"Diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and as found in five underground coal mines- 3 utiliting diesel-powered hallage equipment and two electric-powered equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations. The first technique, using a microbrifke uniform deposit impactor CMOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of .the aerosol is predom1nately submicrometer and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance CCMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results. ,The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral ·dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 um. For the diesel equipped mines, this analysts yielded an average value for the fraction of the fine aerosol attributable to mineral dust of 1 pct. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling."

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coal beds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.

A process was developed on a laboratory scale in which a solid waste byproduct from refining of secondary lead was converted into three valuable products. Roasted lead blast furnace matte was leached with water to recover copper. This was followed by brine leaching to recover lead. Residues were finally smelted to yield pig iron. Copper was precipitated as cement copper and the lead product obtained was a mixture of pure 3PbO.PbC12.xH20 and Pb(OH)C1. Copper recovery was 89 percent and lead recovery was 96 percent.

This report gives general expressions for evaluating various thermo-dynamic properties applicable to a two-component system, including liquid-vapor equilibria. In addition, expressions are developed for some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data. These formulas were developed from the general principles of thermodynamics and are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, which is assumed to be an explicit function of the molal density, the absolute thermodynamic temperature, and the composition.

An analytical procedure developed by the Bureau of Mines was applied to the separation and characterization of a 370° to 535° C distillate from Swan Hills (south field), Alberta, Canada, crude oil. Investigators determined the general characteristics of the crude oil by the Bureau's routine method for crude oil analysis. Suitable fractions were prepared for instrumental analyses by utilizing such techniques as isothermal and molecular distillations, chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel chromatography, and gel permeation chromatography (GK). A detailed characterization of the 370° to 535° C distillate was possible by the application of GPC-mass spectrometry correlations and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Semiquantitative data based on mass Z series distributions were determined and are shown. The data will be valuable in developing future processing techniques and in calculating yields for converting high-boiling distillates into more useful energy forms.

This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.

This publication comprises tables listing friction loss for a flexible, spiral-reinforced circular ventilation tubing system. The tables were constructed with the following parameters: a friction factor of 62 X 10-10, 10-foot sections of tubing ranging in total length from 100 to 550 feet, air quantities ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 cfm, and one to four 90° bends in the tubing. The aim of this publication is to improve ventilation tubing analysis and to provide a method of proper fan selection.

Recently 30 men wore viewing the demonstration of a now portable electric arc-welding outfit. A few hours later 17 of the 30 men reported to the doctor for treatment. They were suffering from traumatic conjunctivitis. In two cases the gain was very severe and the symptoms were similar to those of iritis. orphine had to be administered to afford relief from pain. Only two men of the 30 wera not affected in some way from this exposure. These two men were thick-lensed orange-colored glasses. Several of the men wore orange-colored glasses with thin lenses, but the latter were not heavy enough to afford protection.against an exposure as long as took place. The distance of the eye from the are also in- fluences the possibility of injury. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the con- junctiva; the conjunctiva is the mucous membrane covering the inside of the eye- lids and part of the eyeball. Traumatic conjunctivitis is caused by foreign bodies in the eye, exposure of the eyes to high winds, dust, smoke, intense light from electric arc lamps, and from electric welding apparatus. In the instance mentioned above, the inflammation was due to the ultra-violet rays. The ultra-violet rays lie beyond the violet rays in the spectrum and are invisible to the eye. In some cases the effect is so severe that, in addition to conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the skin similar to sunburn is produced. The symptons of conjunctivitis caused by intense light or by the ultra- violet rays are marked photophobia (abnormal intolerance to light), excessive secretion of tears, intense starting of the lid, contraction of the pupil, some- times swelling of the lid, and small ulcers developing on the eyeball or cornea. Unless properly treated by a physician immediately, chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, or retina, and possibly blindness, may result. Under proper treatment most cases get wall in a few days. All treatments should be under the direction of a physician. That usually advised is to place ice packs on the patient's eyes three or four times daily. The pack should be left on from 15 minutes to an hour. The eyes should be irrigated with normal salt solution (a teaspoonful to a quart of sterile vater) or a saturated solution of boric acid several times daily. If there is a discharge of pus, a few drops of a 25 per cent solution of argyrol or a 5 per cent solution of protargol should bo placed in the eyes three to six times daily. The patient should be confined to a darkened room until his condition improves in order to avoid complications. These treatments will reduce the swelling, give the patient confort, and prevent the development of chronic conjunctivitis. In severe cases it may be necessary to administer morphine to relieve the pain.

