, and the temperature, results suggest that general use of currently approved compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus be limited to temperatures above 32° F.

The alveolar macrophage (AM) responds to stimuli such as coal mine dust by releasing inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, growth factors. reactive oxygen species. and eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are synthesized by°AM through the action of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes and serve to modulate the proinflammatory function of this cell as part of the lungs' host defense mechanism. Reactive oxygen species can be generated by AM as a by-product in the biosynthetic pathway of the prostaglandins. AM produces primarily prostaglandin E2, thromboxane A2, and leukotriene B4 as part of the cellular response to an inflammatory stimulus. There is evidence to suggest that eicosanoid production by AM is functionally linked to both surface interaction with mine dust particles like silica and by the phagocytosis of the dust particle itself. In this report, we examined the effects of an antioxidant, vitamin E. on dust-induced synthesis of PGE2 and TXB2 in vitro and in vivo by AM obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage from rats. We also looked at the effects of the surface of silica particles on AM eicosanoid biosynthesis under conditions of calcination, a process that removes exposed hydroxyl groups from the surface of silica particles, thus reducing the likelihood of soluble hydroxyl radical formation. Treatment of AM with vitamin E in vivo and in vitro reduced the augmentation in eicosanoid production usually observed when AM are exposed to mine dusts. These results suggest that vitamin E may effectively reduce the inflammatory and fibrotic response produced by inhalation of mineral dust through an antioxidant mechanism. Silica that has been chemically altered by calcination was unable to activate AM eicosanoid production in vitro when compared to untreated, freshly fractured silica. These findings suggest that the mechanism by which dust particles can activate AM eicosanoid release may involve interaction of surface and/or soluble factors with the cell membrane. Taken together, these studies point to the involvement of AM eicosanoid production as part of the proinflammatory response of this cell to occupational inhalation of mineral dust. - Environ Health Perspect 102(Suppl 10):97-100 (1994)

To determine the retorting characteristics of a column of mine-run, ungraded oil shale ranging in size from fines to pieces weighing as much as 5 tons, a 150-ton batch retort was designed and constructed at the Laramie Energy Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The retort vessel is 45 feet high by 11-1/2 feel in inside diameter and is supported in a 92-Foot-high steel superstructure. Mine-run shale from the Bureau of Mines facility near Rifle, Colo., assaying about 25 gallons of oil per ton, is currently being used as the test shale. To date, three runs have been completed. Results of the second and third runs are reported in this paper. The two runs considered in this report are the first of a series of nine to determine operating conditions that will yield maximum oil recovery from a column of mine-run shale. Variables studied :ire the oxygen content of the retorting gas and the space velocity of the retorting gas expressed as ft3 gas/ft3 bed/min. Oil recoveries for the two runs reported are 62.2 volume percent of Fischer assay for the run using higher oxygen and space velocity, compared with 39.3 volume-percent when less oxygen and a Lower space velocity were used.

Corundum is a natural alumina (A120 ) and is next to the diamond in hardness . Except for the gem varieties , it is used principally as an abrasive , chiefly in grinding , dressing , and polishing metals and optical glass . Natural corundum is preferred to artificial abrasives for certain specialized jobs . Most of the corundum ( excluding emery ) mined in the United States came from the Corundum Hill mine in North Carolina and the Laurel Creek mine in Georgia . The Corundum Hill mine provided over half of the domestic production of corundum prior to 1900. Since 1900 , the importation of foreign corundum and the manufacture of artificial abrasives caused the decline of corundum mining in the United States .

A series of alkyl-dithiocarbamic acid amine salts was prepared and tested as collector for slimed lead minerals contained in the waste material from a commercial lead ore concentrator. The reagents, members of a homologous series differing only in the number of alkyl radicals in their structure, were prepared by reacting stoichiometric amounts of primary amines and carbon disulfide in a cold alcohol solution. Subsequent purification was by recrystallization from absolute ethyl alcohol solution. Evaluation was through froth flotation of a mill tailing containing 0.2 percent lead. Results show that maximum recovery (38 percent) was obtained with the reagent containing 8 alkyl radicals, but that maximum rougher concentrate grade (4.8 percent) was obtained with the reagents of intermediate number of radicals.

The goal of this research was to adapt the highly successful rock borehole shear test for use in deep, small-diameter boreholes. Operating somewhat on the principle of a rock bolt, the borehole shear test measures both the expansion pressure and pulling force to give discrete measures of rock shearing strength as a function of the applied normal pressure. A new instrument was designed and built to fit into a 2-3/8 inch diameter hole. Unfortunately the design became so complicated, the operation is nut reliable. This is attributed to constraints of the small hole, and added requirements of an in-hole anchor to push against, and a rotating shear plate cleaner for repeated tests down-hole. A clue to the d: vice complexity is its length, which is over 10 feet. Furthermore it employs concentric cylinders and one hydraulic cylinder bored into the piston of another, or it would be even longer. Meanwhile drilling technology has advanced to greatly reduce costs of drilling 5- or 6-inch diameter holes. The downhole tester therefore should be redesigned and simplified for use in a larger diameter drill hole.

A procedure is described for recovering both lead and sulfur from galena flotation concentrate, comprising the following steps: (1) Aqueous oxidation of the concentrate, using ferric sulfate to convert lead sulfide to sulfate and to give elemental sulfur; (2) regeneration of the ferric sulfate by electrolysis in a diaphragm cell; (3) treatment of the leach residue with ammonium carbonate solution to change the lead to an acid-soluble form and to produce ammonium sulfate as a byproduct; (4) solution of the lead carbonate in hydro-fluosilicic acid followed by electrolysis to recover the lead as metal and regenerate the acid; and (5) extraction of the elemental sulfur from the final residue with an organic solvent. About 90 percent of the lead can be recovered by the above method as 99.9-percent-pure metal, together with two-thirds of the sulfur--half in the elemental form and half as ammonium sulfate.

The Bumpus Cove area is in Unicoi County, Tenn., about 9 miles south of Jonesboro and 5 miles northwest of Erwin. Iron and lead ores were mined in the Bumpus Cove area before the American Revolution. The production of those metals continued intermittently until 1916. In 1850 this area was the most important producer of iron in the South. In 1911 several carloads of zinc ore was recovered from old dumps and shipped to Missouri smelters. In 1913 systematic mining of zinc ores was begun and continued until 1916. After that year, mining again became sporadic and continued so until discontinued in 1943.