Increase the safety of operators of front-end loaders by providing a means of monitoring the machine's stability. Approach Through a research contract, the Bureau of Mines developed a front-end loader stability indicator which provides the machine operator with a reliable, easily interpreted display assessing the stability of the machine. How It Works Statistics show that front-end loader accidents are the largest single category of machinery-related accidents in the surface mining industry. Many of the fatalities resulting from these accidents occur when front-end loaders rollover and either crush the operator who is trapped within the cab or strike the operator who is trying to jump to safety. Although rollover protective structures (ROPS) are required by law on front-end loaders to protect operators in the case of a rollover, these do not prevent the actual rollover from occurring. In fact, the operator has no way of evaluating the stability of the machine except by using personal judgment. The Bureau of Mines responded to this problem by developing a front-end loader stability indicator whose primary function is to Indicate to the operator when the machine is approaching an unstable situation which may trigger a rollover. The device bases Its interpretation on measurement of the normal loads on the machine's wheels. Strain gage instrumentation located on the machine is used to monitor the magnitude and change of forces acting normal to the front-end loader's wheels. These forces are direct indicators of the machine's center of gravity relative to its position on the ground. The strain gages are connected to electronic circuitry which amplifies and processes the signals. Stability or instability of the loader is relayed to the operator through a display of green, amber and red lights.

8. Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. SMCRA contains five principal regulatory provisions that form the basis for its implementation: Performance Standards Performance standard safe intended to ensure that all surface mining is conducted in a way that protects the environment and the public and ensures that the mined land is restored to productive use following mining. Permits Before developing a surface or underground coal mine, an operator must have a permit issued under SMCRA. An application for a permit to conduct a surface coal mining operation is a detailed document that consists of text and numeric data describing the proposed mining and reclamation. Information must be furnished on pre-mining environmental conditions, existing land use, proposed mining and reclamation, how the performance standards will be met, and the post-mining land use. This provides the regulatory authority with the information necessary to determine that the operation can be conducted in accordance with the regulations. Performance Bonds Before a permit can be granted, an operator must post a performance bond sufficient to cover the cost of reclaiming the site in the event the operator fails to complete reclamation. The bond is not fully released until all performance standards have been met and reclamation of the site has been determined to be successful after five years in the East and Midwest, and after 10 years in the arid West. However, the bond can be partially released as various phases of reclamation are completed. Inspection and Enforcement If a violation of SMCRA or of a state surface mining and reclamation law is observed, an inspector issues a notice of violation to the operator. The violation must be corrected within a specific time, and the operator may also have to pay a fine based on the severity of the violation. If the violation is not corrected, acessation order is issued to immediately stop active coal mining, and the operator must pay a fine. If a violation is especially serious (for example, creates an Following reclamation, the land was immediately put back into agricultural production. Today, grain and corn crop yields have continually exceeded targets. 2 imminent danger to public health or safety or causes significant damage to land, air, or water resources) the inspector immediately issues a cessation order. An operator must correct all violations in order to obtain permits for new mines. Lands Unsuitable For Mining Congress recognized that certain coal deposits cannot be mined without permanent damage to unique cultural or natural resources. As a result, SMCRA protects these resources in two ways: It prohibits mining within the boundaries of national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, trails, wild and scenic rivers, wilderness and recreation areas; in areas which will adversely affect sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and within a restricted distance of occupied dwellings, public roads, buildings, parks, schools, churches, and cemeteries; and Provides a process that allows anyone whose interests may be adversely affected by proposed mining to petition to have specific lands designated unsuitable for mining.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

Several solid sorbents were compared for their effectiveness in removing sulfur dioxide from flue gases. The materials were tested for the rate of sorption and capacity at about 300° C, and rate of regeneration around 700° C in thin beds and in 4-inch-diameter fluidized beds. Rates of material loss were also estimated. The sorbents tested included three samples of alkalized alumina, two samples of sodium carbonate-impregnated alumina, and one proprietary sample of porous silica impregnated with copper and iron compounds. The results showed that all the alkalized aluminas had good sorption capacities and rates, required high temperature regeneration, and suffered excessive material loss; the sodium carbonate-impregnated aluminas (1) had high sorption rates but barely adequate capacities, (2) required high temperature regeneration, and (3) suffered excessive material losses; and the copper-iron impregnated silica suffered only slight material loss and could be regenerated at a relatively low temperature, but the sorption rate and capacity were too small. None of the sorbents met all the arbitrary performance criteria that follow: sorption rate constant of 1 min-1, sorption capacity of 0.1 g sulfur per g sorbent, regeneration rate constant of about 0.075 min-1 at a reasonable temperature, less than 0.07 pct per hour material loss during operation, and a chemical life of 500 cycles.

As part of its program to help decrease the dependency of the United States on foreign imports of nonfuel minerals and to devise technology for the efficient and economic use of domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines smelted and sulfation-leached an ilmenite from northern Minnesota. The objective was to assess the feasibility of preparing chlorination-grade titanium feedstock. The concentrate was smelted with woodchips, coke, and soda ash in 91-kg-and 1-metric ton (mt)-capacity electric arc furnaces to form Ti-rich slag and commercial-grade pig iron. The slag contained from 67 to 77 wt pct titanium oxides and from 1.8 to 7.2 wt pct iron. Sulfation occurred in a 4.5-kg/h moving-bed reactor using S02-air mixtures at temperatures of 8000 to 8500 C to form soluble salts of the Ca, Mg, Mn,and Na impurities, which cause plugging of fluidized-bed chlorinators. Subsequently, the sulfated slag was leached in acid to remove the soluble sulfates. The final product from small-scale testing contained up to 95.5 wt pct Ti02, a minimum of 0.6 wt pct Fe, and a minimum total of 0.3 wt pct of the four impurities of interest. The final product meets charge specifications for chlorination. However, more large-scale testing is necessary.

The Bell mine operated by the Warner Co. at Bellefonte, Pa., has an annual production of about 600,000 short tons of high-grade limestone. Since 1924, shrinkage stoping has been the mining method. Horizontal, long-hole diamond-drilling for production in stopes was started with one machine in July 1946. It is now standard practice. The burden on the holes is 10 feet. Diamond bits are noncoring EX-size in both concave and pilot types. The two types have little difference in drilling speed at the Bell mine. The diamond drills are mounted on 3-inch single-screw columns. Diamond drilling shows a marked increase in efficiency at the Bell mine, compared to percussion drilling, with respect to tons broken per drill shift, tons broken per foot of hole, and tons broken per pound of explosive. The advantages of diamond-drilling blast-holes also include (a) improved safety, greater footage per drill shift, (c) better frag- mentation of the broken, stone, and (d) reduction in amount of barring down required in stopes because the working places are limited to slots which have a relatively small area.

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. Trachea removed from pathogen-free rats were maintained as organ cultures and used to study the effects of coal dust exposure on the synthesis of mucin. The high molecular weight isotopically labeled (3H-glucosamine, 14Cleucine or 35S-sulfate) mucin could be purified by gel filtration, treatment with testicular hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography, delipidation and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. To examine effect of coal dust on mucin production, groups of explant cultures were exposed to media containing coal dust at 100 µg per ml every 2 days for 2 weeks while control cultures were treated with media without dust. Analysis of the spent culture media showed that treatment with dust markedly decreased the production of nondialysable glycoproteins as well as hyaluronidase-resistant acid-precipitable fraction consisting mainly of mucin. Since the synthesis of protein was not affected to the same extent the decrease in mucin production is not entirely due to cell death. In separate experiments rats were subjected to in vivo coal dust exposure in inhalation chambers and tracheae of these and control rats were removed for explant cultures. The incorporation of precursor isotopes into mucin by these explant cultures are being examined. "The Keely mine at Dagger, Indiana, is one of the few mines that is being operated successfully on a cooperative basis. This shaft mine is developing 133 acres of coal in the Indiana No. 6 bed, which here averages 5-1/2 feet thick and. lies about 110 feet below the surface. Thirty seven (37) miners and twenty (20) company men or day man are employed, and the daily output is around 300 tons. Practically the entire production is sold by contract for railroad use. No mining machines are used and all coal is produced by pick work.The mine was originally owned and operated by the Stockton Coal. Co. of Dugger, but about eight years ago it was leased to Mr. Roy Price. He sub-leased the property to ten miners, who formed an association known as the Dugger Mutual Coal and Mining Co., to work the mine cooperatively.At first many difficulties were encountered; the cooperative idea is an old one, but the practice was new to those interested. Some of the men were energetic, ambitious workers; others were inclined to let their associates produce the coal but wanted to share in the profits. In time, after a hard struggle and many changes in the personnel of the company, business-like methods were adopted and the mine was put on a paying basis."

"INTRODUCTION This report is another of the series on the effect of drouth and low water on the pollution of streams by coalmine drainage. A previous report3 dealt with work on Bennett Branch of Sinnanahoning Creek, Pa. This report deals with the results obtained during a similar study of Black Lick Creek, Two Lick Creek, and Yellow Creek. All of these belong to the same drainage system. Two Lick Creek is a tributary to Black Lick Creek, and in turn Yellow Creek is a tributary to Two Lick Creek, as shown in Figure 1.Black Lick Creek was of such a volume that a seasonal investigation was not entirely feasible. Yellow Creek was found to have mines only near the mouth, except a few of status unknown to the writer at the extreme head-waters, and the stream was also more or less inaccessible for regular and frequent sampling. In an effort to improve the performance of the explosive-anchored rock bolt, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of the detonation velocity of the explosive and type of charge (linear or nonlinear) on the fracturing tendency of the anchor tube. Also, different types of tubing were compared to determine the one most suitable for use as an anchor tube. The Bruceton up-and-down method was applied in tests in which steel shooting blocks having boreholes ranging from 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inches in diameter were used. Of the four types of tubing evaluated, a welded A-178 tubing that was drawn over a mandrel and renormalized gave the most promising results. The A-179 seamless tubing that is normally used with the explosive bolt was the most inferior. Both types, however, gave significantly better anchorage than the conventional shell when tested in both laboratory and underground experiments. Within the range of velocities studied (5,000 to 7,000 m/sec), the type of explosive showed no significant effect on anchor-tube performance. In general; linear explosive charges provided better anchorage than nonlinear charges.

The bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory scale investigation of the process of selective flocculation with the objective of developing a method to effect separations on suspensions consisting predominately of ultra-fine-size (minus 400-mesh) particles of coal and refuse. Selective flocculation of coal from coal-refuse slurries could be achieved with a wide variety of reagents. Typically as much as 15 to 20 weight-percent of high-ash solids (70 to 80 percent ash) could be retained in suspension. The flocculated sediment remained a high-ash product, however, and would require further treatment to be regarded as clean coal. No combination of reagents and conditions led to selective flocculation of the refuse component. The dispersing agent was found to be the critical factor; dosages of 3 to 8 lb/ton2 were necessary to stabilize the suspension for subsequent selective flocculation. In addition, most of the dispersants that worked were most effective at substantially elevated pH (11 or so). It was concluded that this process would be prohibitively expensive and, because of yield and quality constraints, it would be of questionable utility in today's coal preparation industry.
